Particle-vibration coupling within covariant density functional theory

Covariant density functional theory, which has so far been applied only within the framework of static and time dependent mean field theory is extended to include Particle-Vibration Coupling (PVC) in a consistent way. Starting from a conventional energy functional we calculate the low-lying collective vibrations in Relativistic Random Phase Approximation (RRPA) and construct an energy dependent self-energy for the Dyson equation. The resulting Bethe-Salpeter equation in the particle-hole ($ph$) channel is solved in the Time Blocking Approximation (TBA). No additional parameters are used and double counting is avoided by a proper subtraction method. The same energy functional, i.e. the same set of coupling constants, generates the Dirac-Hartree single-particle spectrum, the static part of the residual $ph$-interaction and the particle-phonon coupling vertices. Therefore a fully consistent description of nuclear excited states is developed. This method is applied for an investigation of damping phenomena in the spherical nuclei with closed shells $^{208}$Pb and $^{132}$Sn. Since the phonon coupling terms enrich the RRPA spectrum with a multitude of $ph\otimes$phonon components a noticeable fragmentation of the giant resonances is found, which is in full agreement with experimental data and with results of the semi-phenomenological non-relativistic approach.

Neutron density distributions from antiprotonic 208Pb and 209Bi atoms

The X-ray cascade from antiprotonic atoms was studied for 208Pb and 209Bi. Widths and shifts of the levels due to the strong interaction were determined. Using modern antiproton-nucleus optical potentials the neutron densities in the nuclear periphery were deduced. Assuming two parameter Fermi distributions (2pF) describing the proton and neutron densities the neutron rms radii were deduced for both nuclei. The difference of neutron and proton rms radii /\r_np equal to 0.16 +-(0.02)_{stat} +- (0.04)_{syst} fm for 208Pb and 0.14 +- (0.04)_{stat} +- (0.04)_{syst} fm for 209Bi were determined and the assigned systematic errors are discussed. The /\r_np values and the deduced shapes of the neutron distributions are compared with mean field model calculations.

Relativistic RPA plus phonon-coupling analysis of pygmy dipole resonances

The relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA) plus phonon-coupling (PC) model is applied in the analysis of E1 strength distributions in $^{208}$Pb and $^{132}$Sn, for which data on pygmy dipole resonances (PDR) have recently been reported. The covariant response theory is fully consistent: the effective nuclear interaction NL3 is used both to determine the spectrum of single-nucleon Dirac states, and as the residual interaction which determines the collective phonon states in the relativistic RPA. It is shown that the picture of the PDR as a resonant oscillation of the neutron skin against the isospin saturated proton-neutron core, and with the corresponding RRPA state characterized by a coherent superposition of many neutron particle-hole configurations, remains essentially unchanged when particle-vibration coupling is included. The effect of two-phonon admixtures is a weak fragmentation and a small shift of PDR states to lower excitation energy. Even though the PDR calculated in the extended model space of $ph \otimes$phonon configurations contains sizeable two-phonon admixtures, it basically retains a one-phonon character and its dynamics is not modified by the coupling to low-lying surface vibrations.

Calculation of beta-decay rates in a relativistic model with momentum-dependent self-energies

The relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (PN-RQRPA) is applied in the calculation of beta-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei in the $Z\approx 28$ and $Z\approx 50$ regions. The study is based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculation of nuclear ground-states, using effective Lagrangians with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings, and also extended by the inclusion of couplings between the isoscalar meson fields and the derivatives of the nucleon fields. This leads to a linear momentum dependence of the scalar and vector nucleon self-energies. The residual QRPA interaction in the particle-hole channel includes the $π+ ρ$ exchange plus a Landau-Migdal term. The finite-range Gogny interaction is employed in the T=1 pairing channel, and the model also includes a proton-neutron particle-particle interaction. The results are compared with available data, and it is shown that an extension of the standard relativistic mean-field framework to include momentum-dependent nucleon self-energies naturally leads to an enhancement of the effective (Landau) nucleon mass, and thus to an improved PN-QRPA description of beta-decay rates.

Beyond the relativistic mean-field approximation (II): configuration mixing of mean-field wave functions projected on angular momentum and particle number

The framework of relativistic self-consistent mean-field models is extended to include correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and to fluctuations of collective variables. The generator coordinate method is used to perform configuration mixing of angular-momentum and particle-number projected relativistic wave functions. The geometry is restricted to axially symmetric shapes, and the intrinsic wave functions are generated from the solutions of the relativistic mean-field + Lipkin-Nogami BCS equations, with a constraint on the mass quadrupole moment. The model employs a relativistic point-coupling (contact) nucleon-nucleon effective interaction in the particle-hole channel, and a density-independent $δ$-interaction in the pairing channel. Illustrative calculations are performed for $^{24}$Mg, $^{32}$S and $^{36}$Ar, and compared with results obtained employing the model developed in the first part of this work, i.e. without particle-number projection, as well as with the corresponding non-relativistic models based on Skyrme and Gogny effective interactions.

