Localized Breathing Modes in Granular Crystals with Defects

We investigate nonlinear localized modes at light-mass impurities in a one-dimensional, strongly-compressed chain of beads under Hertzian contacts. Focusing on the case of one or two such "defects", we analyze the problem's linear limit to identify the system eigenfrequencies and the linear defect modes. We then examine the bifurcation of nonlinear defect modes from their linear counterparts and study their linear stability in detail. We identify intriguing differences between the case of impurities in contact and ones that are not in contact. We find that the former bears similarities to the single defect case, whereas the latter features symmetry-breaking bifurcations with interesting static and dynamic implications.

Phase Separation and Dynamics of Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the interactions between two atomic species in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate to revisit the conditions for miscibility, oscillatory dynamics between the species, steady state solutions and their stability. By employing a variational approach for a quasi one-dimensional, two-atomic species, condensate we obtain equations of motion for the parameters of each species: amplitude, width, position and phase. A further simplification leads to a reduction of the dynamics into a simple classical Newtonian system where components oscillate in an effective potential with a frequency that depends on the harmonic trap strength and the interspecies coupling parameter. We develop explicit conditions for miscibility that can be interpreted as a phase diagram that depends on the harmonic trap's strength and the interspecies species coupling parameter. We numerically illustrate the bifurcation scenario whereby non-topological, phase-separated states of increasing complexity emerge out of a symmetric state, as the interspecies coupling is increased. The symmetry-breaking dynamical evolution of some of these states is numerically monitored and the associated asymmetric states are also explored.

Manipulation of Vortices by Localized Impurities in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We consider the manipulation of Bose-Einstein condensate vortices by optical potentials generated by focused laser beams. It is shown that for appropriate choices of the laser strength and width it is possible to successfully transport vortices to various positions inside the trap confining the condensate atoms. Furthermore, the full bifurcation structure of possible stationary single-charge vortex solutions in a harmonic potential with this type of impurity is elucidated. The case when a moving vortex is captured by a stationary laser beam is also studied, as well as the possibility of dragging the vortex by means of periodic optical lattices.

Nucleation of breathers via stochastic resonance in nonlinear lattices

By applying a staggered driving force in a prototypical discrete model with a quartic nonlinearity, we demonstrate the spontaneous formation and destruction of discrete breathers with a selected frequency due to thermal fluctuations. The phenomenon exhibits the striking features of stochastic resonance (SR): a nonmonotonic behavior as noise is increased and breather generation under subthreshold conditions. The corresponding peak is associated with a matching between the external driving frequency and the breather frequency at the average energy given by ambient temperature.

Soliton Dynamics in Linearly Coupled Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We study soliton dynamics in a system of two linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which describe the dynamics of a two-component Bose gas, coupled by an electromagnetic field, and confined in a strong optical lattice. When the nonlinear coupling strengths are equal, we use a unitary transformation to remove the linear coupling terms, and show that the existing soliton solutions oscillate from one species to the other. When the nonlinear coupling strengths are different, the soliton dynamics is numerically investigated and the findings are compared to the results of an effective two-mode model. The case of two linearly coupled Ablowitz-Ladik equations is also investigated.

Solitons in quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with competing dipolar and local interactions

We study families of one-dimensional matter-wave bright solitons supported by the competition of contact and dipole-dipole (DD) interactions of opposite signs. Soliton families are found, and their stability is investigated in the free space, and in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). Free-space solitons may exist with an arbitrarily weak local attraction if the strength of the DD repulsion is fixed. In the case of the DD attraction, solitons do not exist beyond a maximum value of the local-repulsion strength. In the system which includes the OL, a stability region for \textit{subfundamental solitons} (SFSs) is found in the second finite bandgap. For the existence of gap solitons (GSs) under the attractive DD interaction, the contact repulsion must be strong enough. In the opposite case of the DD repulsion, GSs exist if the contact attraction is not too strong. Collisions between solitons in the free space are studied too. In the case of the local attraction, they merge or pass through each other at small and large velocities, respectively. In the presence of the local repulsion, slowly moving solitons bounce from each other.

