Vortex dynamics of rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the influence of dipole-dipole interaction on the formation of vortices in a rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{52}$Cr and $^{164}$Dy atoms in quasi two-dimensional geometry. By numerically solving the corresponding time-dependent mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we show that the dipolar interaction enhances the number of vortices while a repulsive contact interaction increases the stability of the vortices. Further, an ordered vortex lattice of relatively large number of vortices is found in a strongly dipolar BEC.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate soliton on a two-dimensional optical lattice

Using a three-dimensional mean-field model we study one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a weak two-dimensional (2D) square and triangular optical lattice (OL) potentials placed perpendicular to the polarization direction. The stabilization against collapse and expansion of these solitons for a fixed dipolar interaction and a fixed number of atoms is possible for short-range atomic interaction lying between two critical limits. The solitons collapse below the lower limit and escapes to infinity above the upper limit. One can also stabilize identical tiny BEC solitons arranged on the 2D square OL sites forming a stable 2D array of interacting droplets when the OL sites are filled with a filling factor of 1/2 or less. Such an array is unstable when the filling factor is made more than 1/2 by occupying two adjacent sites of OL. These stable 2D arrays of dipolar superfluid BEC solitons are quite similar to the recently studied dipolar Mott insulator states on 2D lattice in the Bose-Hubbard model by Capogrosso-Sansone et al. [B. Capogrosso-Sansone, C. Trefzger, M. Lewenstein, P. Zoller, G. Pupillo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 (2010) 125301].

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large scattering length

A uniform dilute Bose gas of known density has a universal behavior as the atomic scattering length tends to infinity at unitarity while most of its properties are determined by a universal parameter $ξ$ relating the energies of the noninteracting and unitary gases. The usual mean-field equation is not valid in this limit and beyond mean-field corrections become important. We use a dynamical model including such corrections to investigate a trapped disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a dipolar BEC vortex for large scattering length. We study the sensitivity of our results on the parameter $ξ$ and discuss the possibility of extracting the value of this parameter from experimental observables.

Two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate bright and vortex solitons on one-dimensional optical lattice

By solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we generate two-dimensional axially-symmetric and anisotropic dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons, for repulsive atomic interaction, stabilized by only a weak one-dimensional optical lattice (OL) aligned along and perpendicular, respectively, to the dipole polarization direction. In the former case vortex solitons can also be created. We show that it is possible to make a stable array of small interacting axially-symmetric dipolar solitons put on alternate OL sites. Further, we demonstrate the elastic nature of the collision of two such solitons.

Anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the propagation of anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in three dimensions (3D) as well as in quasi-two (2D, disk shape) and quasi-one (1D, cigar shape) dimensions using the mean-field approach. In 3D, the propagation of sound and shock waves are distinct in directions parallel and perpendicular to dipole axis with the appearance of instability above a critical value corresponding to attraction. Similar instability appears in 1D and not in 2D. The numerical anisotropic Mach angle agrees with theoretical prediction. The numerical sound velocity in all cases agrees with that calculated from Bogoliubov theory. A movie of the anisotropic wave propagation in a dipolar condensate is made available as supplementary material.

Numerical and variational solutions of the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation in reduced dimensions

We suggest a simple Gaussian Lagrangian variational scheme for the reduced time-dependent quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in cigar and disk configurations, respectively. The variational approximation for stationary states and breathing oscillation dynamics in reduced dimensions agrees well with the numerical solution of the GP equation even for moderately large short-range and dipolar nonlinearities. The Lagrangian variational scheme also provides much physical insight about soliton formation in dipolar BEC.

Formation, dynamics and stability of coreless vortex dipoles in phase-separated binary condensates

We study the motion of the Gaussian obstacle potential created by blue detuned laser beam through a phase-separated binary condensate in pancake-shaped traps. For the velocity of the obstacle above a critical velocity, we observe the generation of vortex dipoles in the outer component which can penetrate the inner component. This is equivalent to finite, although small, transport of outer component across the inner component. In the inner component, the same method can lead to the formation of coreless vortex dipoles.

