Complete Riemannian 4-manifolds with uniformly positive scalar curvature

We obtain topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian metric with uniformly positive scalar curvature on certain (non-compact) $4$-manifolds. In particular, such a metric on the interior of a compact contractible $4$-manifold uniquely distinguishes the standard $4$-ball up to diffeomorphism among Mazur manifolds and up to homeomorphism in general. We additionally show there exist uncountably many exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s that do not admit such a metric and that any (non-compact) tame $4$-manifold has a smooth structure that does not admit such a metric.

Improved generic regularity of codimension-1 minimizing integral currents

Let $Γ$ be a smooth, closed, oriented, $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We show that there exist arbitrarily small perturbations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ with the property that minimizing integral $n$-currents with boundary $Γ'$ are smooth away from a set of Hausdorff dimension $\leq n-9-\varepsilon_n$, where $\varepsilon_n \in (0, 1]$ is a dimensional constant. This improves on our previous result (where we proved generic smoothness of minimizers in $9$ and $10$ ambient dimensions). The key ingredients developed here are a new method to estimate the full singular set of the foliation by minimizers and a proof of superlinear decay of closeness (near singular points) that holds even across non-conical scales.

Mean curvature flow with generic initial data

We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

Complete stable minimal hypersurfaces in positively curved 4-manifolds

We show that the combination of non-negative sectional curvature (or $2$-intermediate Ricci curvature) and strict positivity of scalar curvature forces rigidity of complete (non-compact) two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a $4$-manifold with bounded curvature. In particular, this implies the nonexistence of complete two-sided stable minimal hypersurface in a closed $4$-manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our work leads to new comparison results. We also construct various examples showing rigidity of stable minimal hypersurfaces can fail under other curvature conditions.

Generalized soap bubbles and the topology of manifolds with positive scalar curvature

We prove that for $n\in \{4,5\}$, a closed aspherical $n$-manifold does not admit a Riemannian metric with positive scalar curvature. Additionally, we show that for $n\leq 7$, the connected sum of a $n$-torus with an arbitrary manifold does not admit a complete metric of positive scalar curvature. When combined with forthcoming contributions by Lesourd--Unger--Yau, this proves that the Schoen--Yau Liouville theorem holds for all locally conformally flat manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature. A key tool in these results are generalized soap bubbles -- surfaces that are stationary for prescribed-mean-curvature functionals (also called $μ$-bubbles).

Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data

We prove that sufficiently low-entropy closed hypersurfaces can be perturbed so that their mean curvature flow encounters only spherical and cylindrical singularities. Our theorem applies to all closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with entropy $\leq 2$ and to all closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. When combined with recent work of Daniels-Holgate, this strengthens Bernstein-Wang's low-entropy Schoenflies-type theorem by relaxing the entropy bound to $λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. Our techniques, based on a novel density drop argument, also lead to a new proof of generic regularity result for area-minimizing hypersurfaces in eight dimensions (due to Hardt-Simon and Smale).

The p-widths of a surface

The $p$-widths of a closed Riemannian manifold are a nonlinear analogue of the spectrum of its Laplace--Beltrami operator, which corresponds to areas of a certain min-max sequence of possibly singular minimal submanifolds. We show that the $p$-widths of any closed Riemannian two-manifold correspond to a union of closed immersed geodesics, rather than simply geodesic nets. We then prove optimality of the sweepouts of the round two-sphere constructed from the zero set of homogeneous polynomials, showing that the $p$-widths of the round sphere are attained by $\lfloor \sqrt{p}\rfloor$ great circles. As a result, we find the universal constant in the Liokumovich--Marques--Neves--Weyl law for surfaces to be $\sqrtπ$. En route to calculating the $p$-widths of the round two-sphere, we prove two additional new results: a bumpy metrics theorem for stationary geodesic nets with fixed edge lengths, and that, generically, stationary geodesic nets with bounded mass and bounded singular set have Lusternik--Schnirelmann category zero.

Mean curvature flow with generic initial data II

We show that the mean curvature flow of a generic closed surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ avoids multiplicity one tangent flows that are not round spheres/cylinders. In particular, we show that any non-cylindrical self-shrinker with a cylindrical end cannot arise generically.

Stable anisotropic minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbf{R}^{4}$

We show that a complete, two-sided, stable immersed anisotropic minimal hypersurface in $\mathbf{R}^4$ has intrinsic cubic volume growth, provided the parametric elliptic integral is $C^2$-close to the area functional. We also obtain an interior volume upper bound for stable anisotropic minimal hypersurfaces in the unit ball. We can estimate the constants explicitly in all of our results. In particular, this paper gives an alternative proof of our recent stable Bernstein theorem for minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbf{R}^4$. The new proof is more closely related to techniques from the study of strictly positive scalar curvature.

