Effect of pressure on the structural phase transition and superconductivity in (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x = 0$ and 0.45) single crystals

The effects of pressure up to $\sim 20$ kbar, on the structural phase transition of lightly Sn-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, as well as on the superconducting transition temperature and upper critical field of (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been studied. Both transitions decrease with pressure in an almost linear fashion. Under pressure, the upper critical field curve, $H_{c2}(T)$, shifts down in temperature to follow the zero field $T_c$ with very little change in slope.

Muon spin relaxation studies of magnetic order and superfluid density in antiferromagnetic NdOFeAs, BaFe2As2 and superconducting (Ba,K)Fe2As2

Zero-field (ZF) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements have revealed static commensurate magnetic order of Fe moments in NdOFeAs below $T_{N} \sim 135$ K, with the ordered moment size nearly equal to that in LaOFeAs, and confirmed similar behavior in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. In single crystals of superconducting (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, $μ$SR spectra indicate static magnetism with incommensurate or short-ranged spin structure in $\sim$ 70 % of volume below $T_{N} \sim$ 80 K, coexisting with remaining volume which exhibits superfluid-response consistent with nodeless gap below $T_{c}\sim 30$ K.

Optical spectroscopy of superconducting Ba{0.55}K{0.45}Fe2As2: evidence for strong coupling to low energy bosons

Optical spectroscopy on single crystals of the new iron arsenide superconductor Ba{0.55}K{0.45}Fe2As2 shows that the infrared spectrum consists of two major components: a strong metallic Drude band and a well separated mid infrared absorption centered at 0.7 eV. It is difficult to separate the two components unambiguously but several fits of Lorentzian peaks suggest a model with a Drude peak having a plasma frequency of 1.8 to 2.1 eV and a midinfrared peak with a plasma frequency of 2.5 eV. In contrast to the cuprate superconductors the scattering rate obtained from the extended Drude model saturates at 150 meV as compared to 500 meV for a typical cuprate. Detailed analysis of the frequency dependent scattering rate shows that the charge carriers interact with broad bosonic spectrum with a peak at 25 meV and a coupling constant lambda =approx 2 at low temperature. As the temperature increases this coupling weakens to lambda=0.6 at ambient temperature. This suggests a bosonic spectrum that is similar to what is seen in the lower Tc cuprates.

Momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in NdFeAsO1-xFx single crystals measured by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in NdFeAsO1-xFx single crystals. We find that the Gamma hole pocket is fully gapped below the superconducting transition temperature. The value of the superconducting gap is 15 +- 1.5 meV and its anisotropy around the hole pocket is smaller than 20% of this value. This is consistent with an isotropic or anisotropic s-wave symmetry of the order parameter or exotic d-wave symmetry with nodes located off the Fermi surface sheets. This is a significant departure from the situation in the cuprates, pointing to possibility that the superconductivity in the iron arsenic based system arises from a different mechanism.

First order structural phase transition in CaFe$_2$As$_2$

CaFe$_2$As$_2$ has been synthesized and found to form in the tetragonal, ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure with lattice parameters $a = 3.912(68) Å$ and $c = 11.667(45) Å$. Upon cooling through 170 K, CaFe$_2$As$_2$ undergoes a first order, structural phase transition to a low temperature, orthorhombic phase with a $2 - 3$ K range of hysteresis and coexistence. This transition is clearly evident in microscopic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. CaFe$_2$As$_2$ is the third member of the AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) family to exhibit such a dramatic phase transition and is a promising candidate for studies of doping induced superconductivity.

The Fermi surface of Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2 and its evolution with doping

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the electronic properties of the newly discovered iron-arsenic superconductor, Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2 and non-supercondcuting BaFe2As2. Our study indicates that the Fermi surface of the undoped, parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ consists of hole pocket(s) at Gamma (0,0) and larger electron pocket(s) at X (1,0), in general agreement with full-potential linearized plane wave (FLAPW) calculations. Upon doping with potassium, the hole pocket expands and the electron pocket becomes smaller with its bottom approaching the chemical potential. Such an evolution of the Fermi surface is consistent with hole doping within a rigid band shift model. Our results also indicate that FLAPW calculation is a reasonable approach for modeling the electronic properties of both undoped and K-doped iron arsenites.