A two-dimensional paradigm for symmetry breaking: the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a four-well potential

We study the existence and stability of localized states in the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS)/Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a symmetric four-well potential. Using a fourmode approximation, we are able to trace the parametric evolution of the trapped stationary modes, starting from the corresponding linear limits, and thus derive the complete bifurcation diagram for the families of these stationary modes. The predictions based on the four-mode decomposition are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results obtained from the NLS equation. Actually, the stability properties coincide with those suggested by the corresponding discrete model in the large-amplitude limit. The dynamics of the unstable modes is explored by means of direct simulations. Finally, while we present the full analysis for the case of the focusing nonlinearity, the bifurcation diagram for the defocusing case is briefly considered too.

Higher-order effects and ultra-short solitons in left-handed metamaterials

Starting from Maxwell's equations, we use the reductive perturbation method to derive a second-order and a third-order nonlinear Schroedinger equation, describing ultra-short solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials. We find necessary conditions and derive exact bright and dark soliton solutions of these equations for the electric and magnetic field envelopes.

Localized structures in Kagome lattices

We investigate the existence and stability of gap vortices and multi-pole gap solitons in a Kagome lattice with a defocusing nonlinearity both in a discrete case and in a continuum one with periodic external modulation. In particular, predictions are made based on expansion around a simple and analytically tractable anti-continuum (zero coupling) limit. These predictions are then confirmed for a continuum model of an optically-induced Kagome lattice in a photorefractive crystal obtained by a continuous transformation of a honeycomb lattice.

Discrete breathers in a forced-damped array of coupled pendula: Modeling, Computation and Experiment

In this work, we present a mechanical example of an experimental realization of a stability reversal between on-site and inter-site centered localized modes. A corresponding realization of a vanishing of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier allows for an experimentally observed enhanced mobility of the localized modes near the reversal point. These features are supported by detailed numerical computations of the stability and mobility of the discrete breathers in this system of forced and damped coupled pendula. Furthermore, additional exotic features of the relevant model, such as dark breathers are briefly discussed.

Stable higher-charge discrete vortices in hexagonal optical lattices

We show that double-charge discrete optical vortices may be completely stable in hexagonal photonic lattices where single-charge vortices always exhibit dynamical instabilities. Even when unstable the double-charge vortices typically have a much weaker instability than the single-charge vortices, and thus their breakup occurs at longer propagation distances.

Discrete solitons and vortices in hexagonal and honeycomb lattices: Existence, stability, and dynamics

We consider a prototypical dynamical lattice model, namely, the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation on nonsquare lattice geometries. We present a systematic classification of the solutions that arise in principal six-lattice-site and three-lattice-site contours in the form of both discrete multipole solitons and discrete vortices. Additionally to identifying the possible states, we analytically track their linear stability both qualitatively and quantitatively. We find that among the six-site configurations, the hexapole of alternating phases, as well as the vortex of topological charge S=2 have intervals of stability; among three-site states, only the vortex of topological charge S=1 may be stable in the case of focusing nonlinearity. These conclusions are confirmed both for hexagonal and for honeycomb lattices by means of detailed numerical bifurcation analysis of the stationary states from the anticontinuum limit, and by direct simulations to monitor the dynamical instabilities, when the latter arise. The dynamics reveal a wealth of nonlinear behavior resulting not only in single-site solitary wave forms, but also in robust multisite breathing structures.

Interlaced solitons and vortices in coupled DNLS lattices

In the present work, we propose a new set of coherent structures that arise in nonlinear dynamical lattices with more than one components, namely interlaced solitons. These are waveforms in which in the relevant anti-continuum limit, i.e. when the sites are uncoupled, one component has support where the other component does not. We illustrate systematically how one can combine dynamically stable unary patterns to create ones such for the binary case of two-components. In the one-dimensional setting, we provide also a detailed theoretical analysis of the existence and stability of these waveforms, while in higher dimensions, where such analytical computations are far more involved, we resort to corresponding numerical computations. Lastly, we perform direct numerical simulations to showcase how these structures break up, when exponentially or oscillatorily unstable, to structures with a smaller number of participating sites.