Volume growth of 3-manifolds with scalar curvature lower bounds

We give a new proof of a recent result of Munteanu--Wang relating scalar curvature to volume growth on a $3$-manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. Our proof relies on the theory of $μ$-bubbles introduced by Gromov as well as the almost splitting theorem due to Cheeger--Colding.

Singular behavior and generic regularity of min-max minimal hypersurfaces

We show that for a generic $8$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature, there exists a smooth minimal hypersurface. Without the curvature condition, we show that for a dense set of 8-dimensional Riemannian metrics there exists a minimal hypersurface with at most one singular point. This extends previous work on generic regularity that only dealt with area-minimizing hypersurfaces. These results are a consequence of a more general estimate for a one-parameter min-max minimal hypersurface $Σ\subset (M,g)$ (valid in any dimension): $$\mathcal H^{0} (\mathcal{S}_{nm}(Σ)) +{\rm Index}(Σ) \leq 1$$ where $\mathcal{S}_{nm}(Σ)$ denotes the set of singular points of $Σ$ with a unique tangent cone non-area minimizing on either side.

Classifying sufficiently connected PSC manifolds in $4$ and $5$ dimensions

We show that if $N$ is a closed manifold of dimension $n=4$ (resp. $n=5$) with $π_2(N) = 0$ (resp. $π_2(N)=π_3(N)=0$) that admits a metric of positive scalar curvature, then a finite cover $\hat N$ of $N$ is homotopy equivalent to $S^n$ or connected sums of $S^{n-1}\times S^1$. Our approach combines recent advances in the study of positive scalar curvature with a novel argument of Alpert--Balitskiy--Guth. Additionally, we prove a more general mapping version of this result. In particular, this implies that if $N$ is a closed manifold of dimensions $4$ or $5$, and $N$ admits a map of nonzero degree to a closed aspherical manifold, then $N$ does not admit any Riemannian metric with positive scalar curvature.

On the topology and index of minimal surfaces II

For an immersed minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$, we show that there exists a lower bound on its Morse index that depends on the genus and number of ends, counting multiplicity. This improves, in several ways, an estimate we previously obtained bounding the genus and number of ends by the index. Our new estimate resolves several conjectures made by J. Choe and D. Hoffman concerning the classification of low-index minimal surfaces: we show that there are no complete two-sided immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of index two, complete embedded minimal surface with index three, or complete one-sided minimal immersion with index one.

Uniqueness of asymptotically conical tangent flows

Singularities of the mean curvature flow of an embedded surface in R^3 are expected to be modelled on self-shrinkers that are compact, cylindrical, or asymptotically conical. In order to understand the flow before and after the singular time, it is crucial to know the uniqueness of tangent flows at the singularity. In all dimensions, assuming the singularity is multiplicity one, uniqueness in the compact case has been established by the second-named author, and in the cylindrical case by Colding-Minicozzi. We show here the uniqueness of multiplicity-one asymptotically conical tangent flows for mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces. In particular, this implies that when a mean curvature flow has a multiplicity-one conical singularity model, the evolving surface at the singular time has an (isolated) regular conical singularity at the singular point. This should lead to a complete understanding of how to "flow through" such a singularity.

Minimal surfaces and the Allen-Cahn equation on 3-manifolds: index, multiplicity, and curvature estimates

The Allen-Cahn equation is a semilinear PDE which is deeply linked to the theory of minimal hypersurfaces via a singular limit. We prove curvature estimates and strong sheet separation estimates for stable solutions (building on recent work of Wang-Wei) of the Allen-Cahn equation on a 3-manifold. Using these, we are able to show for generic metrics on a 3-manifold, minimal surfaces arising from Allen-Cahn solutions with bounded energy and bounded Morse index are two-sided and occur with multiplicity one and the expected Morse index. This confirms, in the Allen-Cahn setting, a strong form of the multiplicity one conjecture and the index lower bound conjecture of Marques-Neves in 3-dimensions regarding min-max constructions of minimal surfaces. Allen-Cahn min-max constructions were recently carried out by Guaraco and Gaspar-Guaraco. Our resolution of the multiplicity one and the index lower bound conjectures shows that these constructions can be applied to give a new proof of Yau's conjecture on infinitely many minimal surfaces in a 3-manifold with a generic metric (recently proven by Irie-Marques-Neves) with new geometric conclusions. Namely, we prove that a 3-manifold with a generic metric contains, for every $p$ = 1, 2, 3, ..., a two-sided embedded minimal surface with Morse index $p$ and area $p^{1/3}$, as conjectured by Marques-Neves.

The Riemannian Quantitative Isoperimetric Inequality

We study the Riemannian quantiative isoperimetric inequality. We show that direct analogue of the Euclidean quantitative isoperimetric inequality is--in general--false on a closed Riemannian manifold. In spite of this, we show that the inequality is true generically. Moreover, we show that a modified (but sharp) version of the quantitative isoperimetric inequality holds for a real analytic metric, using the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality. A main novelty of our work is that in all our results we do not require any a priori knowledge on the structure/shape of the minimizers.
