Phase diagram of the mean field model of simplicial gravity

We discuss the phase diagram of the balls in boxes model, with a varying number of boxes. The model can be regarded as a mean-field model of simplicial gravity. We analyse in detail the case of weights of the form $p(q) = q^{-β}$, which correspond to the measure term introduced in the simplicial quantum gravity simulations. The system has two phases~: {\em elongated} ({\em fluid}) and {\em crumpled}. For $β\in (2,\infty)$ the transition between these two phases is first order, while for $β\in (1,2]$ it is continuous. The transition becomes softer when $β$ approaches unity and eventually disappears at $β=1$. We then generalise the discussion to an arbitrary set of weights. Finally, we show that if one introduces an additional kinematic bound on the average density of balls per box then a new {\em condensed} phase appears in the phase diagram. It bears some similarity to the {\em crinkled} phase of simplicial gravity discussed recently in models of gravity interacting with matter fields.

The Ising Model on a Quenched Ensemble of c = -5 Gravity Graphs

We study with Monte Carlo methods an ensemble of c=-5 gravity graphs, generated by coupling a conformal field theory with central charge c=-5 to two-dimensional quantum gravity. We measure the fractal properties of the ensemble, such as the string susceptibility exponent gamma_s and the intrinsic fractal dimensions d_H. We find gamma_s = -1.5(1) and d_H = 3.36(4), in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions. In addition, we study the critical behavior of an Ising model on a quenched ensemble of the c=-5 graphs and show that it agrees, within numerical accuracy, with theoretical predictions for the critical behavior of an Ising model coupled dynamically to two-dimensional quantum gravity, provided the total central charge of the matter sector is c=-5. From this we conjecture that the critical behavior of the Ising model is determined solely by the average fractal properties of the graphs, the coupling to the geometry not playing an important role.

Correlation functions and critical behaviour on fluctuating geometries

We study the two-point correlation function in the model of branched polymers and its relation to the critical behaviour of the model. We show that the correlation function has a universal scaling form in the generic phase with the only scale given by the size of the polymer. We show that the origin of the singularity of the free energy at the critical point is different from that in the standard statistical models. The transition is related to the change of the dimensionality of the system.

Balls in Boxes and Quantum Gravity

Four dimensional simplicial gravity has been studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations for some time, the main outcome of the studies being that the model undergoes a discontinuous phase transition between an elongated and a crumpled phase when one changes the curvature (Newton) coupling. In the crumpled phase there are singular vertices growing extensively with the volume of the system whereas the elongated phase resembles a branched-polymer. We have postulated that this behaviour is a manifestation of the constrained-mean-field scenario as realised in the Branched Polymer or Balls-in-Boxes model. These models share all the features of 4D simplicial gravity except that they exhibit a continuous phase transition. We note here that this defect can be remedied by a suitable choice of ensemble.

Collapse of 4D random geometries

We extend the analysis of the Backgammon model to an ensemble with a fixed number of balls and a fluctuating number of boxes. In this ensemble the model exhibits a first order phase transition analogous to the one in higher dimensional simplicial gravity. The transition relies on a kinematic condensation and reflects a crisis of the integration measure which is probably a part of the more general problem with the measure for functional integration over higher (d>2) dimensional Riemannian structures.

Focusing on the Fixed Point of 4D Simplicial Gravity

Our earlier renormalization group analysis of simplicial gravity is extended. A high statistics study of the volume and coupling constant dependence of the cumulants of the node distribution is carried out. It appears that the phase transition of the theory is of first order, contrary to what is generally believed.

Condensation in the Backgammon model

We analyse the properties of a very simple ``balls-in-boxes'' model which can exhibit a phase transition between a fluid and a condensed phase, similar to behaviour encountered in models of random geometries in one, two and four dimensions. This model can be viewed as a generalisation of the backgammon model introduced by Ritort as an example of glassy behaviour without disorder.

Appearence of Mother Universe and Singular Vertices in Random Geometries

We discuss a general mechanism that drives the phase transition in the canonical ensemble in models of random geometries. As an example we consider a solvable model of branched polymers where the transition leading from tree- to bush-like polymers relies on the occurrence of vertices with a large number of branches. The source of this transition is a combination of the constraint on the total number of branches in the canonical ensemble and a nonlinear one-vertex action. We argue that exactly the same mechanism, which we call constrained mean-field, plays the crucial role in the phase transition in 4d simplicial gravity and, when applied to the effective one-vertex action, explains the occurrence of both the mother universe and singular vertices at the transition point when the system enters the crumpled phase.

Correlations in fluctuating geometries

We compare two definitions of connected correlation functions in fluctuating geometries. We show results of the MC simulations for 4D dynamical triangulation in the elongated phase and compare them with the exact calculations of correlation functions in the branched polymer model.

Phase transition in fluctuating branched geometry

We study grand--canonical and canonical properties of the model of branched polymers proposed in \cite{adfo}. We show that the model has a fourth order phase transition and calculate critical exponents. At the transition the exponent $γ$ of the grand-canonical ensemble, analogous to the string susceptibility exponent of surface models, $γ\sim 0.3237525...$ is the first known example of positive $γ$ which is not of the form $1/n,\, n=2,3,\ldots$. We show that a slight modification of the model produces a continuos spectrum of $γ$'s in the range $(0,1/2]$ and changes the order of the transition.

Effective Sampling of Random Surfaces by Baby Universe Surgery

We propose a new, very efficient algorithm for sampling of random surfaces in the Monte Carlo simulations, based on so-called baby universe surgery, i.e. cutting and pasting of baby universes. It drastically reduces slowing down as compared to the standard local flip algorithm, thereby allowing simulations of large random surfaces coupled to matter fields. As an example we investigate the efficiency of the algorithm for 2d simplicial gravity interacting with a one-component free scalar field. The radius of gyration is the slowest mode in the standard local flip/shift algorithm. The use of baby universe surgery decreases the autocorrelation time by three order of magnitude for a random surface of $0.5 \cdot 10^5$ triangles, where it is found to be $τ_{int} = 150 \pm 31$ sweeps.

Complete angular analysis of the decay cascade $B \rightarrow D^{**}( \rightarrow D^*(\rightarrow D π) + π) + W(\rightarrow l ν)$

We develop a general algorithm for describing angular decay distributions in cascade decay chains of arbitrary length. The general algorithm is used to study joint angular decay distributions for the cascade decay $B\rightarrow D^{**}( \rightarrow D^*(\rightarrow D π)+π) + W(\rightarrow lν)$ where the $D^{**}$ is a generic $P$-wave charm meson state. Lepton mass effects are fully incorporated
