Production of $η$ and $η'$ mesons in $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions

The production of $η$ and $η'$ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of $5.02$ and $13~{\rm TeV}$, and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of $8.16~{\rm TeV}$. The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity regions $2.5<y_{\rm c.m.}<3.5$ (forward rapidity) and $-4.0<y_{\rm c.m.}<-3.0$ (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The $η$ and $η'$ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for $1.5<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$ and $3<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for $η$ and $η'$ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of $η$ mesons are also used to calculate $η/π^0$ cross section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as $η$ and $η'$ meson fragmentation.

Search for the decay $χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.16 to 4.34 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the decay $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$ in the radiative production $e^{+}e^{-} \to γχ_{c1}(3872)$. No significant signal is observed, and the ratio for the branching fraction of $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$ to $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ$ is measured as $\mathcal{R}\equiv\frac{\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}]}{\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-} J/ψ]}<0.18$ at 90$\%$ confidence level. The upper limit on the product of the cross section $σ[e^{+}e^{-}\toγχ_{c1}(3872)]$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}]$ at each center-of-mass energy is also given. These measurements favor the non-conventional charmonium nature of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state.

Search for the $e^+e^- \to ϕχ_{c1}(3872)$ process at BESIII

Based on 368.5 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at center-of-mass energies 4.914 and 4.946 GeV by the BESIII detector, the $e^+e^- \to ϕχ_{c1}(3872)$ process is searched for the first time. No significant signal is observed and the upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross section $σ(e^+e^- \to ϕχ_{c1}(3872))$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ]$ at 4.914 and 4.946 GeV are set to be 0.85 and 0.96 pb, respectively. These measurements provide useful information for the production of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ at $e^+e^-$ collider and deepen our understanding about the nature of this particle.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $D^+ \to τ^+ν_τ$

By analyzing $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of 7.9~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV, the branching fraction of $D^+\toτ^+ν_τ$ is determined as $\mathcal{B}=(9.9\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.5_\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-4}$. Taking the most precise result $\mathcal{B}(D^+\toμ^+ν_μ)=(3.981\pm 0.079_\mathrm{stat}\pm0.040_\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-4}$, we determine $R_{τ/μ} = Γ(D^+\toτ^+ν_τ)/Γ(D^+\toμ^+ν_μ)= 2.49\pm0.31$, achieving a factor of two improvement in precision compared to the previous BESIII result. This measurement is in agreement with the standard model prediction of lepton flavor universality within one standard deviation.

A measurement of $ΔΓ_{s}$

Using a dataset corresponding to $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018 in proton-proton collisions, the decay-time distributions of the decay modes $B_s^0 \rightarrow J/ψη'$ and $B_s^0 \rightarrow J/ψπ^{+} π^{-}$ are studied. The decay-width difference between the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B_s^0$ meson is measured to be $ΔΓ_s = 0.087 \pm 0.012 \pm 0.009 \, \mathrm{ps}^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Partial Wave Analysis of $J/ψ\rightarrow γγϕ$

Using a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial-wave analysis of the decay $γγϕ$ is performed to investigate the intermediate resonances in $J/ψ\rightarrowγR, R\arγϕ$. Resonances including $f_{1}(1285)$, $η(1405)$, $f_{1}(1420)$, $f_{1}(1510)$, $f_{2}(1525)$, $X(1835)$, $f_{2}(1950)$, $f_{2}(2010)$, $f_{0}(2200)$ and $η_{c}$ have been detected with statistical significance greater than 5$σ$. The product branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowγR, R\ar γϕ)$ are reported, and the resonance parameters of $η(1405)$ and $X(1835)$ have been precisely determined. It is more probable that $η(1405)$ and $X(1835)$ act as the first - and second - excited states of $η^{\prime}$, respectively. The observation of $η_{c}\rightarrowγϕ$ holds great significance for the in depth study of charmonium properties. No evidence of $η(1295)$, $η_{1}(1855)$ or X(2370) is found. The measured upper limits of relevant BF products do not conflict with theoretical expectations for X(2370) as a pseudoscalar glueball and $η_{1}(1855)$ as a hybrid state.