Covariant response theory beyond RPA and its application

The covariant particle-vibration coupling model within the time blocking approximation is employed to supplement the Relativistic Random Phase Approximation (RRPA) with coupling to collective vibrations. The Bethe-Salpeter equation in the particle-hole channel with an energy dependent residual particle-hole (p-h) interaction is formulated and solved in the shell-model Dirac basis as well as in the momentum space. The same set of the coupling constants generates the Dirac-Hartree single-particle spectrum, the static part of the residual p-h interaction and the particle-phonon coupling amplitudes. This approach is applied to quantitative description of damping phenomenon in even-even spherical nuclei with closed shells $^{208}$Pb and $^{132}$Sn. Since the phonon coupling enriches the RRPA spectrum with a multitude of ph$\otimes$phonon states a noticeable fragmentation of giant monopole and dipole resonances is obtained in the examined nuclei. The results are compared with experimental data and with results of the non-relativistic approach.

Relativistic QRPA description of isoscalar compression modes in open-shell nuclei in the A$\approx$60 mass region

Very recent inelastic $α$-scattering data on the isoscalar monopole and dipole strength distributions in $^{56}$Fe, $^{58}$Ni, and $^{60}$Ni are analyzed in the relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation (RQRPA) with the DD-ME2 effective nuclear interaction (nuclear matter compression modulus K$_{nm}= 251$ MeV). In all three nuclei the calculation nicely reproduces the observed asymmetric shapes of the monopole strength, and the bimodal structure of the dipole strength distributions. The calculated centroid and mean energies are in very good qualitative agreement with the experimental values both for the monopole, and for the low- and high-energy components of the dipole transition strengths. It is noted, however, that while DD-ME2 reproduces in detail the excitation energies of the giant monopole resonances (GMR) in nuclei with $A \ge 90$, the theoretical centroids are systematically above the experimental values in lighter nuclei with $A \leq 60$. The latter can be reproduced with an effective interaction with a lower value of K$_{nm} \approx $ 230 MeV but, because of the asymmetric shapes and pronounced fragmentation of the monopole strength distributions, isoscalar GMR data in light nuclei cannot provide accurate estimates of the nuclear matter compression modulus.

Covariant theory of particle-vibrational coupling and its effect on the single-particle spectrum

The Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) approach describing the motion of independent particles in effective meson fields is extended by a microscopic theory of particle vibrational coupling. It leads to an energy dependence of the relativistic mass operator in the Dyson equation for the single-particle propagator. This equation is solved in the shell-model of Dirac states. As a result of the dynamics of particle-vibrational coupling we observe a noticeable increase of the level density near the Fermi surface. The shifts of the single-particle levels in the odd nuclei surrounding 208-Pb and the corresponding distributions of the single-particle strength are discussed and compared with experimental data.

Beyond the relativistic mean-field approximation: configuration mixing of angular momentum projected wave functions

We report the first study of restoration of rotational symmetry and fluctuations of the quadrupole deformation in the framework of relativistic mean-field models. A model is developed which uses the generator coordinate method to perform configuration mixing calculations of angular momentum projected wave functions, calculated in a relativistic point-coupling model. The geometry is restricted to axially symmetric shapes, and the intrinsic wave functions are generated from the solutions of the constrained relativistic mean-field + BCS equations in an axially deformed oscillator basis. A number of illustrative calculations are performed for the nuclei 194Hg and 32Mg, in comparison with results obtained in non-relativistic models based on Skyrme and Gogny effective interactions.

Nuclear fusion in dense matter: Reaction rate and carbon burning

In this paper we analyze the nuclear fusion rate between equal nuclei for all five different nuclear burning regimes in dense matter (two thermonuclear regimes, two pycnonuclear ones, and the intermediate regime). The rate is determined by Coulomb barrier penetration in dense environments and by the astrophysical S-factor at low energies. We evaluate previous studies of the Coulomb barrier problem and propose a simple phenomenological formula for the reaction rate which covers all cases. The parameters of this formula can be varied, taking into account current theoretical uncertainties in the reaction rate. The results are illustrated for the example of the ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion reaction. This reaction is very important for the understanding of nuclear burning in evolved stars, in exploding white dwarfs producing type Ia supernovae, and in accreting neutron stars. The S-factor at stellar energies depends on a reliable fit and extrapolation of the experimental data. We calculate the energy dependence of the S-factor using a recently developed parameter-free model for the nuclear interaction, taking into account the effects of the Pauli nonlocality. For illustration, we analyze the efficiency of carbon burning in a wide range of densities and temperatures of stellar matter with the emphasis on carbon ignition at densities rho > 10^9 g/cc.