Dissipative Solitary Waves in Granular Crystals

We provide a quantitative characterization of dissipative effects in one-dimensional granular crystals. We use the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves as a diagnostic tool and develop optimization schemes that allow one to compute the relevant exponents and prefactors of the dissipative terms in the equations of motion. We thereby propose a quantitatively-accurate extension of the Hertzian model that encompasses dissipative effects via a discrete Laplacian of the velocities. Experiments and computations with steel, brass, and polytetrafluoroethylene reveal a {\em common} dissipation exponent with a material-dependent prefactor.

Azimuthal Modulational Instability of Vortices in the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We study the azimuthal modulational instability of vortices with different topological charges, in the focusing two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation. The method of studying the stability relies on freezing the radial direction in the Lagrangian functional of the NLS in order to form a quasi-one-dimensional azimuthal equation of motion, and then applying a stability analysis in Fourier space of the azimuthal modes. We formulate predictions of growth rates of individual modes and find that vortices are unstable below a critical azimuthal wave number. Steady state vortex solutions are found by first using a variational approach to obtain an asymptotic analytical ansatz, and then using it as an initial condition to a numerical optimization routine. The stability analysis predictions are corroborated by direct numerical simulations of the NLS. We briefly show how to extend the method to encompass nonlocal nonlinearities that tend to stabilize solutions.

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in double well potentials

We consider the statics and dynamics of F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in double well potentials. We use a two-mode Galerkin-type quasi-analytical approximation to describe the stationary states of the system. This way, we are able to obtain not only earlier results based on the single mode approximation (SMA) frequently used in studies of spinor BECs, but also additional modes that involve either two or all three spinor components of the F = 1 spinor BEC. The results based on this Galerkin-type decomposition are in good agreement with the analysis of the full system. We subsequently analyze the stability of these multi-component states, as well as their dynamics when we find them to be unstable. The instabilities of the symmetric or anti-symmetric states exhibit symmetry-breaking and recurrent asymmetric patterns. Our results yield qualitatively similar bifurcation diagrams both for polar (such as Na23) and ferromagnetic (such as Rb87) spinor BECs.

Matter-Wave Solitons in the Presence of Collisional Inhomogeneities: Perturbation theory and the impact of derivative terms

We study the dynamics of bright and dark matter-wave solitons in the presence of a spatially varying nonlinearity. When the spatial variation does not involve zero crossings, a transformation is used to bring the problem to a standard nonlinear Schrodinger form, but with two additional terms: an effective potential one and a non-potential term. We illustrate how to apply perturbation theory of dark and bright solitons to the transformed equations. We develop the general case, but primarily focus on the non-standard special case whereby the potential term vanishes, for an inverse square spatial dependence of the nonlinearity. In both cases of repulsive and attractive interactions, appropriate versions of the soliton perturbation theory are shown to accurately describe the soliton dynamics.

Wave patterns generated by a supersonic moving body in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Generation of wave structures by a two-dimensional object (laser beam) moving in a two-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with a velocity greater than both sound velocities of the mixture is studied by means of analytical methods and systematic simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The wave pattern features three regions separated by two Mach cones. Two branches of linear patterns similar to the so-called "ship waves" are located outside the corresponding Mach cones, and oblique dark solitons are found inside the wider cone. An analytical theory is developed for the linear patterns. A particular dark-soliton solution is also obtained, its stability is investigated, and two unstable modes of transverse perturbations are identified. It is shown that, for a sufficiently large flow velocity, this instability has a convective character in the reference frame attached to the moving body, which makes the dark soliton effectively stable. The analytical findings are corroborated by numerical simulations.
