Unconditional wave decay in dimension two

We extend Burq's logarithmic decay rate [Bur98] to general compactly supported scatterers in dimension two. The main novelty is using recent results on low-frequency expansions to remove the requirement that the spectrum be regular at zero. This allows us to include, among other examples, arbitrary smooth obstacles with variable boundary conditions.

Thermal nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the real time formalism

The real-time formalism at finite temperature and chemical potential for the nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is developed in the presence of a Gaussian covariant regulator. We construct the most general thermal propagator, by means of the spectral function. As a result, the model involves the propagation of massive quasiparticles. The appearance of complex poles is interpreted as a confinement signal, and in this case we have unstable quasiparticles with a finite decay width. An expression for the propagator along the critical line, where complex poles start to appear, is also obtained. A generalization to other covariant regulators is proposed.

Semitransparent pistons

We consider semitransparent pistons in the presence of extra dimensions. It is shown that the piston is always attracted to the closest wall irrespective of details of the geometry and topology of the extra dimensions and of the cross section of the piston. Furthermore, we evaluate the zeta regularized determinant for this configuration.

Selective epitaxial growth of sub-micron complex oxide structures by amorphous SrTiO3

A chemical-free technique for fabricating submicron complex oxide structures has been developed based on selective epitaxial growth. The crystallinity and hence the conductivity of the complex oxide is inhibited by amorphous SrTiO3 (STO). Using a combination of pulsed laser deposition and electron-beam lithography, amorphous STO barriers are first deposited on a single crystal substrate. A thin film is then deposited on the patterned substrate with the amorphous STO barriers acting to electrically and physically isolate different regions of the film. Since no chemical or physical etchants come in contact with the deposited film, its integrity and stability are preserved. This technique has successfully produced sub-micron YBCO and LCMO structures.

Suppression of low-energy Andreev states by a supercurrent in YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta

We report a coherence-length scale phenomenon related to how the high-Tc order parameter (OP) evolves under a directly-applied supercurrent. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on current-carrying YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta thin-film strips at 4.2K. At current levels well below the theoretical depairing limit, the low-energy Andreev states are suppressed by the supercurrent, while the gap-like structures remain unchanged. We rule out the likelihood of various extrinsic effects, and propose instead a model based on phase fluctuations in the d-wave BTK formalism to explain the suppression. Our results suggest that a supercurrent could weaken the local phase coherence while preserving the pairing amplitude. Other possible scenarios which may cause the observed phenomenon are also discussed.

Microstructural and morphological properties of homoepitaxial (001)ZnTe layers investigated by x-ray diffuse scattering

The microstructural and morphological properties of homoepitaxial (001)ZnTe layers are investigated by x-ray diffuse scattering. High resolution reciprocal space maps recorded close to the ZnTe (004) Bragg peak show different diffuse scattering features. One kind of cross-shaped diffuse scattering streaks along <111> directions can be attributed to stacking faults within the epilayers. Another kind of cross-shaped streaks inclined at an angle of about 80deg with respect to the <110> in-plane direction arises from the morphology of the epilayers. (abridged version)
