Local electronic structure near oxygen dopants in BSCCO-2212: a window on the high-Tc pair mechanism?

The cuprate material BSCCO-2212 is believed to be doped by a combination of cation switching and excess oxygen. The interstitial oxygen dopants are of particular interest because scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments have shown that they are positively correlated with the local value of the superconducting gap, and calculations suggest that the fundamental attraction between electrons is modulated locally. In this work, we use density functional theory to try to ascertain which locations in the crystal are energetically most favorable for the O dopant atoms, and how the surrounding cage of atoms deforms. Our results provide support for the identification of STM resonances at -1eV with dopant interstitial O atoms, and show how the local electronic structure is modified nearby.

Nodal Quasiparticle Lifetimes in Cuprate Superconductors

A new generation of angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on the cuprate superconductors offer the promise of enhanced momentum and energy resolution. In particular, the energy and temperature dependence of the on-shell nodal (k_x=k_y) quasiparticle scattering rate can be studied. In the superconducting state, low temperature transport measurements suggest that one can describe nodal quasiparticles within the framework of a BCS d-wave model by including forward elastic scattering and spin-fluctuation inelastic scattering. Here, using this model, we calculate the temperature and frequency dependence of the on-shell nodal quasiparticle scattering rate in the superconducting state which determines the momentum width of the ARPES momentum distribution curves. For a zero-energy quasiparticle at the nodal momentum k_N, both the elastic and inelastic scattering rate show a sudden decrease as the temperature drops below Tc, reflecting the onset of the gap amplitude. At low temperatures the scattering rate decreases as T^3 and approaches a zero temperature value determined by the elastic impurity scattering. For T>T_c, we find a quasilinear dependence on T. At low reduced temperatures, the elastic scattering rate for the nodal quasiparticles exhibits a quasilinear increase at low energy which arises from elastic scattering processes. The inelastic spin-fluctuation scattering leads to a low energy omega^3 dependence which, for omega>~Delta_0, crosses over to a quasilinear behavior.

Superconducting Junctions with Ferromagnetic, Antiferromagnetic or Charge-Density-Wave Interlayers

Spectra and spin structures of Andreev interface states and the Josephson current are investigated theoretically in junctions between clean superconductors (SC) with ordered interlayers. The Josephson current through the ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet interlayer can exhibit a nonmonotonic dependence on the misorientation angle. The characteristic behavior takes place if the pi state is the equilibrium state of the junction in the particular case of parallel magnetizations. We find a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection (Q reflection) from the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet (AF) on a bipartite lattice. As a combined effect of Andreev and Q reflections, Andreev states arise at the AF/SC interface. When the Q reflection dominates the specular one, Andreev bound states have almost zero energy on AF/ s-wave SC interfaces, whereas they lie near the edge of the continuous spectrum for AF/d-wave SC boundaries. For an s-wave SC/AF/s-wave SC junction, the bound states are found to split and carry the supercurrent. Our analytical results are based on a novel quasiclassical approach, which applies to interfaces involving itinerant antiferromagnets. Similar effects can take place on interfaces of superconductors with charge density wave materials (CDW), including the possible d-density wave state (DDW) of the cuprates.

0-pi transitions in Josephson junctions with antiferromagnetic interlayers

We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S/AF/S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0- or pi-junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi-0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bound states. Experimental implications of these theoretical findings are discussed.

Disorder effects on the intrinsic nonlinear current density in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We present harmonic generation measurements of the intrinsic nonlinear current density $j_2$ of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films at temperatures close the $T_c$. Experiments on a range of different quality samples allow us to extract the dependence of $j_2$ on the penetration depth of the superconductor. In order to model these results, we calculate the intrinsic nonlinear current response of $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors in the Meissner regime in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities within the self-consistent T-matrix approximation.

Fourier transform spectroscopy of d-wave quasiparticles in the presence of atomic scale pairing disorder

The local density of states power spectrum of optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (BSCCO) has been interpreted in terms of quasiparticle interference peaks corresponding to an "octet'' of scattering wave vectors connecting k-points where the density of states is maximal. Until now, theoretical treatments have not been able to reproduce the experimentally observed weights and widths of these "octet'' peaks; in particular, the predominance of the dispersing "q$_1$'' peak parallel to the Cu-O bond directions has remained a mystery. In addition, such theories predict "background'' features which are not observed experimentally. Here, we show that most of the discrepancies can be resolved when a realistic model for the out-of-plane disorder in BSCCO is used. Weak extended potential scatterers, which are assumed to represent cation disorder, suppress large-momentum features and broaden the low-energy "q$_7$''-peaks, whereas scattering at order parameter variations, possibly caused by a dopant-modulated pair interaction around interstitial oxygens, strongly enhances the dispersing "q$_1$''-peaks.

