Search for the radiative decays $D^+\toγρ^+$ and $D^+\toγK^{*+}$

We search for the radiative decays $D^{+} \to γρ^+$ and $D^{+} \to γK^{*+}$ using 20.3~fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits on the branching fractions of $D^{+} \to γρ^+$ and $D^{+} \to γK^{*+}$ at 90\% confidence level are set to be $1.3\times10^{-5}$ and $1.8\times10^{-5}$, respectively.

Observation of an axial-vector state in the study of $ψ(3686) \to ϕηη'$ decay

Using (2712.4 $\pm$ 14.3)$\times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a partial wave analysis of the decay $ψ(3686) \to ϕηη' $ is performed with the covariant tensor approach. An axial-vector state with a mass near 2.3 $\rm GeV/c^2$ is observed for the first time. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 $\pm 9_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 30_{\mathrm{syst}}\,\rm MeV/c^2$ and 89 $\pm 15_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 26_{\mathrm{syst}}\,\rm MeV$, respectively. The product branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to X(2300) η') \mathcal{B}(X(2300)\to ϕη)$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to X(2300) η)\mathcal{B}(X(2300)\to ϕη')$ are determined to be (4.8 $\pm 1.3_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.7_{\mathrm{syst}})\times 10^{-6}$ and (2.2 $\pm 0.7_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.7_{\mathrm{syst}})\times 10^{-6}$, respectively. The branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to ϕηη')$ is measured for the first time to be (3.14$\pm0.17_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.24_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-5}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Precision measurement of the $Ξ^-_b$ baryon lifetime

A sample of $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$ and collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Run 2, is used to measure the ratio of the lifetime of the $Ξ^-_b$ baryon to that of the $Λ^0_b$ baryon, $r_τ\equivτ_{Ξ^-_b}/τ_{Λ^0_b}$. The value ${r_τ=1.076\pm0.013\pm0.006}$ is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This value is averaged with the corresponding value from Run 1 to obtain ${r_τ^{\rm Run\,1,2} = 1.078\pm0.012\pm0.007}$. Multiplying by the world-average value of the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime yields $τ_{Ξ^-_b}^{\rm Run~1,2} = 1.578\pm0.018\pm0.010\pm0.011$ ps, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime. This measurement improves the precision of the current world average of the $Ξ^-_b$ lifetime by about a factor of two, and is in good agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions.

Study of $b$-hadron decays to $\mathitΛ_{c}^+ h^- h^{\prime -}$ final states

Decays of $\mathitΞ_{b}^-$ and $\mathitΩ_{b}^-$ baryons to $\mathitΛ_{c}^+ h^- h^{\prime -}$ final states, with $h^- h^{\prime -}$ being $π^-π^-$, $K^-π^-$ and $K^-K^-$ meson pairs, are searched for using data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample studied corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $8.7\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 7$, $8$ and $13\,\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The products of the relative branching fractions and fragmentation fractions for each signal mode, relative to the $B^- \to \mathitΛ_{c}^+ \overline{p} π^-$ mode, are measured, with $\mathitΞ_{b}^- \to\mathitΛ_{c}^+ K^- π^-$, $\mathitΞ_{b}^- \to\mathitΛ_{c}^+ K^- K^-$ and $\mathitΩ_{b}^- \to\mathitΛ_{c}^+ K^- K^-$ decays being observed at over $5\,σ$ significance. The $\mathitΞ_{b}^- \to\mathitΛ_{c}^+ K^- π^-$ mode is also used to measure the $\mathitΞ_{b}^-$ production asymmetry, which is found to be consistent with zero. In addition, the $B^- \to \mathitΛ_{c}^+ \overline{p} K^-$ decay is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the $B^- \to \mathitΛ_{c}^+ \overline{p} π^-$ mode.

