Melting upon cooling in a quantum magnet

Heating enhances thermal fluctuations and typically leads to melting of solids, but in exceptional cases, heating can also cause liquids to solidify. The paradigm of this counterintuitive phenomenon is solidification of liquid $^3$He upon increasing temperature, known as the Pomeranchuk effect. Here we show that such inverse melting also appears in quantum magnetism. We find that, on cooling, the Ising-like triangular-lattice antiferromagnet erbium heptatantalate first develops a three-sublattice long-range magnetic order -- analogous to a solid -- which then, unexpectedly, melts at even lower temperatures into a short-range correlated spin-stripe state -- analogous to a liquid. We propose that such an unprecedented ``spin Pomeranchuk effect" can generically arise from strong competition between spin-spin interactions in frustrated magnets, and provides a novel avenue to transformations between exotic magnetic phases.

Spin and energy diffusion vs. subdiffusion in disordered spin chains

While the high-temperature spin diffusion in spin chains with random local fields has been the subject of numerous studies concerning the phenomenon of many-body localization (MBL), the energy diffusion in the same models has been much less explored. We demonstrate that energy diffusion is faster at weak random fields but becomes essentially equal at strong fields; hence, both diffusions determine the slowest relaxation time scale (Thouless time) in the system. Numerically reachable finite-size systems reveal the anomalously large distribution of diffusion constants with respect to actual field configurations. Despite the exponential-like dependence of diffusion on field strength, the results for sensitivity to twisted boundary conditions are incompatible with the Thouless criterion for localization and the presumed transition to MBL, at least for numerically reachable sizes. In contrast, we find indications of the scenario of subdiffusive transport, particularly in the dynamical diffusivity response.

Emergent dipole moment conservation and subdiffusion in tilted chains

We study the transport dynamics of an interacting tilted (Stark) chain. We show that the crossover between diffusive and subdiffusive dynamics is governed by $F\sqrt{L}$, where $F$ is the strength of the field, and $L$ is the wave-length of the excitation. While the subdiffusive dynamics persist for large fields, the corresponding transport coefficient is exponentially suppressed with $F$ so that the finite-time dynamics appear almost frozen. We explain the crossover scale between the diffusive and subdiffusive transport by bounding the dynamics of the dipole moment for arbitrary initial state. We also prove its emergent conservation at infinite temperature. Consequently, the studied chain is one of the simplest experimentally realizable models for which numerical data are consistent with the hydrodynamics of fractons.

Slow diffusion and Thouless localization criterion in modulated spin chains

In recent years the ergodicity of disordered spin chains has been investigated via extensive numerical studies of the level statistics or the transport properties. However, a clear relationship between these results has yet to be established. We present the relation between the diffusion constant and the energy-level structure, which leads to the Thouless localization criterion. Together with the exponential-like dependence of the diffusion constant on the strength of quasiperiodic or random fields, the Thouless criterion explains the nearly linear drift with the system size of the crossover/transition to the nonergodic regime. Moreover, we show that the Heisenberg spin chain in the presence of the quasiperiodic fields can be well approached via a sequence of simple periodic systems, where diffusion remains finite even at large fields.

From dissipationless to normal diffusion in easy-axis Heisenberg spin chain

The anomalous spin diffusion of the integrable easy-axis Heisenberg chain originates in the ballistic transport of symmetry sectors with nonzero magnetization. Ballistic transport is replaced by normal dissipative transport in all magnetization sectors upon introducing the integrability-breaking perturbations, including external driving. Such behavior implies that the diffusion constant obtained for the integrable model is relevant for the spread of spin excitations but not for the spin conductivity. We present numerical results for closed systems and driven open systems, indicating that the diffusion constant shows a discontinuous variation as the function of perturbation strength.

Spin diffusion in perturbed isotropic Heisenberg spin chain

The isotropic Heisenberg chain represents a particular case of an integrable many-body system exhibiting superdiffusive spin transport at finite temperatures. Here, we show that this model has distinct properties also at finite magnetization $m\ne0$, even upon introducing the SU(2) invariant perturbations. Specifically, we observe nonmonotonic dependence of the diffusion constant ${\cal D}_0(Δ)$ on the spin anisotropy $Δ$, with a pronounced maximum at $Δ=1$. The latter dependence remains true also in the zero magnetization sector, with superdiffusion at $Δ=1$ that is remarkably stable against isotropic perturbation (at least in finite-size systems), consistent with recent experiments with cold atoms.