Bound states at the interface between antiferromagnets and superconductors

We present a detailed theoretical investigation of interfaces and junctions involving itinerant antiferromagnets. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with a tight-binding model on a square lattice, we study both the self-consistent order parameter fields proximate to interfaces between antiferromagnets (AF) and s-wave (sSC) or d-wave (dSC) superconductors, the dispersion of quasiparticle subgap states at interfaces and interlayers, and the local density of states (LDOS) as a function of distance from the interface. In addition, we present the quasiclassical approach to interfaces and junctions involving itinerant antiferromagnets developed in an earlier paper. Analytical results are in excellent agreement with what we obtain numerically. Strong effects of pair breaking in the presence of low-energy interface Andreev states are found in particular for AF/sSC interfaces when interface potentials are not too high. Potential barriers induce additional extrema in the dispersive quasiparticle spectra with corresponding peaks in the LDOS. Discrete quasiparticle dispersive levels in AF - normal metal (N) - AF systems are found to strongly depend on the misorientation angle of the magnetizations in the two antiferromagnets.

Andreev states near short-ranged pairing potential impurities

We study Andreev states near atomic scale modulations in the pairing potential in both $s$- and d-wave superconductors with short coherence lengths. For a moderate reduction of the local gap, the states exist only close to the gap edge. If one allows for local sign changes of the order parameter, however, resonances can occur at energies close to the Fermi level. The local density of states (LDOS) around such pairing potential defects strongly resembles the patterns observed by tunneling measurements around Zn impurities in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (BSCCO). We discuss how this phase impurity model of the Zn LDOS pattern can be distinguished from other proposals experimentally.

Ab Initio Calculation of Impurity Effects in Copper Oxide Materials

We describe a method for calculating, within density functional theory, the electronic structure associated with typical defects which substitute for Cu in the CuO2 planes of high-Tc superconducting materials. The focus is primarily on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, the material on which most STM measurements of impurity resonances in the superconducting state have been performed. The magnitudes of the effective potentials found for Zn, Ni and vacancies on the in-plane Cu sites in this host material are remarkably consistent with phenomenological fits of potential scattering models to STM resonance energies. The effective potential ranges are quite short, of order 1 A with weak long range tails, in contrast to some current models of extended potentials which attempt to fit STM data. For the case of Zn and Cu vacancies, the effective potentials are strongly repulsive, and states on the impurity site near the Fermi level are simply removed. The local density of states (LDOS) just above the impurity is nevertheless found to be a maximum in the case of Zn and a local minimum in case of the vacancy, in agreement with experiment. The Zn and Cu vacancy patterns are explained as due to the long-range tails of the effective impurity potential at the sample surface. The case of Ni is richer due to the Ni atom's strong hybridization with states near the Fermi level; in particular, the short range part of the potential is attractive, and the LDOS is found to vary rapidly with distance from the surface and from the impurity site. We propose that the current controversy surrounding the observed STM patterns can be resolved by properly accounting for the effective impurity potentials and wave-functions near the cuprate surface. Other aspects of the impurity states for all three species are discussed.

Dopant-modulated pair interaction in cuprate superconductors

Comparison of recent experimental STM data with single-impurity and many-impurity Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations strongly suggests that random out-of-plane dopant atoms in cuprates modulate the pair interaction locally. This type of disorder is crucial to understanding the nanoscale electronic structure inhomogeneity observed in BSCCO-2212, and can reproduce observed correlations between the positions of impurity atoms and various aspects of the local density of states such as the gap magnitude and the height of the coherence peaks. Our results imply that each dopant atom modulates the pair interaction on a length scale of order one lattice constant.

Anomaly at Delta_k in the ARPES spectrum of dirty superconductors

Elastic forward scattering can lead to an anomaly in the ARPES spectrum of the cuprate superconductors. Here we discuss how this anomaly can be used to provide a measurement of the superconducting gap Delta_k for k values away from the Fermi surface.

Electronic structure of d-wave superconducting quantum wires

We present analytical and numerical results for the electronic spectra of wires of a d-wave superconductor on a square lattice. The spectra of Andreev and other quasiparticle states, as well as the spatial and particle-hole structures of their wave functions, depend on interference effects caused by the presence of the surfaces and are qualitatively different for half-filled wires with even or odd number of chains. For half-filled wires with an odd number of chains N at (110) orientation, spectra consist of N doubly degenerate branches. By contrast, for even N wires, these levels are split, and all quasiparticle states, even the ones lying above the maximal gap, have the characteristic properties of Andreev bound states. These Andreev states above the gap can be interpreted as a consequence of an infinite sequence of Andreev reflections experienced by quasiparticles along their trajectories bounded by the surfaces of the wire. Our microscopic results for the local density of states display atomic-scale Friedel oscillations due to the presence of the surfaces, which should be observable by scanning tunneling microscopy. For narrow wires the self-consistent treatment of the order parameter is found to play a crucial role. In particular, we find that for small wire widths the finite geometry may drive strong fluctuations or even stablilize exotic quasi-1D pair states with spin triplet character.

