Magnetic, thermal and transport properties of Cd doped CeIn$_3$

We have investigated the effect of Cd substitution on the archetypal heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeIn$_3$ via magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity measurements. The suppression of the Neel temperature, T$_{N}$, with Cd doping is more pronounced than with Sn. Nevertheless, a doping induced quantum critical point does not appear to be achievable in this system. The magnetic entropy at $T_N$ and the temperature of the maximum in resistivity are also systematically suppressed with Cd, while the effective moment and the Curie-Weiss temperature in the paramagnetic state are not affected. These results suggest that Cd locally disrupts the AFM order on its neighboring Ce moments, without affecting the valence of Ce. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the specific heat below $T_N$ is not consistent with 3D magnons in pure as well as in Cd-doped CeIn$_3$, a point that has been missed in previous investigations of CeIn$_3$ and that has bearing on the type of quantum criticality in this system.

Coexisting on- and off-center Yb3+ sites in Ce1-xYbxFe4P12 skutterudites

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements performed on the filled skutterudite system Ce1-x$YbxFe4P12 (x< 0.003) unequivocally reveal the coexistence of two Yb3+ resonances, associated with sites of considerably different occupations and temperature behaviors. Detailed analysis of the ESR data suggests a scenario where the fraction of oversized (Fe2P3)4 cages that host Yb ions are filled with a low occupation of on-center Yb3+ sites and a highly occupied T-dependent distribution of off-center Yb3+ sites. Analysis of the 171Yb3+ (I=1/2) isotope hyperfine splittings reveal that these two sites are associated with a low (~ 1 GHz) and a high (> 15 GHz) rattling frequency, respectively. Our findings introduce Yb3+ in Th symmetry systems and uses the Yb3+ ESR as a sensitive microscopic probe to investigate the Yb3+ ions dynamics.

Gd3+ rattling triggered by a "weak" M-I transition at 140-160 K in the Ce1-xGdxFe4$P12 x ~ 0.001 skutterudite compounds: an ESR study

In this work we report electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the semiconducting Ce1-xGdxFe4P12 (x ~ 0.001) filled skutterudite compounds. Investigation of the temperature (T) dependence of the ESR spectra and relaxation process suggests, that in the T-interval of 140-160 K, the onset of a "weak" metal-insulator (M-I) transition takes place due to the increasing density of thermally activated carriers across the semiconducting gap of ~ 1500 K. In addition, the observed low-T fine and hyperfine structures start to collapse at ~ 140 K and is completely absent for > 160 K. We claim that the increasing carrier density is able to trigger the rattling of the Gd3+ ions which in turn is responsible, via a motional narrowing mechanism, for the collapse of the ESR spectra.

Cd-doping effects in Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) heavy fermion compounds

Low temperature magnetic properties of Cd-doped Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) single crystals are investigated. Experiments of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that Cd-doping enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature from TN = 2.8 K (x = 0) to TN = 4.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2RhIn8-xCdx and induces long range AFM ordering with TN = 3.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2IrIn8-xCdx. Additionally, X-ray and neutron magnetic scattering studies showed that Cd-doped samples present below TN a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector (1/2,1/2,0). The resolved magnetic structures for both compounds indicate that the Cd-doping tends to rotate the direction of the ordered magnetic moments toward the ab-plane. This result suggests that the Cd-doping affects the Ce3+ ground state single ion anisotropy modifying the crystalline electrical field (CEF) parameters at the Ce3+ site. Indications of CEF evolution induced by Cd-doping were also found in the electrical resistivity measurements. Comparisons between our results and the general effects of Cd-doping on the related compounds CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh and Ir) confirms the claims that the Cd-doping induced electronic tuning is the main effect favoring AFM ordering in these compounds.

Evidence for the existence of Kondo coupled resonant modes in heavy fermions

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) can microscopically probe both conduction electrons (ce) and local moment (LM) spin systems in different materials. A ce spin resonance (CESR) is observed in metallic systems based on light elements or with enhanced Pauli susceptibility. LM ESR is frequently seen in compounds with paramagnetic ions and localized d or f electrons. Here we report a remarkable and unprecedented ESR signal in the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor beta-YbAlB4[1] which behaves as a CESR at high temperatures and acquires characteristics of the Yb3+ LM ESR at low temperature. This dual behavior in same ESR spectra strikes as an in situ unique observation of the Kondo quasiparticles giving rise to a new ESR response called Kondo coupled resonant mode (KCRM). The proximity to a quantum critical point (QCP) may favor the observation of a KCRM and its dual character in beta-YbAlB4 may unveil the 4f-electrons nature at the QCP.

