Gap opening in two-dimensional periodic systems

We present a new method of gap control in two-dimensional periodic systems with the perturbation consisting of a second-order differential operator and a family of narrow potential `walls' separating the period cells in on direction. We show that under appropriate assumptions one can open gaps around points determined by dispersion curves of the associated `waveguide' system, in general any finite number of them, and to control their widths in terms of the perturbation parameter. Moreover, the distinctive feature of those gaps is that their edge values are attained by the corresponding band functions at internal points of the Brillouin zone.

On the bound states of magnetic Laplacians on wedges

This paper is mainly inspired by the conjecture about the existence of bound states for magnetic Neumann Laplacians on planar wedges of any aperture $\phi\in (0,\pi)$. So far, a proof was only obtained for apertures $\phi\lesssim 0.511\pi$. The conviction in the validity of this conjecture for apertures $\phi\gtrsim 0.511\pi$ mainly relied on numerical computations. In this paper we succeed to prove the existence of bound states for any aperture $\phi \lesssim 0.583\pi$ using a variational argument with suitably chosen test functions. Employing some more involved test functions and combining a variational argument with computer-assistance, we extend this interval up to any aperture $\phi \lesssim 0.595\pi$. Moreover, we analyse the same question for closely related problems concerning magnetic Robin Laplacians on wedges and for magnetic Schr\"odinger operators in the plane with $\delta$-interactions supported on broken lines.

On eigenvalue asymptotics for strong delta-interactions supported by surfaces with boundaries

Let $S\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ be a $C^4$-smooth relatively compact orientable surface with a sufficiently regular boundary. For $\beta\in\mathbb{R}_+$, let $E_j(\beta)$ denote the $j$th negative eigenvalue of the operator associated with the quadratic form \[ H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)\ni u\mapsto \iiint_{\mathbb{R}^3} |\nabla u|^2dx -\beta \iint_S |u|^2d\sigma, \] where $\sigma$ is the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure on $S$. We show that for each fixed $j$ one has the asymptotic expansion \[ E_j(\beta)=-\dfrac{\beta^2}{4}+\mu^D_j+ o(1) \;\text{ as }\; \beta\to+\infty\,, \] where $\mu_j^D$ is the $j$th eigenvalue of the operator $-\Delta_S+K-M^2$ on $L^2(S)$, in which $K$ and $M$ are the Gauss and mean curvatures, respectively, and $-\Delta_S$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator with the Dirichlet condition at the boundary of $S$. If, in addition, the boundary of $S$ is $C^2$-smooth, then the remainder estimate can be improved to ${\mathcal O}(\beta^{-1}\log\beta)$.

Tunneling resonances in systems without a classical trapping

In this paper we analyze a free quantum particle in a straight Dirichlet waveguide which has at its axis two Dirichlet barriers of lengths $\ell_\pm$ separated by a window of length 2a. It is known that if the barriers are semiinfinite, i.e. we have two adjacent waveguides coupled laterally through the boundary window, the system has for any a>0 a finite number of eigenvalues below the essential spectrum threshold. Here we demonstrate that for large but finite $\ell_\pm$ the system has resonances which converge to the said eigenvalues as $\ell_\pm\to\infty$, and derive the leading term in the corresponding asymptotic expansion.

On geometric perturbations of critical Schrödinger operators with a surface interaction

We study singular Schrodinger operators with an attractive interaction supported by a closed smooth surface A in R^3 and analyze their behavior in the vicinity of the critical situation where such an operator has empty discrete spectrum and a threshold resonance. In particular, we show that if A is a sphere and the critical coupling is constant over it, any sufficiently small smooth area preserving radial deformation gives rise to isolated eigenvalues. On the other hand, the discrete spectrum may be empty for general deformations. We also derive a related inequality for capacities associated with such surfaces.

Interlaced dense point and absolutely continuous spectra for Hamiltonians with concentric-shell singular interactions

We analyze the spectrum of the generalized Schrodinger operator in $L^2(R^\nu) \nu \geq 2$, with a general local, rotationally invariant singular interaction supported by an infinite family of concentric, equidistantly spaced spheres. It is shown that the essential spectrum consists of interlaced segments of the dense point and absolutely continuous character, and that the relation of their lengths at high energies depends on the choice of the interaction parameters; generically the p.p. component is asymptotically dominant. We also show that for $\nu=2$ there is an infinite family of eigenvalues below the lowest band.

Distant perturbation asymptotics in window-coupled waveguides. I. The non-threshold case

We consider a pair of adjacent quantum waveguides, in general of different widths, coupled laterally by a pair of windows in the common boundary, not necessarily of the same length, at a fixed distance. The Hamiltonian is the respective Dirichlet Laplacian. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the discrete spectrum as the window distance tends to infinity for the generic case, i.e. for eigenvalues of the corresponding one-window problems separated from the threshold.

A lower bound to the spectral threshold in curved tubes

We consider the Laplacian in curved tubes of arbitrary cross-section rotating together with the Frenet frame along curves in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on the cylindrical surface and Neumann conditions at the ends of the tube. We prove that the spectral threshold of the Laplacian is estimated from below by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a torus determined by the geometry of the tube.

