Curvature estimates and sheeting theorems for weakly stable CMC hypersurfaces

Weakly stable constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces are stable critical points of the area functional with respect to volume preserving deformations. We establish a pointwise curvature estimate (in the non-singular dimensions) and a sheeting theorem (in all dimensions) for weakly stable CMC hypersurfaces, giving an effective version of the compactness theorem for weakly stable CMC hypersurfaces established in the recent work of the first and third-named authors. Our results generalize the curvature estimate and the sheeting theorem proven respectively by Schoen--Simon--Yau and Schoen--Simon for strongly stable hypersurfaces.

A splitting theorem for scalar curvature

We show that a Riemannian $3$-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature is flat if it contains an area-minimizing cylinder. This scalar-curvature analogue of the classical splitting theorem of J.~Cheeger and D.~Gromollhas been conjectured by D.~Fischer-Colbrie and R.~Schoen and by M.~Cai and G.~Galloway.

Characterization of large isoperimetric regions in asymptotically hyperbolic initial data

Let $(M,g)$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold asymptotic to Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter and with scalar curvature $R \geq - 6$. Building on work of A.~Neves and G.~Tian and of the first-named author, we show that the leaves of the canonical foliation of $(M, g)$ are the unique solutions of the isoperimetric problem for their area. The assumption $R \geq -6$ is necessary. This is the first characterization result for large isoperimetric regions in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting that does not assume exact rotational symmetry at infinity.

Minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index

We prove a structural theorem that provides a precise local picture of how a sequence of closed embedded minimal hypersurfaces with uniformly bounded index (and volume if the ambient dimension is greater than three) in a Riemannian manifold of dimension at most seven, can degenerate. Loosely speaking, our results show that embedded minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index behave qualitatively like embedded stable minimal hypersurfaces, up to controlled errors. Several compactness/finiteness theorems follows our local picture.

Time-Periodic Einstein--Klein--Gordon Bifurcations of Kerr

We construct one-parameter families of solutions to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations bifurcating off the Kerr solution such that the underlying family of spacetimes are each an asymptotically flat, stationary, axisymmetric, black hole spacetime, and such that the corresponding scalar fields are non-zero and time-periodic. An immediate corollary is that for these Klein--Gordon masses, the Kerr family is not asymptotically stable as a solution to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations.

On far-outlying CMC spheres in asymptotically flat Riemannian $3$-manifolds

We extend the Lyapunov-Schmidt analysis of outlying stable CMC spheres in the work of S. Brendle and the second-named author to the "far-off-center" regime and to include general Schwarzschild asymptotics. We obtain sharp existence and non-existence results for large stable CMC spheres that depend very delicately on the behavior of scalar curvature at infinity.

Effective versions of the positive mass theorem

The study of stable minimal surfaces in Riemannian $3$-manifolds $(M, g)$ with non-negative scalar curvature has a rich history. In this paper, we prove rigidity of such surfaces when $(M, g)$ is asymptotically flat and has horizon boundary. As a consequence, we obtain an effective version of the positive mass theorem in terms of isoperimetric or, more generally, closed volume-preserving stable CMC surfaces that is appealing from both a physical and a purely geometric point of view. We also include a proof of the following conjecture of R. Schoen: An asymptotically flat Riemannian $3$-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature that contains an unbounded area-minimizing surface is isometric to flat $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Stationary axisymmetric black holes with matter

We provide a geometric framework for the construction of non-vacuum black holes whose metrics are stationary and axisymmetric. Under suitable assumptions we show that the Einstein equations reduce to an Einstein-harmonic map type system and analyze the compatibility of the resulting equations. This framework will be fundamental to our forthcoming construction of metric-stationary axisymmetric bifurcations of Kerr solving the Einstein--Klein--Gordon system, and as such, we include specializations of all of our formulas to the case of a time-periodic massive scalar field.

Isoperimetric structure of asymptotically conical manifolds

We study the isoperimetric structure of Riemannian manifolds that are asymptotic to cones with non-negative Ricci curvature. Specifically, we generalize to this setting the seminal results of G. Huisken and S.-T. Yau on the existence of a canonical foliation by volume preserving stable constant mean curvature surfaces at infinity of asymptotically flat manifolds as well as the results of the second-named author with S. Brendle and J. Metzger on the isoperimetric structure of asymptotically flat manifolds. We also include an observation on the isoperimetric cone angle of such manifolds. This result is a natural analogue of the positive mass theorem in this setting.

Slowly converging Yamabe flows

We characterize the rate of convergence of a converging volume-normalized Yamabe flow in terms of Morse theoretic properties of the limiting metric. If the limiting metric is an integrable critical point for the Yamabe functional (for example, this holds when the critical point is non-degenerate), then we show that the flow converges exponentially fast. In general, we make use of a suitable Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality to prove that the slowest the flow will converge is polynomially. When the limit metric satisfies an Adams-Simon type condition we prove that there exist flows converging to it exactly at a polynomial rate. We conclude by constructing explicit examples to show that this does occur; these seem to be the first examples of a slowly converging solution to a geometric flow.

On discontinuity of planar optimal transport maps

Consider two bounded domains $Ω$ and $Λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$, and two sufficiently regular probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ supported on them. By Brenier's theorem, there exists a unique transportation map $T$ satisfying $T_\#μ=ν$ and minimizing the quadratic cost $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}|T(x)-x|^{2}dμ(x)$. Furthermore, by Caffarelli's regularity theory for the real Monge--Ampère equations, if $Λ$ is convex, $T$ is continuous. We study the reverse problem, namely, when is $T$ discontinuous if $Λ$ fails to be convex? We prove a result guaranteeing the discontinuity of $T$ in terms of the geometries of $Λ$ and $Ω$ in the two-dimensional case. The main idea is to use tools of convex analysis and the extrinsic geometry of $\partialΛ$ to distinguish between Brenier and Alexandrov weak solutions of the Monge--Ampère equation. We also use this approach to give a new proof of a result due to Wolfson and Urbas. We conclude by revisiting an example of Caffarelli, giving a detailed study of a discontinuous map between two explicit domains, and determining precisely where the discontinuities occur.

On the topology and index of minimal surfaces

We show that for an immersed two-sided minimal surface in $R^3$, there is a lower bound on the index depending on the genus and number of ends. Using this, we show the nonexistence of an embedded minimal surface in $R^3$ of index $2$, as conjectured by Choe. Moreover, we show that the index of a immersed two-sided minimal surface with embedded ends is bounded from above and below by a linear function of the total curvature of the surface.

Large isoperimetric regions in asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

We show the existence of isoperimetric regions of sufficiently large volumes in general asymptotically hyperbolic three manifolds. Furthermore, we show that large coordinate spheres in compact perturbations of Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter are uniquely isoperimetric. This is relevant in the context of the asymptotically hyperbolic Penrose inequality. Our results require that the scalar curvature of the metric satisfies $R_{g}\geq -6$, and we construct an example of a compact perturbation of Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter without $R_{g}\geq -6$ so that large centered coordinate spheres are not isoperimetric. The necessity of scalar curvature bounds is in contrast with the analogous uniqueness result proven by Bray for compact perturbations of Schwarzschild, where no such scalar curvature assumption is required. This demonstrates that from the point of view of the isoperimetric problem, mass behaves quite differently in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting compared to the asymptotically flat setting. In particular, in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting, there is an additional quantity, the "renormalized volume," which has a strong effect on the large-scale geometry of volume.
