Magnetically Charged Superdomain Walls In Square Artificial Spin Ice

We report direct evidence that magnetically charged superdomain walls form spontaneously in two dimensional square artificial spin ice nanostructures in response to external magnetic fields. These extended magnetic defects were revealed by the development of internal structure, which varies as a function of applied magnetic field, within the Bragg peaks of resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering patterns. Magnetically charged superdomain walls extend over tens of lattice sites and do not necessarily align with the applied field. Our results illustrate a novel approach to detect hierarchical magnetic structures within spin textures.

Synthesizing Skyrmion Molecules in Fe-Gd Thin Films

We show that properly engineered amorphous Fe-Gd alloy thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy exhibit room-temperature skyrmion molecules, or a pair of like-polarity, opposite-helicity skyrmions. Magnetic mirror symmetry planes present in the stripe phase, instead of chiral exchange, determine the internal skyrmion structure and the net achirality of the skyrmion phase. Our study shows that stripe domain engineering in amorphous alloy thin films may enable the creation of skyrmion phases with technologically desirable properties.

Research Proposal for an Experiment to Search for the Decay μ -> eee

We propose an experiment (Mu3e) to search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu+ -> e+e-e+. We aim for an ultimate sensitivity of one in 10^16 mu-decays, four orders of magnitude better than previous searches. This sensitivity is made possible by exploiting modern silicon pixel detectors providing high spatial resolution and hodoscopes using scintillating fibres and tiles providing precise timing information at high particle rates.

DEPFET active pixel detectors for a future linear $e^+e^-$ collider

The DEPFET collaboration develops highly granular, ultra-transparent active pixel detectors for high-performance vertex reconstruction at future collider experiments. The characterization of detector prototypes has proven that the key principle, the integration of a first amplification stage in a detector-grade sensor material, can provide a comfortable signal to noise ratio of over 40 for a sensor thickness of 50-75 $\mathrm{\mathbf{μm}}$. ASICs have been designed and produced to operate a DEPFET pixel detector with the required read-out speed. A complete detector concept is being developed, including solutions for mechanical support, cooling and services. In this paper the status of DEPFET R & D project is reviewed in the light of the requirements of the vertex detector at a future linear $\mathbf{e^+ e^-}$ collider.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.

Single magnetic chirality in the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$

We have performed an extensive study of single-crystals of the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ by means of a combination of single-crystal neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Our investigation did not detect significant deviations at low temperatures from space group R32 concerning the chemical structure. With respect to magnetic ordering our combined results demonstrate that in the commensurate magnetic phase below T$_N$~30 K all three magnetic Fe moments and the magnetic Nd moment are aligned ferromagnetically in the basal hexagonal plane but align antiferromagnetically between adjacent planes. The phase transition to the low-temperature incommensurate magnetic structure observed at T$_{IC}$~13.5 K appears to be continuous. By means of polarized neutron studies it could be shown that in the incommensurate magnetic phase the magnetic structure of NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ is transformed into a long-period antiferromagnetic helix with single chirality. Close to the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition third-order harmonics were observed which in addition indicate the formation of magnetic solitons.

Imaging of lateral spin valves with soft X-ray microscopy

We investigated Co/Cu lateral spin valves by means of high-resolution transmission soft x-ray microscopy with magnetic contrast that utilizes x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). No magnetic XMCD contrast was observed at the Cu L$_3$ absorption edge, which should directly image the spin accumulation in Cu. Although electrical transport measurements in a non-local geometry clearly detected the spin accumulation in Cu, which remained unchanged during illumination with circular polarized x-rays at the Co and Cu L$_3$ absorption edges.

Noncentrosymmetric Commensurate Magnetic Ordering of Multiferroic ErMn2O5

The non-centrosymmetric magnetic structure of ErMn$_2$O$_5$ has been shown to be very similar to that of HoMn$_2$O$_5$ (Vecchini {\it et al.}, 2008 Phys. Rev. B {\bf 77} 134434). The magnetic modulation at 25 K has propagation vector $\vec k$=(1/2,0,1/4) and the symmetry imposes very few constraints on the magnetic configurations allowed. Only by combining the results of bulk magnetisation measurements, powder and single crystal neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarization analysis was it possible to distinguish clearly between different models. The susceptibility measurements show that the erbium magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the c-axis indicating strong single-ion anisotropy. Spherical neutron polarimetry demonstrates the presence of two unequally populated chirality domains in ErMn$_2$O$_5$ single crystals. X-ray diffraction measurements on an ErMn$_2$O$_5$ powder using synchrotron radiation show that the buckling angles of the Mn-O-Mn bond change below the transition to the ferroelectric phase.

