The CLAS Electromagnetic Calorimeter at Large Angles

The study of the response of the two modules of the large-angle electromagnetic shower calorimeter (LAC) of the CLAS detector to charged and neutral particles is reported. The results agree very well with the Monte Carlo simulation. The procedures adopted for the energy and timing calibration are also discussed, proving that the module geometry allows for simple self-calibrating energy and timing algorithms.

Forward-backward angle asymmetry and polarization observables in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration

Deuteron two-body photodisintegration is analysed within the framework of the Quark-Gluon Strings Model. It is found that the forward-backward angle asymmetry predicted by the model is confirmed by the recent data at different photon energies from Jlab. New calculations for polarization observables, the cross section asymmetry $Σ$ and the polarization transfer $C_{z^{\prime}}$, for photon energies $(1.2\div6)$ GeV are presented and compared with the data available up to 2 GeV.

X-ray emission from expanding cocoons

X-ray observations of extragalactic radiosources show strong evidences of interaction between the radio emitting plasma and the X-ray emitting ambient gas. In this paper we perform a detailed study of this interaction by numerical simulations. We study the propagation of an axisymmetric supersonic jet in an isothermal King atmosphere and we analyze the evolution of the resulting X-ray properties and their dependence on the jet physical parameters. We show the existence of two distinct and observationally different regimes of interaction, with strong and weak shocks. In the first case shells of enhanced X-ray emission are to be expected, while in the second case we expect deficit of X-ray emission coincident with the cocoon. By a comparison between analytical models and the results of our numerical simulations, we discuss the dependence of the transition between these two regimes on the jet parameters and we find that the mean controlling quantity results to be the jet kinetic power. We then discuss how the observed jets can be used to constrain the jet properties.

Portfolio Selection with Probabilistic Utility, Bayesian Statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo

We propose a novel portfolio selection approach that manages to ease some of the problems that characterise standard expected utility maximisation. The optimal portfolio is no longer defined as the extremum of a suitably chosen utility function: the latter, instead, is reinterpreted as the logarithm of a probability distribution for optimal portfolios and the selected portfolio is defined as the expected value with respect to this distribution. A further theoretical aspect is the adoption of a Bayesian inference framework. We find that this approach has several attractive features, when comparing it to the standard maximisation of expected utility. We remove the over-pronounced sensitivity on external parameters that plague optimisation procedures and obtain a natural and self consistent way to account for uncertainty in knowledge and for personal views. We test the proposed method against traditional expected utility maximisation, using artificial data to simulate finite-sample behaviour, and find superior performance of our procedure. All numerical integrals are carried out by using Markov Chain Monte Carlo, where the chains are generated by an adapted version of Hybrid Monte Carlo. We present numerical results for a portfolio of eight assets using historical time series running from January 1988 to January 2002.

Polarization observables in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration within the Quark-Gluon Strings Model

Deuteron two-body photodisintegration is analysed within the framework of the Quark-Gluon Strings Model. The model describes fairly well the recent experimental data from TJNAF in the few GeV region. Angular distributions at different $γ$-energies are presented and the effect of a forward-backward asymmetry is discussed. New results from the QGSM for polarization observables from 1.5 -- 6 GeV are presented and compared with the available data.

On the origin of X-shaped radio-sources: new insights from the properties of their host galaxies

A significant fraction of extended radio sources presents a peculiar X-shaped radio morphology: in addition to the classical double lobed structure, radio emission is also observed along a second axis of symmetry in the form of diffuse wings or tails. We re-examine the origin of these extensions relating the radio morphology to the properties of their host galaxies. The orientation of the wings shows a striking connection with the structure of the host galaxy as they are preferentially aligned with its minor axis. Furthermore, wings are only observed in galaxies of high projected ellipticity. Hydrodynamical simulations of the radio-source evolution show that X-shaped radio-sources naturally form in this geometrical situation: as a jet propagates in a non-spherical gas distribution, the cocoon surrounding the radio-jets expands laterally at a high rate producing wings of radio emission, in a way that is reminiscent of the twin-exhaust model for radio-sources.

Critical exponents and equation of state of the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class

We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class. We find gamma=1.3960(9), nu=0.7112(5), eta=0.0375(5), alpha=-0.1336(15), beta=0.3689(3), and delta=4.783(3). We consider an improved lattice phi^4 Hamiltonian with suppressed leading scaling corrections. Our results are obtained by combining Monte Carlo simulations based on finite-size scaling methods and high-temperature expansions. The critical exponents are computed from high-temperature expansions specialized to the phi^4 improved model. By the same technique we determine the coefficients of the small-magnetization expansion of the equation of state. This expansion is extended analytically by means of approximate parametric representations, obtaining the equation of state in the whole critical region. We also determine a number of universal amplitude ratios.

Spectrum of k-string tensions in SU(N) gauge theories

We compute, for the four-dimensional SU(4) and SU(6) gauge theories formulated on a lattice, the string tensions sigma_k related to sources with Z_N charge k, using Monte Carlo simulations. Our results are compatible with sigma_k \propto sin (k pi/N), and show sizeable deviations from Casimir scaling.

