From chiral spin liquids to skyrmion fluids and crystals, and their interplay with itinerant electrons

The physics of skyrmions, and in particular the issue of how to isolate and manipulate them individually, is a subject of major importance nowadays in the community of magnetism. In this article we present an in-depth extension of a study on this issue that was recently proposed by some of the authors [H. D. Rosales, et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{130}, 106703 (2023)]. More precisely, we analyse the competition between skyrmions and a chiral spin liquid in a model on the kagome lattice. We first present an analytical overview of the low-energy states using the Luttinger-Tisza approximation. We then study the effect of thermal fluctuations thanks to large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations, and explore the entire parameter space with a magnetic field $B$, in-plane $D^{xy}$ and out-of-plane $D^z$ Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. While skyrmions and the chiral spin liquid live in different regions of the parameter space, we show how to bring them together, stabilizing a skyrmion fluid in between; a region where the density of well-defined skyrmions can be tuned before obtaining an ordered phase. We investigate in particular the melting of the skyrmion solid. Our analysis also brings to light a long-range ordered phase with Z$_3$ symmetry. At last, we initiate the study of this rich magnetic background on conduction electrons that are coupled to the local spins. We study how the different chiral magnetic textures stabilized in this model (skyrmion solid, liquid and gas and chiral spin liquid) induce a topological Quantum Hall effect. We observe in the ordered skyrmion phase the appearance of Landau levels which persist even in the skyrmion-liquid regime and gradually disappear as the skyrmion density decreases to form a gas.

An effective field theory approach for the $S = 3/2$ bilayer honeycomb antiferromagnet

The spin-3/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the bilayer honeycomb lattice is a minimal model to describe the magnetic behavior of Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$). We study this model with frustrating inter-layer second-neighbor couplings, taking into account quantum and thermal fluctuations. We use a path integral formulation in terms of coherent states to describe the low energy physics of the model. We show that for a particular point in the parameter space, close to the experimental estimated couplings, a continuum classical degeneracy is lifted by both quantum and thermal fluctuations, and a collinear state is then selected by an order by disorder mechanism. Our results provide a global perspective in the understanding of the experimental observations.

Current jumps in flat band ladders with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Localized magnons states, due to flat bands in the spectrum, is an intensely studied phenomenon and can be found in many frustrated magnets of different spatial dimensionality. The presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions may change radically the behavior in such systems. In this context, we study a paradigmatic example of a one-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet, the sawtooth chain in the presence of DM interactions. Using both path integrals methods and numerical Density Matrix Renormalization Group, we revisit the physics of localized magnons and determine the consequences of the DM interaction on the ground state. We have studied the spin current behavior, finding three different regimes. First, a Luttinger-liquid regime where the spin current shows a step behavior as a function of parameter $D$, at a low magnetic field. Increasing the magnetic field, the system is in the Meissner phase at the $m = 1/2$ plateau, where the spin current is proportional to the DM parameter. Finally, further increasing the magnetic field and for finite $D$ there is a small stiffness regime where the spin current shows, at fixed magnetization, a jump to large values at $D = 0$, a phenomenon also due to the flat band.

Magnon crystals and magnetic phases in a Kagomé-stripe antiferromagnet

In this work we analyze the magnetization properties of an antiferromagnetic Kagomé stripe lattice, motivated by the recent synthesis of materials exhibiting this structure. By employing a variety of techniques that include numerical methods as Density Matrix Renormalization Group and Monte Carlo simulations, as well as analytical techniques, as perturbative low energy effective models and exact solutions, we characterize the magnetization process and magnetic phase diagram of a Kagomé stripe lattice. The model captures a variety of behaviors present in the two dimensional Kagomé lattice, which are described here by analytical models and numerically corroborated. In addition to the characterization of semiclassical intermediate plateaus, it is worth noting the determination of an exact magnon crystal phase which breaks the underlying symmetry of the lattice. This magnon crystal phase generalizes previous findings and according to our knowledge is reported here for the first time.

