Bosonization and density-matrix renormalization group studies of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase and irrational magnetization plateaus in coupled chains

We review the properties of two coupled fermionic chains, or ladders, under a magnetic field parallel to the lattice plane. Results are computed by complementary analytical (bosonization) and numerical (density-matrix renormalization group) methods which allows a systematic comparison. Limiting cases such as coupled bands and coupled chains regimes are discussed. We particularly focus on the evolution of the superconducting correlations under increasing field and on the presence of irrational magnetization plateaus. We found the existence of large doping-dependent magnetization plateaus in the weakly-interacting and strong-coupling limits and in the non-trivial case of isotropic couplings. We report on the existence of extended Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases within the isotropic t-J and Hubbard models, deduced from the evolution of different observables under magnetic field. Emphasis is put on the variety of superconducting order parameters present at high magnetic field. We have also computed the evolution of the Luttinger exponent corresponding to the ungaped spin mode appearing at finite magnetization. In the coupled chain regime, the possibility of having polarized triplet pairing under high field is predicted by bosonization.

Criticality of a classical dimer model on the triangular lattice

We consider a classical interacting dimer model which interpolates between the square lattice case and the triangular lattice case by tuning a chemical potential in the diagonal bonds. The interaction energy simply corresponds to the number of plaquettes with parallel dimers. Using transfer matrix calculations, we find in the anisotropic triangular case a succession of different physical phases as the interaction strength is increased: a short range disordered liquid dimer phase at low interactions, then a critical phase similar to the one found for the square lattice, and finally a transition to an ordered columnar phase for large interactions. The existence of the critical phase is in contrast with the belief that criticality for dimer models is ascribed to bipartiteness. For the isotropic triangular case, we have indications that the system undergoes a first order phase transition to an ordered phase, without appearance of an intermediate critical phase.

Finite-temperature ordering in a two-dimensional highly frustrated spin model

We investigate the classical counterpart of an effective Hamiltonian for a strongly trimerized kagome lattice. Although the Hamiltonian only has a discrete symmetry, the classical groundstate manifold has a continuous global rotational symmetry. Two cases should be distinguished for the sign of the exchange constant. In one case, the groundstate has a 120^\circ spin structure. To determine the transition temperature, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations and measure specific heat, the order parameter as well as the associated Binder cumulant. In the other case, the classical groundstates are macroscopically degenerate. A thermal order-by-disorder mechanism is predicted to select another 120^\circ spin-structure. A finite but very small transition temperature is detected by Monte-Carlo simulations using the exchange method.

Ice: a strongly correlated proton system

We discuss the problem of proton motion in Hydrogen bond materials with special focus on ice. We show that phenomenological models proposed in the past for the study of ice can be recast in terms of microscopic models in close relationship to the ones used to study the physics of Mott-Hubbard insulators. We discuss the physics of the paramagnetic phase of ice at 1/4 filling (neutral ice) and its mapping to a transverse field Ising model and also to a gauge theory in two and three dimensions. We show that H3O+ and HO- ions can be either in a confined or deconfined phase. We obtain the phase diagram of the problem as a function of temperature T and proton hopping energy t and find that there are two phases: an ordered insulating phase which results from an order-by-disorder mechanism induced by quantum fluctuations, and a disordered incoherent metallic phase (or plasma). We also discuss the problem of decoherence in the proton motion introduced by the lattice vibrations (phonons) and its effect on the phase diagram. Finally, we suggest that the transition from ice-Ih to ice-XI observed experimentally in doped ice is the confining-deconfining transition of our phase diagram.

Quantum kagome antiferromagnet in a magnetic field: Low-lying non-magnetic excitations versus valence-bond crystal order

We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation and the nature of its ground state. We discuss fluctuations around classical ground states and argue that quantum and classical calculations at the harmonic level do not lead to the same result in contrast to the zero-field case. For spin S=1/2 we find a magnetic gap below which an exponential number of non-magnetic excitations are present. Moreover, such non-magnetic excitations also have a (much smaller) gap above the three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide evidence that the ground state has long-range order of valence-bond crystal type with nine spins in the unit cell.

