Theory of acoustic surface plasmons

Recently, a novel low-energy collective excitation has been predicted to exist at metal surfaces where a quasi two-dimensional (2D) surface-state band coexists with the underlying three-dimensional (3D) continuum. Here we present a model in which the screening of a semiinfinite 3D metal is incorporated into the description of electronic excitations in a 2D electron gas through the introduction of an effective 2D dielectric function. Our self-consistent calculations of the dynamical response of the 3D substrate indicate that an acoustic surface plasmon exists for all possible locations of the 2D sheet relative to the metal surface. This low-energy excitation, which exhibits linear dispersion at low wave vectors, is dictated by the nonlocality of the 3D dynamical response providing incomplete screening of the 2D electron-density oscillations.

Surface plasmons in metallic structures

Since the concept of a surface collective excitation was first introduced by Ritchie, surface plasmons have played a significant role in a variety of areas of fundamental and applied research, from surface dynamics to surface-plasmon microscopy, surface-plasmon resonance technology, and a wide range of photonic applications. Here we review the basic concepts underlying the existence of surface plasmons in metallic structures, and introduce a new low-energy surface collective excitation that has been recently predicted to exist.

Nonlinear screening and stopping power in two-dimensional electron gases

We have used density functional theory to study the nonlinear screening properties of a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas. In particular, we consider the screening of an external static point charge of magnitude Z as a function of the distance of the charge from the plane of the gas. The self-consistent screening potentials are then used to determine the 2D stopping power in the low velocity limit based on the momentum transfer cross-section. Calculations as a function of Z establish the limits of validity of linear and quadratic response theory calculations, and show that nonlinear screening theory already provides significant corrections in the case of protons. In contrast to the 3D situation, we find that the nonlinearly screened potential supports a bound state even in the high density limit. This behaviour is elucidated with the derivation of a high density screening theorem which proves that the screening charge can be calculated perturbatively in the high density limit for arbitrary dimensions. However, the theorem has particularly interesting implications in 2D where, contrary to expectations, we find that perturbation theory remains valid even when the perturbing potential supports bound states.

The role of the spin in quasiparticle interference

Quasiparticle interference patterns measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used to study the local electronic structure of metal surfaces and high temperature superconductors. Here, we show that even in non-magnetic systems the spin of the quasiparticles can have a profound effect on the interference patterns. On Bi(110), where the surface state bands are not spin-degenerate, the patterns are not related to the dispersion of the electronic states in a simple way. In fact, the features which are expected for the spin-independent situation are absent and the observed interference patterns can only be interpreted by taking spin-conserving scattering events into account.

Strong spin-orbit splitting on Bi surfaces

Using first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission, we show that the spin-orbit interaction leads to a strong splitting of the surface state bands on low-index surfaces of Bi. The dispersion of the states and the corresponding Fermi surfaces are profoundly modified in the whole surface Brillouin zone. We discuss the implications of these findings with respect to a proposed surface charge density wave on Bi(111) as well as to the surface screening, surface spin-density waves, electron (hole) dynamics in surface states, and to possible applications to the spintronics.

Exchange and correlation effects in the relaxation of hot electrons in noble metals

We report extensive first-principles calculations of the inelastic lifetime of low-energy electrons in the noble metals Cu, Ag, and Au. The quasiparticle self-energy is computed with full inclusion of exchange and correlation (xc) effects, in the framework of the GWΓapproximation of many-body theory. Although exchange and correlation may considerably reduce both the screening and the bare interaction of hot electrons with the Fermi gas, these corrections have opposite signs. Our results indicate that the overall effect of short-range xc is small and GWΓlinewidths are close to their xc-free G^0W^0 counterparts, as occurs in the case of a free-electron gas.

Ultrafast electron dynamics in metals

During the last decade, significant progress has been achieved in the rapidly growing field of the dynamics of {\it hot} carriers in metals. Here we present an overview of the recent achievements in the theoretical understanding of electron dynamics in metals, and focus on the theoretical description of the inelastic lifetime of excited hot electrons. We outline theoretical formulations of the hot-electron lifetime that is originated in the inelastic scattering of the excited {\it quasiparticle} with occupied states below the Fermi level of the solid. {\it First-principles} many-body calculations are reviewed. Related work and future directions are also addressed.

Novel low-energy collective excitation at metal surfaces

A novel collective excitation is predicted to exist at metal surfaces where a two-dimensional surface-state band coexists with the underlying three-dimensional continuum. This is a low-energy acoustic plasmon with linear dispersion at small wave vectors. Since new modern spectroscopies are especially sensitive to surface dynamics near the Fermi level, the existence of surface-state induced acoustic plasmons is expected to play a key role in a large variety of new phenomena and to create situations with potentially new physics.

Electron-phonon interaction at the Be(0001) surface

We present a first principle study of the electron-phonon (e-p) interaction at the Be(0001) surface. The real and imaginary part of the e-p self energy are calculated for the surface state in the binding energy range from the $\barΓ$ point to the Fermi level. Our calculation shows an overall good agreement with several photoemission data measured at high and low temperatures. Additionally, we show that the energy derivative of real part of the self-energy presents a strong temperature and energy variation close to $E_{F}$, making it difficult to measure its value just at $E_{F}$.