Large-wavelength instabilities in free-surface Hartmann flow at low magnetic Prandtl numbers

We study the linear stability of the flow of a viscous electrically conducting capillary fluid on a planar fixed plate in the presence of gravity and a uniform magnetic field. We first confirm that the Squire transformation for MHD is compatible with the stress and insulating boundary conditions at the free surface, but argue that unless the flow is driven at fixed Galilei and capillary numbers, the critical mode is not necessarily two-dimensional. We then investigate numerically how a flow-normal magnetic field, and the associated Hartmann steady state, affect the soft and hard instability modes of free surface flow, working in the low magnetic Prandtl number regime of laboratory fluids. Because it is a critical layer instability, the hard mode is found to exhibit similar behaviour to the even unstable mode in channel Hartmann flow, in terms of both the weak influence of Pm on its neutral stability curve, and the dependence of its critical Reynolds number Re_c on the Hartmann number Ha. In contrast, the structure of the soft mode's growth rate contours in the (Re, alpha) plane, where alpha is the wavenumber, differs markedly between problems with small, but nonzero, Pm, and their counterparts in the inductionless limit. As derived from large wavelength approximations, and confirmed numerically, the soft mode's critical Reynolds number grows exponentially with Ha in inductionless problems. However, when Pm is nonzero the Lorentz force originating from the steady state current leads to a modification of Re_c(Ha) to either a sublinearly increasing, or decreasing function of Ha, respectively for problems with insulating and conducting walls. In the former, we also observe pairs of Alfven waves, the upstream propagating wave undergoing an instability at large Alfven numbers.

CIX - A Detector for Spectral Enhanced X-ray Imaging by Simultaneous Counting and Integrating

A hybrid pixel detector based on the concept of simultaneous charge integration and photon counting will be presented. The second generation of a counting and integrating X-ray prototype CMOS chip (CIX) has been operated with different direct converting sensor materials (CdZnTe and CdTe) bump bonded to its 8x8 pixel matrix. Photon counting devices give excellent results for low to medium X-ray fluxes but saturate at high rates while charge integration allows the detection of very high fluxes but is limited at low rates by the finite signal to noise ratio. The combination of both signal processing concepts therefore extends the resolvable dynamic range of the X-ray detector. In addition, for a large region of the dynamic range, where counter and integrator operate simultaneously, the mean energy of the detected X-ray spectrum can be calculated. This spectral information can be used to enhance the contrast of the X-ray image. The advantages of the counting and integrating signal processing concept and the performance of the imaging system will be reviewed. The properties of the system with respect to dynamic range and sensor response will be discussed and examples of imaging with additional spectral information will be presented.

Disorder-induced magnetic memory: Experiments and theories

Beautiful theories of magnetic hysteresis based on random microscopic disorder have been developed over the past ten years. Our goal was to directly compare these theories with precise experiments. We first developed and then applied coherent x-ray speckle metrology to a series of thin multilayer perpendicular magnetic materials. To directly observe the effects of disorder, we deliberately introduced increasing degrees of disorder into our films. We used coherent x-rays to generate highly speckled magnetic scattering patterns. The apparently random arrangement of the speckles is due to the exact configuration of the magnetic domains in the sample. In effect, each speckle pattern acts as a unique fingerprint for the magnetic domain configuration. Small changes in the domain structure change the speckles, and comparison of the different speckle patterns provides a quantitative determination of how much the domain structure has changed. How is the magnetic domain configuration at one point on the major hysteresis loop related to the configurations at the same point on the loop during subsequent cycles? The microscopic return-point memory(RPM) is partial and imperfect in the disordered samples, and completely absent when the disorder was not present. We found the complementary-point memory(CPM) is also partial and imperfect in the disordered samples and completely absent when the disorder was not present. We found that the RPM is always a little larger than the CPM. We also studied the correlations between the domains within a single ascending or descending loop. We developed new theoretical models that do fit our experiments.

Status of a DEPFET pixel system for the ILC vertex detector

We have developed a prototype system for the ILC vertex detector based on DEPFET pixels. The system operates a 128x64 matrix (with ~35x25 square micron large pixels) and uses two dedicated microchips, the SWITCHER II chip for matrix steering and the CURO II chip for readout. The system development has been driven by the final ILC requirements which above all demand a detector thinned to 50 micron and a row wise read out with line rates of 20MHz and more. The targeted noise performance for the DEPFET technology is in the range of ENC=100 e-. The functionality of the system has been demonstrated using different radioactive sources in an energy range from 6 to 40keV. In recent test beam experiments using 6GeV electrons, a signal-to-noise ratio of S/N~120 has been achieved with present sensors being 450 micron thick. For improved DEPFET systems using 50 micron thin sensors in future, a signal-to-noise of 40 is expected.

