Antiferromagnetic order in weakly coupled random spin chains

The ordering of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chains, as relevant for recent experimentally investigated spin chain materials, is considered theoretically. The one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model with random exchange interactions is treated numerically on finite chains with the density-matrix renormalization-group approach as well as with the standard renormalization analysis, both within the mean-field approximation for interchain coupling $J_{\perp}$. Results for the ordering temperature $T_N$ and for the ordered moment $m_0$ are presented and are both reduced with the increasing disorder agreeing with experimental observations. The most pronounced effect of the random singlet concept appears to be a very large span of local ordered moments, becoming wider with decreasing $J_{\perp}$, consistent with $μ$SR experimental findings.

Effective S=1/2 description of the S=1 chain with strong easy plane anisotropy

We present a study of the one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnetic spin chain with large easy plane anisotropy, with special emphasis on field-induced quantum phase transitions. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization, specific heat, and thermal conductivity is presented using a combination of numerical methods. In addition, the original S=1 model is mapped into the low-energy effective S=1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain, a model which is exactly solvable using the Bethe ansatz technique. The effectiveness of the mapping is explored, and we show that all considered quantities are in qualitative, and in some cases quantitative, agreement. The thermal conductivity of the considered S=1 model is found to be strongly influenced by the underlying effective description. Furthermore, we elucidate the low-lying electron spin resonance spectrum, based on a semi--analytical Bethe ansatz calculation of the effective S=1/2 model.

Local spin relaxation within the random Heisenberg chain

Finite-temperature local spin dynamics within the random spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied numerically. The aim is to explain measured NMR spin-lattice relaxation times in BaCu_{2}(Si_{0.5}Ge_{0.5})_{2}O_{7}, which is the realization of a random spin chain. In agreement with experiments we find that the distribution of relaxation times within the model shows a very large span similar to the stretched-exponential form. The distribution is strongly reduced with increasing T but stays finite also in the high-T limit. Our results reveal the crucial role of the anisotropy (interaction), since the behavior is essentially contrast with the ones for XX model (equivalent to noninteracting fermions), where we do not find any significant T dependence of the distribution.

Spin hydrodynamics in the S = 1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain

We study the finite-temperature dynamical spin susceptibility of the one-dimensional (generalized) anisotropic Heisenberg model within the hydrodynamic regime of small wave vectors and frequencies. Numerical results are analyzed using the memory function formalism with the central quantity being the spin-current decay rate gamma(q,omega). It is shown that in a generic nonintegrable model the decay rate is finite in the hydrodynamic limit, consistent with normal spin diffusion modes. On the other hand, in the gapless integrable model within the XY regime of anisotropy Delta < 1 the behavior is anomalous with vanishing gamma(q,omega=0) proportional to |q|, in agreement with dissipationless uniform transport. Furthermore, in the integrable system the finite-temperature q = 0 dynamical conductivity sigma(q=0,omega) reveals besides the dissipationless component a regular part with vanishing sigma_{reg}(q=0,omega to 0) to 0.

Coexistence of Anomalous and Normal Diffusion in Integrable Mott Insulators

We study the finite-momentum spin dynamics in the one-dimensional XXZ spin chain within the Ising-type regime at high temperatures using density autocorrelations within linear response theory and real-time propagation of nonequilibrium densities. While for the nonintegrable model results are well consistent with normal diffusion, the finite-size integrable model unveils the coexistence of anomalous and normal diffusion in different regimes of time. In particular, numerical results show a Gaussian relaxation at smallest nonzero momenta which we relate to nonzero stiffness in a grand canonical ensemble. For larger but still small momenta normal-like diffusion is recovered. Similar results for the model of impenetrable particles also help to resolve rather conflicting conclusions on transport in integrable Mott insulators.

Conductivity in a disordered one-dimensional system of interacting fermions

Dynamical conductivity in a disordered one-dimensional model of interacting fermions is studied numerically at high temperatures and in the weak-interaction regime in order to find a signature of many-body localization and vanishing d.c. transport coefficients. On the contrary, we find in the regime of moderately strong local disorder that the d.c. conductivity sigma0 scales linearly with the interaction strength while being exponentially dependent on the disorder. According to the behavior of the charge stiffness evaluated at the fixed number of particles, the absence of the many-body localization seems related to an increase of the effective localization length with the interaction.

Thermal transport in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to a (non) magnetic impurity

We explore the effect of a (non) magnetic impurity on the thermal transport of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model. This unique system allows to probe Kondo-type phenomena in a prototype strongly correlated system. Using numerical diagonalization techniques we study the scaling of the frequency dependent thermal conductivity with system size and host-impurity coupling strength as well as the dependence on temperature. We focus in particular on the analysis of cutting-healing of weak links or a magnetic impurity by the host chain via Kondo-like screening as the temperature is lowered.

Finite temperature transport in disordered Heisenberg chains

Using numerical diagonalization techniques, we explore the effect of local and bond disorder on the finite temperature spin and thermal conductivities of the one dimensional anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. High-temperature results for local disorder show that the dc conductivties are finite, apart from the uncorrelated - XY case - where dc transport vanishes. Moreover, at strong disorder, we find finite dc conductivities at all temperatures $T$, except T=0. The low frequency conductivities are characterized by a nonanalytic cusp shape. Similar behavior is found for bond disorder.
