Geometric coupling thresholds in a two-dimensional strip

We consider the Laplacian in a strip $\mathbb{R}\times (0,d)$ with the boundary condition which is Dirichlet except at the segment of a length $2a$ of one of the boundaries where it is switched to Neumann. This operator is known to have a non-empty and simple discrete spectrum for any $a>0$. There is a sequence $0<a_1<a_2<...$ of critical values at which new eigenvalues emerge from the continuum when the Neumann window expands. We find the asymptotic behavior of these eigenvalues around the thresholds showing that the gap is in the leading order proportional to $(a-a_n)^2$ with an explicit coefficient expressed in terms of the corresponding threshold-energy resonance eigenfunction.

Magnetic transport in a straight parabolic channel

We study a charged two-dimensional particle confined to a straight parabolic-potential channel and exposed to a homogeneous magnetic field under influence of a potential perturbation $W$. If $W$ is bounded and periodic along the channel, a perturbative argument yields the absolute continuity of the bottom of the spectrum. We show it can have any finite number of open gaps provided the confining potential is sufficiently strong. However, if $W$ depends on the periodic variable only, we prove by Thomas argument that the whole spectrum is absolutely continuous, irrespectively of the size of the perturbation. On the other hand, if $W$ is small and satisfies a weak localization condition in the the longitudinal direction, we prove by Mourre method that a part of the absolutely continuous spectrum persists.

Bound states in weakly deformed strips and layers

We consider Dirichlet Laplacians on straight strips in R^2 or layers in R^3 with a weak local deformation. First we generalize a result of Bulla et al. to the three-dimensional situation showing that weakly coupled bound states exist if the volume change induced by the deformation is positive; we also derive the leading order of the weak-coupling asymptotics. With the knowledge of the eigenvalue analytic properties, we demonstrate then an alternative method which makes it possible to evaluate the next term in the asymptotic expansion for both the strips and layers. It gives, in particular, a criterion for the bound-state existence in the critical case when the added volume is zero.

A model of interband radiative transitions

We consider a simple model which is a caricature of a crystal interacting with a radiation field. The model has two bands of continuous spectrum and the particle can pass from the upper one to the lower by radiating a photon, the coupling between the excited and deexcited states being of a Friedrichs type. Under suitable regularity and analyticity assumptions we find the continued resolvent and show that for weak enough coupling it has a curve-type singularity in the lower halfplane which is a deformation of the upper-band spectral cut. We then find a formula for the decay amplitude and show that for a fixed energy it is approximately exponential at intermediate times, while the tail has a power-like behaviour.

Geometric phase related to point-interaction transport on a magnetic Lobachevsky plane

We consider a charged quantum particle living in the Lobachevsky plane and interacting with a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the plane and a point interaction which is transported adiabatically along a closed loop C in the plane. We show that the bound-state eigenfunction acquires at that the Berry phase equal to 2πtimes the number of the flux quanta through the area encircled by C.

Two-component model of a spin-polarized transport

Effect of the spin-involved interaction of electrons with impurity atoms or defects to the transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas is described by using a simplifying two-component model. Components representing spin-up and spin-down states are supposed to be coupled at a discrete set of points within a conduction channel. The used limit of the short-range interaction allows to solve the relevant scattering problem exactly. By varying the model parameters different transport regimes of two-terminal devices with ferromagnetic contacts can be described. In a quasi-ballistic regime the resulting difference between conductances for the parallel and antiparallel orientation of the contact magnetization changes its sign as a function of the length of the conduction channel if appropriate model parameters are chosen. The effect is in agreement with recent experimental observations.

Some properties of the one-dimensional generalized point interactions (a torso)

This text is a part of an unfinished project which deals with the generalized point interaction (GPI) in one dimension. We employ two natural parametrizations, which are known but have not attracted much attention, to express the resolvent of the GPI Hamiltonian as well as its spectral and scattering properties. It is also shown that the GPI yields one of the simplest models in which a non-trivial Berry phase is exhibited. Furthermore, the generalized Kronig-Penney model corresponding to the GPI is discussed. We show that there are three different types of the high-energy behaviour for the corresponding band spectrum.

Locally curved quantum layers

We consider a quantum particle constrained to a curved layer of a constant width built over an infinite smooth surface. We suppose that the latter is a locally deformed plane and that the layer has the hard-wall boundary. Under this assumptions we prove that the particle Hamiltonian possesses geometrically induced bound states.

