Nuclear Charge Radii of Sr Isotopes: Reevaluation based on Transition Frequency Measurements in the $5s-5p-4d$ manifold in Sr$^+$

High-precision quasi-simultaneous collinear and anticollinear laser spectroscopy was performed on the $5s\,^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 5p\,^2P_{1/2}$ (D1), $5s\,^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 5p\,^2P_{3/2}$ (D2), and three $4d\rightarrow 5p$ transitions in the naturally abundant Sr$^+$ isotopes. Absolute transition frequencies were determined with uncertainties as low as $600$ kHz, while common-mode rejection enabled the extraction of isotope shifts with uncertainties down to $200$ kHz, one order of magnitude smaller than previously achieved. The uncertainties of the hyperfine-structure constants of the $5p$ states and the $4d\,^2D_{3/2}$ state in $^{87}$Sr were also improved. A King-plot analysis yielded a field-shift ratio of the D2 and D1 lines of $F_{\mathrm{D2}}/F_{\mathrm{D1}}=1.004(5)$, which lies within the theoretically allowed region and provides a benchmark for atomic-structure calculations. Using data from all stable isotopes and investigated transitions, we compare field- and mass-shift constants obtained using several established approaches, ranging from King plots based entirely on experimental input to state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} atomic-structure calculations. We show that, above $N=50$, the extracted charge radii depend strongly on the approach used.

A global view on star formation: The GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey XII. Effelsberg's continuum view and data release

Extended radio continuum emission and its linear polarization play a key role in probing large-scale structures of synchrotron and free-free emission in the Milky Way. Despite the existence of many radio continuum surveys, sensitive and high-angular-resolution single-dish surveys of extended radio continuum emission remain scarce. As part of the GLObal view of STAR formation (GLOSTAR) survey, we will also crucially complement the existing data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) by addressing the missing zero-spacing gap. Within the framework of the GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey, we performed large-scale radio continuum imaging observations toward the Galactic plane in the range $-2^{\circ}< \ell <60^{\circ}$ and $|b|<1.1^{\circ}$, as well as the Cygnus X region with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope. We present the Effelsberg continuum survey at 4.89GHz and 6.82GHz including linear polarization with angular resolutions of 145$^{\prime\prime}$ and 106$^{\prime\prime}$, respectively. The survey has been corrected for missing large-scale emission using available low-angular-resolution surveys. Comparison with previous single-dish surveys indicates that our continuum survey represents the highest-quality single-dish data collected to date at this frequency. More than 90\% of the flux density missed by the VLA D-array data is effectively recovered by the Effelsberg continuum survey. The improved sensitivity and angular resolution of our survey enable reliable mapping of Galactic magnetic field structures, with polarization data that are less affected by depolarization than in previous surveys. The GLOSTAR single-dish continuum data will be released publicly, offering a valuable resource for studying extended objects including HII regions, supernova remnants, diffuse interstellar medium, and Galactic structure. A Setup to Study Atomic State Population Dynamics and Optical Polarization at CRYRING@ESR

We present a recently established setup for laser spectroscopy at CRYRING@ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Here, laser spectroscopy can be performed on stored and cooled ion bunches and coasting beams. First spectra of $^{24,25}$Mg$^+$ ions are presented that were recorded by classical Doppler-limited fluorescence spectroscopy as well as $\Lambda$-spectroscopy using counter- and copropagating laser beams that are Doppler-shifted by several nm.

Electromagnetic moments of the odd-mass nickel isotopes $^{59-67}$Ni

The magnetic dipole and the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the nuclear ground states in the odd-mass nickel isotopes $^{59-67}$Ni have been determined using collinear laser spectroscopy at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. They are compared to ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) calculations including contributions of two-body currents as well as to shell-model calculations. The two-body-current contributions significantly improve the agreement with experimental data, reducing the mean-square deviation from the experimental moments by a factor of 3 to 5, depending on the employed interaction. For all interactions, the largest contributions are obtained for the $5/2^-$ ($7/2^-$) isotopes $^{65}$Ni ($^{55}$Ni), which is ascribed to the high angular momentum of the $f$ orbitals. Our results demonstrate that the inclusion of two-body-current contributions to the magnetic moment in an isotopic chain of complex nuclei can be handled by the VS-IMSRG and can outperform phenomenological shell-model calculations using effective $g$-factors in the nickel region.