From frustrated magnetism to spontaneous Chern insulators

We study the behaviour of electrons interacting with a classical magnetic background via a strong Hund coupling. The magnetic background results from a Hamiltonian which favours at low temperature the emergence of a phase with non-zero scalar chirality. The strong Hund's coupling combined with the total chirality of the classical spins induces in the electrons an effective flux which results in the realisation of a band structure with non zero Chern number. First, we consider as a magnetic background a classical spin system with spontaneous net chirality. We study the Density of States (DoS) and Hall conductance in order to analyse the topological transitions, as a function of the Fermi energy and the temperature of the classical spins. We also study a similar model in which the Chern number of the filled bands can be "tuned" with the external magnetic field, resulting in a topological insulator in which the direction of the chiral edge mode can be reverted by reversing the orientantion of the magnetic field applied to the classical magnetic system.

Degenerate and chiral states in the extended Heisenberg model in the kagome lattice

We present a study of the low temperature phases of the antiferromagnetic extended classical Heisenberg model in the kagome lattice, up to third nearest neighbors. First, we focus on the degenerate lines in the boundaries of the well-known staggered chiral phases. These boundaries have either semi-extensive or extensive degeneracy, and we discuss the partial selection of states by thermal fluctuations. Then, we study the model under an external magnetic field on these lines and in the staggered chiral phases. We pay particular attention to the highly frustrated point, where the three exchange couplings are equal. We show that this point can me mapped to a model with spin liquid behavior and non-zero chirality. Finally, we explore the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in two ways: an homogeneous and a staggered DM interaction. In both cases, there is a rich low temperature phase diagram, with different spontaneously broken symmetries and non trivial chiral phases.

Selection of factorizable ground state in a frustrated spin tube: Order by disorder and hidden ferromagnetism

The interplay between frustration and quantum fluctuation in magnetic systems is known to be the origin of many exotic states in condensed matter physics. In this paper, we consider a frustrated four-leg spin tube under a magnetic field. This system is a prototype to study the emergence of a nonmagnetic ground state factorizable into local states and the associated order parameter without quantum fluctuation, that appears in a wide variety of frustrated systems. The one-dimensional nature of the system allows us to apply various techniques: a path-integral formulation based on the notion of order by disorder, strong-coupling analysis where magnetic excitations are gapped, and density-matrix renormalization group. All methods point toward an interesting property of the ground state in the magnetization plateaus, namely, a quantized value of relative magnetizations between different sublattices (spin imbalance) and an almost perfect factorization of the ground state.

Diagnosing order by disorder in quantum spin systems

In this paper we study the frustrated J1-J2 quantum Heisenberg model on the square lattice for J2 > 2J1, in a magnetic field. In this regime the classical system is known to have a degenerate manifold of lowest energy configurations, where standard thermal order by disorder occurs. In order to study its quantum version we use a path integral formulation in terms of coherent states. We show that the classical degeneracy in the plane transverse to the magnetic field is lifted by quantum fluctuations. Collinear states are then selected, in a similar pattern to that set by thermal order by disorder, leaving a Z2 degeneracy. A careful analysis reveals a purely quantum mechanical effect given by the tunneling between the two minima selected by fluctuations. The effective description contains two planar (XY -like) fields conjugate to the total magnetization and the difference of the two sublattice magnetizations. Disorder in either or both of these fields produces the locking of their conjugate observables. Furthermore, within this scenario we argue that the quantum state is close to a product state.