Quantum waveguides with a lateral semitransparent barrier: spectral and scattering properties

We consider a quantum particle in a waveguide which consists of an infinite straight Dirichlet strip divided by a thin semitransparent barrier on a line parallel to the walls which is modeled by a $δ$ potential. We show that if the coupling strength of the latter is modified locally, i.e. it reaches the same asymptotic value in both directions along the line, there is always a bound state below the bottom of the essential spectrum provided the effective coupling function is attractive in the mean. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, as well as the scattering matrix for energies above the threshold, are found numerically by the mode-matching technique. In particular, we discuss the rate at which the ground-state energy emerges from the continuum and properties of the nodal lines. Finally, we investigate a system with a modified geometry: an infinite cylindrical surface threaded by a homogeneous magnetic field parallel to the cylinder axis. The motion on the cylinder is again constrained by a semitransparent barrier imposed on a ``seam'' parallel to the axis.

Anomalous electron trapping by localized magnetic fields

We consider an electron with an anomalous magnetic moment g>2 confined to a plane and interacting with a nonzero magnetic field B perpendicular to the plane. We show that if B has compact support and the magnetic flux in the natural units is F\ge 0, the corresponding Pauli Hamiltonian has at least 1+[F] bound states, without making any assumptions about the field profile. Furthermore, in the zero-flux case there is a pair of bound states with opposite spin orientations. Using a Birman-Schwinger technique, we extend the last claim to a weak rotationally symmetric field with B(r) = O(r^{-2-δ}) correcting thus a recent result. Finally, we show that under mild regularity assumptions the existence can be proved for non-symmetric fields with tails as well.

Anomalous electron trapping by magnetic flux tubes and electric current vortices

We consider an electron with an anomalous magnetic moment, g>2, confined to a plane and interacting with a nonhomogeneous magnetic field B, and investigate the corresponding Pauli Hamiltonian. We prove a lower bound on the number of bound states for the case when B is of a compact support and the related flux is $N+ε, ε\in(0,1]$. In particular, there are at least N+1 bound states if B does not change sign. We also consider the situation where the magnetic field is due to a localized rotationally symmetric electric current vortex in the plane. In this case the flux is zero; there is a pair of bound states for a weak coupling, and higher orbital-momentum "spin-down" states appearing as the current strength increases.

Electron trapping by a current vortex

We investigate an electron in the plane interacting with the magnetic field due to an electric current forming a localized rotationally symmetric vortex. We show that independently of the vortex profile an electron with spin antiparallel to the magnetic field can be trapped if the vortex current is strong enough. In addition, the electron scattering on the vortex exhibits resonances for any spin orientation. On the other hand, in distinction to models with a localized flux tube the present situation exhibits no bound states for weak vortices.

A Mechanism of Porous-Silicon Luminescence

We discuss the discrete spectrum induced by bulges on threadlike mesoscopic objects, using two models, a continuous hard-wall waveguide and a discrete tight-binding model with two sorts of atomic orbitals. We show that elongated bulges induce numerous quasibound states. In the discrete model we also evaluate the probability of transition between the localized states and extended ones of the "valence" band. We suggest this as a mechanism governing the porous-silicon luminescence. In addition, the model reproduces the dominance of nonradiative transitions, blue shift for finer textures and luminescence suppression at low temperatures.

Topologically induced vortex magnetance of a quantum device

We consider resonant vortices around nodal points of the wavefunction in electron transport through a mesoscopic device. With a suitable choice of the device geometry, the dominating role is played by single vortices of a preferred orientation. To characterize strength of the resulting magnetic moment we have introduced a magnetance, the quantity defined in analogy with the device conductance. Its basic properties and possible experimental detection are discussed.

Resonance statistics in a microwave cavity with a thin antenna

We propose a model for scattering in a flat resonator with a thin antenna. The results are applied to rectangular microwave cavities. We compute the resonance spacing distribution and show that it agrees well with experimental data provided the antenna radius is much smaller than wavelengths of the resonance wavefunctions.

Point interactions in a strip

We study the behavior of a quantum particle confined to a hard--wall strip of a constant width in which there is a finite number $ N $ of point perturbations. Constructing the resolvent of the corresponding Hamiltonian by means of Krein's formula, we analyze its spectral and scattering properties. The bound state--problem is analogous to that of point interactions in the plane: since a two--dimensional point interaction is never repulsive, there are $ m $ discrete eigenvalues, $ 1\le m\le N $, the lowest of which is nondegenerate. On the other hand, due to the presence of the boundary the point interactions give rise to infinite series of resonances; if the coupling is weak they approach the thresholds of higher transverse modes. We derive also spectral and scattering properties for point perturbations in several related models: a cylindrical surface, both of a finite and infinite heigth, threaded by a magnetic flux, and a straight strip which supports a potential independent of the transverse coordinate. As for strips with an infinite number of point perturbations, we restrict ourselves to the situation when the latter are arranged periodically; we show that in distinction to the case of a point--perturbation array in the plane, the spectrum may exhibit any finite number of gaps. Finally, we study numerically conductance fluctuations in case of random point perturbations.