Larmor Power Limit for Cyclotron Radiation of Relativistic Particles in a Waveguide

Cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) is a modern technique for high-precision energy spectroscopy, in which the energy of a charged particle in a magnetic field is measured via the frequency of the emitted cyclotron radiation. The He6-CRES collaboration aims to use CRES to probe beyond the standard model physics at the TeV scale by performing high-resolution and low-background beta-decay spectroscopy of ${}^6\textrm{He}$ and ${}^{19}\textrm{Ne}$. Having demonstrated the first observation of individual, high-energy (0.1 -- 2.5 MeV) positrons and electrons via their cyclotron radiation, the experiment provides a novel window into the radiation of relativistic charged particles in a waveguide via the time-derivative (slope) of the cyclotron radiation frequency, $\mathrm{d}f_\textrm{c}/\mathrm{d}t$. We show that analytic predictions for the total cyclotron radiation power emitted by a charged particle in circular and rectangular waveguides are approximately consistent with the Larmor formula, each scaling with the Lorentz factor of the underlying $e^\pm$ as $\gamma^4$. This hypothesis is corroborated with experimental CRES slope data.

Nuclear charge radius of $^{26m}$Al and its implication for V$_{ud}$ in the quark-mixing matrix

Collinear laser spectroscopy was performed on the isomer of the aluminium isotope $^{26m}$Al. The measured isotope shift to $^{27}$Al in the $3s^{2}3p\;^{2}\!P^\circ_{3/2} \rightarrow 3s^{2}4s\;^{2}\!S_{1/2}$ atomic transition enabled the first experimental determination of the nuclear charge radius of $^{26m}$Al, resulting in $R_c$=\qty{3.130\pm.015}{\femto\meter}. This differs by 4.5 standard deviations from the extrapolated value used to calculate the isospin-symmetry breaking corrections in the superallowed $\beta$ decay of $^{26m}$Al. Its corrected $\mathcal{F}t$ value, important for the estimation of $V_{ud}$ in the CKM matrix, is thus shifted by one standard deviation to \qty{3071.4\pm1.0}{\second}.

A global view on star formation: The GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey VIII. Formaldehyde absorption in Cygnus~X

Cygnus X is one of the closest and most active high-mass star-forming regions in our Galaxy, making it one of the best laboratories for studying massive star formation. As part of the GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey, we performed large scale simultaneous H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$-1$_{1,1}$) spectral line and radio continuum imaging observations toward Cygnus X at $λ\sim$6 cm with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Effelsberg-100 m radio telescope. Our Effelsberg observations reveal widespread H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$-1$_{1,1}$) absorption with a spatial extent of $\gtrsim$50 pc in Cygnus~X for the first time. On large scales of 4.4 pc, the relative orientation between local velocity gradient and magnetic field tends to be more parallel at H$_{2}$ column densities of $\gtrsim$1.8$\times 10^{22}$~cm$^{-2}$. On the smaller scale of 0.17 pc, our VLA+Effelsberg combined data reveal H$_{2}$CO absorption only toward three bright H{\scriptsize II} regions. Our observations demonstrate that H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$-1$_{1,1}$) is commonly optically thin. Kinematic analysis supports the assertion that molecular clouds generally exhibit supersonic motions on scales of 0.17-4.4 pc. We show a non-negligible contribution of the cosmic microwave background radiation in producing extended absorption features in Cygnus X. Our observations suggest that H$_{2}$CO ($1_{1,0}-1_{1,1}$) can trace molecular gas with H$_{2}$ column densities of $\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. The ortho-H$_{2}$CO fractional abundance with respect to H$_{2}$ has a mean value of 7.0$\times 10^{-10}$. A comparison of velocity dispersions on different linear scales suggests that the dominant $-3$ km s$^{-1}$ velocity component in the prominent DR21 region has nearly identical velocity dispersions on scales of 0.17-4.4 pc, which deviates from the expected behavior of classic turbulence.

