Tunable spatio-spectral Target Skyrmions and topological multiplexing

Optical Skyrmions have recently garnered much interest providing a potential avenue for high capacity, robust topological information transfer. Typically, Skyrmions are derived from the coupling of just two degrees of freedom (DoFs) limiting their versatility. In this work we realize spatio-spectral Skyrmions derived from the non-separability between three DoFs: wavelength, space and polarization. A compact and simple technique is used to generate the spatio-spectral vector beams (SSVB) carrying the desired Skyrmionic structure, offering simple pathways for complex Skyrmionic beam design. The topological structure, witnessed through a map between the spatio-spectral plane and the Poincaré sphere, exhibits an additional tunable $kπ$ parameter thereby enhancing the number of controllable DoFs. Our three DoF construction allows us to propose a novel topological multiplexing strategy that independently encodes different Skyrmion numbers at different radii of the field. We experimentally demonstrate the practicality of this approach by transmitting and receiving three distinct Skyrmion numbers encoded into a single topological field, for the first form of mode division multiplexing with Skyrmion topology. This work opens up new avenues for dense information encoding using multiple topological channels encoded in a single light field.

Volumetric Processing of Structured Light Integrated in Glass

Light with complex structures in polarization, phase and amplitude, has attracted a lot of attention in a broad range of applications and fundamental studies in classical and quantum optics. Along with the increased interest in structured light comes a need for efficient modulation platforms operating simultaneously for many modes. Multi plane light conversions (MPLC), i.e., multiple consecutive phase modulations in combination with free space propagation, have enabled such unitary transformations, which are usually built by bulky optical components, limited to scalar modulation, or rely on advanced nanofabrication techniques. Here, we demonstrate an efficient, monolithic MPLC architecture through direct laser writing in standard fused silica glass, resulting in a device with a compact form factor of only a few cubic millimeters. Our scheme is based on volumetric engineering of the glass's birefringence through laser-written nanogratings, which enables spatial control over full vectorial light structures. To showcase the approach's potential for integrated multimode-multipath optical networks, we demonstrate multi-mode unitary transformations, mode conversions, and complex beam-splitting for scalar light. We further extend the MPLC operation to vectorial light and implement various polarization-controlled spatial mode operations as well as the transformation of the topology of an optical Skyrmion. Finally, we highlight our scheme's promise for optical communications and implement a miniaturized multiplexer for spatial modes and polarization operating at telecom wavelength.

Multimode interface between optical free-space- and waveguide modes

Free-space and on-chip photonic systems are key components in optical communication networks. While free-space beams allow for the flexible generation and manipulation of spatial modes, integrated waveguides provide compact and stable platforms for on-chip signal processing. Bridging these two domains is essential for scalable multi-mode communication networks. Here, we present an efficient, broadband interface capable of converting multiple higher-order free-space Laguerre-Gauss (LG) modes into corresponding waveguide modes using the multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) scheme. We experimentally demonstrate low-crosstalk mode conversion between various set of three LG modes, and the first three TE modes of a multimode silicon waveguide across the telecom C-band. The system operates passively without active switching and can be adapted to different spatial mode sets. This platform provides a pathway to increased data capacities and may enable more compact and efficient multi-mode optical communication and on-chip processing schemes.

High-efficiency interface between multi-mode and single-mode fibers

Multi-mode fibers (MMFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) are widely used in optical communication networks. MMFs are the practical choice in terms of cost in applications that require short distances. Beyond that, SMFs are necessary because of the modal dispersion in MMFs. Here, we present a method capable of interfacing an MMF with an SMF using a re-programmable multi-plane light conversion scheme (MPLC). We demonstrate that only 3-phase modulations are necessary to achieve MMF-to-SMF coupling efficiencies from 30\% to 70\% for MMF's with core diameters up to 200 microns. We show how the obtained coupling efficiency can be recovered if the output field of the MMF changes entirely, e.g. through strong deformation of the fiber, by simple monitoring of the field. Furthermore, we test the influence of the resolution of both essential devices (field reconstruction and MPLC) on coupling efficiencies. We find that commercially available devices with increased speed and efficiency, such as wavefront sensors and deformable mirrors, are sufficient for establishing an MMF to SMF interface which auto-corrects any decoupling in the kHz regime.