Exponential splitting of bound states in a waveguide with a pair of distant windows

We consider Laplacian in a straight planar strip with Dirichlet boundary which has two Neumann ``windows'' of the same length the centers of which are $2l$ apart, and study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum as $l\to\infty$. It is shown that there are pairs of eigenvalues around each isolated eigenvalue of a single-window strip and their distances vanish exponentially in the limit $l\to\infty$. We derive an asymptotic expansion also in the case where a single window gives rise to a threshold resonance which the presence of the other window turns into a single isolated eigenvalue.

Leaky quantum graphs: approximations by point interaction Hamiltonians

We prove an approximation result showing how operators of the type $-\Delta -\gamma \delta (x-\Gamma)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$, where $\Gamma$ is a graph, can be modeled in the strong resolvent sense by point-interaction Hamiltonians with an appropriate arrangement of the $\delta$ potentials. The result is illustrated on finding the spectral properties in cases when $\Gamma$ is a ring or a star. Furthermore, we use this method to indicate that scattering on an infinite curve $\Gamma$ which is locally close to a loop shape or has multiple bends may exhibit resonances due to quantum tunneling or repeated reflections.

Eigenvalue asymptotics for the Schr\"odinger operator with a $\delta$-interaction on a punctured surface

Given $n\geq 2$, we put $r=\min\{i\in\mathbb{N}; i>n/2 \}$. Let $\Sigma$ be acompact, $C^{r}$-smooth surface in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ which contains the origin. Let further $\{S_{\epsilon}\}_{0\le\epsilon<\eta}$ be a family of measurable subsets of $\Sigma$ such that $\sup_{x\in S_{\epsilon}}|x|= {\mathcal O}(\epsilon)$ as $\epsilon\to 0$. We derive an asymptotic expansion for the discrete spectrum of the Schr{\"o}dinger operator $-\Delta -\beta\delta(\cdot-\Sigma \setminus S_{\epsilon})$ in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, where $\beta$ is a positive constant, as $\epsilon\to 0$. An analogous result is given also for geometrically induced bound states due to a $\delta$ interaction supported by an infinite planar curve.

Strong-coupling asymptotic expansion for Schr\"odinger operators with a singular interaction supported by a curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We investigate a class of generalized Schr\"{o}dinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with a singular interaction supported by a smooth curve $\Gamma$. We find a strong-coupling asymptotic expansion of the discrete spectrum in case when $\Gamma$ is a loop or an infinite bent curve which is asymptotically straight. It is given in terms of an auxiliary one-dimensional Schr\"{o}dinger operator with a potential determined by the curvature of $\Gamma$. In the same way we obtain an asymptotics of spectral bands for a periodic curve. In particular, the spectrum is shown to have open gaps in this case if $\Gamma$ is not a straight line and the singular interaction is strong enough.

Spectra of soft ring graphs

We discuss of a ring-shaped soft quantum wire modeled by $\delta$ interaction supported by the ring of a generally nonconstant coupling strength. We derive condition which determines the discrete spectrum of such systems, and analyze the dependence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on the coupling and ring geometry. In particular, we illustrate that a random component in the coupling leads to a localization. The discrete spectrum is investigated also in the situation when the ring is placed into a homogeneous magnetic field or threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux and the system exhibits persistent currents.

Product formula related to quantum Zeno dynamics

We prove a product formula which involves the unitary group generated by a semibounded self-adjoint operator and an orthogonal projection $P$ on a separable Hilbert space $\HH$, with the convergence in $L^2_\mathrm{loc}(\mathbb{R};\HH)$. It gives a partial answer to the question about existence of the limit which describes quantum Zeno dynamics in the subspace \hbox{$\mathrm{Ran} P$}. The convergence in $\HH$ is demonstrated in the case of a finite-dimensional $P$. The main result is illustrated in the example where the projection corresponds to a domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and the unitary group is the free Schr\"odinger evolution.

Topologically non-trivial quantum layers

Given a complete non-compact surface embedded in R^3, we consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a layer of constant width about the surface. Using an intrinsic approach to the layer geometry, we generalise the spectral results of an original paper by Duclos et al. to the situation when the surface does not possess poles. This enables us to consider topologically more complicated layers and state new spectral results. In particular, we are interested in layers built over surfaces with handles or several cylindrically symmetric ends. We also discuss more general regions obtained by compact deformations of certain layers.

Magnetic layers with periodic point perturbations

We study spectral properties of a spinless quantum particle confined to an infinite planar layer with hard walls which interacts with a periodic lattice of point perturbations and a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the layer. It is supposed that the lattice cell contains a finite number of impurities and the flux through the cell is rational. Using the Landau-Zak transformation, we convert the problem into investigation of the corresponding fiber operators which is performed by means of Krein's formula. This yields an explicit description of the spectral bands which may be absolutely continuous or degenerate, depending on the parameters of the model.

Large gaps in point-coupled periodic systems of manifolds

We study a free quantum motion on periodically structured manifolds composed of elementary two-dimensional "cells" connected either by linear segments or through points where the two cells touch. The general theory is illustrated with numerous examples in which the elementary components are spherical surfaces arranged into chains in a straight or zigzag way, or two-dimensional square-lattice "carpets". We show that the spectra of such systems have an infinite number of gaps and that the latter dominate the spectrum at high energies.