A global view on star formation: The GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey. VII. Supernova remnants in the Galactic longitude range $28^\circ<l<36^\circ$

Context. While over 1000 supernova remnants (SNRs) are estimated to exist in the Milky Way, only less than 400 have been found to date. In the context of this apparent deficiency, more than 150 SNR candidates were recently identified in the D-configuration Very Large Array (VLA-D) continuum images of the 4--8 GHz global view on star formation (GLOSTAR) survey, in the Galactic longitude range $-2^\circ<l<60^\circ$. Aims. We attempt to find evidence of nonthermal synchrotron emission from 35 SNR candidates in the region of Galactic longitude range $28^\circ<l<36^\circ$, and also to study the radio continuum emission from the previously confirmed SNRs in this region. Methods. Using the short-spacing corrected GLOSTAR VLA-D+Effelsberg images, we measure ${\sim}6$ GHz total and linearly polarized flux densities of the SNR candidates and the SNRs that were previously confirmed. We also attempt to determine the spectral indices by measuring flux densities from complementary Galactic plane surveys and from the temperature-temperature plots of the GLOSTAR-Effelsberg images. Results. We provide evidence of nonthermal emission from four candidates that have spectral indices and polarization consistent with a SNR origin, and, considering their morphology, we are confident that three of these (G28.36+0.21, G28.78-0.44, and G29.38+0.10) are indeed SNRs. However, about $25\%$ of the candidates have spectral index measurements that indicate thermal emission, and the rest of them are too faint to have a good constraint on the spectral index yet. Conclusions. Additional observations at longer wavelengths and higher sensitivities will shed more light on the nature of these candidates. A simple Monte-Carlo simulation reiterates the view that future studies must persist with the current strategy of searching for SNRs with small angular size to solve the problem of the Milky Way's missing SNRs.

$β$-nuclear-recoil correlation from $^6$He decay in a laser trap

We report the first precise measurement of a $β$-recoil correlation from a radioactive noble gas ($^6{\rm He}$) confined via a magneto-optical trap. The measurement is motivated by the search for exotic tensor-type contributions to the charged weak current. Interpreted as tensor currents with right-handed neutrinos, the measurements yield: $|C_T/C_A|^2\le 0.022$ (90\% C.L.). On the other hand, for left-handed neutrinos the limits are $0.007< C_T/C_A <0.111$~(90\%\ C.L.). The sensitivity of the present measurement is mainly limited by experimental uncertainties in determining the time response properties and the distance between the atom cloud and the micro-channel plate used for recoil ion detection.

A global view on star formation: The GLOSTAR Galactic Plane Survey. I. Overview and first results for the Galactic longitude range 28° < l < 36°

Surveys of the Milky Way at various wavelengths have changed our view of star formation in our Galaxy considerably in recent years. In this paper we give an overview of the GLOSTAR survey, a new survey covering large parts (145 square degrees) of the northern Galactic plane using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in the frequency range 4-8 GHz and the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. This provides for the first time a radio survey covering all angular scales down to 1.5 arcsecond, similar to complementary near-IR and mid-IR galactic plane surveys. We outline the main goals of the survey and give a detailed description of the observations and the data reduction strategy. In our observations we covered the radio continuum in full polarization, as well as the 6.7 GHz methanol maser line, the 4.8~GHz formaldehyde line, and seven radio recombination lines. The observations were conducted in the most compact D configuration of the VLA and in the more extended B configuration. This yielded spatial resolutions of 18" and 1.5" for the two configurations, respectively. We also combined the D configuration images with the Effelsberg 100-m data to provide zero spacing information, and we jointly imaged the D- and B-configuration data for optimal sensitivity of the intermediate spatial ranges. Here we show selected results for the first part of the survey, covering the range of 28 deg <l<36 deg and |b|< 1 deg, including the full low-resolution continuum image, examples of high-resolution images of selected sources, and the first results from the spectral line data.

