Quasiparticle random phase approximation based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model II: Nuclear spin and isospin excitations

The proton-neutron relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation (PN-RQRPA) is formulated in the canonical single-nucleon basis of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model, for an effective Lagrangian characterized by density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings. The model includes both the T=1 and T=0 pairing channels. Pair configurations formed from the fully or partially occupied states of positive energy in the Fermi sea, and the empty negative-energy states from the Dirac sea, are included in PN-RQRPA configuration space. The model is applied to the analysis of charge-exchange modes: isobaric analog resonances and Gamow-Teller resonances.

Spin-Isospin Resonances and Neutron Skin of Nuclei

The Gamow-Teller resonances (GTR) and isobaric analog states (IAS) of a sequence of even-even Sn target nuclei are calculated by using the framework of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model plus proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The calculation reproduces the experimental data on ground-state properties, as well as the excitation energies of the isovector excitations. It is shown that the isotopic dependence of the energy spacings between the GTR and IAS provides direct information on the evolution of neutron skin-thickness along the Sn isotopic chain. A new method is suggested for determining the difference between the radii of the neutron and proton density distributions along an isotopic chain, based on measurement of the excitation energies of the GTR relative to the IAS.

Spin symmetry in the anti-nucleon spectrum

We discuss spin and pseudo-spin symmetry in the spectrum of single nucleons and single anti-nucleons in a nucleus. As an example we use relativistic mean field theory to investigate single anti-nucleon spectra. We find a very well developed spin symmetry in single anti-neutron and single anti-proton spectra. The dominant components of the wave functions of the spin doublet are almost identical. This spin symmetry in anti-particle spectra and the pseudo-spin symmetry in particle spectra have the same origin. However it turns out that the spin symmetry in anti-nucleon spectra is much better developed than the pseudo-spin symmetry in normal nuclear single particle spectra.

Quasiparticle random phase approximation based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model

The relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation (RQRPA) is formulated in the canonical single-nucleon basis of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model. For the interaction in the particle-hole channel effective Lagrangians with nonlinear meson self-interactions are used, and pairing correlations are described by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction. The RQRPA configuration space includes the Dirac sea of negative energy states. Both in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels, the same interactions are used in the RHB calculation of the ground state and in the matrix equations of the RQRPA. The RHB+RQRPA approach is tested in the example of multipole excitations of neutron rich oxygen isotopes. The RQRPA is applied in the analysis of the evolution of the low-lying isovector dipole strength in Sn isotopes and N=82 isotones.

A microscopic estimate of the nuclear matter compressibility and symmetry energy in relativistic mean-field models

The relativistic mean-field plus RPA calculations, based on effective Lagrangians with density-dependent meson-nucleon vertex functions, are employed in a microscopic analysis of the nuclear matter compressibility and symmetry energy. We compute the isoscalar monopole and the isovector dipole response of $^{208}$Pb, as well as the differences between the neutron and proton radii for $^{208}$Pb and several Sn isotopes. The comparison of the calculated excitation energies with the experimental data on the giant monopole resonance in $^{208}$Pb, restricts the nuclear matter compression modulus of structure models based on the relativistic mean-field approximation to $K_{\rm nm}\approx 250 - 270$ MeV. The isovector giant dipole resonance in $^{208}$Pb, and the available data on differences between neutron and proton radii, limit the range of the nuclear matter symmetry energy at saturation (volume asymmetry) to 32 MeV $\leq a_4 \leq$ 36 MeV.

Relativistic Random-Phase Approximation with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings

The matrix equations of the relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA) are derived for an effective Lagrangian characterized by density-dependent meson-nucleon vertex functions. The explicit density dependence of the meson-nucleon couplings introduces rearrangement terms in the residual two-body interaction, that are essential for a quantitative description of excited states. Illustrative calculations of the isoscalar monopole, isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole response of $^{208}$Pb, are performed in the fully self-consistent RRPA framework, based on effective interactions with a phenomenological density dependence adjusted to nuclear matter and ground-state properties of spherical nuclei. The comparison of the RRPA results on multipole giant resonances with experimental data constrains the parameters that characterize the isoscalar and isovector channel of the density-dependent effective interactions.

