Collinear Laser Spectroscopy on a Fast Atomic Beam of Boron Generated by Photodetachment of Accelerated B- Ions

Atomic beams for collinear laser spectroscopy are typically produced via charge exchange reactions in an in-beam vapor cell. This process is accompanied by the formation of a considerable amount of longer-lived excited state population, which is not accessible for spectroscopy and also induces fluorescence background to photon detectors. We present an alternative method to produce an atomic beam, consisting exclusively of ground-state atoms. Negative ions are neutralized in-flight by photodetachment and are subsequently used for fluorescence spectroscopy. As a test candidate, a negative boron ion beam was produced in a cesium sputtering source and superimposed with a co-propagating high-power pulsed infrared laser. The neutral atoms were subsequently excited along the $2s^2 2p\,{}^{2\!}P_{1/2,3/2} \rightarrow 2s^2 3s\,{}^{2\!}S_{1/2}$ transitions by a continuous-wave laser at about 250 nm. The statistics and efficiency were limited by the combination of a continuous ion beam with a low-repetition-rate laser, but a clear route for the improvement combining existing techniques is presented, which can then be applied to other elements as well as negative molecular ions.

Nuclear Charge Radii of Sr Isotopes: Reevaluation based on Transition Frequency Measurements in the $5s-5p-4d$ manifold in Sr$^+$

High-precision quasi-simultaneous collinear and anticollinear laser spectroscopy was performed on the $5s\,^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 5p\,^2P_{1/2}$ (D1), $5s\,^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 5p\,^2P_{3/2}$ (D2), and three $4d\rightarrow 5p$ transitions in the naturally abundant Sr$^+$ isotopes. Absolute transition frequencies were determined with uncertainties as low as $600$ kHz, while common-mode rejection enabled the extraction of isotope shifts with uncertainties down to $200$ kHz, one order of magnitude smaller than previously achieved. The uncertainties of the hyperfine-structure constants of the $5p$ states and the $4d\,^2D_{3/2}$ state in $^{87}$Sr were also improved. A King-plot analysis yielded a field-shift ratio of the D2 and D1 lines of $F_{\mathrm{D2}}/F_{\mathrm{D1}}=1.004(5)$, which lies within the theoretically allowed region and provides a benchmark for atomic-structure calculations. Using data from all stable isotopes and investigated transitions, we compare field- and mass-shift constants obtained using several established approaches, ranging from King plots based entirely on experimental input to state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} atomic-structure calculations. We show that, above $N=50$, the extracted charge radii depend strongly on the approach used.

Binding energies, charge radii, spins and moments: odd-odd Ag isotopes and discovery of a new isomer

We report on the masses and hyperfine structure of ground and isomeric states in $^{114,116,118,120}$Ag isotopes, measured with the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique (PI-ICR) with the JYFLTRAP mass spectrometer and the collinear laser spectroscopy beamline at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility, Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland. We measured the masses and excitation energies, electromagnetic moments, and charge radii, and firmly established the nuclear spins of the long-lived states. A new isomer was discovered in $^{118}$Ag and the half-lives of $^{118}$Ag long-lived states were reevaluated. We unambiguously pinned down the level ordering of all long-lived states, placing the inversion of the $I = 0^-$ and $I = 4^+$ states at $A = 118$ $(N = 71)$. Lastly, we compared the electromagnetic moments of each state to empirical single-particle moments to identify the dominant configuration where possible.

A Setup to Study Atomic State Population Dynamics and Optical Polarization at CRYRING@ESR

We present a recently established setup for laser spectroscopy at CRYRING@ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Here, laser spectroscopy can be performed on stored and cooled ion bunches and coasting beams. First spectra of $^{24,25}$Mg$^+$ ions are presented that were recorded by classical Doppler-limited fluorescence spectroscopy as well as $\Lambda$-spectroscopy using counter- and copropagating laser beams that are Doppler-shifted by several nm.

Radiative lifetime of the A 2{\Pi}1/2 state in RaF with relevance to laser cooling

The radiative lifetime of the $A$ $^2 \Pi_{1/2}$ (v=0) state in radium monofluoride (RaF) is measured to be 35(1) ns. The lifetime of this state and the related decay rate $\Gamma = 2.86(8) \times 10^7$ $s^{-1}$ are of relevance to the laser cooling of RaF via the optically closed $A$ $^2 \Pi_{1/2} \leftarrow X$ $^2\Sigma_{1/2}$ transition, which makes the molecule a promising probe to search for new physics. RaF is found to have a comparable photon-scattering rate to homoelectronic laser-coolable molecules. Thanks to its highly diagonal Franck-Condon matrix, it is expected to scatter an order of magnitude more photons than other molecules when using just 3 cooling lasers, before it decays to a dark state. The lifetime measurement in RaF is benchmarked by measuring the lifetime of the $8P_{3/2}$ state in Fr to be 83(3) ns, in agreement with literature.