Dynamics of gap solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate on a three-dimensional optical lattice

We suggest and study the stable disk- and cigar-shaped gap solitons of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{52}$Cr atoms localized in the lowest band gap by three optical-lattice (OL) potentials along orthogonal directions. The one-dimensional version of these solitons of experimental interest confined by an OL along the dipole moment direction and harmonic traps in transverse directions is also considered. Important dynamics of (i) breathing oscillation of a gap soliton upon perturbation and (ii) dragging of a gap soliton by a moving lattice along axial $z$ direction demonstrates the stability of gap solitons. A movie clip of dragging of three-dimensional gap soliton is included.

Dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional bright and vortex solitons of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction

By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. Phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons at large velocities. Two solitons placed side-by-side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction.

Matter wave switching in Bose-Einstein condensates via intensity redistribution soliton interactions

Using time dependent nonlinear (s-wave scattering length) coupling between the components of a weakly interacting two component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), we show the possibility of matter wave switching (fraction of atoms transfer) between the components via shape changing/intensity redistribution (matter redistribution) soliton interactions. We investigate the exact bright-bright N-soliton solution of an effective one-dimensional (1D) two component BEC by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length and atom gain or loss. In particular, we show that the effective 1D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with time dependent parameters can be transformed into the well known completely integrable Manakov model described by coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave functions under certain conditions related to the time dependent parameters. We obtain the one-soliton solution and demonstrate the shape changing/matter redistribution interactions of two and three soliton solutions for the time independent expulsive harmonic trap potential, periodically modulated harmonic trap potential and kink-like modulated harmonic trap potential. The standard elastic collision of solitons occur only for a specific choice of soliton parameters.

Fortran programs for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in a fully anisotropic trap

We develop simple numerical algorithms for both stationary and non-stationary solutions of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describing the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates at ultra low temperatures. In particular, we consider algorithms involving real and imaginary-time propagation based on a split-step Crank-Nicolson method. In a one-space-variable form of the GP equation we consider the one-dimensional linear, two-dimensional circularly symmetric, and the three-dimensional spherically-symmetric traps. In the two-space-variable form we consider the GP equation in two-dimensional anisotropic and three-dimensional axially-symmetric traps. The fully-anisotropic three-dimensional GP equation is also considered. Numerical results for the chemical potential and root-mean-square size of stationary states are reported using imaginary-time propagation programs for all the cases and compared with previously obtained results. Also presented are numerical results of non-stationary oscillation for different trap symmetries using real-time propagation programs. A set of convenient working codes developed in Fortran 77 are also provided for all these cases (twelve programs in all). In the case of two or three space variables, {Fortran 90/95 versions provide some simplification over the Fortran 77 programs}, and these programs are also included (six programs in all).

Phase separation of binary condensates in harmonic and lattice potentials

We propose a modified Gaussian ansatz to study binary condensates, trapped in harmonic and optical lattice potentials, both in miscible and immiscible domains. The ansatz is an apt one as it leads to the smooth transition from miscible to immiscible domains without any {\em a priori} assumptions. In optical lattice potentials, we analyze the squeezing of the density profiles due to the increase in the depth of the optical lattice potential. For this we develop a model with three potential wells, and define the relationship between the lattice depth and profile of the condensate.

Position swapping and pinching in Bose-Fermi mixtures with two-color optical Feshbach resonances

We examine the density profiles of the quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb, experimental observed recently, in the mean field regime. In this mixture there is a possibility of tuning the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions simultaneously using two well separated optical Feshbach resonances, and it is a good candidate to explore phase separation in Bose-Fermi mixtures. Depending on the Bose-Bose scattering length $a_\BB$, as the Bose-Fermi interaction is tuned the density of the fermions is pinched or swapping with bosons occurs.

