Spinor Bose-Einstein condensate flow past an obstacle

We study the flow of a spinor (F=1) Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an obstacle. We consider the cases of ferromagnetic and polar spin-dependent interactions and find that the system demonstrates two speeds of sound that are identified analytically. Numerical simulations reveal the nucleation of macroscopic nonlinear structures, such as dark solitons and vortex-antivortex pairs, as well as vortex rings in one- and higher-dimensional settings respectively, when a localized defect (e.g., a blue-detuned laser beam) is dragged through the spinor condensate at a speed larger than the second critical speed.

Collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates in double-well potentials

In this work, we consider quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), with spatially varying collisional interactions, trapped in double well potentials. In particular, we study a setup in which such a 'collisionally inhomogeneous' BEC has the same (attractive-attractive or repulsive-repulsive) or different (attractive-repulsive) type of interparticle interactions. Our analysis is based on the continuation of the symmetric ground state and anti-symmetric first excited state of the noninteracting (linear) limit into their nonlinear counterparts. The collisional inhomogeneity produces a saddle-node bifurcation scenario between two additional solution branches; as the inhomogeneity becomes stronger, the turning point of the saddle-node tends to infinity and eventually only the two original branches remain present, which is completely different from the standard double-well phenomenology. Finally, one of these branches changes its monotonicity as a function of the chemical potential, a feature especially prominent, when the sign of the nonlinearity changes between the two wells. Our theoretical predictions, are in excellent agreement with the numerical results.

Asymptotic stability of small solitons in the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation in one dimension

Asymptotic stability of small solitons in one dimension is proved in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with septic and higher power-law nonlinearities and an external potential supporting a simple isolated eigenvalue. The analysis relies on the dispersive decay estimates from Pelinovsky & Stefanov (2008) and the arguments of Mizumachi (2008) for a continuous nonlinear Schrodinger equation in one dimension. Numerical simulations suggest that the actual decay rate of perturbations near the asymptotically stable solitons is higher than the one used in the analysis.

Surface Solitons in Three Dimensions

We study localized modes on the surface of a three-dimensional dynamical lattice. The stability of these structures on the surface is investigated and compared to that in the bulk of the lattice. Typically, the surface makes the stability region larger, an extreme example of that being the three-site "horseshoe"-shaped structure, which is always unstable in the bulk, while at the surface it is stable near the anti-continuum limit. We also examine effects of the surface on lattice vortices. For the vortex placed parallel to the surface this increased stability region feature is also observed, while the vortex cannot exist in a state normal to the surface. More sophisticated localized dynamical structures, such as five-site horseshoes and pyramids, are also considered.

Vortex solutions of the discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper, we consider the dynamical evolution of dark vortex states in the two-dimensional defocusing discrete nonlinear Schroedinger model, a model of interest both to atomic physics and to nonlinear optics. We find that in a way reminiscent of their 1d analogs, i.e., of discrete dark solitons, the discrete defocusing vortices become unstable past a critical coupling strength and, in the infinite lattice, they apparently remain unstable up to the continuum limit where they are restabilized. In any infinite lattice, stabilization windows of the structures may be observed. Systematic tools are offered for the continuation of the states both from the continuum and, especially, from the anti-continuum limit. Although the results are mainly geared towards the uniform case, we also consider the effect of harmonic trapping potentials.

Experimental observation of oscillating and interacting matter wave dark solitons

We report on the generation, subsequent oscillation and interaction of a pair of matter wave dark solitons. These are created by releasing a Bose-Einstein condensate from a double well potential into a harmonic trap in the crossover regime between one dimension (1D) and three dimensions (3D). The oscillation of the solitons is observed and the frequency is in quantitative agreement with simulations using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. An effective particle picture is developed and reveals that the deviation of the observed frequencies from the asymptotic prediction $ν_{z}/\sqrt{2}$, where $ν_{z}$ is the longitudinal trapping frequency, results from the dimensionality of the system and the interaction between the solitons.