Statistics of holes and nature of superfluid phases in Quantum dimer models

Quantum Dimer Models (QDM) arise as low energy effective models for frustrated magnets. Some of these models have proven successful in generating a scenario for exotic spin liquid phases with deconfined spinons. Doping, i.e. the introduction of mobile holes, has been considered within the QDM framework and partially studied. A fundamental issue is the possible existence of a superconducting phase in such systems and its properties. For this purpose, the question of the statistics of the mobile holes (or "holons") shall be addressed first. Such issues are studied in details in this paper for generic doped QDM defined on the most common two-dimensional lattices (square, triangular, honeycomb, kagome,...) and involving general resonant loops. We prove a general "statistical transmutation" symmetry of such doped QDM by using composite operators of dimers and holes. This exact transformation enables to define duality equivalence classes (or families) of doped QDM, and provides the analytic framework to analyze dynamical statistical transmutations. We discuss various possible superconducting phases of the system. In particular, the possibility of an exotic superconducting phase originating from the condensation of (bosonic) charge-e holons is examined. A numerical evidence of such a superconducting phase is presented in the case of the triangular lattice, by introducing a novel gauge-invariant holon Green's function. We also make the connection with a Bose-Hubbard model on the kagome lattice which gives rise, as an effective model in the limit of strong interactions, to a doped QDM on the triangular lattice.

Broken discrete symmetries in a frustrated honeycomb antiferromagnet

We study the magnetic phase diagram of the $J_1$--$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice at the strongly frustrated point $J_2/J_1=1/2$ using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. At low temperatures we find three different field regimes, each characterized by different broken discrete symmetries. In low magnetic fields up to $h_{c1}/J_1\approx 2.9$ the $Z_3$ rotational lattice symmetry is spontaneously broken while a 1/2-magnetization plateau is stabilized around $h_{c2}/J_1=4$. The collinear plateau state and the coplanar state in higher fields break the $Z_4$ translational symmetry and correspond to triple-$q$ magnetic structures. The intermediate phase $h_{c1}<h<h_{c2}$ has an interesting symmetry structure, breaking simultaneously the $Z_3$ and $Z_4$ symmetries. At much lower temperatures the spatial broken discrete symmetries coexist with the quasi long-range order of the transverse spin components.

Statistical transmutation in doped quantum dimer models

We prove a "statistical transmutation" symmetry of doped quantum dimer models on the square, triangular and kagome lattices: the energy spectrum is invariant under a simultaneous change of statistics (i.e. bosonic into fermionic or vice-versa) of the holes and of the signs of all the dimer resonance loops. This exact transformation enables to define duality equivalence between doped quantum dimer Hamiltonians, and provides the analytic framework to analyze dynamical statistical transmutations. We investigate numerically the doping of the triangular quantum dimer model, with special focus on the topological Z2 dimer liquid. Doping leads to four (instead of two for the square lattice) inequivalent families of Hamiltonians. Competition between phase separation, superfluidity, supersolidity and fermionic phases is investigated in the four families.

Combined analytical and numerical approach to magnetization plateaux in one-dimensional spin tube antiferromagnets

In this paper, we investigate the properties of frustrated three-leg spin tubes under a magnetic field. We concentrate on two kind of geometries for these tubes, one of which is relevant for the compound $\mathrm{[(CuCl_2tachH)_3Cl]Cl_2}$. We combine an analytical path integral approach with a strong coupling approach, as well as large-scale Density Matrix Renormalization Groups (DMRG) simulations, to identify the presence of plateaux in the magnetization curve as a function of the value of spin $S$. We also investigate the issue of gapless non-magnetic excitations on some plateaux, dubbed chirality degrees of freedom for both tubes.

Order by disorder and phase transitions in a highly frustrated spin model on the triangular lattice

