Nature of superconducting state in the new phase in (TMTSF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$ under pressure

The unusual phase has been recently observed in the organic material (TMTSF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$, where superconductivity (SC) coexists with spin-density wave (SDW) in the pressure interval $p_{c1}<p<p_{c}$ below the first order transition into SC or normal metal phase. Assuming that the coexistence takes place on the microscopic scale, we consider the properties of the intermediate phase. We show that the new superconducting state inside SDW phase just above $p_{c1}$ must bear a triplet pairing.

Antiferromagnetism and hot spots in CeIn$_3$

Enormous mass enhancement at ''hot spots'' on the Fermi surface (FS) of CeIn$_3$ has been reported at strong magnetic field near its antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point [T. Ebihara et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 246401 (2004)] and ascribed to anomalous spin fluctuations at these spots. The ''hot spots'' lie at the positions on FS where in non-magnetic LaIn$_3$ the narrow necks are protruded. In paramagnetic phase CeIn$_3$ has similar spectrum. We show that in the presence of AFM ordering its FS undergoes a topological change at the onset of AFM order that truncates the necks at the ''hot spots'' for one of the branches. Applied field leads to the logarithmic divergence of the dHvA effective mass when the electron trajectory passes near or through the neck positions. This effect explains the observed dHvA mass enhancement at the ''hot spots'' and leads to interesting predictions concerning the spin-dependence of the effective electron mass. The (T,B)-phase diagram of CeIn$_3$, constructed in terms of the Landau functional, is in agreement with experiment.

A time lens for high resolution neutron time of flight spectrometers

We examine in analytic and numeric ways the imaging effects of temporal neutron lenses created by traveling magnetic fields. For fields of parabolic shape we derive the imaging equations, investigate the time-magnification, the evolution of the phase space element, the gain factor and the effect of finite beam size. The main aberration effects are calculated numerically. The system is technologically feasible and should convert neutron time of flight instruments from pinhole- to imaging configuration in time, thus enhancing intensity and/or time resolution. New fields of application for high resolution spectrometry may be opened.

The phase diagram and the structure of CDW state in high magnetic field in quasi-1D materials: mean-field approach

We develop the mean-field theory of a charge-density wave (CDW) state in magnetic field and study the properties of this state below the transition temperature. We show that the CDW state with shifted wave vector in high magnetic field (CDW$_x$ phase) has at least double harmonic modulation on the most part of the phase diagram. In the perfect nesting case the single harmonic CDW state with shifted wave vector exists only in a very narrow region near the tricritical point where the fluctuations are very strong. We show that the transition from CDW$_0$ to CDW$_x$ state below the critical temperature is accompanied by a jump of the CDW order parameter and of the wave vector rather than by their continuous increase. This implies a first order transition between these CDW states and explains the strong hysteresis accompanying this transition in many experiments. We examine how the phase diagram changes in the case of imperfect nesting.

Soliton phase near antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Q1D conductors

In the frameworks of a nesting model for Q1D organic conductor at the antiferromagnetic (SDW) quantum critical point the first-order transition separates metallic state from the soliton phase having the periodic domain structure. The low temperature phase diagram also displays the 2nd-order transition line between the soliton and the uniformly gapped SDW phases. The results agree with the phase diagram of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ near critical pressure [T. Vuletic et al., Eur. Phys. J. B 25, 319 (2002)]. Detection of the 2nd-order transition line is discussed. We comment on superconductivity at lowest temperature.

New Electronic Phase Transitions in α-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4

α-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4 is considered to be in the charge-density-wave (CDW) state below 8 K. We present new magnetoresistance data suggesting that the material undergoes a series of field-induced CDW (FICDW) transitions at pressures slightly exceeding the critical pressure Pc at which the zero-field CDW state is destroyed. Further, we argue that a novel kind of FICDW transitions, entirely determined by a superposition of the strong Pauli and quantizing orbital effects of magnetic field on the CDW wavevector, arises when the field is strongly tilted towards the conducting layers. These new transitions can take place even in the case of a relatively well nested Fermi surface. Finally we report on the superconducting (SC) state and its coexistence with the CDW in the title compound under quasi-hydrostatic pressure. Below Pc the material is most likely a heterogeneous SC/CDW mixture, with the SC phase persisting down to ambient pressure. The SC onset temperature appears to drastically increase upon entering the SC/CDW coexistence region.

