On an example of Mukai

In this note we use an example of Mukai to construct semistable bundles of rank 3 with 6 independent sections on a curve of genus 9 or 11 with Clifford index strictly less than the Clifford index of the curve. The example also allows us to show the non-emptiness of some Brill-Noether loci with negative expected dimension.

Stable bundles of rank 2 with 4 sections

This paper contains results on stable bundles of rank 2 with space of sections of dimension 4 on a smooth irreducible projective algebraic curve $C$. There is a known lower bound on the degree for the existence of such bundles; the main result of the paper is a geometric criterion for this bound to be attained. For a general curve $C$ of genus 10, we show that the bound cannot be attained, but that there exist Petri curves of this genus for which the bound is sharp. We interpret the main results for various curves and in terms of Clifford indices and coherent systems.

Further examples of stable bundles of rank 2 with 4 sections

In this paper we construct new examples of stable bundles of rank 2 of small degree with 4 sections on a smooth irreducible curve of maximal Clifford index. The corresponding Brill-Noether loci have negative expected dimension of arbitrarily large absolute value.

Generation of vector bundles computing Clifford indices

Clifford indices for semistable vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus at least 4 were defined in a previous paper of the authors. The present paper studies bundles which compute these Clifford indices. We show that under certain conditions on the curve all such bundles and their Serre duals are generated.

Lower bounds for Clifford indices in rank three

Clifford indices for semistable vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus at least 4 were defined in previous papers of the authors. In the present paper, we establish lower bounds for the Clifford indices for rank 3 bundles. As a consequence we show that, on smooth plane curves of degree at least 10, there exist non-generated bundles of rank 3 computing one of the Clifford indices.

Clifford indices for vector bundles on curves

For smooth projective curves the Clifford index is an important invariant which provides a bound for the dimension of the space of sections of a line bundle. This is the first step in distinguishing curves of the same genus. In this paper we generalise this to introduce Clifford indices for semistable vector bundles on curves. We study these invariants, giving some basic properties and carrying out some computations for small ranks and for general and some special curves. For curves whose classical Clifford index is two, we compute all values of our new Clifford indices.

Hodge polynomials and birational types of moduli spaces of coherent systems on elliptic curves

In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. Moreover we prove that certain moduli spaces of coherent systems are isomorphic. This last result uses the Fourier-Mukai transform of coherent systems introduced by Hernández Ruiperez and Tejero Prieto.

Stability of projective Poincare and Picard bundles

Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge3$ defined over the complex numbers and let ${\mathcal M}_ξ$ denote the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $n$ and determinant $ξ$, where $ξ$ is a fixed line bundle of degree $d$. If $n$ and $d$ have a common divisor, there is no universal vector bundle on $X\times {\mathcal M}_ξ$. We prove that there is a projective bundle on $X\times {\mathcal M}_ξ$ with the property that its restriction to $X\times\{E\}$ is isomorphic to $P(E)$ for all $E\in\mathcal{M}_ξ$ and that this bundle (called the projective Poincaré bundle) is stable with respect to any polarization; moreover its restriction to $\{x\}\times\mathcal{M}_ξ$ is also stable for any $x\in X$. We prove also stability results for bundles induced from the projective Poincaré bundle by homomorphisms $\text{PGL}(n)\to H$ for any reductive $H$. We show further that there is a projective Picard bundle on a certain open subset $\mathcal{M}'$ of $\mathcal{M}_ξ$ for any $d>n(g-1)$ and that this bundle is also stable. We obtain new results on the stability of the Picard bundle even when $n$ and $d$ are coprime.

On coherent systems of type (n,d,n+1) on Petri curves

We study coherent systems of type $(n,d,n+1)$ on a Petri curve $X$ of genus $g\ge2$. We describe the geometry of the moduli space of such coherent systems for large values of the parameter $α$. We determine the top critical value of $α$ and show that the corresponding ``flip'' has positive codimension. We investigate also the non-emptiness of the moduli space for smaller values of $α$, proving in many cases that the condition for non-emptiness is the same as for large $α$. We give some detailed results for $g\le5$ and applications to higher rank Brill-Noether theory and the stability of kernels of evaluation maps, thus proving Butler's conjecture in some cases in which it was not previously known.

Moduli spaces of coherent systems of small slope on algebraic curves

Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g\ge2$. A coherent system on $C$ consists of a pair $(E,V)$, where $E$ is an algebraic vector bundle over $C$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ and $V$ is a subspace of dimension $k$ of the space of sections of $E$. The stability of the coherent system depends on a parameter $α$. We study the geometry of the moduli space of coherent systems for $0<d\le2n$. We show that these spaces are irreducible whenever they are non-empty and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for non-emptiness.

Coherent systems of genus 0, III: Computation of flips for k=1

In this paper we continue the investigation of coherent systems of type $(n,d,k)$ on the projective line which are stable with respect to some value of a parameter $α$. We consider the case $k=1$ and study the variation of the moduli spaces with $α$. We determine inductively the first and last moduli spaces and the flip loci, and give an explicit description for ranks 2 and 3. We also determine the Hodge polynomials explicitly for ranks 2 and 3 and in certain cases for arbitrary rank.

Coherent systems of genus 0 II: Existence results for k\ge3

In this paper we continue the investigation of coherent systems of type (n,d,k) on the projective line which are stable with respect to some value of the parameter α. We work mainly with k<n and obtain existence results for arbitrary k in certain cases, together with complete results for k=3. Our methods involve the use of the "flips" which occur at critical values of the parameter.

Universal Families on moduli spaces of principal bundles on curves

Let $H$ be a connected semisimple linear algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$ and $X$ a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least three. Let ${\mathcal M}'_X(H)$ be the moduli space parametrising all topologically trivial stable principal $H$-bundles over $X$ whose automorphism group coincides with the centre of $H$. It is a Zariski open dense subset of the moduli space of stable principal $H$-bundles. We prove that there is a universal principal $H$-bundle over $X\times {\mathcal M}'_X(H)$ if and only if $H$ is an adjoint group (that is, the centre of $H$ is trivial).

Coherent Systems on Elliptic curves

In this paper we consider coherent systems $(E,V)$ on an elliptic curve which are stable with respect to some value of a parameter $α$. We show that the corresponding moduli spaces, if non-empty, are smooth and irreducible of the expected dimenson. Moreover we give precise conditions for non-emptiness of the moduli spaces. Finally we study the variation of the moduli spaces with $α$.

On Poincare bundles of vector bundles on curves

Let $M$ denote the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ and fixed determinant of degree coprime to $n$ on a non-singular projective curve $X$ of genus $g \geq 2$. Denote by $\cU$ a universal bundle on $X \times M$. We show that, for $x,y \in X, x \neq y$, the restrictions $\cU|\{x\} \times M$ and $\cU|\{y\} \times M$ are stable and non-isomorphic when considered as bundles on $X$.

Coherent systems of genus 0

In this paper we begin the classification of coherent systems $(E,V)$ on the projective line which are stable with respect to some value of a parameter $α$. In particular we show that the moduli spaces, if non-empty, are always smooth and irreducible of the expected dimension. We obtain necessary conditions for non-emptiness and, when $\dim V=1$ or 2, we determine these conditions precisely. We also obtain partial results in some other cases.