Isomeric states of fission fragments explored via Penning trap mass spectrometry at IGISOL

The masses of $^{84}$Br, $^{105}$Mo, $^{115,119,121}$Pd, $^{122}$Ag, $^{127,129}$In, $^{132}$Sb and their respective isomeric states have been measured with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer using the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique. The excitation energies of the isomeric states in $^{132}$Sb and $^{119}$Pd were experimentally determined for the first time, while for $^{84}$Br, $^{115}$Pd and $^{127,129}$In, the precision of the mass values was substantially improved. In $^{105}$Mo and $^{121}$Pd there were no signs of a long-lived isomeric state. The ground-state measurements of $^{119}$Pd and $^{122}$Ag indicated that both are significantly more bound than the literature values. For $^{122}$Ag, there was no indication of a proposed third long-lived state. The results for the $N=49$ nucleus $^{84}$Br and isomers close to doubly magic $^{132}$Sn have been compared to the shell-model and the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model calculations.

Electromagnetic moments of the antimony isotopes $^{112-133}$Sb

Nuclear moments of the antimony isotopes $^{113-133}$Sb are measured by collinear laser spectroscopy and used to benchmark phenomenological shell-model and \textit{ab initio} calculations in the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG). The shell-model calculations reproduce the electromagnetic moments over all Sb isotopes when suitable effective $g$-factors and charges are employed. Good agreement is achieved by VS-IMSRG for magnetic moments on the neutron-deficient side for both odd-even and odd-odd Sb isotopes while its results deviate from experiment on the neutron-rich side. When the same effective $g$-factors are used, VS-IMSRG agrees with experiment nearly as well as the shell model. Hence, the wave functions are very similar in both approaches and missing contributions to the M1 operator are identified as the cause of the discrepancy of VS-IMSRG with experiment. Electric quadrupole moments remain more challenging for VS-IMSRG.

Nuclear charge radius of $^{26m}$Al and its implication for V$_{ud}$ in the quark-mixing matrix

Collinear laser spectroscopy was performed on the isomer of the aluminium isotope $^{26m}$Al. The measured isotope shift to $^{27}$Al in the $3s^{2}3p\;^{2}\!P^\circ_{3/2} \rightarrow 3s^{2}4s\;^{2}\!S_{1/2}$ atomic transition enabled the first experimental determination of the nuclear charge radius of $^{26m}$Al, resulting in $R_c$=\qty{3.130\pm.015}{\femto\meter}. This differs by 4.5 standard deviations from the extrapolated value used to calculate the isospin-symmetry breaking corrections in the superallowed $\beta$ decay of $^{26m}$Al. Its corrected $\mathcal{F}t$ value, important for the estimation of $V_{ud}$ in the CKM matrix, is thus shifted by one standard deviation to \qty{3071.4\pm1.0}{\second}.

Pinning down electron correlations in RaF via spectroscopy of excited states and high-accuracy relativistic quantum chemistry

We report the spectroscopy of the 14 lowest excited electronic states in the radioactive molecule radium monofluoride (RaF). The observed excitation energies are compared with fully relativistic state-of-the-art Fock-space coupled cluster (FS-RCC) calculations, which achieve an agreement of >=99.64% (within ~12 meV) with experiment for all states. Guided by theory, a firm assignment of the angular momentum and term symbol is made for 10 states and a tentative assignment for 4 states. The role of high-order electron correlation and quantum electrodynamics effects in the excitation energy of excited states is studied, found to be important for all states. Establishing the simultaneous accuracy and precision of calculations is an important step for research at the intersection of particle, nuclear, and chemical physics, including searches of physics beyond the Standard Model, for which RaF is a promising probe.

Charge radii of $^{55,56}$Ni reveal a surprisingly similar behavior at $N=28$ in Ca and Ni isotopes

Nuclear charge radii of $^{55,56}$Ni were measured by collinear laser spectroscopy. The obtained information completes the behavior of the charge radii at the shell closure of the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. The trend of charge radii across the shell closures in calcium and nickel is surprisingly similar despite the fact that the $^{56}$Ni core is supposed to be much softer than the $^{48}$Ca core. The very low magnetic moment $\mu(^{55}\mathrm{Ni})=-1.108(20)\,\mu_N$ indicates the impact of M1 excitations between spin-orbit partners across the $N,Z=28$ shell gaps. Our charge-radii results are compared to \textit{ab initio} and nuclear density functional theory calculations, showing good agreement within theoretical uncertainties.