Ground state and low-lying excitations of the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the kagome lattice at magnetization 1/3

We study the ground state and low-lying excitations of the S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at magnetization one third of the saturation. An exponential number of non-magnetic states is found below a magnetic gap. The non-magnetic excitations also have a gap above the ground state, but it is much smaller than the magnetic gap. This ground state corresponds to an ordered pattern with resonances in one third of the hexagons. The spin-spin correlation function is short ranged, but there is long-range order of valence-bond crystal type.

Ground states of quantum kagome antiferromagnets in a magnetic field

We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet in the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation. While the plateau is reinforced by certain deformations of the lattice, like the introduction of structural defect lines and against an Ising anisotropy, ground state correlations are seen to be quite different and the undistorted SU(2) case appears to be rather special.

Dynamical obstruction in a constrained system and its realization in lattices of superconducting devices

Hard constraints imposed in statistical mechanics models can lead to interesting thermodynamical behaviors, but may at the same time raise obstructions in the thoroughfare to thermal equilibration. Here we study a variant of Baxter's 3-color model in which local interactions and defects are included, and discuss its connection to triangular arrays of Josephson junctions of superconductors and \textit{kagomé} networks of superconducting wires. The model is equivalent to an Ising model in a hexagonal lattice with the constraint that the magnetization of each hexagon is $\pm 6$ or 0. For ferromagnetic interactions, we find that the system is critical for a range of temperatures (critical line) that terminates when it undergoes an exotic first order phase transition with a jump from a zero magnetization state into the fully magnetized state at finite temperature. Dynamically, however, we find that the system becomes frozen into domains. The domain walls are made of perfectly straight segments, and domain growth appears frozen within the time scales studied with Monte Carlo simulations. This dynamical obstruction has its origin in the topology of the allowed reconfigurations in phase space, which consist of updates of closed loops of spins. As a consequence of the dynamical obstruction, there exists a dynamical temperature, lower than the (avoided) static critical temperature, at which the system is seen to jump from a ``supercooled liquid'' to a ``polycrystalline'' phase. In contrast, for antiferromagnetic interactions, we argue that the system orders for infinitesimal coupling because of the constraint, and we observe no interesting dynamical effects.

Nishimori point in random-bond Ising and Potts models in 2D

We study the universality class of the fixed points of the 2D random bond q-state Potts model by means of numerical transfer matrix methods. In particular, we determine the critical exponents associated with the fixed point on the Nishimori line. Precise measurements show that the universality class of this fixed point is inconsistent with percolation on Potts clusters for q=2, corresponding to the Ising model, and q=3

From classical to quantum Kagome antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

We study the magnetic properties of the Kagome antiferromagnet going from the classical limit to the deep quantum regime of spin 1/2 systems. In all the cases there are special values for the magnetization, 1/3 in particular, in which a singular behavior is observed to occur in both the classical and quantum cases. We show clear evidence for a magnetization plateau for the spin 1/2 case in a wide range of XXZ anisotropies and for the occurrence of quantum order by disorder effects.

Site-centered impurities in quantum spin chains

The magnetic behavior of antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chains with site-centered impurities in a magnetic field is investigated. The effect of impurities is implemented by considering different situations of both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. The resulting magnetization curves present a wide variety of plateaux, whose position strongly depends on the kind of disorder considered. The relevance of these results to experimental situations is also discussed.

Nishimori point in the 2D +/- J random-bond Ising model

We study the universality class of the Nishimori point in the 2D +/- J random-bond Ising model by means of the numerical transfer-matrix method. Using the domain-wall free-energy, we locate the position of the fixed point along the Nishimori line at the critical concentration value p_c = 0.1094 +/- 0.0002 and estimate nu = 1.33 +/- 0.03. Then, we obtain the exponents for the moments of the spin-spin correlation functions as well as the value for the central charge c = 0.464 +/- 0.004. The main qualitative result is the fact that percolation is now excluded as a candidate for describing the universality class of this fixed point.

