Space/time noncommutative field theories and causality

As argued previously, amplitudes of quantum field theories on noncommutative space and time cannot be computed using naive path integral Feynman rules. One of the proposals is to use the Gell-Mann--Low formula with time-ordering applied before performing the integrations. We point out that the previously given prescription should rather be regarded as an interaction point time-ordering. Causality is explicitly violated inside the region of interaction. It is nevertheless a consistent procedure, which seems to be related to the interaction picture of quantum mechanics. In this framework we compute the one-loop self-energy for a space/time noncommutative ϕ^4 theory. Although in all intermediate steps only three-momenta play a role, the final result is manifestly Lorentz covariant and agrees with the naive calculation. Deriving the Feynman rules for general graphs, we show, however, that such a picture holds for tadpole lines only.

Weak Lensing Results from the 75 Square Degree CTIO Survey

We measure seeing-corrected ellipticities for 2 x 10^6 galaxies with magnitude R<23 in 12 widely separated fields totalling 75 deg^2 of sky. At angular scales >30\arcmin, ellipticity correlations are detected at high significance and exhibit nearly the pure "E-mode" behavior expected of weak gravitational lensing. Even when smoothed to the full field size of 2.5 degrees, which is ~25h^-1 Mpc at the lens distances, an rms shear variance of <γ^2>^1/2 = 0.0012 +- 0.0003 is detected. At smaller angular scales there is significant "B-mode" power, an indication of residual uncorrected PSF distortions. The >30\arcmin data constrain the power spectrum of matter fluctuations on comoving scales of ~10h^-1 Mpc to have σ_8 (Ω_m/0.3)^{0.57} = 0.71^{+0.12}_{-0.16} (95% CL, \LambdaCDM, Γ=0.21), where the systematic error includes statistical and calibration uncertainties, cosmic variance, and a conservative estimate of systematic contamination based upon the detected B-mode signal. This normalization of the power spectrum is lower than previous weak-lensing results but generally consistent them, is at the lower end of the σ_8 range from various analyses of galaxy cluster abundances, and agrees with recent determinations from CMB and galaxy clustering. The large and dispersed sky coverage of our survey reduces random errors and cosmic variance, while the relatively shallow depth allows us to use existing redshift-survey data to reduce systematic uncertainties in the N(z) distribution to insignificance. Reanalysis of the data with more sophisticated algorithms will hopefully reduce the systematic (B-mode) contamination, and allow more precise, multidimensional constraint of cosmological parameters.

A modular PC based silicon microstrip beam telescope with high speed data acquisition

A PC based high speed silicon microstrip beam telescope consisting of several independent modules is presented. Every module contains an AC-coupled double sided silicon microstrip sensor and a complete set of analog and digital signal processing electronics. A digital bus connects the modules with the DAQ PC. A trigger logic unit coordinates the operation of all modules of the telescope. The system architecture allows easy integration of any kind of device under test into the data acquisition chain. Signal digitization, pedestal correction, hit detection and zero suppression are done by hardware inside the modules, so that the amount of data per event is reduced by a factor of 80 compared to conventional readout systems. In combination with a two level data acquisition scheme, this allows event rates up to 7.6 kHz. This is a factor of 40 faster than conventional VME based beam telescopes while comparable analog performance is maintained achieving signal to noise ratios of up to 70:1. The telescope has been tested in the SPS testbeam at CERN. It has been adopted as the reference instrument for testbeam studies for the ATLAS pixel detector development.

Readout Concepts for DEPFET Pixel Arrays

Field effect transistors embedded into a depleted silicon bulk (DEPFETs) can be used as the first amplifying element for the detection of small signal charges deposited in the bulk by ionizing particles, X-ray photons or visible light. Very good noise performance at room temperature due to the low capacitance of the collecting electrode has been demonstrated. Regular two dimensional arrangements of DEPFETs can be read out by turning on individual rows and reading currents or voltages in the columns. Such arrangements allow the fast, low power readout of larger arrays with the possibility of random access to selected pixels. In this paper, different readout concepts are discussed as they are required for arrays with incomplete or complete clear and for readout at the source or the drain. Examples of VLSI chips for the steering of the gate and clear rows and for reading out the columns are presented.

Single Photon X-Ray Imaging with Si- and CdTe-Sensors

Studies of a single photon counting hybrid pixel detector for X-ray imaging applications are presented. A silicon- and a CdTe-sensor were bump bonded onto the MPEC pixel readout chip and could be successfully operated. A new USB based readout system was used for data acquisition. Measurements of the performance on the latest MPEC chip and imaging characterization of the sensors are presented.

Magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in YbPd$_2$Sn

We report muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron measurements on the Heusler system YbPd$_2$Sn. Localised anisotropic and quasi-elastic Yb magnetic fluctuations are observed below $T = 150$K. Both $μ$SR and neutron data indicate a slowing-down of the spin-fluctuations, upon lowering the temperature, similar to that observed in Kondo lattices. The temperature dependence of the quasi-elastic neutron signal is compatible with a crystal-electric field scheme having a $Γ_7^{\rm CEF}$ ground state. The muon depolarization rate exhibits an additional contribution upon decreasing the temperature below $T_{\rm c}$ suggesting a close interplay between magnetic fluctuations and the superconducting state.

Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Channel Flows by the Rational LES Model

The rational large eddy simulation (RLES) model is applied to turbulent channel flows. This approximate deconvolution model is based on a rational (subdiagonal Pade') approximation of the Fourier transform of the Gaussian filter and is proposed as an alternative to the gradient (also known as the nonlinear or tensor-diffusivity) model. We used a spectral element code to perform large eddy simulations of incompressible channel flows at Reynolds numbers based on the friction velocity and the channel half-width Re{sub tau} = 180 and Re{sub tau} = 395. We compared the RLES model with the gradient model. The RLES results showed a clear improvement over those corresponding to the gradient model, comparing well with the fine direct numerical simulation. For comparison, we also present results corresponding to a classical subgrid-scale eddy-viscosity model such as the standard Smagorinsky model.

S-matrix for s-wave gravitational scattering

In the s-wave approximation the 4D Einstein gravity with scalar fields can be reduced to an effective 2D dilaton gravity coupled nonminimally to the matter fields. We study the leading order (tree level) vertices. The 4-particle matrix element is calculated explicitly. It is interpreted as scattering with formation of a virtual black hole state. As one novel feature we predict the gravitational decay of s-waves.

Weak Gravitational Lensing by the Nearby Cluster Abell 3667

We present two weak lensing reconstructions of the nearby ($z_{cl}=0.055$) merging cluster Abell 3667, based on observations taken $\sim 1$ year apart under different seeing conditions. This is the lowest redshift cluster with a weak lensing mass reconstruction to date. The reproducibility of features in the two mass maps demonstrate that weak lensing studies of low-redshift clusters are feasible. These data constitute the first results from an X-ray luminosity-selected weak lensing survey of 19 low-redshift ($z< 0.1$) southern clusters.

Weak Lensing Determination of the Mass in Galaxy Halos

We detect the weak gravitational lensing distortion of 450,000 background galaxies (20<R<23) by 790 foreground galaxies (R<18) selected from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). This is the first detection of weak lensing by field galaxies of known redshift, and as such permits us to reconstruct the shear profile of the typical field galaxy halo in absolute physical units (modulo H_0), and to investigate the dependence of halo mass upon galaxy luminosity. This is also the first galaxy-galaxy lensing study for which the calibration errors are negligible. Within a projected radius of 200 \hkpc, the shear profile is consistent with an isothermal profile with circular velocity 164+-20 km/s for an L* galaxy, consistent with typical disk rotation at this luminosity. This halo mass normalization, combined with the halo profile derived by Fischer et al (2000) from lensing analysis SDSS data, places a lower limit of (2.7+-0.6) x 10^{12}h^{-1} solar masses on the mass of an L* galaxy halo, in good agreement with satellite galaxy studies. Given the known luminosity function of LCRS galaxies, and the assumption that $M\propto L^β$ for galaxies, we determine that the mass within 260\hkpc of normal galaxies contributes $Ω=0.16\pm0.03$ to the density of the Universe (for $β=1$) or $Ω=0.24\pm0.06$ for $β=0.5$. These lensing data suggest that $0.6<β<2.4$ (95% CL), only marginally in agreement with the usual $β\approx0.5$ Faber-Jackson or Tully-Fisher scaling. This is the most complete direct inventory of the matter content of the Universe to date.

Weak Lensing Mass of Nearby Clusters of Galaxies

We describe first results of a project to create weak lensing mass maps for a complete, X-ray luminosity-limited sample of 19 nearby (z < 0.1) southern galaxy clusters scheduled for Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations by the Viper Telescope at the South Pole. We have collected data on 1/3 of the sample and present motivation for the project as well as projected mass maps of two clusters.

The Quadruple Gravitational Lens PG1115+080: Time Delays and Models

Optical photometry is presented for the quadruple gravitational lens PG1115+080. A preliminary reduction of data taken from November 1995 to June 1996 gives component ``C'' leading component ``B'' by 23.7+/-3.4 days and components ``A1'' and ``A2'' by 9.4 days. A range of models has been fit to the image positions, none of which gives an adequate fit. The best fitting and most physically plausible of these, taking the lensing galaxy and the associated group of galaxies to be singular isothermal spheres, gives a Hubble constant of 42 km/s/Mpc for Omega=1, with an observational uncertainty of 14%, as computed from the B-C time delay measurement. Taking the lensing galaxy to have an approximately E5 isothermal mass distribution yields H0=64 km/sec/Mpc while taking the galaxy to be a point mass gives H0=84 km/sec/Mpc. The former gives a particularly bad fit to the position of the lensing galaxy, while the latter is inconsistent with measurements of nearby galaxy rotation curves. Constraints on these and other possible models are expected to improve with planned HST observations.

