Phase formation, phonon behavior, and magnetic properties of novel ferromagnetic La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Ni) triple perovskites

In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling.

Multiferroic double perovskites: Opportunities, Issues and Challenges

Despite the great technological and scientific importance, a well-controlled coupled behavior in magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at room temperature remains challenging. We demonstrate that the self-ordered A2BBO6 (e.g., A = La, B = Mn, and B = Ni) double perovskites provide a unique alternative opportunity to control and/or to induce such behavior in oxides. In this paper, we outline and discuss the various challenges and bottleneck issues related to this class of materials using La2NiMnO6 as a prototype. Details of the synthesis strategies, using pulsed laser deposition as a central tool, to obtain a meticulous control over cation ordering is illustrated. The possible impact of Ni/Mn cation ordering on the magnetic ground states, ferromagnetic transition temperature, phonon behavior, and spin-phonon coupling are presented. Our results are also compared with the current literature on related compounds.

Influence of Ni/Mn cation order on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6 epitaxial films by polarized Raman spectroscopy

We report the influence of Ni/Mn ordering on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6. Three types of films with different levels of structural order, including long-range Ni/Mn cation order, cation disorder, and an admixture of the ordered and disordered phases, are compared by polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Each film displays a strong dependence on the polarization configuration and a unique set of Raman active phonon excitations. Long-range cation ordering results in the splitting of Raman active phonon peaks because of Brillouin zone folding and lowering symmetry. Phonon mode softening begins clearly at a distinct temperature for each sample revealing a strong spin-lattice interaction. It follows closely the magnetization curve in ordered films. Unlike the admixture and the ordered films, softening behavior is strongly suppressed in the cation-disordered films. These differences may be understood based on the variation in amplitude of the spin-spin correlation functions due to the local Ni/Mn cation ordering.

Origin of the anomalous Hall Effect in overdoped n-type cuprates: current vertex corrections due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations

The anomalous magneto-transport properties in electron doped (n-type) cuprates were investigated using Hall measurements at THz frequencies. The complex Hall angle was measured in overdoped Pr$_{\rm 2-x}$Ce$_{\rm x}$CuO$_{\rm 4}$ samples (x=0.17 and 0.18) as a continuous function of temperature above $T_c$ at excitation energies 5.24 and 10.5 meV. The results, extrapolated to low temperatures, show that inelastic scattering introduces electron-like contributions to the Hall response. First principle calculations of the Hall angle that include current vertex corrections (CVC) induced by electron interactions mediated by magnetic fluctuations in the Hall conductivity reproduce the temperature, frequency, and doping dependence of the experimental data. These results show that CVC effects are the source of the anomalous Hall transport properties in overdoped n$\text{-}$type cuprates.

Long-range Ni/Mn structural order in epitaxial double perovskite La2NiMnO6 thin films

We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appearance of these additional phonon excitations is interpreted as the clearest signature of Brillouin zone folding as a result of the long-range Ni/Mn ordering in La2NiMnO6. Both ordered and disordered materials display a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition. The ordered films display also a saturation magnetization close to 4.8 mB/f.u. and a transition temperature (FM-TC) around 270 K, while the disordered ones have only a 3.7 mB/f.u. saturation magnetization and a FM-TC around 138 K. The differences in their magnetic behaviours are understood based on the distinct local electronic configurations of their Ni/Mn cations.

Growth, magnetic properties and Raman scattering of La2NiMnO6 single crystals

Millimeter size single crystals of double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) were grown by the High Temperature Solution Growth Method. The magnetic measurements and polarized Raman spectra between 5 and 350K provide evidence that the crystals have high degree of Ni(2+)/Mn(4+)ordering, small amount of lattice defects and highest Tc = 288K reported so far for ferromagnetic double perovskites. At a microscopic level the crystals are heavily twinned and the effect of twinning on the Raman spectra is analyzed in detail.