Matter-wave solitons with a periodic, piecewise-constant nonlinearity

Motivated by recent proposals of ``collisionally inhomogeneous'' Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which have a spatially modulated scattering length, we study the existence and stability properties of bright and dark matter-wave solitons of a BEC characterized by a periodic, piecewise-constant scattering length. We use a ``stitching'' approach to analytically approximate the pertinent solutions of the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger equation by matching the wavefunction and its derivatives at the interfaces of the nonlinearity coefficient. To accurately quantify the stability of bright and dark solitons, we adapt general tools from the theory of perturbed Hamiltonian systems. We show that solitons can only exist at the centers of the constant regions of the piecewise-constant nonlinearity. We find both stable and unstable configurations for bright solitons and show that all dark solitons are unstable, with different instability mechanisms that depend on the soliton location. We corroborate our analytical results with numerical computations.

Nonlinear Waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Physical Relevance and Mathematical Techniques

The aim of the present review is to introduce the reader to some of the physical notions and of the mathematical methods that are relevant to the study of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). Upon introducing the general framework, we discuss the prototypical models that are relevant to this setting for different dimensions and different potentials confining the atoms. We analyze some of the model properties and explore their typical wave solutions (plane wave solutions, bright, dark, gap solitons, as well as vortices). We then offer a collection of mathematical methods that can be used to understand the existence, stability and dynamics of nonlinear waves in such BECs, either directly or starting from different types of limits (e.g., the linear or the nonlinear limit, or the discrete limit of the corresponding equation). Finally, we consider some special topics involving more recent developments, and experimental setups in which there is still considerable need for developing mathematical as well as computational tools.

Dipole and quadrupole solitons in optically-induced two-dimensional defocusing photonic lattices

Dipole and quadrupole solitons in a two-dimensional optically induced defocus- ing photonic lattice are theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. It is shown that in-phase nearest-neighbor dipole and out-of-phase next-nearest-neighbor dipoles exist and can be stable in the intermediate intensity regime. The other types of dipoles are always unstable. In-phase nearest-neighbor quadrupoles are also numerically obtained, and may also be linearly stable. Out-of-phase, nearest-neighbor quadrupoles are found to be typically unstable. These numerical results are found to be aligned with the main predictions obtained analytically in the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger model. Finally, experimental results are presented for both dipole and quadrupole structures, indicating that self-trapping of such structures in the defocusing lattice can be realized for the length of the nonlinear crystal (10 mm).

Solitons and vortices in honeycomb defocusing photonic lattices

Solitons and necklaces in the first band-gap of a two-dimensional optically induced honeycomb defocusing photonic lattice are theoretically considered. It is shown that dipoles, soliton necklaces, and vortex necklaces exist and may possess regions of stable propagation through a photorefractive crystal. Most of the configurations disappear in bifurcations close to the upper edge of the first band. Solutions associated with such bifurcations are also numerically examined, and it is found that they are often asymmetric and more exotic. The dynamics of the relevant unstable structures are also examined through direct numerical simulations revealing either breathing oscillations or, in some cases, destruction of the original waveform.

Structure and stability of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates under both harmonic and lattice confinement

In this work, we study pancake-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates confined by both a cylindrically symmetric harmonic potential and an optical lattice with equal periodicity in two orthogonal directions. We first identify the spectrum of the underlying two-dimensional linear problem through multiple-scale techniques. Then, we use the results obtained in the linear limit as a starting point for a nonlinear existence and stability analysis of the lowest energy states, emanating from the linear ones, in the nonlinear problem. Two-parameter continuations of these states are performed for increasing nonlinearity and optical lattice strengths, and their instabilities and temporal evolution are investigated. It is found that the ground state as well as one of the excited states are either stable or weakly unstable for both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions.

Rabi switch of condensate wavefunctions in a multicomponent Bose gas

Using a time-dependent linear (Rabi) coupling between the components of a weakly interacting multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), we propose a protocol for transferring the wavefunction of one component to the other. This "Rabi switch" can be generated in a binary BEC mixture by an electromagnetic field between the two components, typically two hyperfine states. When the wavefunction to be transfered is - at a given time - a stationary state of the multicomponent Hamiltonian, then, after a time delay (depending on the Rabi frequency), it is possible to have the same wavefunction on the other condensate. The Rabi switch can be used to transfer also moving bright matter-wave solitons, as well as vortices and vortex lattices in two-dimensional condensates. The efficiency of the proposed switch is shown to be 100% when inter-species and intra-species interaction strengths are equal. The deviations from equal interaction strengths are analyzed within a two-mode model and the dependence of the efficiency on the interaction strengths and on the presence of external potentials is examined in both 1D and 2D settings.

