Power spectrum of many impurities in a d-wave superconductor

Recently the structure of the measured local density of states power spectrum of a small area of the \BSCCO (BSCCO) surface has been interpreted in terms of peaks at an "octet" of scattering wave vectors determined assuming weak, noninterfering scattering centers. Using analytical arguments and numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we discuss how the interference between many impurities in a d-wave superconductor alters this scenario. We propose that the peaks observed in the power spectrum are not the features identified in the simpler analyses, but rather "background" structures which disperse along with the octet vectors. We further consider how our results constrain the form of the actual disorder potential found in this material.

Two impurities in a d-wave superconductor:local density of states

We study the problem of two local potential scatterers in a d-wave superconductor, and show how quasiparticle bound state wave functions interfere. Each single-impurity electron and hole resonance energy is in general split in the presence of a second impurity into two, corresponding to one even parity and one odd parity state. We calculate the local density of states (LDOS), and argue that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements should be capable of extracting information about the Green's function in the pure system by a systematic study of 2-impurity configurations. In some configurations highly localized, long-lived states are predicted. We discuss the effects of realistic band structures, and how 2-impurity STM measurements could help distinguish between current explanations of LDOS impurity spectra in the BSCCO-2212 system.

Quantum interference in nested d-wave superconductors: a real-space perspective

We study the local density of states around potential scatterers in d-wave superconductors, and show that quantum interference between impurity states is not negligible for experimentally relevant impurity concentrations. The two impurity model is used as a paradigm to understand these effects analytically and in interpreting numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations on fully disordered systems. We focus primarily on the globally particle-hole symmetric model which has been the subject of considerable controversy, and give evidence that a zero-energy delta function exists in the DOS. The anomalous spectral weight at zero energy is seen to arise from resonant impurity states belonging to a particular sublattice, exactly as in the 2-impurity version of this model. We discuss the implications of these findings for realistic models of the cuprates.

Singular current response from isolated impurities in d-wave superconductors

The current response of a d-wave superconductor containing a single impurity is calculated and shown to be singular in the low-temperature limit, leading in the case of strong scattering to a 1/T term in the penetration depth $λ(T)$ similar to that induced by Andreev surface bound states. For a small number of such impurities, we argue this low-$T$ upturn could be observable in cuprate superconductors.

Optical and Thermal-Transport Properties of an Inhomogeneous d-Wave Superconductor

We calculate transport properties of disordered 2D d-wave superconductors from solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, and show that weak localization effects give rise to a finite frequency peak in the optical conductivity similar to that observed in experiments on disordered cuprates. At low energies, order parameter inhomogeneities induce linear and quadratic temperature dependencies in microwave and thermal conductivities respectively, and appear to drive the system towards a quasiparticle insulating phase.

$Π$ à la node: disordered d-wave superconductors in two dimensions for the random masses

We review work on the problem of disorder in the 2D d-wave superconducting state, and show that the symmetries of the normal state and the disorder distribution are vital for understanding the low-energy behavior. Most previous theoretical results for the density of states (DOS) are reconciled by a combination of exact numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and weak localization calculations, which suggest that a novel diffusive mode with momentum $(π,π)$ is responsible for a divergence of the DOS in the globally particle-hole symmetric case. We note briefly that the simple problem of a disordered tight-binding band of normal electrons displays some similar effects, which have been overlooked in the literature. Finally, in the physically realistic case of binary alloy disorder, no particle-hole symmetry, and an order parameter which is supressed around each impurity site, a power law with nonuniversal exponent is predicted.

Nesting symmetries and diffusion in disordered d-wave superconductors

The low-energy density of states (DOS) of disordered 2D d-wave superconductors is extremely sensitive to details of both the disorder model and the electronic band structure. Using diagrammatic methods and numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we show that the physical origin of this sensitivity is the existence of a novel diffusive mode with momentum close to $(π,π)$ which is gapless only in systems with a global nesting symmetry. We find that in generic situations, the DOS vanishes at the Fermi level. However, proximity to the highly symmetric case may nevertheless lead to observable non-monotonic behavior of the DOS in the cuprates.

Density of states "width parity" effect in d-wave superconducting quantum wires

We calculate the density of states (DOS) in a clean mesoscopic d-wave superconducting quantum wire, i.e. a sample of infinite length but finite width $N$. For open boundary conditions, the DOS at zero energy is found to be zero if $N$ is even, and nonzero if $N$ is odd. At finite chemical potential, all chains are gapped but the qualtitative differences between even and odd $N$ remain.

Quasi-particle Lifetimes in a d_{x^2-y^2} Superconductor

We consider the lifetime of quasi-particles in a d-wave superconductor due to scattering from antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations, and explicitly separate the contribution from Umklapp processes which determines the electrical conductivity. Results for the temperature dependence of the total scattering rate and the Umklapp scattering rate are compared with relaxation rates obtained from thermal and microwave conductivity measurements, respectively.