Measurement of $C\!P$ violation observables in $D^+\rightarrow K^-K^+π^+$ decays

A search for violation of the charge-parity $C\!P$ symmetry in the $D^+\rightarrow K^-K^+π^+$ decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the $D^+$ and $D^-$ phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the $D^+_{s}\rightarrow K^-K^+π^+$ decay as a control channel. The $p$-value for the hypothesis of $C\!P$ conservation is $8.1\%$. The $C\!P$ asymmetry observables $A_{C\!P|S}^{ϕπ^+} = (0.95 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.26_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_{C\!P|S}^{\overline{K}^{*0}K^+} = (-0.26 \pm 0.56_{ stat} \pm 0.18_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ are also measured. These results show no evidence of $C\!P$ violation and represent the most sensitive search performed through the phase space of a multibody decay.

Study of charmonium production via the decay to $p\bar{p}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV$

Charmonium production cross-section in proton-proton collisions is measured at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13\,TeV$ using decays to $p\bar{p}$ final state. The study is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.2\,{fb}^{-1}$ collected in 2018 with the $LHCb$ detector. The production cross-section of the $η_c$ meson is measured in a rapidity range of $2.0 < y < 4.0$ and in a transverse momentum range of $5.0 < p_{T} < 20.0\,{GeV/\it{c}}$, which is extended compared with previous $LHCb$ analyses. The differential cross-section is measured in bins of $p_{T}$ and, for the first time, of $y$. Upper limits, at 90% and 95% confidence levels, on the $η_c(2S)$ and $h_c(1P)$ prompt production cross-sections are determined for the first time.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $D^+_s\to \ell^+ν_\ell$ via $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}_{s} D^{*-}_{s}$

Based on $10.64~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector, we study the leptonic $D^+_s$ decays using the $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}_{s} D^{*-}_{s}$ process. The branching fractions of $D_s^+\to\ell^+ν_{\ell}\,(\ell=μ,τ)$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ)=(0.547\pm0.026_{\rm stat}\pm0.016_{\rm syst})\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toτ^+ν_τ)=(5.60\pm0.16_{\rm stat}\pm0.20_{\rm syst})\%$, respectively. The product of the decay constant and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=(246.5\pm5.9_{\rm stat}\pm3.6_{\rm syst}\pm0.5_{\rm input})_{μν}~\mathrm{MeV}$ and $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=(252.7\pm3.6_{\rm stat}\pm4.5_{\rm syst}\pm0.6_{\rm input}))_{τν}~\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Taking the value of $|V_{cs}|$ from a global fit in the Standard Model, we obtain ${f_{D^+_s}}=(252.8\pm6.0_{\rm stat}\pm3.7_{\rm syst}\pm0.6_{\rm input})_{μν}$ MeV and ${f_{D^+_s}}=(259.2\pm3.6_{\rm stat}\pm4.5_{\rm syst}\pm0.6_{\rm input})_{τν}$ MeV, respectively. Measurements of the branching fractions of semileptonic $D^{+}_s$ decays via $e^+e^-\to D_s^{*+}D_s^{*-}$