Two-Component Nonlinear Schrodinger Models with a Double-Well Potential

We introduce a model motivated by studies of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in double-well potentials. We assume that a mixture of two hyperfine states of the same atomic species is loaded in such a trap. The analysis is focused on symmetry-breaking bifurcations in the system, starting at the linear limit and gradually increasing the nonlinearity. Depending on values of the chemical potentials of the two species, we find numerous states, as well as symmetry-breaking bifurcations, in addition to those known in the single-component setting. These branches, which include all relevant stationary solutions of the problem, are predicted analytically by means of a two-mode approximation, and confirmed numerically. For unstable branches, outcomes of the instability development are explored in direct simulations.

Multistable Solitons in Higher-Dimensional Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schroedinger Lattices

We study the existence, stability, and mobility of fundamental discrete solitons in two- and three-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger lattices with a combination of cubic self-focusing and quintic self-defocusing onsite nonlinearities. Several species of stationary solutions are constructed, and bifurcations linking their families are investigated using parameter continuation starting from the anti-continuum limit, and also with the help of a variational approximation. In particular, a species of hybrid solitons, intermediate between the site- and bond-centered types of the localized states (with no counterpart in the 1D model), is analyzed in 2D and 3D lattices. We also discuss the mobility of multi-dimensional discrete solitons that can be set in motion by lending them kinetic energy exceeding the appropriately crafted Peierls-Nabarro barrier; however, they eventually come to a halt, due to radiation loss.

Stability of Quantized Vortices in a Bose-Einstein Condensate Confined in an Optical Lattice

We investigate the existence and especially the linear stability of single and multiple-charge quantized vortex states of nonlinear Schroedinger equations in the presence of a periodic and a parabolic potential in two spatial dimensions. The study is motivated by the examination of pancake-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of magnetic and optical confiement. A two-parameter space of the condensate's chemical potential versus the periodic potential's strength is scanned for both single- and double-quantized vortex states located at a local minimum or a local maximum of the lattice. Triply charged vortices are also briefly discussed. Single-charged vortices are found to be stable for cosinusoidal potentials and unstable for sinusoidal ones above a critical strength. Higher charge vortices are more unstable for both types of potentials and their dynamical evolution leads to breakup into single-charged vortices.

Averaging of Nonlinearity Management with Dissipation

Motivated by recent experiments in optics and atomic physics, we derive an averaged nonlinear partial differential equation describing the dynamics of the complex field in a nonlinear Schroedinger model in the presence of a periodic nonlinearity and a periodically-varying dissipation coefficient. The incorporation of dissipation is motivated by experimental considerations. We test the numerical behavior of the derived averaged equation by comparing it to the original nonautonomous model in a prototypical case scenario and observe good agreement between the two.

On the Emergence of Unstable Modes in an Expanding Domain for Energy-Conserving Wave Equations

Motivated by recent work on instabilities in expanding domains in reaction-diffusion settings, we propose an analog of such mechanisms in energy-conserving wave equations. In particular, we consider a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation in a finite domain and show how the expansion or contraction of the domain, under appropriate conditions, can destabilize its originally stable solutions through the modulational instability mechanism. Using both real and Fourier spacediagnostics, we monitor and control the crossing of the instability threshold and, hence, the activation of the instability. We also consider how the manifestation of this mechanism is modified in a spatially inhomogeneous setting, namely in the presence of an external parabolic potential, which is relevant to trapped Bose-Einstein condensates.

Stability of discrete dark solitons in nonlinear Schrodinger lattices

We obtain new results on the stability of discrete dark solitons bifurcating from the anti-continuum limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, following the analysis of our previous paper [Physica D 212, 1-19 (2005)]. We derive a criterion for stability or instability of dark solitons from the limiting configuration of the discrete dark soliton and confirm this criterion numerically. We also develop detailed calculations of the relevant eigenvalues for a number of prototypical configurations and obtain very good agreement of asymptotic predictions with the numerical data.