Comment on ``Density of States of Disordered Two-Dimensional Crystals with Half-Filled Band''

In a recent letter (PRL 84, 3930 (2000)) Nakhmedov et al. claimed that the Van Hove singularity at $ε=0$ in the density of states (DoS) of the two-dimensional crystal with half-filled tight-binding band survives the addition of substitutional impurities. This derivation suffers from several inconsistencies. We resolve them and show that the DoS at the band center is finite, as one might naively expect.

Observability of quantum phase fluctuations in cuprate superconductors

We study the order parameter phase fluctuation effects in cuprate superconductors near T=0, using a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave BCS model. An effective phason theory is obtained which is used to estimate the strength of the fluctuations, the fluctuation correction to the in-plane penetration depth, and the pair-field susceptibility. We find that while the phase fluctuation effects are difficult to observe in the renormalization of the superfluid phase stiffness, they may be observed in a pair tunneling experiment which measures the pair-field susceptibility.

Thermodynamics of d-wave superconductors in a magnetic field

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor in the vortex state using a semiclassical approach, and argue that such an approach is valid for the analysis of the experimental data on high-temperature superconductors. We develop a formalism where the spatial average of a physical quantity is written as an integral over the probability density of the Doppler shift, and evaluate this probability density for several model cases. The approach is then used to analyse the behavior of the specific heat and the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate in a magnetic field. We compare our results with the experimental measurements, and explain the origin of the discrepancy between the results from different groups. We also address the observability of the recently predicted fourfold oscillations of the specific heat for the magnetic field parallel to the copper oxide planes. We consider both the orbital and the Zeeman effects, and conclude that at experimentally relevant temperatures Zeeman splitting does not appreciably reduce the anisotropy, although it does change the field dependence of the anisotropic specific heat. We predict a scaling law for the non-exponentially decaying NMR magnetization, and discuss different approaches to the effective relaxation rate.

Vortex in a d-wave superconductor at low temperatures

A systematic perturbation theory is developed to describe the magnetic field-induced subdominant $s$- and $d_{xy}$-wave order parameters in the mixed state of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor, enabling us to obtain, within weak-coupling BCS theory, analytic results for the free energy of a d-wave superconductor in an applied magnetic field $H_{c1}\ltsim H\ll H_{c2}$ from $T_c$ down to very low temperatures. Known results for a single isolated vortex in the Ginzburg-Landau regime are recovered, and the behavior at low temperatures for the subdominant component is shown to be qualitatively different. In the case of subdominant $d_{xy}$ pair component, superfluid velocity gradients and an orbital Zeeman effect are shown to compete in determining the vortex state, but for realistic field strengths the latter appears to be irrelevant. On this basis, we argue that recent predictions of a low-temperature phase transition in connection with recent thermal conductivity measurements are unlikely to be correct.

Inhomogeneous order-parameter suppression in disordered d-wave superconductors

We report on a numerical study of disorder effects in 2D d-wave BCS superconductors. We compare exact numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) equations for the density of states $ρ(E)$ with the standard T-matrix approximation. Local suppression of the order parameter near impurity sites, which occurs in self-consistent solutions of the BdG equations, leads to apparent power law behavior $ρ(E) \sim |E|^α$ with non-universal $α$ over an energy scale comparable to the single impurity resonance energy $Ω_0$. We show that the novel effects arise from static spatial correlations between the order parameter and the impurity distribution.

Details of disorder matter in 2D d-wave superconductors

We demonstrate that discrepancies between predicted low-energy quasiparticle properties in disordered 2D d-wave superconductors occur because of the unanticipated importance of disorder model details and normal-state particle-hole symmetry. This conclusion follows from numerically exact evaluations of the quasiparticle density-of-states predicted by the Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) mean field equations for both binary alloy and random site energy disorder models. For the realistic case, which is best described by a binary alloy model without particle-hole symmetry, we predict density-of-states suppression below an energy scale which appears to be correlated with the corresponding single-impurity resonance.

Free Energy and Magnetic Penetration Depth of a $d$-Wave Superconductor in the Meissner State

We investigate the free energy and the penetration depth of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor in the presence of a weak magnetic field by taking account of thermal, nonlocal and nonlinear effects. In an approximation in which the superfluid velocity $v_s$ is assumed to be slowly varying, the free energy is calculated and compared with available results in several limiting cases. It is shown that either nonlocal or nonlinear effects may cut off the linear-$T$ dependence of both the free energy and the penetration depth in all the experimental geometries. At extremely low $T$, the nonlocal effects will also generically modify the linear $H$ dependence of the penetration depth ("nonlinear Meissner effect") in most experimental geometries, but for supercurrents oriented along the nodal directions, the effect may be recovered. We compare our predictions with existing experiments on the cuprate superconductors.

Angle-dependent magnetothermal conductivity in d-wave superconductors

We analyse the behavior of the thermal conductivity, $κ(H)$, in the vortex state of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor when both the heat current and the applied magnetic field are in the basal plane. At low temperature the effect of the field is accounted for in a semiclassical approximation, via a Doppler shift in the spectrum of the nodal quasiparticles. In that regime $κ(H)$ exhibits twofold oscillations as a function of the angle between the direction of the field in the plane and the direction of the heat current, in agreement with experiment.