Microwave conductivity of d-wave superconductors with extended impurities

We investigate the influence of extended scatterers on the finite temperature and finite frequency microwave conductivity of d-wave superconductors. For this purpose we generalize a previous treatment by Durst and Lee, which is based on a nodal approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scattering processes, and apply it to the analysis of experimental spectra of YBCO-123 and BSCCO-2212. For YBCO, we find that accounting for a slight spatial extension of the strong scattering in-plane defects improves the fit of the low temperature microwave conductivity to experiment. With respect to BSCCO we conclude that it is necessary to include a large concentration of weak-to-intermediate strength extended scatterers, which we attribute to the out-of plane disorder introduced by doping. These findings for BSCCO are consistent with similar analyses of the normal state ARPES spectra and of STM spectra in the superconducting state, where an enhanced forward scattering has been inferred as well.

Relating STM, ARPES, and Transport in the Cuprate Superconducting State

We discuss a wealth of data from various types of experiments which together suggest that the superconducting state of optimally to overdoped BSCCO-2212 can be well-described by the BCS theory with a d-wave gap together with small-angle scattering from out-of-plane defects. These include scanning tunnelling Fourier transform spectroscopy observation of nanoscale inhomogeneity in the local gap edge position, the narrowing of the antinodal ARPES spectrum when BSCCO becomes superconducting, as well as the behavior of the microwave and thermal conductivities. We suggest that the large amount of small-angle scattering in BSCCO can account for the differences between the superconducting properties of BSCCO and YBCO.

Spin-dependent quasiparticle reflection and bound states at interfaces with itinerant antiferromagnets

We present a formulation of the quasiclassical theory of junctions between itinerant antiferromagnets (AF) and s-wave (sSC) and d-wave superconductors (dSC). For the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet on a bipartite lattice, we derive Andreev-type equations and show that their solutions lead to a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection. In particular, quasiparticles in a normal metal with energies less than or comparable to the antiferromagnetic gap experience spin-dependent retroreflection at antiferromagnet-normal metal (AF/N) transparent (100) and (110) interfaces. A relative phase difference of pi between up spin and down spin quasiparticle reflection amplitudes is shown to lead to zero-energy interface bound states on AF/sSC interfaces. For an sSC/AF/sSC junction, these bound states are found to be split, due to a finite width of the AF interlayer, and carry the supercurrent. At AF/dSC interfaces we find no zero-energy bound states for both interface orientations we considered, in contrast with the case of (110) impenetrable surface of a dSC.

Elastic forward scattering in the cuprate superconducting state

We investigate the effect of elastic forward scattering on the ARPES spectrum of the cuprate superconductors. In the normal state, small angle scattering from out-of-plane impurities is thought to broaden the ARPES spectral response with minimal effect on the resistivity or the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. Here we explore how such forward scattering affects the ARPES spectrum in the d-wave superconducting state. Away from the nodal direction, the one-electron impurity scattering rate is found to be suppressed as $ω$ approaches the gap edge by a cancellation between normal and anomalous scattering processes, leading to a square-root-like feature in the spectral weight as $ω$ approaches $-Δ_\k$ from below. For momenta away from the Fermi surface, our analysis suggests that a dirty optimally or overdoped system will still display a sharp but nondispersive peak which could be confused with a quasiparticle spectral feature. Only in cleaner samples should the true dispersing quasiparticle peak become visible. At the nodal point on the Fermi surface, the contribution of the anomalous scattering vanishes and the spectral weight exhibits a Lorentzian quasiparticle peak in both energy and momentum. Our analysis, including a treatment of unitary scatterers and inelastic spin fluctuation scattering, suggests explanations for the sometimes mysterious lineshapes and temperature dependences of the peak structures observed in the \BSCCO system.

Half - h/2e - Oscillations of SQUIDs

The current-voltage characteristics of Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are known to modulate as a function of applied magnetic field with a period of one flux quantum $Φ_0=h$/2e. Here we report on the fabrication and properties of SQUIDs modulating with a period of $1/2\timesΦ_0$. The characteristics of these bicrystal SQUIDs are consistent with either a strong sin(2$ϕ$) component of the current-phase relation of the Josephson current, or with an interaction between the Cooper-pairs, causing an admixture of quartets to the condensate.

Relaxation of Hot Quasiparticles in a d-Wave Superconductor

Motivated by recent pump-probe experiments we consider the processes by which "hot" quasiparticles produced near the antinodes of a d-wave superconductor can relax. We show that in a large region of momentum space processes which break Cooper pairs are forbidden by energy and momentum conservation. Equilibration then occurs by scattering with thermal quasiparticles: Umklapp scattering is exponentially suppressed at low temperatures, but small-angle scattering leads to power-law behavior. By solving the Boltzmann equation analytically we make detailed predictions for the temperature and intensity dependence of these processes, which we compare with experiment.