Frustration has proved to give rise to an extremely rich phenomenology in both quantum and classical systems. The leading behavior of the system can often be described by an effective model, where only the lowest-energy degrees of freedom are considered. In this paper we study a system corresponding to the strong trimerization limit of the spin 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet in a magnetic field. It has been suggested that this system can be realized experimentally by a gas of spinless fermions in an optical kagome lattice at 2/3 filling. We investigate the low-energy behavior of both the spin 1/2 quantum version and the classical limit of this system by applying various techniques. We study in parallel both signs of the coupling constant J since the two cases display qualitative differences. One of the main peculiarities of the J>0 case is that, at the classical level, there is an exponentially large manifold of lowest-energy configurations. This renders the thermodynamics of the system quite exotic and interesting in this case. For both cases, J>0 and J<0, a finite-temperature phase transition with a breaking of the discrete dihedral symmetry group D_6 of the model is present. For J<0, we find a transition temperature T^<_c/|J| = 1.566 +/- 0.005, i.e., of order unity, as expected. We then analyze the nature of the transition in this case. While we find no evidence for a discontinuous transition, the interpretation as a continuous phase transition yields very unusual critical exponents violating the hyperscaling relation. By contrast, in the case J>0 the transition occurs at an extremely low temperature, T^>_c ~= 0.0125 J. Presumably this low transition temperature is connected with the fact that the low-temperature ordered state of the system is established by an order-by-disorder mechanism in this case.

Combined analytical and numerical approach to study magnetization plateaux in doped quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets

We investigate the magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin-S antiferromagnets. We use a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to study the presence of plateaux in the magnetization curve. The analytical technique consists in a path integral formulation in terms of coherent states. This technique can be extended to the presence of doping and has the advantage of a much better control for large spins than the usual bosonization technique. We discuss the appearance of doping-dependent plateaux in the magnetization curves for spin-S chains and ladders. The analytical results are complemented by a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study for a trimerized spin-1/2 and anisotropic spin-3/2 doped chains.

Quantum phase transitions in three-leg spin tubes

We investigate the properties of a three-leg quantum spin tube using several techniques such as the density matrix renormalization group method, strong coupling approaches and the non linear sigma model. For integer spins S, the model proves to exhibit a particularly rich phase diagram consisting of an ensemble of 2S phase transitions. They can be accurately identified by the behavior of a non local string order parameter associated to the breaking of a hidden symmetry in the Hamiltonian. The nature of these transitions are further elucidated within the different approaches. We carry a detailed DMRG analysis in the specific cases S = 1. The numerical data confirm the existence of two Haldane phases with broken hidden symmetry separated by a trivial singlet state. The study of the gap and of the von Neumann entropy suggest a first order phase transition but at the close proximity of a tricritical point separating a gapless and a first order transition line in the phase diagram of the quantum spin tube.

Magnetization Process of the Classical Heisenberg Model on the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice

We investigate classical Heisenberg spins on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice and under an external magnetic field. A detailed study is carried out both analytically and numerically by means of classical Monte-Carlo simulations. Magnetization pseudo-plateaux are observed around 1/3 of the saturation magnetization for a range of values of the magnetic couplings. We show that the existence of the pseudo-plateau is due to an entropic selection of a particular collinear state. A phase diagram that shows the domains of existence of those pseudo-plateaux in the $(h, T)$ plane is obtained.

Magnetization plateaux in the classical Shastry-Sutherland lattice

We investigated the classical Shastry-Sutherland lattice under an external magnetic field in order to understand the recently discovered magnetization plateaux in the rare-earth tetraborides compounds RB$_4$. A detailed study of the role of thermal fluctuations was carried out by mean of classical spin waves theory and Monte-Carlo simulations. Magnetization quasi-plateaux were observed at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization at non zero temperature. We showed that the existence of these quasi-plateaux is due to an entropic selection of a particular collinear state. We also obtained a phase diagram that shows the domains of existence of different spin configurations in the magnetic field versus temperature plane.

Gauge theory picture of an ordering transition in a dimer model

We study a phase transition in a 3D lattice gauge theory, a "coarse-grained" version of a classical dimer model. Duality arguments indicate that the dimer lattice theory should be dual to a XY model coupled to a gauge field with geometric frustration. The transition between a Coulomb phase with dipolar correlations and a long range ordered columnar phase is understood in terms of a Higgs mechanism. Monte Carlo simulations of the dual model indicate a continuous transition with exponents close but apparently different from those of the 3d XY model. The continuous nature of the transition is confirmed by a flowgram analysis.