Pairing-correlations and particle-number projection methods

A systematic study of the pairing-correlations derived from various particle-number projection methods is performed in an exactly soluble cranked-deformed shell model Hamiltonian. It is shown that most of the approximate particle-number projection methods including the method of Lipkin-Nogami, which is used quite extensively in nuclear structure studies, breakdown in the weak pairing limit. The results obtained from the recently formulated number-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (PHFB) equations, on the other hand, are in complete agreement with the exact solutions of the model Hamiltonian. The pairing-energy calculated from PHFB method is shown to be finite in all the studied limits. More importantly, the numerical work involved in the solution of the PHFB equations appears to be comparable to the solution of the bare HFB equations.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings

The relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model is extended to include density dependent meson-nucleon couplings. The effective Lagrangian is characterized by a phenomenological density dependence for the $σ$, $ω$ and $ρ$ meson-nucleon vertex functions, adjusted to properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei. Pairing correlations are described by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction. The new density-dependent effective interaction DD-ME1 is tested in the analysis of the equations of state for symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter, and of ground-state properties of the Sn and Pb isotopic chains. Results of self-consistent RHB calculations are compared with experimental data, and with results previously obtained in the RHB model with non-linear self-interactions, as well as in the density dependent relativistic hadron field (DDRH) model. Parity-violating elastic electron scattering on Pb and Sn nuclei is calculated using a relativistic optical model with inclusion of Coulomb distortion effects, and the resulting asymmetry parameters are related to the neutron ground-state density distributions.

Shape Coexistence in the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov approach

The phenomenon of shape coexistence is studied in the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov framework. Standard relativistic mean-field effective interactions do not reproduce the ground state properties of neutron-deficient Pt-Hg-Pb isotopes. It is shown that, in order to consistently describe binding energies, radii and ground state deformations of these nuclei, effective interactions have to be constructed which take into account the sizes of spherical shell gaps.

Toroidal dipole resonances in the relativistic random phase approximation

The isoscalar toroidal dipole strength distributions in spherical nuclei are calculated in the framework of a fully consistent relativistic random phase approximation. It is suggested that the recently observed "low-lying component of the isoscalar dipole mode" might in fact correspond to the toroidal giant dipole resonance. Although predicted by several theoretical models, the existence of toroidal resonances has not yet been confirmed in experiment. The strong mixing between the toroidal resonance and the dipole compression mode might help to explain the large discrepancy between theory and experiment on the position of isoscalar giant dipole resonances.

Beyond the relativistic Hartree mean-field approximation: energy dependent effective mass

The standard relativistic mean-field model is extended by including dynamical effects that arise in the coupling of single-nucleon motion to collective surface vibrations. A phenomenological scheme, based on a linear ansatz for the energy dependence of the scalar and vector components of the nucleon self-energy for states close to the Fermi surface, allows a simultaneous description of binding energies, radii, deformations and single-nucleon spectra in a self-consistent relativistic framework. The model is applied to the spherical, doubly closed-shell nuclei 132Sn and 208Pb.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov description of deformed light nuclei

The Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model is applied in the analysis of ground-state properties of Be, B, C, N, F, Ne and Na isotopes. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Neutron separation energies, quadrupole deformations, nuclear matter radii, and differences in radii of proton and neutron distributions are compared with recent experimental data.

Collective multipole excitations in a microscopic relativistic approach

A relativistic mean field description of collective excitations of atomic nuclei is studied in the framework of a fully self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation (RRPA). In particular, results of RRPA calculations of multipole giant resonances and of low-lying collective states in spherical nuclei are analyzed. By using effective Lagrangians which, in the mean-field approximation, provide an accurate description of ground-state properties, an excellent agreement with experimental data is also found for the excitation energies of low-lying collective states and of giant resonances. Two points are essential for the successful application of the RRPA in the description of dynamical properties of finite nuclei: (i) the use of effective Lagrangians with non-linear terms in the meson sector, and (ii) the fully consistent treatment of the Dirac sea of negative energy states.