Direct determination of the crystal field parameters of Dy, Er and Yb impurities in the skutterudite compound CeFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ by Electron Spin Resonance

Despite extensive research on the skutterudites for the last decade, their electric crystalline field ground state is still a matter of controversy. We show that Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements can determine the full set of crystal field parameters (CFPs) for the Th cubic symmetry (Im3) of the Ce$_{1-x}$R$_{x}$Fe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ (R = Dy, Er, Yb, $x\lesssim 0.003$) skutterudite compounds. From the analysis of the ESR data the three CFPs, B4c, B6c and B6t were determined for each of these rare-earths at the Ce$^{3+}$ site. The field and temperature dependence of the measured magnetization for the doped crystals are in excellent agreement with the one predicted by the CFPs Bnm derived from ESR.

La-dilution effects in TbRhIn5 antiferromagnet

We report measurements of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (XRMS) and heat capacity on single crystals of Tb1-xLaxRhIn5 for nominal concentrations in the range 0.0 < x < 1.0. TbRhIn5 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with TN ~ 46 K, which is the highest TN values along the RRhIn5 series. We explore the suppression of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state as a function of La-doping considering the effects of La-induced dilution and perturbations to the tetragonal crystalline electrical field (CEF) on the long range magnetic interaction between the Tb$^{3+}$ ions. Additionally, we also discuss the role of disorder. Our results and analysis are compared to the properties of the undoped compound and of other members of the RRhIn5 family and structurally related compounds (R2RhIn8 and RIn3). The XRMS measurements reveal that the commensurate magnetic structure with the magnetic wave-vector (0,1/2,1/2) observed for the undoped compound is robust against doping perturbations in Tb0.6La0.4RhIn5 compound.

Magnetic structure of Sm2IrIn8

The magnetic structure of the intermetallic antiferromagnet Sm2IrIn8 was determined using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Below TN = 14.2, Sm2IrIn8 has a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector (1/2,0,0). The Sm magnetic moments lie in the ab plane and are rotated roughly 18 degrees away from the a axis. The magnetic structure of this compound was obtained by measuring the strong dipolar resonant peak whose enhancement was of over two orders of magnitude at the L2 edge. At the L3 edge both quadrupolar and dipolar features were observed in the energy line shape. The magnetic structure and properties of Sm2IrIn8 are found to be consistent with the general trend already seen for the Nd-, Tb- and the Ce-based compounds from the RmMnIn3m+2n family (R = rare earth; M=Rh or Ir, m = 1, 2; n = 0, 1), where the crystalline electrical field (CEF) effects determine the direction of magnetic moments and the TN evolution in the series. The measured Neel temperature for Sm2IrIn8 is slightly suppressed when compared to the TN of the parent cubic compound SmIn3.

FFLO State and Peak Effect Dynamics in CeCoIn_5: Magnetization Studies

Magnetization measurements were performed on CeCoIn_5 at temperature down to 30 mK with the magnetic field applied in three different orientations: parallel, near parallel ($\sim$ 10$^{0}$ rotated) and perpendicular to the ab-plane. For these three orientations we have observed crossover features in the torque/magnetization traces at fields just below $H_{c2}$, giving further evidence for the formation of a high field Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state in CeCoIn_5 for $H \parallel ab$-plane and newly indicates that the FFLO state persists for out-of-plane field orientations. Furthermore, for the (near) parallel to $ab$-plane field configurations and $T\leq \mathrm{50 mK}$, we have found an anomalous peak effect(APE) just below the crossover field when the magnetic field is sweeping down from normal to superconducting state. The dynamics of this peak suggests the existence of a metastable phase occurring in the vicinity of the FFLO phase and raises questions about the order (first or second) of the transition from FFLO to the superconducting state. None of the above features were found in a Ce_{0.98}Gd_{0.02}CoIn_{5} crystal.