Fermi surface and strong coupling superconductivity in single crystal NdFeAsO_{1-x}F_x

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the electronic properties of the newly discovered oxypnictide superconductor, NdFeAsO_{1-x}F_x. We find a well-defined Fermi surface that consists of a large hole pocket at the Brillouin zone center and a smaller electron pocket in each corner of the Brillouin zone. The overall location and shape of the Fermi surface agrees reasonably well with calculations. The band dispersion is quite complicated with many flat bands located just below the chemical potential. We observe a superconducting gap of 20 meV, which indicates that this system is in the strong coupling regime. The emergence of a coherent peak below the critical temperature Tc and diminished spectral weight at the chemical potential above Tc closely resembles the spectral characteristics of the cuprates.

Structural transition and anisotropic properties of single crystalline SrFe2As2

Plate-like single crystals of SrFe2As2 as large as 3x3x0.5 mm3 have been grown out of Sn flux. The SrFe2As2 single crystals show a structural phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic phase at To = 198 K, and do not show any sign of superconductivity down to 1.8 K. The structural transition is accompanied by an anomaly in the electrical resistivity, Hall resistivity, specific heat, and the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. In an intermediate temperature range from 198 K to 160 K, single crystal X-ray diffraction suggests a coexistence of the high-temperature tetragonal and the low-temperature orthorhombic phases.

Interplay of Local-Moment Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in ErRh$_4$B$_4$ Single Crystals

Tunnel-diode resonator technique was used to study crystals of ferromagnetic re-entrant superconductor, ErRh$_{4}$B$_{4}$. At the boundary between ferromagnetism (FM) and superconductivity (SC), dynamic magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T,H)$, exhibits highly asymmetric behavior upon warming and cooling as well as enhanced diamagnetism on the SC side. SC phase nucleates upon warming in a cascade of discontinuous jumps in magnetic susceptibility $χ(T,H)$, whereas FM phase develops gradually as reported in detail in \cite{prozorov2008}. Here we further investigate enhanced diamagnetism. We find that when a magnetic field is applied along the magnetic easy axes, a region of enhanced diamagnetic screening is smaller than in the perpendicular orientation. A discussion of possible causes of this effect is provided.

Competition of multiband superconducting and magnetic order in ErNi2B2C observed by Andreev reflection

Point contacts (PC) Andreev reflection dV/dI spectra for the antiferromagnetic (T_N =6K) superconductor (Tc=11K) ErNi2B2C have been measured for the two main crystallographic directions. Observed retention of the Andreev reflection minima in dV/dI up to Tc directly points to unusual superconducting order parameter (OP) vanishing at Tc. Temperature dependence of OP was obtained from dV/dI using recent theory of Andreev reflection including pair-breaking effect. For the first time existence of a two superconducting OPs in ErNi2B2C is shown. A distinct decrease of both OPs as temperature is lowered below T_N is observed.

Intrinsic magnetic properties of NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ superconductor from local and global measurements

Magneto-optical imaging was used to study the local magnetization in polycrystalline NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (NFAOF). Individual crystallites up to $\sim200\times100\times30$ $μm^{3}$ in size could be mapped at various temperatures. The in-grain, persistent current density is about $j\sim10^{5}$ A/cm$^{2}$ and the magnetic relaxation rate in a remanent state peaks at about $T_{m}\sim38$ K. By comparison with with the total magnetization measured in a bar-shaped, dense, polycrystalline sample, we suggest that NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ is similar to a layered high-$T_{c}$, compound such as Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$ and exhibits a $3D\to2D$ crossover in the vortex structure. The 2D Ginzburg parameter is about $Gi^{2D}% \simeq10^{-2}$ implying electromagnetic anisotropy as large as $ε\sim1/30$. Below $T_{m}$, the static and dynamic behaviors are consistent with collective pinning and creep.

Exotic (anti)ferromagnetism in single crystals of Pr6Ni2Si3

The ternary intermetallic compound Pr6Ni2Si3, is a member of a structure series of compounds based on a triangular structure where the number of Pr atoms in the prism cross section can be systematically varied. Pr6Ni2Si3 contains two distinct Pr lattice sites which result in complex interactions between the magnetic ions. Extensive measurements of specific heat and magnetization on single crystal samples indicate that Pr6Ni2Si3 orders with both a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet component, with ordering temperatures of 39.6 K and ~ 32 K, respectively. The ferromagnetic component // c-axis is accompanied by a large hysteresis, and the antiferromagnetic component,_|_ c-axis is accompanied by a spin-flop-type transition. More detailed measurements, of the vector magnetization, indicate that the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic order appear independent of each other. These results not only clarify the behavior of Pr6Ni2Si3 itself, but also of the other members of the structure series, Pr5Ni2Si3 and Pr15Ni7Si10.