We measure the absolute branching fractions of semileptonic $D^+_s$ decays via the $e^+e^-\to D_s^{*+}D_s^{*-}$ process using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $10.64~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV. The branching fractions are ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to ηe^+ν_e)=(2.35\pm0.11_{\rm stat}\pm 0.10_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to η^\prime e^+ν_e)=(0.82\pm0.09_{\rm stat}\pm 0.04_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to ϕe^+ν_e)=(2.21\pm0.16_{\rm stat}\pm 0.11_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to f_0(980) e^+ν_e,f_0(980)\toπ^+π^-)=(0.15\pm0.02_{\rm stat}\pm 0.01_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to K^0 e^+ν_e)=(0.24\pm0.04_{\rm stat}\pm 0.01_{\rm syst})\%,$ and ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to K^{*0} e^+ν_e)=(0.19\pm0.03_{\rm stat}\pm 0.01_{\rm syst})\%.$ These results are consistent with those measured via the $e^+e^-\to D_s^{*\pm}D_s^{\mp}$ process by BESIII and CLEO. The hadronic transition form factors $D^+_s\to ηe^+ν_e$, $D^+_s\to η^\prime e^+ν_e$, and $D^+_s\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ at four-momentum transfer squared $q^2$ = 0 are determined to be $f^η_+(0) = 0.482 \pm 0.011_{\rm stat} \pm 0.009_{\rm syst}\pm0.004_{\rm input},$ $f^{η^{\prime}}_+(0) = 0.562 \pm 0.031_{\rm stat} \pm 0.014_{\rm syst}\pm0.003_{\rm input},$ and $f^{K^0}_+(0) = 0.624 \pm 0.052_{\rm stat} \pm 0.013_{\rm syst}\pm0.002_{\rm input}.$

Test of lepton universality and measurement of the form factors of $D^0\to K^{*}(892)^-μ^+ν_μ$

We report a first study of the semileptonic decay $D^0\rightarrow K^-π^0μ^{+}ν_μ$ by analyzing an $e^+e^-$ annihilation data sample of $7.9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. The absolute branching fraction of $D^0\to K^-π^0μ^{+}ν_μ$ is measured for the first time to be $(0.729 \pm 0.014_{\rm stat} \pm 0.011_{\rm syst})\%$. Based on an amplitude analysis, the $S\text{-}{\rm wave}$ contribution is determined to be $(5.76 \pm 0.35_{\rm stat} \pm 0.29_{\rm syst})\%$ of the total decay rate in addition to the dominated $K^{*}(892)^-$ component. The branching fraction of $D^0\to K^{*}(892)^-μ^+ν_μ$ is given to be $(2.062 \pm 0.039_{\rm stat} \pm 0.032_{\rm syst})\%$, which improves the precision of the world average by a factor of 5. Combining with the world average of ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^{*}(892)^-e^+ν_e)$, the ratio of the branching fractions obtained is $\frac{{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^{*}(892)^-μ^+ν_μ)}{{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^{*}(892)^-e^+ν_e)} = 0.96\pm0.08$, in agreement with lepton flavor universality. Furthermore, assuming single-pole dominance parameterization, the most precise hadronic form factor ratios for $D^0\to K^{*}(892)^{-} μ^+ν_μ$ are extracted to be $r_{V}=V(0)/A_1(0)=1.37 \pm 0.09_{\rm stat} \pm 0.03_{\rm syst}$ and $r_{2}=A_2(0)/A_1(0)=0.76 \pm 0.06_{\rm stat} \pm 0.02_{\rm syst}$.

Study of the rare decay $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-μ^+μ^-$

The rare electromagnetic $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-μ^+μ^-$ decay is observed with a significance greatly exceeding the discovery threshold, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016-2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The rate of this decay is measured relative to that of the $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ mode. Using the QED model for the four-muon decay in the efficiency estimation, its branching fraction is determined to be \begin{equation*} {\mathcal{B}}(J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-μ^+μ^-) = (1.13\pm0.10\pm0.05\pm0.01)\times 10^{-6}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ decay.

Measurement of $D^0-\overline{D}^0$ mixing and search for $CP$ violation with $D^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ decays

A measurement of the time-dependent ratio of the $D^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ to $\overline{D}^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ decay rates is reported. The analysis uses a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2015 through 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The $D^0$ meson is required to originate from a $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0π^+$ decay, such that its flavor at production is inferred from the charge of the accompanying pion. The measurement is performed simultaneously for the $K^+π^-$ and $K^-π^+$ final states, allowing both mixing and $CP$-violation parameters to be determined. The value of the ratio of the decay rates at production is determined to be $R_{Kπ} = (343.1 \pm 2.0) \times 10^{-5}$. The mixing parameters are measured to be $c_{Kπ} = (51.4 \pm 3.5) \times 10^{-4}$ and $c_{Kπ}^{\prime} = (13 \pm 4) \times 10^{-6}$, where $\sqrt{R_{Kπ}}c_{Kπ}$ is the linear coefficient of the expansion of the ratio as a function of decay time in units of the $D^0$ lifetime, and $c_{Kπ}^{\prime}$ is the quadratic coefficient, both averaged between the $K^+π^-$ and $K^-π^+$ final states. The precision is improved relative to the previous best measurement by approximately 60%. No evidence for $CP$ violation is found.