Localization of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

By numerical simulation and variational analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the localization, with an exponential tail, of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) of $^{52}$Cr atoms in a three-dimensional bichromatic optical-lattice (OL) generated by two monochromatic OL of incommensurate wavelengths along three orthogonal directions. For a fixed dipole-dipole interaction, a localized state of a small number of atoms ($\sim 1000$) could be obtained when the short-range interaction is not too attractive or not too repulsive. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of a DBEC with short-range interaction and dipole-dipole interaction is given.

Scaling and synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators

Chaos synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators driven by an external identical oscillator is studied. Based on numerical simulations we show that by introducing additional couplings at $(mN_c+1)$-th oscillators in the ring, where $m$ is an integer and $N_c$ is the maximum number of synchronized oscillators in the ring with a single coupling, the maximum number of oscillators that can be synchronized can be increased considerably beyond the limit restricted by size instability. We also demonstrate that there exists an exponential relation between the number of oscillators that can support stable synchronization in the ring with the external drive and the critical coupling strength $ε_c$ with a scaling exponent $γ$. The critical coupling strength is calculated by numerically estimating the synchronization error and is also confirmed from the conditional Lyapunov exponents (CLEs) of the coupled systems. We find that the same scaling relation exists for $m$ couplings between the drive and the ring. Further, we have examined the robustness of the synchronous states against Gaussian white noise and found that the synchronization error exhibits a power-law decay as a function of the noise intensity indicating the existence of both noise-enhanced and noise-induced synchronizations depending on the value of the coupling strength $ε$. In addition, we have found that $ε_c$ shows an exponential decay as a function of the number of additional couplings. These results are demonstrated using the paradigmatic models of Rössler and Lorenz oscillators.

Bright and dark solitons in a quasi 1D Bose-Einstein condensates modelled by 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time-dependent parameters

We investigate the exact bright and dark solitary wave solutions of an effective one dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by assuming that the interaction energy is much less than the kinetic energy in the transverse direction. In particular, following the earlier works in the literature Pérez-García et al. [Physica D 221 (2006) 31], Serkin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 (2007) 074102], Gürses [arXiv:0704.2435] and Kundu [Phys. Rev. E 79 (2009) 015601], we point out that the effective 1D equation res ulting from the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be transformed into the stand ard soliton (bright/dark) possessing, completely integrable 1D nonlinear Schrö dinger (NLS) equation by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave function. We consider both confining and expulsive harmonic trap potentials separately and treat the atomic scattering length, gain/loss term and trap frequency as the experimental control parameters by modulating them as a function of time. In the case when the trap frequency is kept constant, we show the existence of different kinds of soliton solutions, such as the periodic oscillating solitons, collapse and revival of condensate, snake-like solitons, stable solitons, soliton growth and decay and formation of two-soliton like bound state, as the atomic scattering length and gain/loss term are varied. However when the trap frequency is also modulated, we show the phenomena of collapse and revival of two-soliton like bound state formation of the condensate for double modulated periodic potential and bright and dark solitons for step-wise modulated potentials.

Interaction of dark-bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the interaction of dark-bright solitons in two component Bose-Einstein condensates by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length and atom gain or loss. We show that the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be mapped onto the Manakov model. An interesting class of matter wave solitons and their interaction are identified with time independent and periodically modulated trap potentials, which can be experimentally realized in two component condensates. These include periodic collapse and revival of solitons, and snake-like matter wave solitons as well as different kinds of two soliton interactions.

Nonstationary excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of periodically varying scattering length with time dependent frequencies

We investigate nonstationary excitations in 3D-Bose-Einstein condensates in a spherically symmetric trap potential under the modulation of scattering length with slowly varying frequencies (adiabatic modulation). By numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we observe a step-wise increase in the amplitude of oscillation due to successive phase locking between driving frequency and nonlinear frequency. Such a nonstationary excitation has been shown to exist by an analytic approach using variational procedure and perturbation theory in the action-angle variables. By using a canonical perturbation theory, we have identified the successive resonance excitations whenever the driven frequency matches the nonlinear frequency or its subharmonics.