Random-phase approximation based on relativistic point-coupling models

The matrix equations of the random-phase approximation (RPA) are derived for the point-coupling Lagrangian of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. Fully consistent RMF plus (quasiparticle) RPA illustrative calculations of the isoscalar monopole, isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole response of spherical medium-heavy and heavy nuclei, test the phenomenological effective interactions of the point-coupling RMF model. A comparison with experiment shows that the best point-coupling effective interactions accurately reproduce not only ground-state properties, but also data on excitation energies of giant resonances.

The Proton Electric Pygmy Dipole Resonance

The evolution of the low-lying E1 strength in proton-rich nuclei is analyzed in the framework of the self-consistent relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model and the relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation (RQRPA). Model calculations are performed for a series of N=20 isotones and Z=18 isotopes. For nuclei close to the proton drip-line, the occurrence of pronounced dipole peaks is predicted in the low-energy region below 10 MeV excitation energy. From the analysis of the proton and neutron transition densities and the structure of the RQRPA amplitudes, it is shown that these states correspond to the proton pygmy dipole resonance.

Renormalized relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov equations with a zero-range pairing interaction

A recently introduced scheme for the renormalization of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations in the case of zero-range pairing interaction is extended to the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model. A density-dependent strength parameter of the zero-range pairing is adjusted in such a way that the renormalization procedure reproduces the empirical $^1S_0$ pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. The model is applied to the calculation of ground-state pairing properties of finite spherical nuclei.

Isotopic dependence of the pygmy dipole resonance

The isotopic dependence of the excitation energies of the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) is analyzed in the framework of the self-consistent relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model and the relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation (RQRPA). The DD-ME1 density-dependent meson-exchange interaction is used in the effective mean-field Lagrangian, and pairing correlations are described by the pairing part of the finite-range Gogny interaction D1S. Model calculations reproduce available experimental data on charge radii, the neutron skin, neutron separation energies, and excitation energies of isovector giant dipole resonances in Ni, Sn and Pb nuclei. In all three isotopic chains the one-neutron separation energies decrease with mass number much faster than the excitation energies of the PDR. As a result, already at moderate proton-neutron asymmetry the PDR peak energy is calculated above the neutron emission threshold. This result has important implications for the observation of the PDR in (gamma, gamma') experiments.

Beta-decay rates of r-process nuclei in the relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation

The fully consistent relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (PN-RQRPA) is employed in the calculation of beta-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei in the N$\approx$50 and N$\approx$82 regions. A new density-dependent effective interaction, with an enhanced value of the nucleon effective mass, is used in relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculation of nuclear ground states and in the particle-hole channel of the PN-RQRPA. The finite range Gogny D1S interaction is employed in the T=1 pairing channel, and the model also includes a proton-neutron particle-particle interaction. The theoretical half-lives reproduce the experimental data for the Fe, Zn, Cd, and Te isotopic chains, but overestimate the lifetimes of Ni isotopes and predict a stable 132Sn.

Relativistic description of exotic collective excitation phenomena in atomic nuclei

The low-lying dipole and quadrupole states in neutron rich nuclei, are studied within the fully self-consistent relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation (RQRPA), formulated in the canonical basis of the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model (RHB), which is extended to include the density dependent interactions. In heavier nuclei, the low-lying E1 excited state is identified as a pygmy dipole resonance (PDR), i.e. as a collective mode of excess neutrons oscillating against a proton-neutron core. Isotopic dependence of the PDR is characterized by a crossing between the PDR and one-neutron separation energies. Already at moderate proton-neutron asymmetry the PDR peak is calculated above the neutron emission threshold, indicating important implications for the observation of the PDR in (gamma, gamma') scattering, and on the theoretical predictions of the radiative neutron capture rates in neutron-rich nuclei. In addition, a novel method is suggested for determining the neutron skin of nuclei, based on measurement of excitation energies of the Gamow-Teller resonance relative to the isobaric analog state.

Axially Deformed Solution of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov Equations using The Transformed Harmonic Oscillator Basis. The program HFBTHO (v1.66p)

We describe the program HFBTHO for axially deformed configurational Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with Skyrme-forces and zero-range pairing interaction using Harmonic-Oscillator and/or Transformed Harmonic-Oscillator states. The particle-number symmetry is approximately restored using the Lipkin-Nogami prescription, followed by an exact particle number projection after the variation. The program can be used in a variety of applications, including systematic studies of wide ranges of nuclei, both spherical and axially deformed, extending all the way out to nucleon drip lines.

Ground state properties of rare-earth nuclei in the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings

The relativistic mean-field effective interaction with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings DD-ME1 is tested in the calculation of deformed nuclei. Ground-state properties of six isotopic chains ($60\le Z \le 70$) in the region of rare-earth nuclei are calculated by using the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model with the DD-ME1 mean-field interaction, and with the Gogny D1S force for the pairing interaction. Results of fully self-consistent RHB calculations for the total binding energies, charge isotope shifts and quadrupole deformation parameters are compared with the available empirical data.