Reply to "Comment on `Low-temperature phonon thermal conductivity of single-crystalline Nd$_2$CuO$_4$: Effects of sample size and surface roughness' " by Sun et al

In their comment \cite{Sun} on our study of phonon heat transport in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ \cite{Li}, Sun and Ando estimate that the phonon mean free path at low temperature is roughly half the width of the single crystal used in our study, from which they argue that phonon scattering cannot be dominated by sample boundaries. Here we show that their use of specific heat data on Nd$_2$CuO$_4$, which contains a large magnetic contribution at low temperature that is difficult to reliably extract, leads to an underestimate of the mean free path by a factor two compared to an estimate based on the specific heat data of the non-magnetic isostructural analog Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. This removes the apparent contradiction raised by Sun and Ando.

A radical approach to promote multiferroic coupling in double perovskites

Double perovskites provide a unique opportunity to induce and control multiferroic behaviors in oxide systems. The appealing possibility to design materials with a strong coupling between the magnetization and the polarization fields may be achieved in this family since these magnetic insulators can present structural self-ordering in the appropriate growth conditions. We have studied the functional properties of La2CoMnO6 and Bi2CoMnO6 epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Cation-ordered La2CoMnO6 films display a magnetic Curie temperature of 250 K while cation-disordered Bi2CoMnO6 films present ferromagnetism up to ~ 800 K. Such high transition temperature for magnetic ordering can be further tuned by varying the strain in the films indicating an important contribution from the structural characteristics of the materials. Our approach might be generalized for other oxide systems. At this end, our results are compared with other multiferroic systems. The roles of various cations, their arrangements and structural effects are further discussed.

Stabilization and functional properties of La3NiAlMnO9 and La3CoAlMnO9 magnetoelectric triple perovskites

Ferromagnetic La3NiAlMnO9 (LNAMO) and La3CoAlMnO9 (LCAMO) triple-perovskite thin films are stabilized in the 750-860 oC temperature range in 100 to 900 mTorr O2 pressure range using pulsed-laser deposition. The LCAMO and LNAMO films exhibit ferromagnetism up to 190 K and 130 K respectively. The structural, optical and magnetic properties of these films demonstrate that the B-site 3d-cations, Al, Mn and Co or Ni ions, are structurally short-range ordered. The strong spin-lattice-polarization coupling in LCAMO is evidenced by the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the softening of the phonon frequencies starting in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition mimicking the behaviours of La2CoMnO6 double perovskite.

Terahertz magneto-transport measurements in underdoped PCCO and comparison with ARPES

We present magneto-transport measurements performed on underdoped PCCO at THz frequencies as a function of temperature and doping. A rapidly decreasing Hall mass is observed as the doping is reduced consistent with the formation of small electron Fermi pockets. However, both dc and infrared (IR) magneto-transport data strongly deviate from the predictions of transport theory in the relaxation time approximation (RTA) based on angular resolved photoemission data. The Hall mass is observed to increase continuously with increasing temperature with no signature at the Neel temperature. In the paramagnetic state, the temperature dependence of the Hall mass is consistent with current vertex corrections to the Hall conductivity due to magnetic fluctuations as observed in overdoped PCCO. Possible causal mechanisms for the discrepancy between transport theory within the RTA and the magneto-transport data are discussed.

Low-temperature phonon thermal conductivity of cuprate single crystals

The effect of sample size and surface roughness on the phonon thermal conductivity $κ_p$ of Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals was studied down to 50 mK. At 0.5 K, $κ_p$ is proportional to $\sqrt{A}$, where $A$ is the cross-sectional area of the sample. This demonstrates that $κ_p$ is dominated by boundary scattering below 0.5 K or so. However, the expected $T^3$ dependence of $κ_p$ is not observed down to 50 mK. Upon roughing the surfaces, the $T^3$ dependence is restored, showing that departures from $T^3$ are due to specular reflection of phonons off the mirror-like sample surfaces. We propose an empirical power law fit, to $κ_p \sim T^α$ (where $α< 3$) in cuprate single crystals. Using this method, we show that recent thermal conductivity studies of Zn doping in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ re-affirm the universal heat conductivity of d-wave quasiparticles at $T \to 0$.