The time-dependent relativistic mean-field theory and the random phase approximation

The Relativistic Random Phase Approximation (RRPA) is derived from the Time-dependent Relativistic Mean Field (TD RMF) theory in the limit of small amplitude oscillations. In the no-sea approximation of the RMF theory, the RRPA configuration space includes not only the usual particle-hole states, but also a-h configurations, i.e. pairs formed from occupied states in the Fermi sea and empty negative-energy states in the Dirac sea. The contribution of the negative energy states to the RRPA matrices is examined in a schematic model, and the large effect of Dirac sea states on isoscalar strength distributions is illustrated for the giant monopole resonance in 116Sn. It is shown that, because the matrix elements of the time-like component of the vector meson fields which couple the a-h configurations with the ph-configurations are strongly reduced with respect to the corresponding matrix elements of the isoscalar scalar meson field, the inclusion of states with unperturbed energies more than 1.2 GeV below the Fermi energy has a pronounced effect on giant resonances with excitation energies in the MeV region. The influence of nuclear magnetism, i.e. the effect of the spatial components of the vector fields is examined, and the difference between the non-relativistic and relativistic RPA predictions for the nuclear matter compression modulus is explained.

Collectivity of the low-lying dipole strength in relativistic random phase approximation

The relativistic random phase approximation is applied in the analysis of the evolution of the isovector dipole response in nuclei with a large neutron excess. The self-consistent framework of relativistic mean-field theory, which has been very successfully applied in the description of ground-state properties of nuclei far from the valley of $β$-stability, is extended to study the possible onset of low-energy collective isovector dipole modes in nuclei with extreme isospin values.

Moments of Inertia of Nuclei in the Rare Earth Region: A Relativistic versus Non-Relativistic Investigation

A parameter free investigation of the moments of inertia of ground state rotational bands in well deformed rare-earth nuclei is carried out using Cranked Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) and non-relativistic Cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (CHFB) theories. In CRHB theory, the relativistic fields are determined by the non-linear Lagrangian with the NL1 force and the pairing interaction by the central part of finite range Gogny D1S force. In CHFB theory, the properties in particle-hole and particle-particle channels are defined solely by Gogny D1S forces. Using an approximate particle number projection before variation by means of the Lipkin Nogami method improves the agreement with the experimental data, especially in CRHB theory. The effect of the particle number projection on the moments of inertia and pairing energies is larger in relativistic than in non-relativistic theory.

Cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory: Superdeformation in the $A\sim 190$ mass region

A systematic investigation of the yrast superdeformed (SD) rotational bands in even-even nuclei of the $A\sim 190$ mass region has been performed within the framework of the cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory. The particle-hole channel of this theory is treated fully relativistically, while a finite range two-body force of Gogny type is used in the particle-particle (pairing) channel. Using the well established parameter sets NL1 for the Lagrangian and D1S for the Gogny force, very good description of experimental data is obtained with no adjustable parameters.

Pygmy dipole resonances in relativistic random phase approximation

The isovector dipole response in $^{208}$Pb is described in the framework of a fully self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation. The NL3 parameter set for the effective mean-field Lagrangian with nonlinear meson self-interaction terms, used in the present calculations, reproduces ground state properties as well as the excitation energies of giant resonances in nuclei. In addition to the isovector dipole resonance in $^{208}$Pb, the present analysis predicts the occurrence of low-lying E1 peaks in the energy region between 7 and 11 MeV. In particular, a collective state has been identified whose dynamics correspond to that of a dipole pygmy resonance: the vibration of the excess neutrons against the inert core composed of equal number of protons and neutrons.
