Superconductivity and Field-Induced Magnetism in Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ Single Crystals

We report muon-spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the electron-doped high-T_c superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. In zero external magnetic field, superconductivity is found to coexist with Cu spins that are static on the muSR time scale. In an applied field, we observe a Knight shift that is primarily due to the magnetic moment induced on the Pr ions. Below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, an additional source of static magnetic order appears throughout the sample. This finding is consistent with antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cu spins in the presence of vortices. We also find that the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth in the vortex state resembles that of the hole-doped cuprates at temperatures above ~ 0.2 T_c.

Campbell Penetration Depth of a Superconductor in the Critical State

The magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in the presence of a slowly relaxing supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8}$ below approximately 25 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ is strongly hysteretic. We propose that the irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. The Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_{c}$ where $j_{c}$ is the critical current defined through the Labusch parameter. Similar effects were observed in other cuprates and in an organic superconductor.

Magnetic Field Dependence of Electronic Specific Heat in Pr_{1.85} Ce_{0.15} CuO_4

The specific heat of electron-doped Pr_{1.85} Ce_{0.15} CuO_4 single crystals is reported for the temperature range 2 - 10 K and magnetic field range 0 - 10 T. A non-linear magnetic field dependence is observed for the field range 0 - 2 T. Our data supports a model with lines of nodes in the gap function of these superconductors. Theoretical calculations of the electronic specific heat for dirty d-wave, clean d-wave, and s-wave symmetries are compared to our data.

Infrared optical properties of Pr2CuO4

The ab-plane reflectance of a Pr2CuO4 single crystal has been measured over a wide frequency range at a variety of temperatures, and the optical properties determined from a Kramers-Kronig analysis. Above ~ 250 K, the low frequency conductivity increases quickly with temperature; the resistivity follows the form e^(E_a/k_BT), where E_a ~ 0.17 eV is much less than the inferred optical gap of ~ 1.2 eV. Transport measurements show that at low temperature the resistivity deviates from activated behavior and follows the form e^[(T_0/T)^1/4], indicating that the dc transport in this material is due to variable-range hopping between localized states in the gap. The four infrared-active Eu modes dominate the infrared optical properties. Below ~ 200 K, a striking new feature appears near the low-frequency Eu mode, and there is additional new fine structure at high frequency. A normal coordinate analysis has been performed and the detailed nature of the zone-center vibrations determined. Only the low-frequency Eu mode has a significant Pr-Cu interaction. Several possible mechanisms related to the antiferromagnetism in this material are proposed to explain the sudden appearance of this and other new spectral features at low temperature.

Nonmonotonic d_{x^2-y^2} Superconducting Order Parameter in Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4

Low energy polarized electronic Raman scattering of the electron doped superconductor Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4 (T_c=22 K) has revealed a nonmonotonic d_{x^2-y^2} superconducting order parameter. It has a maximum gap of 4.4 k_BT_c at Fermi surface intersections with antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone (the ``hot spots'') and a smaller gap of 3.3 k_BT_c at fermionic Brillouin zone boundaries. The gap enhancement in the vicinity of the ``hot spots'' emphasizes role of antiferromagnetic fluctuations and similarity in the origin of superconductivity for electron- and hole-doped cuprates.

Breakdown of Fermi-liquid theory in a cuprate superconductor

The behaviour of electrons in solids is remarkably well described by Landau's Fermi-liquid theory, which says that even though electrons in a metal interact they can still be treated as well-defined fermions, called ``quasiparticles''. At low temperature, the ability of quasiparticles to transport heat is strictly given by their ability to transport charge, via a universal relation known as the Wiedemann-Franz law, which no material in nature has been known to violate. High-temperature superconductors have long been thought to fall outside the realm of Fermi-liquid theory, as suggested by several anomalous properties, but this has yet to be shown conclusively. Here we report on the first experimental test of the Wiedemann-Franz law in a cuprate superconductor, (Pr,Ce)$_2$CuO$_4$. Our study reveals a clear departure from the universal law and provides compelling evidence for the breakdown of Fermi-liquid theory in high-temperature superconductors.

Evidence of a d to s-wave pairing symmetry transition in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

We present point contact spectroscopy (PCS) data for junctions between a normal metal and the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (PCCO). For the underdoped compositions of this cuprate ($x \sim 0.13$) we observe a peak in the conductance-voltage characteristics of the point contact junctions. The shape and magnitude of this peak suggests the presence of Andreev bound states at the surface of underdoped PCCO which is evidence for a d-wave pairing symmetry. For overdoped PCCO ($x \sim 0.17$) the PCS data does not show any evidence of Andreev bound states at the surface suggesting an s-wave pairing symmetry.

