On Clifford's theorem for rank-3 bundles

In this paper we obtain bounds on $h^0(E)$ where $E$ is a semistable bundle of rank 3 over a smooth irreducible projective curve $X$ of genus $g \geq 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. These bounds are expressed in terms of the degrees of stability $s_1(E), s_2(E)$. We show also that in some cases the bounds are best possible. These results extend recent work of J. Cilleruelo and I. Sols for bundles of rank 2.

Deformations of the generalised Picard bundle

Let X be a non-singular algebraic curve of genus at least 3 and let M denote the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank n and fixed determinant of degree d with n and d coprime. For any semistable bundle E over X, we can pull E back to XxM, tensor with a universal bundle and take the direct image W(E) on M. If the degree of E is sufficiently large, this direct image is locally free and we call it a generalised Picard bundle. In this paper we prove an inversion formula allowing us to recover E from W(E) and compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of W(E). We also identify a family of deformations which is locally complete and frequently globally complete as well. The paper as a whole is a generalisation of results of Kempf and Mukai on Picard bundles over the Jacobian of X.

Deformations of the Picard Bundle

Let X be a nonsingular projective algebraic curve of genus g\ge3. We consider the moduli space M of stable bundles of fixed determinant with rank n and degree d coprime and d>n(2g-2). There is a universal bundle on XxM and we consider the direct image of this bundle on M. With the given restriction on d, this is a bundle W called the Picard bundle. Our main object in this paper is to compute the infinitesimal deformations of W. We show also that W possesses a moduli space and that the connected component of this moduli space containing W is isomorphic as a polarised variety to the Jacobian of X.

Maximal Subbundles and Gromov-Witten Invariants

Let $C$ be a nonsingular irreducible projective curve of genus $g\ge2$ defined over the complex numbers. Suppose that $1\le n'\le n-1$ and $n'd-nd'=n'(n-n')(g-1)$. It is known that, for the general vector bundle $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$, the maximal degree of a subbundle of $E$ of rank $n'$ is $d'$ and that there are finitely many such subbundles. We obtain a formula for the number of these maximal subbundles when $(n',d')=1$. For $g=2$, $n'=2$, we evaluate this formula explicitly. The numbers computed here are Gromov-Witten invariants in the sense of a recent paper of Ch. Okonek and A. Teleman (to appear in Commun. Math. Phys.) and our results answer a question raised in that paper. In this revised version some references are added.

Nonemptiness of Brill-Noether loci

Let $X$ be a non-singular algebraic curve of genus $g$. We prove that the Brill-Noether locus $\bns $ is non-empty if $d= nd' +d'' $ with $0< d'' <2n$, $1\le s\le g$, $d'\geq (s-1)(s+g)/s $, $n\leq d''+(n-k)g$, $(d'',k)\ne(n,n)$. These results hold for an arbitrary curve of genus $\ge 2$, and allow us to construct a region in the associated ``Brill-Noether $\pa$-map'' of points for which the Brill-Noether loci are non-empty. Even for the generic case, the region so constructed extends beyond that defined by the so-called ``Teixidor parallelograms.'' For hyperelliptic curves, the same methods give more extensive and precise results.

Geography of Brill-Noether loci for small slopes

Let $X$ be a non-singular projective curve of genus $g\ge2$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let $\mo$ denote the moduli space of stable bundles of rank $n$ and degree $d$ on $X$ and $\wn $ the Brill-Noether loci in $\mo .$ We prove that, if $0\leq d \leq n $ and $\wn $ is non-empty, then it is irreducible of the expected dimension and smooth outside $\wnn$. We prove further that in this range $\wn$ is non-empty if and only if $d>0$, $n\leq d+(n-k)g$ and $(n,d,k) \not= (n,n,n)$. We also prove irreducibility and non-emptiness for the semistable Brill-Noether loci.

Stability of the Poincaré bundle

Let $C$ be a nonsingular projective curve of genus $g\ge2$ defined over the complex numbers, and let $M_ξ$ denote the moduli space of stable bundles of rank $n$ and determinant $ξ$ on $C$, where $ξ$ is a line bundle of degree $d$ on $C$ and $n$ and $d$ are coprime. It is shown that the universal bundle $\cu_ξ$ on $C\times M_ξ$ is stable with respect to any polarisation on $C\times M_ξ$. It is shown further that the connected component of the moduli space of $\cu_ξ$ containing $\cu_ξ$ is isomorphic to the Jacobian of $C$.

Algebraic cohomology of the moduli space of rank 2 vector bundles on a curve

Let $\MC$ be the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank 2 and fixed determinant of odd degree, over a smooth projective curve $C$. This paper identifies the algebraic cohomology ring $\HA^*(\MC)$, i.e. the subring of the rational cohomology ring $H^*(\MC;\QQ)$ spanned by the fundamental classes of algebraic cycles, in terms of the algebraic cohomology ring of the Jacobian $\JC$.

On the cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank 2 vector bundles on a curve

Let $\MS_g$ be the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank 2 and fixed determinant of odd degree over a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g$. This paper proves various properties of the rational cohomology ring $H^*(\MS_g)$. It is shown that the first relation in genus $g$ between the standard generators satisfies a recurrence relation in $g$ and that the invariant subring for the mapping class group is a complete intersection ring. (These two results have been obtained independently by Zagier, Baranovsky and Siebert & Tian.) A Gröbner basis is found for the ideal of invariant relations. A structural formula for $H^*(\MS_g)$ (originally conjectured by Mumford) is verified and a natural monomial basis is given.

Moduli of Brill-Noether pairs on algebraic curves

We construct coarse moduli spaces for `Brill-Noether pairs'. Such a pair consists of a torsion-free sheaf $E$ over an algebraic curve $X$ and a vector subspace $Λ$ of its space of sections $H^0(E)$. The construction works for an arbitrary singular curve $X$ of pure dimension and for all values of the positive rational parameter $α$ occurring in the stability condition.