Role of occupied d bands in the dynamics of excited electrons and holes in Ag

The role that occupied $d$ bands play in the inelastic lifetime of bulk and surface states in Ag is investigated from the knowledge of the quasiparticle self-energy. In the case of bulk electrons, $sp$ bands are taken to be free-electron like. For surface states, the surface band structure of $sp$ states is described with the use of a realistic one-dimensional hamiltonian. The presence of occupied $d$ states is considered in both cases by introducing a polarizable background. We obtain inelastic lifetimes of bulk electrons that are in good agreement with first-principles band-structure calculations. Our surface-state lifetime calculations indicate that the agreement with measured lifetimes of both crystal-induced and image-potential induced surface states on Ag(100) and Ag(111) is considerably improved when the screening of $d$ electrons is taken into account.

Nonlinear screening in two-dimensional electron gases

We have performed self-consistent calculations of the nonlinear screening of a point charge Z in a two-dimensional electron gas using a density functional theory method. We find that the screened potential for a Z=1 charge supports a bound state even in the high density limit where one might expect perturbation theory to apply. To explain this behaviour, we prove a theorem to show that the results of linear response theory are in fact correct even though bound states exist.

The role of surface plasmons in the decay of image-potential states on silver surfaces

The combined effect of single-particle and collective surface excitations in the decay of image-potential states on Ag surfaces is investigated, and the origin of the long-standing discrepancy between experimental measurements and previous theoretical predictions for the lifetime of these states is elucidated. Although surface-plasmon excitation had been expected to reduce the image-state lifetime, we demonstrate that the subtle combination of the spatial variation of s-d polarization in Ag and the characteristic non-locality of many-electron interactions near the surface yields surprisingly long image-state lifetimes, in agreement with experiment.

Image-potential-induced states at metal surfaces

The unequivocal observation in the early 1980s of a new class of unnocupied surface states that are bound to the vacuum level of a variety of metal surfaces has led over the last two decades to an active area of research in condensed-matter and surface physics. We discuss the key ingredients of the theory of these so-called image states, which have their origin in the long range nature of the image potential outside a solid.

Role of bulk and surface phonons in the decay of metal surface states

We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the electron-phonon contribution to the lifetime broadening of the surface states on Cu(111) and Ag(111), in comparison with high-resolution photoemission results. The calculations, including electron and phonon states of the bulk and the surface, resolve the relative importance of the Rayleigh mode, being dominant for the lifetime at small hole binding energies. Including the electron-electron interaction, the theoretical results are in excellent agreement with the measured binding energy and temperature dependent lifetime broadening.

Lifetime of d-holes at Cu surfaces: Theory and experiment

We have investigated the hole dynamics at copper surfaces by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission experiments and many-body quasiparticle GW calculations. Large deviations from a free-electron-like picture are observed both in the magnitude and the energy dependence of the lifetimes, with a clear indication that holes exhibit longer lifetimes than electrons with the same excitation energy. Our calculations show that the small overlap of d- and sp-states below the Fermi level is responsible for the observed enhancement. Although there is qualitative good agreement of our theoretical predictions and the measured lifetimes, there still exist some discrepancies pointing to the need of a better description of the actual band structure of the solid.

Surface and Image-Potential States on the MgB_2(0001) Surfaces

We present a self-consistent pseudopotential calculation of surface and image-potential states on $MgB_2(0001)$ for both $B$-terminated ($B-t$) and $Mg$-terminated ($Mg-t$) surfaces. We find a variety of very clear surface and subsurface states as well as resonance image-potential states n=1,2 on both surfaces. The surface layer DOS at $E_F$ is increased by 55% at $B-t$ and by 90% at the $Mg-t$ surface compared to DOS in the corresponding bulk layers.

Dielectric functions and collective excitations in MgB_2

The frequency- and momentum-dependent dielectric function $ε{(\bf q,ω)}$ as well as the energy loss function Im[-$ε^{-1}{(\bf q,ω)}$\protect{]} are calculated for intermetallic superconductor $MgB_2$ by using two {\it ab initio} methods: the plane-wave pseudopotential method and the tight-binding version of the LMTO method. We find two plasmon modes dispersing at energies $\sim 2$-8 eV and $\sim 18$-22 eV. The high energy plasmon results from a free electron like plasmon mode while the low energy collective excitation has its origin in a peculiar character of the band structure. Both plasmon modes demonstrate clearly anisotropic behaviour of both the peak position and the peak width. In particular, the low energy collective excitation has practically zero width in the direction perpendicular to boron layers and broadens in other directions.

Surface-state electron dynamics in noble metals

Theoretical investigations of surface-state electron dynamics in noble metals are reported. The dynamically screened interaction is computed, within many-body theory, by going beyond a free-electron description of the metal surface. Calculations of the inelastic linewidth of Shockley surface-state electrons and holes in these materials are also presented. While the linewidth of excited holes at the surface-state band edge (${\bf k}_\parallel=0$) is dominated by a two-dimensional decay channel, within the surface-state band itself, our calculations indicate that major contributions to the electron-electron interaction of surface-state electrons above the Fermi level come from the underlying bulk electrons.