Effects of surface treatments on flux tunable transmon qubits

One of the main limitations in state-of-the art solid-state quantum processors are qubit decoherence and relaxation due to noise in their local environment. For the field to advance towards full fault-tolerant quantum computing, a better understanding of the underlying microscopic noise sources is therefore needed. Adsorbates on surfaces, impurities at interfaces and material defects have been identified as sources of noise and dissipation in solid-state quantum devices. Here, we use an ultra-high vacuum package to study the impact of vacuum loading, UV-light exposure and ion irradiation treatments on coherence and slow parameter fluctuations of flux tunable superconducting transmon qubits. We analyse the effects of each of these surface treatments by comparing averages over many individual qubits and measurements before and after treatment. The treatments studied do not significantly impact the relaxation rate $Γ_1$ and the echo dephasing rate $Γ_2^\textrm{e}$, except for Ne ion bombardment which reduces $Γ_1$. In contrast, flux noise parameters are improved by removing magnetic adsorbates from the chip surfaces with UV-light and NH$_3$ treatments. Additionally, we demonstrate that SF$_6$ ion bombardment can be used to adjust qubit frequencies in-situ and post fabrication without affecting qubit coherence at the sweet spot.

Ultrahigh Vacuum Packaging and Surface Cleaning for Quantum Devices

We describe design, implementation and performance of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) package for superconducting qubit chips or other surface sensitive quantum devices. The UHV loading procedure allows for annealing, ultra-violet light irradiation, ion milling and surface passivation of quantum devices before sealing them into a measurement package. The package retains vacuum during the transfer to cryogenic temperatures by active pumping with a titanium getter layer. We characterize the treatment capabilities of the system and present measurements of flux tunable qubits with an average T$_1=84~μ$s and T$^{echo}_2=134~μ$s after vacuum-loading these samples into a bottom loading dilution refrigerator in the UHV-package.

Benchmarking the noise sensitivity of different parametric two-qubit gates in a single superconducting quantum computing platform

The possibility to utilize different types of two-qubit gates on a single quantum computing platform adds flexibility in the decomposition of quantum algorithms. A larger hardware-native gate set may decrease the number of required gates, provided that all gates are realized with high fidelity. Here, we benchmark both controlled-Z (CZ) and exchange-type (iSWAP) gates using a parametrically driven tunable coupler that mediates the interaction between two superconducting qubits. Using randomized benchmarking protocols we estimate an error per gate of $0.9\pm0.03\%$ and $1.3\pm0.4\%$ fidelity for the CZ and the iSWAP gate, respectively. We argue that spurious $ZZ$-type couplings are the dominant error source for the iSWAP gate, and that phase stability of all microwave drives is of utmost importance. Such differences in the achievable fidelities for different two-qubit gates have to be taken into account when mapping quantum algorithms to real hardware.

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice: A Green's function study

We consider the pyrochlore-lattice quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet and discuss the properties of this spin model at arbitrary temperatures. To this end, we use the Green's function technique within the random-phase (or Tyablikov) approximation as well as the linear spin-wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We compare our results to the ones obtained recently by other methods to corroborate our findings. Finally, we contrast our results with the ones for the simple-cubic-lattice case: both lattices are identical at the mean-field level. We demonstrate that thermal fluctuations are more efficient in the pyrochlore case (finite-temperature frustration effects). Our results may be of use for interpreting experimental data for ferromagnetic pyrochlore materials.

Thermodynamics of the kagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with arbitrary spin $S$

We use a second-order rotational invariant Green's function method (RGM) and the high-temperature expansion (HTE) to calculate the thermodynamic properties, of the kagome-lattice spin-$S$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor exchange $J$. While the HTE yields accurate results down to temperatures of about $T/S(S+1) \sim J$, the RGM provides data for arbitrary $T \ge 0$. For the ground state we use the RGM data to analyze the $S$-dependence of the excitation spectrum, the excitation velocity, the uniform susceptibility, the spin-spin correlation functions, the correlation length, and the structure factor. We found that the so-called $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ ordering is more pronounced than the $q=0$ ordering for all values of $S$. In the extreme quantum case $S=1/2$ the zero-temperature correlation length is only of the order of the nearest-neighbor separation. Then we study the temperature dependence of several physical quantities for spin quantum numbers $S=1/2,1,\dots,7/2$. As increasing $S$ the typical maximum in the specific heat and in the uniform susceptibility are shifted towards lower values of $T/S(S+1)$ and the height of the maximum is growing. The structure factor ${\cal S}(\mathbf{q})$ exhibits two maxima at magnetic wave vectors $\mathbf{q}={\mathbf{Q}_i}, i=0,1,$ corresponding to the $q=0$ and $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ state. We find that the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ short-range order is more pronounced than the $q=0$ short-range order for all temperatures $T \ge 0$. For the spin-spin correlation functions, the correlation lengths and the structure factors, we find a finite low-temperature region $0 \le T < T^*\approx a/S(S+1)$, $a \approx 0.2$, where these quantities are almost independent of $T$.