Simultaneous Antiferromagnetic Fe3+ and Nd3+ Ordering in NdFe3(11BO3)4

By means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements, x-ray and unpolarised neutron diffraction investigations on powder and single-crystal samples, simultaneous long-range antiferromagnetic Fe and Nd ordering in NdFe3(11BO3)4 with R 3 2 chemical structure has been found at temperatures below TN = 30.5(5) K down to 1.6 K. At temperatures down to 20 K to the propagation vector is khex = [0,0,3/2] and becomes slightly incommensurate at lower temperatures. Symmetry analysis yields magnetic spiral configurations with the magnetic moments oriented parallel to hexagonal basal plane according to the irreducible representations tau_3 in the commensurate case. This is in agreement with the easy directions of magnetisation perpendicular to the c-axis as determined by magnetic susceptibility measurements. At 1.6 K the magnetic Fe moment amounts to 4.9 muB close to the free ion moment of Fe3+. The magnetic Nd3+ moment saturates presumably due to crystal-field effects at 2.7 muB.

Concept, realization and characterization of serially powered pixel modules (Serial Powering)

We prove and demonstrate here for the example of the large scale pixel detector of ATLAS that Serial Powering of pixel modules is a viable alternative and that has been devised and implemented for ATLAS pixel modules using dedicated on-chip voltage regulators and modified flex hybrids circuits. The equivalent of a pixel ladder consisting of six serially powered pixel modules with about 0.3Mpixels has been built and the performance with respect to noise and threshold stability and operation failures has been studied. We believe that Serial Powering in general will be necessary for future large scale tracking detectors.

Symmetry analysis of k = (1/3,1/3,0) three-sublattice ordering in A14B51 compounds

Bulk magnetic, X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on polycrystalline Tb14Ag51 in the temperature range from 1.5 K to room temperature. Its chemical Gd14Ag51 type structure corresponds to space group P6/m. Combined with group theoretical symmetry analysis, we show that the magnetic structure of this intermetallic compound is of a new k = (1/3,1/3,0) type with three magnetic Tb sublattices ordering simultaneously below TN = 27.5(5) K according to the combined irreducible representations tau4 and tau6. Here we present a general analysis of possible magnetic A ordering for k = (1/3,1/3,0) in A14B51 compounds.

New Results on DEPFET Pixel Detectors for Radiation Imaging and High Energy Particle Detection

DEPFET pixel detectors are unique devices in terms of energy and spatial resolution because very low noise (ENC = 2.2e at room temperature) operation can be obtained by implementing the amplifying transistor in the pixel cell itself. Full DEPFET pixel matrices have been built and operated for autoradiographical imaging with imaging resolutions of 4.3 +- 0.8 um at 22 keV. For applications in low energy X-ray astronomy the high energy resolution of DEPFET detectors is attractive. For particle physics, DEPFET pixels are interesting as low material detectors with high spatial resolution. For a Linear Collider detector the readout must be very fast. New readout chips have been designed and produced for the development of a DEPFET module for a pixel detector at the proposed TESLA collider (520x4000 pixels) with 50 MHz line rate and 25 kHz frame rate. The circuitry contains current memory cells and current hit scanners for fast pedestal subtraction and sparsified readout. The imaging performance of DEPFET devices as well as present achievements towards a DEPFET vertex detector for a Linear Collider are presented.

No UV/IR Mixing in Unitary Space-Time Noncommutative Field Theory

In this article we calculate several divergent amplitudes in phi^4-theory on non-commutative space-time in the framework of Interaction Point Time Ordered Perturbation Theory (IPTOPT), continuing work done in hep-th/0209253. On the ground of these results we find corresponding Feynman rules which allow for a much easier diagrammatic calculation of amplitudes. The most important feature of the present theory is the lack of the UV/IR mixing problem in all amplitudes calculated so far. Although we are not yet able to give a rigorous proof, we provide a strong argument for this result to hold in general. Together with the found Feynman rules this opens promising vistas towards the systematic renormalization of non-commutative field theories.

A new chiral electro-optic effect: Sum-frequency generation from optically active liquids in the presence of a dc electric field

We report the observation of sum-frequency signals that depend linearly on an applied electrostatic field and that change sign with the handedness of an optically active solution. This recently predicted chiral electro-optic effect exists in the electric-dipole approximation. The static electric field gives rise to an electric-field-induced sum-frequency signal (an achiral third-order process) that interferes with the chirality-specific sum-frequency at second-order. The cross-terms linear in the electrostatic field constitute the effect and may be used to determine the absolute sign of second- and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in isotropic media.