Search for the rare decay of charmed baryon $Λ_c^+$ into $p μ^+ μ^-$ final state

A search for the nonresonant $Λ_c^+ \to p μ^+ μ^-$ decay is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$. No evidence for the decay is found in the dimuon invariant-mass regions where the expected contributions of resonances is subdominant. The upper limit on the branching fraction of the $Λ_c^+ \to p μ^+ μ^-$ decay is determined to be $2.9~(3.2) \times 10^{-8}$ at 90% (95%) confidence level. The branching fractions in the dimuon invariant-mass regions dominated by the $η$, $ρ$ and $ω$ resonances are also determined.

Search for $D^0\to K^-ηe^+ν_e$, $D^+\to K_S^0 ηe^+ν_e$ and $D^+\to ηηe^+ν_e$ decays

By analyzing $e^+e^-$ annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.93 fb$^{-1}$, collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the semileptonic decays $D^0\to K^-ηe^+ν_e$, $D^+\to K_S^0 ηe^+ν_e$ and $D^+\to ηηe^+ν_e$ for the first time. We present evidence for $D^0\to K^-ηe^+ν_e$ with a significance of $3.3σ$. The branching fraction of $D^0\to K^-ηe^+ν_e$ is measured to be $(0.84_{-0.34}^{+0.29}\pm0.22)\times 10^{-4}$. Here, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. No significant signals are observed for the decays $D^+\to K_S^0 ηe^+ν_e$ and $D^+\to ηηe^+ν_e$ and we set the upper limits on their branching fractions.

Measurement of $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ production in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV at LHCb

A study of prompt $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ production in proton-lead collisions is performed with the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV in 2016 in $p$Pb and Pb$p$ collisions with an estimated integrated luminosity of approximately 12.5 and 17.4 nb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section, as well as the $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ to $Λ_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section ratio, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity and compared to latest theory predictions. The forward-backward asymmetry is also measured as a function of the $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ transverse momentum.

Search for $X(3872)\toπ^0π^0χ_{c1,2}$

Using 10.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector with center-of-mass energies between 4.15 GeV and 4.30 GeV, we search for the decays $X(3872)\toπ^0π^0χ_{c1,2}$, where the $X(3872)$ is produced in $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$. No evidence above $3σ$ is found for either decay. Upper limits at the $90\%$ C.L. on the branching fractions of $X(3872)\toπ^0π^0χ_{c1,2}$ normalized to the branching fraction of $X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$ are set to be $\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^0π^0χ_{c1})/\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ) < 1.1$ and $\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^0π^0χ_{c2})/\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ) < 0.5$, taking into account both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Tracking of charged particles with nanosecond lifetimes at LHCb

A method is presented to reconstruct charged particles with lifetimes between 10 ps and 10 ns, which considers a combination of their decay products and the partial tracks created by the initial charged particle. Using the $Ξ^-$ baryon as a benchmark, the method is demonstrated with simulated events and proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb${}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector in 2018. Significant improvements in the angular resolution and the signal purity are obtained. The method is implemented as part of the LHCb Run 3 event trigger in a set of requirements to select detached hyperons. This is the first demonstration of the applicability of this approach at the LHC, and the first to show its scaling with instantaneous luminosity.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $B^{+}\to D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ decays

The decays of the $B^{+}$ meson to the final state $D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ are studied in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The ratio of branching fractions of the $B^{+}\to D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0}\to D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}$ decays is measured to be $0.173\pm 0.006\pm 0.010$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Using partially reconstructed $D^{*+}_{s}\to D^{+}_{s}γ$ and $D^{+}_{s}π^{0}$ decays, the ratio of branching fractions between the $B^{+}\to D^{*-}D^{*+}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{+}\to D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ decays is determined as $1.31\pm 0.07\pm 0.14$. An amplitude analysis of the $B^{+}\to D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ decay is performed for the first time, revealing dominant contributions from known excited charm resonances decaying to the $D^{*-}π^{+}$ final state. No significant evidence of exotic contributions in the $D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ or $D^{*-}D^{+}_{s}$ channels is found. The fit fraction of the scalar state $T_{c\bar{s} 0}^{\ast}(2900)^{++}$ observed in the $B^{+}\to D^{-}D^{+}_{s}π^{+}$ decay is determined to be less than 2.3% at a 90% confidence level.