Variation of the magnetic ordering in GdT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T= Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh and Ir) and its correlation with the electronic structure of isostructural YT$_2$Zn$_{20}$

Magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed on the solution-grown, single crystals of six GdT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh and Ir) compounds, as well as their Y analogues. For the Gd compounds, the Fe column members manifest a ferromagnetic (FM) ground state (with an enhanced Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, for T = Fe and Ru), whereas the Co column members manifest an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state. Thermodynamic measurements on the YT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ revealed that the enhanced $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ for GdFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ and GdRu$_2$Zn$_{20}$ can be understood within the framework of Heisenberg moments embedded in a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid. Furthermore, electronic structure calculations indicate that this significant enhancement is due to large, close to the Stoner FM criterion, transition metal partial density of states at Fermi level, whereas the change of FM to AFM ordering is associated with filling of electronic states with two additional electrons per formula unit. The degree of this sensitivity is addressed by the studies of the pseudo-ternary compounds Gd(Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$)$_2$Zn$_{20}$ and Y(Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$)$_2$Zn$_{20}$ which clearly reveal the effect of 3d band filling on their magnetic properties.

Direct observation of the high magnetic field effect on the Jahn-Teller state in TbVO4

We report the first direct observation of the influence of high magnetic fields on the Jahn-Teller (JT) transition in TbVO4. Contrary to spectroscopic and magnetic methods, X-ray diffraction directly measures the JT distortion; the splitting between the (311)/(131) and (202)/(022) pairs of Bragg reflections is proportional to the order parameter. Our experimental results are compared to mean field calculations, taking into account all possible orientations of the grains relative to the applied field, and qualitative agreement is obtained.

Hydrostatic pressure study of pure and doped La1-xRxAgSb2 (R = Ce, Nd) charge-density-wave compounds

The intermetallic compound LaAgSb2 displays two charge-density-wave (CDW) transitions, which were detected with measurements of electrical resistivity (rho), magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray scattering; the upper transition takes place at T1 approx. 210 K, and it is accompanied by a large anomaly in rho(T), whereas the lower transition is marked by a much more subtle anomaly at T2 approx. 185 K. We studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure (P) on the formation of the upper CDW state in pure and doped La1-xRxAgSb2 (R = Ce, Nd) compounds, by means of measurements of rho(T) for P < 23 kbar. We found that the hydrostatic pressure, as well as the chemical pressure introduced by the partial substitution of the smaller Ce and Nd ions for La, result in the suppression of the CDW ground state, e.g. the reduction of the ordering temperature T1. The values of dT1/dP are approx. 2-4 times higher for the Ce-doped samples as compared to pure LaAgSb2, or even La0.75Nd0.25AgSb2 Nd-doped with a comparable T1 (P=0). This increased sensitivity to pressure may be due to increasing Ce- hybridization under pressure. The magnetic ordering temperature of the cerium-doped compounds is also reduced by pressure, and the high pressure behavior of the Ce-doped samples is dominated by Kondo impurity scattering.

Hydrostatic pressure study of single-crystalline UNi0.5Sb2

We studied single-crystals of the antiferromagnetic compound UNi0.5Sb2 (TN ~ 161 K) by means of measurements of magnetic susceptibility (chi), specific heat (Cp), and electrical resistivity (rho) at ambient pressure, and resistivity under hydrostatic pressures up to 20 kbar, in the temperature range from 1.9 to 300 K. The thermal coefficient of the electrical resistivity (drho/dT) changes drastically from positive below TN to negative above, reflecting the loss of spin-disorder scattering in the ordered phase. Two small features in the rho vs T data centered near 40 and 85 K correlate well in temperature with features in the magnetic susceptibility and are consistent with other data in the literature. These features are quite hysteretic in temperature, i.e., the difference between the warming and cooling cycles are about 10 and 6 K, respectively. The effect of pressure is to raise TN at the approximate rate of 0.76 K/kbar, while progressively suppressing the amplitude of the small features in rho vs T at lower temperatures and increasing the thermal hysteresis.

Pauli Paramagnetic Effects on Vortices in Superconducting TmNi2B2C

The magnetic field distribution around the vortices in TmNi2B2C in the paramagnetic phase was studied experimentally as well as theoretically. The vortex form factor, measured by small-angle neutron scattering, is found to be field independent up to 0.6 Hc2 followed by a sharp decrease at higher fields. The data are fitted well by solutions to the Eilenberger equations when paramagnetic effects due to the exchange interaction with the localized 4f Tm moments are included. The induced paramagnetic moments around the vortex cores act to maintain the field contrast probed by the form factor.