Multiple relaxation times in perturbed XXZ chain

We numerically study the relaxation of correlation functions in weakly perturbed integrable XXZ chain. The decay of the spin-current and the energy-current correlations at zero magnetization are well described by single, but quite distinct, relaxation rates governed by the square of the perturbation strength $g$. However, at finite magnetization a single correlation function reveals multiple relaxation rates. The result can be understood in terms of multi-scale relaxation scenario, where various relaxation times are linked with various quantities which are conserved in the reference integrable system. On the other hand, the correlations of non-commuting quantities, being conserved at particular anisotropies $Δ$, decay non-exponentially with characteristic time scale linear in $g$.

Relaxation at different length-scales in models of many-body localization

We study dynamical correlation functions in the random-field Heisenberg chain, which probes the relaxation times at different length scales. Firstly, we show that the relaxation time associated with the dynamical imbalance (examining the relaxation at the smallest length scale) decreases with disorder much faster than the one determined by the dc conductivity (probing the global response of the system). We argue that the observed dependence of relaxation on the length scale originates from local nonresonant regions. The latter have particularly long relaxation times or remain frozen, allowing for nonzero dc transport via higher-order processes. Based on the numerical evidence, we introduce a toy model that suggests that the nonresonant regions asymptotic dynamics are essential for the proper understanding of the disordered chains with many-body interactions.

Coexistence of diffusive and ballistic transport in integrable quantum lattice models

We investigate the high-temperature dynamical conductivity $σ(ω)$ in two one-dimensional integrable quantum lattice models: the anisotropic XXZ spin chain and the Hubbard chain. The emphasis is on the metallic regime of both models, where besides the ballistic component, the regular part of conductivity might reveal a diffusive-like transport. To resolve the low-frequency dynamics, we upgrade the microcanonical Lanczos method enabling studies of finite-size systems with up to $L\leq 32$ sites for XXZ spin model with the frequency resolution $δω\sim 10^{-3} J$. Results for the XXZ chain reveal a fine structure of $σ(ω)$ spectra, which originates from the discontinuous variation of the stiffness, previously found at commensurate values of the anisotropy parameter $Δ$. Still, we do not find a clear evidence for a diffusive component, at least not for commensurate values of $Δ$, particularly for $Δ=0.5$, as well as for $Δ\to 0$. Similar is the conclusion for the Hubbard model away from half-filling, where the spectra reveal more universal behavior.

Diffusion in the Anderson model in higher dimensions

We present an extended microcanonical Lanczos method (MCLM) for a direct evaluation of the diffusion constant and its frequency dependence within the disordered Anderson model of noninteracting particles. The method allows to study systems beyond $10^6$ sites of hypercubic lattices in $ d = 3- 7$ dimensions. Below the transition to localization, where we confirm dynamical scaling behavour, of interest is a wide region of incoherent diffusion, similar to percolating phenomena and to interacting many-body localized systems.

Many-body localization as a percolation phenomenon

We examine the standard model of many-body localization (MBL), i.e., the disordered chain of interacting spinless fermions, by representing it as the network in the many-body (MB) basis of noninteracting localized Anderson states. By studying eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian, for strong disorders we find that the dynamics is confined up to very long times to disconnected MB clusters in the Fock space. By keeping only resonant contributions and simplifying the quantum problem to rate equations (REs) for MB states, in analogy with percolation problems, the MBL transition is located via the universal cluster distribution and the emergence of the macroscopic cluster. On the ergodic side, our approximate RE approach to the relaxation processes captures well the diffusion transport, as found for the full quantum model. In a broad transient regime, we find an anomalous, i.e., subdiffusivelike, transport, emerging from weak links between MB states.

Dynamical spin correlations of the kagome antiferromagnet

Temperature-dependent dynamical spin correlations, which can be readily accessed via a variety of experimental techniques, hold the potential of offering a unique fingerprint of quantum spin liquids and other intriguing dynamical states. In this work we present an in-depth study of the temperature-dependent dynamical spin structure factor $S({\bf q}, ω)$ of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg spin-1/2 model on the kagome lattice with additional Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya (DM) interactions. Using the finite-temperature Lanczos method on lattices with up to $N = 30$ sites we find that even without DM interactions, chiral low-energy spin fluctuations of the $120^\circ$ AFM order parameter dominate the dynamical response. This leads to a nontrivial frequency dependence of $S({\bf q}, ω)$ and the appearance of a pronounced low-frequency mode at the M point of the extended Brillouin zone. Adding an out-of-plane DM interactions $D^z$ gives rise to an anisotropic dynamical response, a softening of in-plane spin fluctuations, and, ultimately, the onset of a coplanar AFM ground-state order at $D^z > 0.1 J$. Our results are in very good agreement with existing inelastic neutron scattering and temperature-dependent NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) data on the paradigmatic kagome AFM herbertsmithite, where the effect of its small $D^z$ on the dynamical spin correlations is shown to be rather small, as well as with $1/T_1$ data on the novel kagome AFM YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, where its substantial $D^z \approx 0.25 J$ interaction is found to strongly affect the spin dynamics.