Influence of oxygen isotope exchange on the ground state of manganites

We report a study of oxygen isotope effects on low temperature specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$. For the metallic compositions of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and for charge-ordered La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ no change in low temperature specific heat has been detected with $^{16}$O -$^{18}$O exchange, while compounds of (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (0.4<y<0.6) show a significant change in low temperature properties. The low temperature specific heat indicates a presence of the charge-ordered phase even in compositions of (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ which are metallic at low temperatures. We suggest that the changes induced by the oxygen isotope exchange are caused by an increase of the charge-ordered phase in $^{18}$O samples.

Gapped tunneling spectra in the normal state of Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

We present tunneling data in the normal state of the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ for three different values of the doping $x$. The normal state is obtained by applying a magnetic field greater than the upper critical field, $H_{c2}$ for $T < T_c$. We observe an anomalous normal state gap near the Fermi level. From our analysis of the tunneling data we conclude that this is a feature of the normal state density of states. We discuss possible reasons for the formation of this gap and its implications for the nature of the charge carriers in the normal and the superconducting states of cuprate superconductors.

Inherent Inhomogeneities in Tunneling Spectra of BSCCO Crystals in the Superconducting State

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on cleaved BSCCO(2212) single crystals reveal inhomogeneities on length-scales of $\sim$30 $Å$. While most of the surface yields spectra consistent with a d-wave superconductor, small regions show a doubly gapped structure with both gaps lacking coherence peaks and the larger gap having a size typical of the respective pseudo-gap for the same sample.

Is there a vortex-glass transition in high-temperature superconductors?

We show that DC voltage versus current measurements of a YBCO micro-bridge in a magnetic field can be collapsed onto scaling functions proposed by Fisher, Fisher, and Huse, as is widely reported in the literature. We find, however, that good data collapse is achieved for a wide range of critical exponents and temperatures. These results strongly suggest that agreement with scaling alone does not prove the existence of a phase transition. We propose a criterion to determine if the data collapse is valid, and thus if a phase transition occurs. To our knowledge, none of the data reported in the literature meet our criterion.

Measurements of the absolute value of the penetration depth in high-$ T_c$ superconductors using a tunnel diode resonator

A method is presented to measure the absolute value of the London penetration depth, $λ$, from the frequency shift of a resonator. The technique involves coating a high-$T_c$ superconductor (HTSC) with film of low - Tc material of known thickness and penetration depth. The method is applied to measure London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O{7-δ} (YBCO) Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+δ} (BSCCO) and Pr{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO{4-δ}$ (PCCO). For YBCO and BSCCO, the values of $λ(0)$ are in agreement with the literature values. For PCCO $λ\approx 2790$ Å, reported for the first time.

Low-Energy Quasiparticles in Cuprate Superconductors: A Quantitative Analysis

A residual linear term is observed in the thermal conductivity of optimally-doped Bi-2212 at very low temperatures whose magnitude is in excellent agreement with the value expected from Fermi-liquid theory and the d-wave energy spectrum measured by photoemission spectroscopy, with no adjustable parameters. This solid basis allows us to make a quantitative analysis of thermodynamic properties at low temperature and establish that thermally-excited quasiparticles are a significant, perhaps even the dominant mechanism in suppressing the superfluid density in cuprate superconductors Bi-2212 and YBCO.

Evidence for nodal quasiparticles in electron-doped cuprates from penetration depth measurements

The in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured down to 0.4 K in single crystals of electron-doped superconductors, Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PCCO) and Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (NCCO). In PCCO, the superfluid density varies as $T^2$ from 0.025 up to roughly 0.3 $T/T_c$ suggestive of a d-wave state with impurities. In NCCO, $λ(T)$ shows a pronounced upturn for $T < 4$ K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd$^{3+}$ ions. Fits to an s-wave order parameter over the standard BCS range ($T/T_c$ = 0.32) limit any gap to less than $Δ_{min} (0)/T_c = 0.57$ in NCCO. For PCCO, the absence of paramagnetism permits a lower temperature fit and yields an upper limit of $Δ_{min} (0)/T_c = 0.2$.

Magnetic penetration depth in electron-doped cuprates - evidence for gap nodes

The in-plane penetration depth λ(T) is measured in electron-doped single crystals Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-x (NCCO) and Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-x (PCCO) using a 11 MHz LC resonator. In NCCO, λ(T) exhibits a minimum at 3.8 K and a pronounced upturn down to 0.4 K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd3+ ions. The London penetration depth contribution is linear in T. The paramagnetic contribution is absent in PCCO, where λ(T)~T^2 at low temperatures. Our results indicate the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap, i.e., non s-wave symmetry of the order parameter in electron-doped cuprates.