Measurement of the Mass Profile of Abell 1689

In this letter we present calibrated mass and light profiles of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 1689 out to 1 $h^{-1}$ Mpc from the center. The high surface density of faint blue galaxies at high redshift, selected by their low surface brightness, are unique tools for mapping the projected mass distribution of foreground mass concentrations. The systematic gravitational lens distortions of $10^4$ of these background galaxies in 15\arcmin\ fields reveal detailed mass profiles for intervening clusters of galaxies, and are a direct measure of the growth of mass inhomogeneity. The mass is measured directly, avoiding uncertainties encountered in velocity or X-ray derived mass estimates. Mass in the rich cluster Abell 1689 follows smoothed light, outside 100 h$^{-1}$ kpc, with a rest-frame V band mass-to-light ratio of $400 \pm 60$ $h^{-1} (M/L_V)_\odot$. Near the cluster center, mass appears to be more smoothly distributed than light. Out to a radius of 1 $h^{-1}$ Mpc the total mass follows a steeper than isothermal profile. Comparing with preliminary high resolution N-body clustering simulations for various cosmogonies on these scales, these data are incompatible with hot dark matter, a poor fit to most mixed dark matter models, and favor open or $Λ> 0$ cold dark matter. Substructure is seen in both the mass and the light, but detailed correspondence is erased on scales less than 100 $h^{-1}$ kpc.

Dynamics of the Globular Cluster NGC 362

In this paper we have examined the internal dynamics of the globular cluster NGC 362. A V band surface brightness profile (SBP) was constructed from CCD images, and, after it was determined that the cluster is not post core-collapse, fit with single- and multi-mass King-Michie (KM) models. The total cluster luminosity is 1.70 $\pm 0.1 \times 10^5$ L$_V$\sol. A total of 285 stellar spectra were obtained of 215 stars for radial velocity determinations. Four stars showed strong evidence for radial velocity variations and are probably members of binary systems. The true cluster binary fraction was determined from simulations to be 0.15 for circular orbits or 0.27 for orbits with a distribution function $f(e) = e$ ($e$ is eccentricity). This relatively high binary detection frequency may indicate that NGC 362 is overabundant in binaries compared to other clusters. The 208 remaining stars showed no sign of rotation. The best agreement with both the kinematic data and the SBP were for shallow mass functions $x = 0.0 - 0.5$ and intermediate amounts of anisotropy in the velocity dispersion tensor. The cluster mass is M = $2.5 - 3.5 \times 10^5$ M\sol\ for a global mass-to-light ratio of M/L$_V$ = 1.5 - 2.0 M\sol/L$_V$\sol. This low value for $x$ is in disagreement with the correlation between $x$ and the height above the Galactic disk seen for a sample of other clusters. The results are also different from the sharp turn-up in the low mass end of mass functions derived from some deep luminosity functions of three other globular clusters.

Dynamics of the Young Binary LMC Cluster NGC 1850

In this paper we have examined the age and internal dynamics of the young binary LMC cluster NGC 1850 using BV CCD images and echelle spectra of 52 supergiants. Isochrone fits to a BV color-magnitude diagram revealed that the primary cluster has an age of $τ= 90 \pm 30$ Myr while the secondary member has $τ= 6 \pm 5$ Myr. BV surface brightness profiles were constructed out to R $>$ 40 pc, and single-component King-Michie (KM) models were applied. The total cluster luminosity varied from L$_B$ = 2.60 - 2.65 $\times 10^6$ L$_B$\sol\ and L$_V$ = 1.25 - 1.35 $\times 10^6$ as the anisotropy radius varied from infinity to three times the scale radius with the isotropic models providing the best agreement with the data. Of the 52 stars with echelle spectra, a subset of 36 were used to study the cluster dynamics. The KM radial velocity distributions were fitted to these velocities yielding total cluster masses of 5.4 - 5.9 $\pm 2.4 \times 10^4$ M\sol\ corresponding to M/L$_B$ = 0.02 $\pm 0.01$ M\sol/L$_B$\sol\ or M/L$_V$ = 0.05 $\pm 0.02$ M\sol/L$_V$\sol. A rotational signal in the radial velocities has been detected at the 93\% confidence level implying a rotation axis at a position angle of 100°. A variety of rotating models were fit to the velocity data assuming cluster ellipticities of $ε= 0.1 - 0.3$. These models provided slightly better agreement with the radial velocity data than the KM models and had masses that were systematically lower by a few percent. The preferred value for the slope of a power-law IMF is a relatively shallow, $x = 0.29 \pmm{+0.3}{-0.8}$ assuming the B-band M/L or $x = 0.71 \pmm{+0.2}{-0.4}$ for the V-band.