Observation of new charmonium(-like) states in $B^+ \to D^{*\pm} D^{\mp} K^+$ decays

A study of resonant structures in $B^{+}\rightarrow{D^{\ast+}D^{-}K^{+}}$ and $B^{+}\rightarrow{D^{\ast-}D^{+}K^{+}}$ decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7, 8$, and $13$ TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to $D^{\ast-}D^{+}$ and $D^{\ast+}D^{-}$ states linked by $C$ parity. This procedure allows the $C$-parities of resonances in the $D^{\ast\pm}D^{\mp}$ mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium(-like) states are observed decaying into $D^{\ast\pm}D^{\mp}$: $η_c(3945)$, $h_c(4000)$, $χ_{c1}(4010)$ and $h_c(4300)$, with quantum numbers $J^{PC}$ equal to $0^{-+}$, $1^{+-}$, $1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$, respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the $T_{\bar{c}\bar{s}0}^{*}(2870)^{0}$ and $T_{\bar{c}\bar{s}1}^{*}(2900)^{0}$ resonances in the $D^-K^+$ mass spectrum, already observed in the $B^+ \to D^+ D^- K^+$ decay, is confirmed in a different production channel.

Measurements of the branching fraction ratio $\cal{B}(ϕ\to μ^+μ^-)/\cal{B}(ϕ\to e^+e^-)$ with charm meson decays

Measurements of the branching fraction ratio ${\cal{B}(ϕ\to μ^+ μ^-)/\cal{B}(ϕ\to e^+e^-)}$ with ${D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+} ϕ}$ and ${D^{+} \to π^{+} ϕ}$ decays, denoted $R^{s}_{ϕπ}$ and $R^{d}_{ϕπ}$, are presented. The analysis is performed using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4$\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The branching fractions are normalised with respect to the ${B^{+} \to K^{+} J/ψ(\to e^+e^-)}$ and ${B^{+} \to K^{+} J/ψ(\to μ^+μ^-)}$ decay modes. The combination of the results yields $$ R_{ϕπ} = 1.022 \pm 0.012 \,({\rm stat}) \, \pm 0.048 \,({\rm syst}). $$ The result is compatible with previous measurements of the $ϕ\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ branching fractions and predictions based on the Standard Model.

Observation of $Λ_c^+ \to Λa_0(980)^+$ and Evidence for $Σ(1380)^+$ in $Λ_c^+ \to Λπ^+ η$

Based on $6.1~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.600 to 4.843 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis of $Λ_c^+\toΛπ^+η$ is performed, and branching fractions and decay asymmetry parameters of intermediate processes are determined. The process $Λ_c^+\toΛa_0(980)^+$ is observed for the first time, and evidence for the pentaquark candidate $Σ(1380)^+$ decaying into $Λπ^+$ is found with statistical significance larger than $3σ$ with mass and width fixed to theoretical predictions. The branching fraction product $\mathcal{B}[Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λa_0(980)^+] \; \mathcal{B}[ a_0(980)^+ \to π^{+}η]$ is determined to be $(1.05 \pm 0.16_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.07_{\mathrm{ext}})\%$, which is larger than theoretical calculations by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Here the third (external) systematic is from $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^+ η)$. Finally, we precisely obtain the absolute branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^+ η) = (1.94 \pm 0.07_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.11_{\mathrm{syst}})\%$.

Measurement of $CP$ violation in ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays

A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $ϕ_{s}$ and $|λ|$ results in \begin{align} ϕ_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |λ_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. For the first time in a single measurement, $CP$ symmetry is observed to be violated in ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays with a significance exceeding six standard deviations.