Magnetic structure and critical behavior of GdRhIn$_{5}$: resonant x-ray diffraction and renormalization group analysis

The magnetic structure and fluctuations of tetragonal GdRhIn5 were studied by resonant x-ray diffraction at the Gd LII and LIII edges, followed by a renormalization group analysis for this and other related Gd-based compounds, namely Gd2IrIn8 and GdIn3. These compounds are spin-only analogs of the isostructural Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors. The ground state of GdRhIn5 shows a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin structure with propagation vector tau = (0,1/2, 1/2), corresponding to a parallel spin alignment along the a-direction and antiparallel alignment along b and c. A comparison between this magnetic structure and those of other members of the Rm(Co,Rh,Ir)n In3m+2n family (R =rare earth, n = 0, 1; m = 1, 2) indicates that, in general, tau is determined by a competition between first-(J1) and second-neighbor(J2) antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions. While a large J1 /J2 ratio favors an antiparallel alignment along the three directions (the so-called G-AFM structure), a smaller ratio favors the magnetic structure of GdRhIn5 (C-AFM). In particular, it is inferred that the heavy-fermion superconductor CeRhIn5 is in a frontier between these two ground states, which may explain its non-collinear spiral magnetic structure. The critical behavior of GdRhIn5 close to the paramagnetic transition at TN = 39 K was also studied in detail. A typical second-order transition with the ordered magnetization critical parameter beta = 0.35 was experimentally found, and theoretically investigated by means of a renormalization group analysis.

Physical properties and magnetic structure of TbRhIn5 intermetallic compound

In this work we report the physical properties of the new intermetallic compound TbRhIn5 investigated by means of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction experiments. TbRhIn5 is an intermetallic compound that orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 45.5 K, the highest ordering temperature among the existing RRhIn5 (1-1-5, R = rare earth) materials. This result is in contrast to what is expected from a de Gennes scaling along the RRhIn5 series. The X-ray resonant diffraction data below TN reveal a commensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with a propagation vector (1/2 0 1/2) and the Tb moments oriented along the c-axis. Strong (over two order of magnitude) dipolar enhancements of the magnetic Bragg peaks were observed at both Tb absorption edges LII and LIII, indicating a fairly high polarization of the Tb 5d levels. Using a mean field model including an isotropic first-neighbors exchange interaction J(R-R) and the tetragonal crystalline electrical field (CEF), we were able to fit our experimental data and to explain the direction of the ordered Tb-moments and the enhanced TN of this compound. The evolution of the magnetic properties along the RRhIn5 series and its relation to CEF effects for a given rare-earth is discussed.

Novel Coexistence of Superconductivity with Two Distinct Magnetic Orders

The heavy fermion Ce(Rh,Ir)In5 system exhibits properties that range from an incommensurate antiferromagnet on the Rh-rich end to an exotic superconductor on the Ir-rich end of the phase diagram. At intermediate composition where antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity, two types of magnetic order are observed: the incommensurate one of CeRhIn5 and a new, commensurate antiferromagnetism that orders separately. The coexistence of f-electron superconductivity with two distinct f-electron magnetic orders is unique among unconventional superconductors, adding a new variety to the usual coexistence found in magnetic superconductors.

Crystal-field effects in the mixed-valence compounds Yb2M3Ga9 (M= Rh, Ir)

Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements have been carried out on single crystals of the intermediate valence compounds Yb2Rh3Ga9 and Yb2Ir3Ga9. These measurements reveal a large anisotropy due apparently to an interplay between crystalline electric field (CEF) and Kondo effects. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility can be modelled using the Anderson impurity model including CEF within an approach based on the Non-Crossing Approximation.

Gradual transition from insulator to semimetal of Ca$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$B$_{6}$ with increasing Eu concentration

The local environment of Eu$^{2+}$ ($4f^{7}$, $S=7/2$) in Ca$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$B$_{6}$ ($0.003\leqslant x\leqslant 1.00$) is investigated by means of electron spin resonance (ESR). For $x\lesssim 0.003$ the spectra show resolved \textit{fine} and \textit{hyperfine} structures due to the cubic crystal \textit{electric} field and nuclear \textit{hyperfine} field, respectively. The resonances have Lorentzian line shape, indicating an \textit{insulating} environment for the Eu$^{2+}$ ions. For $0.003\lesssim x\lesssim 0.07$, as $x$ increases, the ESR lines broaden due to local distortions caused by the Eu/Ca ions substitution. For $0.07\lesssim x\lesssim 0.30$, the lines broaden further and the spectra gradually change from Lorentzian to Dysonian resonances, suggesting a coexistence of both \textit{insulating} and \textit{metallic} environments for the Eu$^{2+}$ ions. In contrast to Ca$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$, the \textit{fine} structure is still observable up to $x\approx 0.15$. For $x\gtrsim 0.30 $ the \textit{fine} and \textit{hyperfine} structures are no longer observed, the line width increases, and the line shape is purely Dysonian anticipating the \textit{semimetallic} character of EuB$_{6}$. This broadening is attributed to a spin-flip scattering relaxation process due to the exchange interaction between conduction and Eu$^{2+}$ $4f$ electrons. High field ESR measurements for $x\gtrsim 0.15$ reveal smaller and anisotropic line widths, which are attributed to magnetic polarons and Fermi surface effects, respectively.