Measurements of the $CP$-even fractions of $D^0\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ and $D^0\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ at BESIII

The $CP$-even fractions ($F_{+}$) of the decays $D^0\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ and $D^0\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ are measured with a quantum-correlated $ψ(3770)\to D\bar{D}$ data sample collected by the BESIII experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.93 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The results are $F_{+}^{π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}}=0.9406\pm0.0036\pm0.0021$ and $F_{+}^{K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}}=0.631\pm0.014\pm0.011$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These measurements are consistent with the previous determinations, and the uncertainties for $F_{+}^{π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}}$ and $F_{+}^{K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}}$ are reduced by factors of 3.9 and 2.6, respectively. The reported results provide important inputs for the precise measurement of the angle $γ$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and indirect $CP$ violation in charm mixing.

The LHCb upgrade I

The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

Search for time-dependent $CP$ violation in $D^0 \rightarrow π^+ π^- π^0$ decays

A measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $D^0 \rightarrow π^+ π^- π^0$ decays using a $pp$ collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in 2012 and from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.7$\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, is presented. The initial flavour of each $D^0$ candidate is determined from the charge of the pion produced in the $D^*(2010)^+ \rightarrow D^0 π^+$ decay. The decay $D^0 \rightarrow K^- π^+ π^0$ is used as a control channel to validate the measurement procedure. The gradient of the time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry, $ΔY$, in $D^0 \rightarrow π^+ π^- π^0$ decays is measured to be \begin{equation*} ΔY = (-1.3 \pm 6.3 \pm 2.4) \times 10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, which is compatible with $CP$ conservation.

Study of the decay $D^0\rightarrow ρ(770)^-e^+ν_e$

We present a study of the semileptonic decay $D^0\rightarrow π^-π^0e^{+}ν_{e}$ using an $e^+e^-$ annihilation data sample of $7.93~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. The branching fraction of $D^0\to ρ(770)^-e^+ν_e$ is measured to be $(1.439 \pm 0.033(\rm stat.) \pm 0.027(\rm syst.)) \times10^{-3}$, which is a factor 1.6 more precise than previous measurements. By performing an amplitude analysis, we measure the hadronic form-factor ratios of $D^0\to ρ(770)^-e^+ν_e$ at $q^2=0$ assuming the single-pole-dominance parametrization: $r_{V}=V(0)/A_1(0)=1.548\pm0.079(\rm stat.)\pm0.041(\rm syst.)$ and $r_{2}=A_2(0)/A_1(0)=0.823\pm0.056(\rm stat.)\pm0.026(\rm syst.)$.

Observation of strangeness enhancement with charmed mesons in high-multiplicity $p\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=8.16\,$TeV

The production of prompt $D^+_{s}$ and $D^+$ mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in proton-lead ($p\mathrm{Pb}$) collisions in both the forward ($1.5<y^*<4.0$) and backward ($-5.0<y^*<-2.5$) rapidity regions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt {s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=8.16\,$TeV. The nuclear modification factors of both $D^+_{s}$ and $D^+$ mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, and rapidity. In addition, the $D^+_{s}$ to $D^+$ cross-section ratio is measured as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced $D^+_{s}$ to $D^+$ production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ range, in particular at low $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity $p\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions.

Search for the radiative transition $χ_{c1}(3872)\toγψ_2(3823)$

Using 9.0 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.178 to 4.278 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform the first search for the radiative transition $χ_{c1}(3872)\toγψ_2(3823)$. No $χ_{c1}(3872)\toγψ_2(3823)$ signal is observed. The upper limit on the ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c1}(3872)\toγψ_2(3823), ψ_2(3823)\toγχ_{c1})/\mathcal{B}(χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ)$ is set as 0.075 at the 90\% confidence level. Our result contradicts theoretical predictions under the assumption that the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ is the pure charmonium state $χ_{c1}(2P)$.
