Transport in Carbon Nanotubes: 2LSU(2) regime reveals subtle competition between Kondo and Intermediate Valence states

In this work, we use three different numerical techniques to study the charge transport properties of a system in the two-level SU(2) (2LSU2) regime, obtained from an SU(4) model Hamiltonian by introducing orbital mixing of the degenerate orbitals via coupling to the leads. SU(4) Kondo physics has been experimentally observed, and studied in detail, in Carbon Nanotube Quantum Dots. Adopting a two molecular orbital basis, the Hamiltonian is recast into a form where one of the molecular orbitals decouples from the charge reservoir, although still interacting capacitively with the other molecular orbital. This basis transformation explains in a clear way how the charge transport in this system turns from double- to single-channel when it transitions from the SU(4) to the 2LSU2 regime. The charge occupancy of these molecular orbitals displays gate-potential-dependent occupancy oscillations that arise from a competition between the Kondo and Intermediate Valence states. The determination of whether the Kondo or the Intermediate Valence state is more favorable, for a specific value of gate potential, is assessed by the definition of an energy scale $T_0$, which is calculated through DMRG. We speculate that the calculation of $T_0$ may provide experimentalists with a useful tool to analyze correlated charge transport in many other systems. For that, a current work is underway to improve the numerical accuracy of its DRMG calculation and explore different definitions.

Transport properties of graphene nanoribbon heterostructures

We study the electronic and transport properties of heterostructures formed by armchair graphene nanoribbons with intersections of finite length. We describe the system by a tight-binding model and calculate the density of states and the conductance within the Green's function formalism based on real-space renormalization techniques. We show the apparition of interface states and bound states in the continuum which present a strong dependence of the heterostructure geometry. We investigate the effects on the conductance of an external perturbation applied on the edges atoms of the intersection region.

Transport in random quantum dot superlattices

We present a novel model to calculate single-electron states in random quantum dot superlattices made of wide-gap semiconductors. The source of disorder comes from the random arrangement of the quantum dots (configurational disorder) as well as spatial inhomogeneities of their shape (morphological disorder). Both types of disorder break translational symmetry and prevent the formation of minibands, as occurs in regimented arrays of quantum dots. The model correctly describes channel mixing and broadening of allowed energy bands due to elastic scattering by disorder.

Electron scattering on disordered double barrier GaAs-Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As heterostructures

We present a novel model to calculate vertical transport properties such as conductance and current in unintentionally disordered double barrier GaAs-Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As heterostructures. The source of disorder comes from interface roughness at the heterojunctions (lateral disorder) as well as spatial inhomogeneities of the Al mole fraction in the barriers (compositional disorder). Both lateral and compositional disorder break translational symmetry along the lateral direction and therefore electrons can be scattered off the growth direction. The model correctly describe channel mixing due to these elastic scattering events. In particular, for realistic degree of disorder, we have found that the effects of compositional disorder on transport properties are negligible as compared to the effects due to lateral disorder.

Time Dependent Current Oscillations Through a Quantum Dot

Time dependent phenomena associated to charge transport along a quantum dot in the charge quantization regime is studied. Superimposed to the Coulomb blockade behaviour the current has novel non-linear properties. Together with static multistabilities in the negative resistance region of the I-V characteristic curve, strong correlations at the dot give rise to self-sustained current and charge oscillations. Their properties depend upon the parameters of the quantum dot and the external applied voltages.

A mesoscopic Tera-hertz pulse detector

We show that, under the passage of an electromagnetic terahertz pulse, an asymmetric double barrier device may act as an on/off current switch, depending on the bias. The time-dependent response of the device is discussed.

Non Linear Effects in Resonant Tunneling Throught a Quantum Dot

We study non-linear phenomena in quantum dots. Non linearities are reflected in the I-V characteristic curve as bistabilities, instabilities and time dependent oscillations of the currents. The nature of the non-linear behavior depends upon the parameters that define the system.

Non-Linear Effects in Resonant Tunneling; Bistabilities and Self-Sustained Oscillating Currents

We study non-linear phenomena in double barrier heterostructures. Systems in 3D under the effect of an external magnetic field along the current and 1D systems are analyzed. Non-linearities are reflected in the I-V characteristic curve as bistabilities, instabilities and time dependent oscillations of the currents. The nature of the non-linear behavior depends upon the parameters that define the system.

Dynamic instabilities in resonant tunneling induced by a magnetic field

We show that the addition of a magnetic field parallel to the current induces self sustained intrinsic current oscillations in an asymmetric double barrier structure. The oscillations are attributed to the nonlinear dynamic coupling of the current to the charge trapped in the well, and the effect of the external field over the local density of states across the system. Our results show that the system bifurcates as the field is increased, and may transit to chaos at large enough fields.