Field-Tuned Quantum Critical Point in CeCoIn$_5$ Near the Superconducting Upper Critical Field

We report a systematic study of high magnetic field specific heat and resistivity in single crystals of CeCoIn_5 for the field oriented in the basal plane (H//ab) of this tetragonal heavy fermion superconductor. We observe a divergent electronic specific heat as well as an enhanced A coefficient of the T^{2} law in resistivity at the lowest temperatures, as the field approaches the upper critical field of the superconducting transition. Together with the results for field along the tetragonal axis (H//c), the emergent picture is that of a magnetic field tuned quantum critical point which exists in the vicinity of the superconducting H_{c2} despite a variation of a factor of 2.4 in H_{c2} for different field orientations. This suggests an underlying physical reason exists for the superconducting H_{c2} to coincide with the quantum critical field. Moreover, we show that the recovery of a Fermi Liquid ground state with increasing magnetic field is more gradual, meaning that the fluctuations responsible for the observed quantum critical phenomena are more robust with respect to magnetic field, when the magnetic field is applied in-plane. Together with the close proximity of the quantum critical point and H_{c2} in CeCoIn_5 for both field orientation, the anisotropy in the recovery of the Fermi liquid state might constitute an important piece of information in identifying the nature of the fluctuations that become critical.

Role of the E2g phonon in the superconductivity of MgB2: a Raman scattering study

Temperature dependent Raman scattering studies in polycrystalline MgB2(10<T<300 K)reveal that the E2g phonon does not experience any self energy renormalization effect across the superconducting critical temperature Tc ~ 40 K. In contrast, most of the current theoretical models rely on the role of the E2g phonon in the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity in MgB2. According to these models, a hardening of 12% is expected below Tc at the Gamma point of the Brillouim zone. In the presence of our results, those models must be reviewed. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the E2g phonon frequency yields to a isobaric Gruneisen parameter of -1.2< gama(E2g)< 0.2, smaller than the value of 3.9 obtained from isothermal Raman experiments under pressure. It is suggested that this apparent disagreement can be explained in terms of pressure induced changes of the topology of the Fermi surface. Finally we notice that the phonon linewidth presents the expected two-phonon anharmonic decay as a function of T and no anomalous temperature dependence of the linewidth is observed near Tc.

Solid state Pomeranchuk effect

Recently we have shown that $YbInCu_4$ and related compounds present a solid state Pomeranchuk effect. These systems have a first order volume transition where a local moment phase coexists with a renormalized Fermi liquid in analogy with $^3He$ at its melting curve. We demonstrate here experimentally that the solid state Pomeranchuk effect, controlled by a magnetic field, can be used to produce cooling.

Coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and unconventional superconductivity in heavy fermion compounds CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5: nuclear quadrupole resonance studies

We present a systematic ^{115}In NQR study on the heavy fermion compounds CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5 (x=0.25, 0.35, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55 and 0.75). The results provide strong evidence for the microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity (SC) in the range of 0.35 \leq x \leq 0.55. Specifically, for x=0.5, T_N is observed at 3 K with a subsequent onset of superconductivity at T_c=0.9 K. T_c reaches a maximum (0.94 K) at x=0.45 where T_N is found to be the highest (4.0 K). Detailed analysis of the measured spectra indicate that the same electrons participate in both SC and AF order. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows a broad peak at T_N and follows a T^3 variation below T_c, the latter property indicating unconventional SC as in CeIrIn_5 (T_c=0.4 K). We further find that, in the coexistence region, the T^3 dependence of 1/T_1 is replaced by a T-linear variation below T\sim 0.4 K, with the value \frac{(T_1)_{T_c}}{(T_1)_{low-T}} increasing with decreasing x, likely due to low-lying magnetic excitations associated with the coexisting magnetism.