Antiferromagnetism-superconductivity competition in electron-doped cuprates triggered by oxygen reduction

We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of as-grown and oxygen-reduced Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_4$ electron-doped cuprates. In contrast to the common belief, neither the band filling nor the band parameters are significantly affected by the oxygen reduction process. Instead, we show that the main electronic role of the reduction process is to remove an anisotropic leading edge gap around the Fermi surface. While the nodal leading edge gap is induced by long-range antiferomagnetic order, the origin of the antinodal one remains unclear.

Optical determination of the superconducting energy gap in electron-doped Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4

The optical properties of single crystal Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4 have been measured over a wide frequency range above and below the critical temperature (T_c \simeq 20 K). In the normal state the coherent part of the conductivity is described by the Drude model, from which the scattering rate just above T_c is determined to be 1/τ\simeq 80 cm^{-1}. The condition that \hbar/τ\approx 2k_B T near T_c appears to be a general result in many of the cuprate superconductors. Below T_c the formation of a superconducting energy gap is clearly visible in the reflectance, from which the gap maximum is estimated to be Δ_0 \simeq 35 cm^{-1} (4.3 meV). The ability to observe the superconducting energy gap in the optical properties favors the nonmonotonic over the monotonic description of the d-wave gap. The penetration depth for T\ll T_c is λ\simeq 2000 Å, which when taken with the estimated value for the dc conductivity just above T_c of σ_{dc} \simeq 35 \times 10^3 Ω^{-1}cm^{-1} places this material on the general scaling line for the cuprates defined by 1/λ^2 \propto σ_{dc}(T\simeq T_c) \times T_c. This result is consistent with the observation that 1/τ\approx 2Δ_0, which implies that the material is not in the clean limit.

Field-dependent diamagnetic transition in magnetic superconductor $Sm_{1.85} Ce_{0.15} Cu O_{4-y}$

The magnetic penetration depth of single crystal $\rm{Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}}$ was measured down to 0.4 K in dc fields up to 7 kOe. For insulating $\rm{Sm_2CuO_4}$, Sm$^{3+}$ spins order at the Néel temperature, $T_N = 6$ K, independent of the applied field. Superconducting $\rm{Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}}$ ($T_c \approx 23$ K) shows a sharp increase in diamagnetic screening below $T^{\ast}(H)$ which varied from 4.0 K ($H = 0$) to 0.5 K ($H =$ 7 kOe) for a field along the c-axis. If the field was aligned parallel to the conducting planes, $T^{\ast}$ remained unchanged. The unusual field dependence of $T^{\ast}$ indicates a spin freezing transition that dramatically increases the superfluid density.

Fourfold oscillations and anomalous magnetic irreversibility of magnetoresistance in the non-metallic regime of Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4

Using magnetoresistance measurements as a function of applied magnetic field and its direction of application, we present sharp angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations for the electron-doped cuprates in their low-temperature non-metallic regime. The presence of irreversibility in the magnetoresistance measurements and the related strong anisotropy of the field dependence for different in-plane magnetic field orientations indicate that magnetic domains play an important role for the determination of electronic properties. These domains are likely related to the stripe phase reported previously in hole-doped cuprates.

Nodal Order Parameter in Electron-Doped Superconducting Films Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y) (x=0.13, 0.15 and 0.17)

The London penetration depth, lambda{ab}(T), is reported for thin films of the electron-doped superconductor Pr{2-x}Ce{x}CuO{4-y} at three doping levels (x = 0.13, 0.15 and 0.17). Measurements down to 0.35 K were carried out using a tunnel diode oscillator with excitation fields applied both perpendicular and parallel to the conducting planes. For all samples and both field orientations lambda{ab}(T) showed power law behavior implying a superconducting gap with nodes.

Low-energy excitations around (π/2, π/2) points in the pseudogap phase of Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

Polarized electronic Raman scattering from the NCCO superconductor at optimal electron doping (T_c=22 K) reveals the formation of an anisotropic pseudogap below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 220 K and energy E*_g = 850 cm-1. Below T* a pronounced suppression of the incoherent spectral weight below E*_g in the nodal directions of k-space is observed. This is concomitant with the emergence of long-lived excitations in the vicinity of the (π/2, π/2) points that do not contribute to the optical conductivity.