Origin of Magnetic Ordering in a Structurally-Perfect Quantum Kagome Antiferromagnet

The ground state of the simple Heisenberg nearest-neighbor quantum kagome antiferromagnetic model is a magnetically disordered spin liquid, yet various perturbations may lead to fundamentally different states. Here we disclose the origin of magnetic ordering in the structurally-perfect kagome material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, which is free of the widespread impurity problem. {\it Ab-initio} calculations and modeling of its magnetic susceptibility reveal that, similar to the archetypal case of herbertsmithite, the nearest-neighbor exchange is by far the dominant isotropic interaction. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magnetic anisotropy deduced from electron spin resonance and specific-heat measurements is, however, significantly larger than in herbertsmithite. By enhancing spin correlations within kagome planes, this anisotropy is essential for magnetic ordering. Our study isolates the effect of DM anisotropy from other perturbations and unambiguously confirms the theoretical phase diagram.

Vanishing Wilson ratio as the hallmark of quantum spin-liquid models

We present numerical results for finite-temperature $T>0$ thermodynamic quantities, entropy $s(T)$, uniform susceptibility $χ_0(T)$ and the Wilson ratio $R(T)$, for several isotropic $S=1/2$ extended Heisenberg models which are prototype models for planar quantum spin liquids. We consider in this context the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ model on kagome, triangular, and square lattice, as well as the Heisenberg model on triangular lattice with the ring exchange. Our analysis reveals that typically in the spin-liquid parameter regimes the low-temperature $s(T)$ remains considerable, while $χ_0(T)$ is reduced consistent mostly with a triplet gap. This leads to vanishing $R(T \to 0)$, being the indication of macroscopic number of singlets lying below triplet excitations. This is in contrast to $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain, where $R(T \to 0)$ either remains finite in the gapless regime, or the singlet and triplet gap are equal in the dimerized regime.

Self-consistent approach to many-body localization and subdiffusion

An analytical theory, based on the perturbative treatment of the disorder and extended into a self-consistent set of equations for the dynamical density correlations, is developed and applied to the prototype one-dimensional model of many-body localization. Results show a qualitative agreement with numerically obtained dynamical structure factor in the whole range of frequencies and wavevectors, as well as across the transition to the nonergodic behavior. The theory reveals the singular nature of the one-dimensional problem, whereby on the ergodic side the dynamics is subdiffusive with dynamical conductivity $σ(ω) \propto |ω|^α$, i.e., with vanishing d.c. limit $σ_0=0$ and $α<1$ varying with disorder, while we get $α>1$ in the localized phase.

Density correlations and transport in models of many-body localization

We present a review of recent theoretical results concerning the many-body localization (MBL) phenomenon, with the emphasis on dynamical density correlations and transport quantities. They are shown to be closely related, providing a comprehensive description of the ergodic-to-nonergodic transition, consistent with experimental findings. While the focus is set mostly on the one-dimensional model of interacting spinless fermions, we also present evidence for the absence of full MBL in the one-dimensional Hubbard model and for the density-wave decay induced by the inter-chain coupling.

Absence of full many-body localization in the disordered Hubbard chain

We present numerical results within the one-dimensional disordered Hubbard model for several characteristic indicators of the many-body localization (MBL). Considering traditionally studied charge disorder (i.e., the same disorder strength for both spin orientations) we find that even at strong disorder all signatures consistently show that while charge degree of freedom is non-ergodic, the spin is delocalized and ergodic. This indicates the absence of the full MBL in the model that has been simulated in recent cold-atom experiments. Full localization can be restored if spin-dependent disorder is used instead.

Universal dynamics of density correlations at the transition to many-body localized state

Within one-dimensional disordered models of interacting fermions we perform a numerical study of several dynamical density correlations, which can serve as hallmarks of the transition to the many-body localized state. Results confirm that density-wave correlations exhibit quite abrupt change with the increasing disorder, with nonvanishing long-time value characteristic for nonergodic phase. In addition, our results reveal in a wide time-window a logarithmic variation of correlations in time, which we can bring in connection with the anomalous behavior of the dynamical conductivity near the transition. Our result support the view that transition to many-body localization can be characterized by universal dynamical exponents.