Emergence of Irrationality: Magnetization Plateaux in Modulated Hubbard Chains

Hubbard chains with periodically modulated coupling constants in a magnetic field exhibit gaps at zero temperature in their magnetic and charge excitations in a variety of situations. In addition to fully gapped situations (plateau in the magnetization curve and charge gap), we have shown [cond-mat/9908398] that plateaux also appear in the presence of massless modes, leading to a plateau with a magnetization m whose value depends continuously on the filling n. Here we detail and extend the arguments leading to such doping-dependent magnetization plateaux. First we analyze the low-lying excitations using Abelian bosonization. We compute the susceptibility and show that due to the constraint of fixed n, it vanishes at low temperatures (thus leading to a magnetization plateau) even in the presence of one massless mode. Next we study correlation functions and show that one component of the superconducting order parameter develops quasi-long-range order on a doping-dependent magnetization plateau. We then use perturbation theory in the on-site repulsion U to compute the width of these plateaux up to first order in U. Finally, we compute groundstate phase diagrams and correlation functions by Lanczos diagonalization of finite clusters, confirming the presence of doping-dependent plateaux and their special properties.

Hubbard ladders in a magnetic field

The behavior of a two leg Hubbard ladder in the presence of a magnetic field is studied by means of Abelian bosonization. We predict the appearance of a new (doping dependent) plateau in the magnetization curve of a doped 2-leg spin ladder in a wide range of couplings. We also discuss the extension to N-leg Hubbard ladders.

Random bond XXZ chains with modulated couplings

The magnetization behavior of q-periodic antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chains under uniform magnetic fields is investigated in a background of disorder exchange distributions. By means of both real space decimation procedures and numerical diagonalizations in XX chains, it is found that for binary disorder the magnetization exhibits wide plateaux at values of 1+2(p-1)/q, where p is the disorder strength. In contrast, no spin gaps are observed in the presence of continuous exchange distributions. We also study the magnetic susceptibility at low magnetic fields. For odd q-modulations the susceptibility exhibits a universal singularity, whereas for q even it displays a non-universal power law behavior depending on the parameters of the distribution.

Doping-dependent magnetization plateaux in p-merized Hubbard chains

We study zero-temperature Hubbard chains with periodically modulated hopping at arbitrary filling n and magnetization m. We show that the magnetization curves have plateaux at certain values of m which depend on the periodicity p and the filling. At commensurate filling n a charge gap opens and then magnetization plateaux correspond to fully gapped situations. However, plateaux also arise in the magnetization curves at fixed n between the commensurate values and then the plateau-value of of m depends continuously on n and can thus also become irrational. In particular for the case of dimerized hopping (p=2) and fixed doping we find that a plateau appears at m=1-n. In this case, there is still a gapless mode on the plateau leading to thermodynamic behavior which is different from a completely gapped situation.

Magnetic Properties of Zig-Zag Ladders

We analyze the phase diagram of a system of spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains interacting through a zig-zag coupling, also called zig-zag ladders. Using bosonization techniques we study how a spin-gap or more generally plateaux in magnetization curves arise in different situations. While for coupled XXZ chains, one has to deal with a recently discovered chiral perturbation, the coupling term which is present for normal ladders is restored by an external magnetic field, dimerization or the presence of charge carriers. We then proceed with a numerical investigation of the phase diagram of two coupled Heisenberg chains in the presence of a magnetic field. Unusual behaviour is found for ferromagnetic coupled antiferromagnetic chains. Finally, for three (and more) legs one can choose different inequivalent types of coupling between the chains. We find that the three-leg ladder can exhibit a spin-gap and/or non-trivial plateaux in the magnetization curve whose appearance strongly depends on the choice of coupling.