Lift of degeneracy of Landau levels of 2D electron gas by point-like impurities

We study the density of states of two-dimensional electron gas in magnetic field with scattering on point-like impurities that are uniformly distributed along the sample. We show that the electron-impurity interaction completely lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels even at low impurity concentration. This statement is in contradiction with the previous results obtained in the unphysical approximation of two-dimensional impurities. There is a large region of the electron energy $ω$, counted from the Landau level, where the density of states $ρ(ω)$ is inversely proportional to $|ω|$ and proportional to the impurity concentration. Our results are applicable to different 2D electron systems as heterostructures, inversion layers and interfaces.

Orbital quantization in the high magnetic field state of a charge-density-wave system

A superposition of the Pauli and orbital coupling of a high magnetic field to charge carriers in a charge-density-wave (CDW) system is proposed to give rise to transitions between subphases with quantized values of the CDW wavevector. By contrast to the purely orbital field-induced density-wave effects which require a strongly imperfect nesting of the Fermi surface, the new transitions can occur even if the Fermi surface is well nested at zero field. We suggest that such transitions are observed in the organic metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ under a strongly tilted magnetic field.

Charged complexes at the surface of liquid helium

Charged clusters in liquid helium in an external electric field form a two-dimensional system below the helium surface. This 2D system undergoes a phase transition from a liquid to a Wigner crystal at rather high temperatures. Contrary to the electron Wigner crystal, the Wigner lattice of charged clusters can be detected directly.

Theory of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in quasi-two-dimensional metals

The Shubnikov - de Haas effect in quasi-two-dimensional normal metals is studied. The interlayer conductivity is calculated using the Kubo formula. The electron scattering on short-range is considered in the self-consistent Born approximation. The result obtained differs from that derived from the Boltzmann transport equation. This difference is shown to be a general feature of conductivity in magnetic field. A detailed description of the two new qualitative effects -- the field-dependent phase shift of beats and of the slow oscillations of conductivity is provided. The results obtained are applicable to strongly anisotropic organic metals and to other quasi-two-dimensional compounds.

Slow oscillations of magnetoresistance in quasi-two-dimensional metals

Slow oscillations of the interlayer magnetoresistance observed in the layered organic metal $β$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$IBr$_2$ are shown to originate from the slight warping of its Fermi surface rather than from independent small cyclotron orbits. Unlike the usual Shubnikov-de Haas effect, these oscillations are not affected by the temperature smearing of the Fermi distribution and can therefore become dominant at high enough temperatures. We suggest that the slow oscillations are a general feature of clean quasi-two-dimensional metals and discuss possible applications of the phenomenon.

Shubnikov-de Haas effect in quasi-two-dimensional compounds

The Shubnikov - de Haas effect in quasi-two-dimensional compounds is studied. The conductivity is calculated from the Kubo formula. Two effects -- the field-dependent phase shift of the beats and the slow oscillations of the conductivity are explained and calculated. The results are applicable to the strongly anisotropic organic metals and other layered compounds.

Anomalous beating phase of the oscillating interlayer magnetoresistance in layered metals

We analyze the beating behavior of the magnetic quantum oscillations in a layered metal under the conditions when the cyclotron energy $\hbar ω_c $ is comparable to the interlayer transfer energy $t$. We find that the positions of the beats in the interlayer resistance are considerably shifted from those in the magnetization oscillations, and predict that the shift is determined by the ratio $\hbar ω_c/t$. A comparative study of the Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effects in the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal $β$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$IBr$_2$ appears to be consistent with the theoretical prediction.

The de Haas - van Alphen effect in two-dimensional metals

The de Haas - van Alphen effect in two-dimensional (2D) metals is investigated at different conditions and with different shapes of Landau levels (LLs). The analytical calculations can be done when many LLs are occupied. We consider the cases of fixed particle number ($N=const$), fixed chemical potential ($μ=const$) and the intermediate situation of finite electron reservoir. The last case takes place in organic metals due to quasi-one-dimensional sheets of Fermi surface. We obtained the envelopes of magnetization oscillations in all these cases in the limit of low temperature and Dingle temperature, where the oscillations can not be approximated by few first terms in the harmonic expansion. The results are compared and shown to be substantially different for different shapes of LLs. The simple relation between the shape of LLs and the wave form of magnetization oscillations is found. It allows to obtain the density of states distribution at arbitrary magnetic field and spin-splitting using the measurement of the magnetization curve. The analytical formula for the magnetization at $μ=const$ and the Lorentzian shape of LLs at arbitrary temperature, Dingle temperature and spin splitting is obtained and used to examine the possibility of the diamagnetic phase transition in 2D metals.