Spatial inhomogeneity and temporal dynamics of a 2D electron gas in interaction with a 2D adatom gas

Fundamental interest for 2D electron gas (2DEG) systems has been recently renewed with the advent of 2D materials and their potential high-impact applications in optoelectronics. Here, we investigate a 2DEG created by the electron transfer from a Ag adatom gas deposited on a Si(111)$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-Ag surface to an electronic surface state. Using low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM), we measure the Ag adatom gas concentration and the 2DEG-induced charge transfer. We demonstrate a linear dependence of the surface work function change on the Ag adatom gas concentration. A breakdown of the linear relationship is induced by the occurrence of the Ag adatom gas superstructure identified as Si(111)$\sqrt{21}\times\sqrt{21}$-Ag only observed below room temperature. We evidence below room temperature a confinement of the 2DEG on atomic terraces characterised by spatial inhomogeneities of the 2DEG-induced charge transfer along with temporal fluctuations. These variations mirror the Ag adatom gas concentration changes induced by the growth of 3D Ag islands and the occurrence of an Ehrlich-Schwoebel diffusion barrier of 155$\pm$10meV.

Thermodynamics of frustrated ferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chains: The role of inter-chain coupling

The thermodynamics of coupled frustrated ferromagnetic chains is studied within a spin-rotation-invariant Green's function approach. We consider an isotropic Heisenberg spin-half system with a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling $J_1<0$ between nearest neighbors and a frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor in-chain coupling $J_2>0$. We focus on moderate strength of frustration $J_2 < |J_1|/4$ such that the in-chain spin-spin correlations are predominantly ferromagnetic. We consider two inter-chain couplings (ICs) $J_{\perp,y}$ and $J_{\perp,z}$, corresponding to the two axis perpendicular to the chain, where ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic ICs are taken into account. We discuss the influence of frustration on the ground-state properties for antiferromagnetic ICs, where the ground state is of quantum nature. The major part of our study is devoted to the finite-temperature properties. We calculate the critical temperature $T_{c}$ as a function of the competing exchange couplings $J_{2},J_{\perp,y}, J_{\perp,z}$. We find that for fixed ICs $T_c$ monotonically decreases with increasing frustration $J_2$, where as $J_2 \to |J_1|/4$ the $T_c(J_2)$-curve drops down rapidly. To characterize the magnetic ordering below and above $T_c$ we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions $\langle {\bf S}_0 {\bf S}_{\bf R} \rangle$, the magnetic order parameter $M$, the uniform static susceptibility $χ_0$ as well as the correlation length $ξ$. Moreover, we discuss the specific heat $C_V$ and the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum $ω_{\mathbf{q}}$. As $J_2 \to |J_1|/4$ some unusual frustration-induced features were found, such as an increase of the in-chain spin stiffness (in case of ferromagnetic ICs) or of the in-chain spin-wave velocity (in case of antiferromagnetic ICs) with growing temperature.

A systematic observational study of radio properties of H2O megamaser Seyfert-2 galaxies

A systematic study is performed on radio properties of H$_{2}$O megamaser host Seyfert 2 galaxies, through multi-band radio continuum observations (at 11cm, 6.0 cm, 3.6 cm, 2.0 cm and 1.3 cm) with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope within a total time duration of four days. For comparison, a control Seyfert 2 galaxy sample without detected maser emission was also observed. Spectral indices were determined for those sources for which measurements exist at two adjacent bands assuming a power-law dependence S$_ν\propto ν^{-α}$, where S is the flux density and $ν$ is the frequency. Comparisons of the radio continuum properties between megamaser and non-masing Seyfert 2s show no difference in spectral indices. However, a difference in radio luminosity is statistically significant, i.e. the maser galaxies tend to have higher radio luminosities by a factor of 2 to 3 than the non-masing ones, commonly reaching values above a critical threshold of 10$^{29}$ ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$. This result confirms an earlier conclusion by Zhang et al. (2012), but is based on superior data with respect to the time interval within which the data were obtained, with respect to the observational facility (only one telescope used), the number of frequency bands.