Crossover phenomena in spin models with medium-range interactions and self-avoiding walks with medium-range jumps

We study crossover phenomena in a model of self-avoiding walks with medium-range jumps, that corresponds to the limit $N\to 0$ of an $N$-vector spin system with medium-range interactions. In particular, we consider the critical crossover limit that interpolates between the Gaussian and the Wilson-Fisher fixed point. The corresponding crossover functions are computed using field-theoretical methods and an appropriate mean-field expansion. The critical crossover limit is accurately studied by numerical Monte Carlo simulations, which are much more efficient for walk models than for spin systems. Monte Carlo data are compared with the field-theoretical predictions concerning the critical crossover functions, finding a good agreement. We also verify the predictions for the scaling behavior of the leading nonuniversal corrections. We determine phenomenological parametrizations that are exact in the critical crossover limit, have the correct scaling behavior for the leading correction, and describe the nonuniversal lscrossover behavior of our data for any finite range.

Deuteron photodisintegration within the Quark-Gluon Strings Model and QCD motivated nonlinear Regge trajectories

We investigate deuteron two-body photodisintegration within the framework of the Quark-Gluon Strings Model with nonlinear baryon Regge trajectories. Special attention is paid to the use of QCD motivated Regge trajectories of the logarithmic and square-root form which have been suggested recently by Brisudová, Burakovsky and Goldman. We find that the recent experimental data from TJNAF in the few GeV region can reasonably be described by the model. Angular distributions at different $γ$-energies are presented and the effect of a forward-backward asymmetry is discussed. Predictions for the energy dependence of $dσ/dt$ at higher energies and different $Θ_{cm}$ are presented, too.

Critical exponents and equation of state of three-dimensional spin models

Three-dimensional spin models of the Ising and XY universality classes are studied by a combination of high-temperature expansions and Monte Carlo simulations. Critical exponents are determined to very high precision. Scaling amplitude ratios are computed via the critical equation of state. Our results are compared with other theoretical computations and with experiments, with special emphasis on the lambda transition of 4He.

On the matter entrainment by stellar jets and the acceleration of molecular outflows

We study, by numerical simulations, the entrainment process in a supersonic, radiative jet flow, during the evolution of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, in the context of the the acceleration problem of molecular bipolar outflows, observed in Giant Molecular Clouds. Our results show that a large fraction of the initial jet momentum can be transferred to the ambient medium by this process. We therefore analyze in detail the instability evolution and compare some of the main observational properties of molecular outflows with those of the entrained material that we observe in our simulations. In particular, we find a good agreement for the mass vs. velocity distribution and for the outflow collimation structure, especially when a light jet is moving into a denser ambient medium. This is probably the case for (obscured) optical jets driving powerful molecular outflows in the denser environment of the inner regions of molecular clouds.

Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in three dimensional radiative jets

The analysis of the stability properties of astrophysical jets against Kelvin-Helmholtz (or shear-layer) instabilities plays a basic role in the understanding the origin and physical characteristics of these objects. Numerical simulations by Bodo et al. (1998) have shown that the three-dimensional non-linear evolution of KH instabilities in supersonic jets is substantially faster than in the two-dimensional case, leading to a cascade of modes towards smaller scales and a very effective mixing and momentum transfer to the ambient medium. On the other hand, Rossi et al. (1997) and Micono et al. (1998) found, in two dimensions, that radiative losses tend to reduce and delay mixing effects and momentum transfer to the ambient medium. In this paper, as a logical next step, we investigate the effects of radiative losses on the stability of 3D supersonic jets, assuming that the internal jet density is initially lower, equal and higher than the ambient medium, respectively. We find that light and equal-density radiative jets evolve in a qualitatively similar fashion with respect to the corresponding adiabatic ones. Conversely, we note substantial differences in the evolution of heavy jets: they remain more collimated and do not spread out, while the momentum gained by the ambient medium stays within ~ 5 jet radii.

Understanding NLR in Seyfert Galaxies: numerical simulation of jet-cloud interaction

Recent HST observations suggest that the NLR in Seyfert Galaxies can be the result of interaction between jet and external inhomogeneous medium; following this suggestion we perform numerical simulations considering the impact of a radiative jet on a dense cloud. We approach the problem adopting a hydrodynamical code, that consents us to study in detail the jet hydrodynamics, while we choose a more simplified treatment of radiative processes, in order to give a qualitatively good interpretation of the emission processes. Our three main purposes are: i) to reproduce in our simulations the physical conditions observed in the NLR of Seyfert Galaxies, ii) to obtain physical constraints of the jet parameters and iii) to study the jet capability to photoionize the surrounding medium.

Acoustic Waves in a Stratified Atmosphere: II. Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamics

We investigate analytically the propagation of linear waves in a three-dimensional, nonmagnetic, isothermal atmosphere stratified in plane-parallel layers. The motivation is to study oscillations in the non-magnetic chromosphere and to assess the limitations of one-dimensional simulations of the Kv bright point phenomenon. We consider an impulsively excited acoustic disturbance, emanating from a point source, and propagating outward as a spherical acoustic wave accompanied by an internal gravity wave. The waves amplify exponentially in the upward direction. A significant wave amplitude is therefore found only in a relatively narrow cone about the vertical. The amplitude of the wave decreases with time. Because of the lateral spread, the wave amplitude decays faster in 2D and 3D simulations than in 1D. The initial pulse, which travels at the sound speed, carries most of the energy injected into the medium. Subsequent wave crests leave the source region at ever-increasing phase speed, but slow to the sound speed as they approach the head of the wave. Important conclusions from the 3D solution that were not anticipated from the plane-wave solution are: 1. The bulk of the energy is emitted in the upward (and downward) direction; much less goes into the horizontal direction. 2. The wave profile narrows from the initial pulse through the amplitude maxima in the wake of the pulse. As a consequence of both points, the shock-heated regions in the wake of the initial pulse would weaken in strength and shrink in size.

Mean-field expansion for spin models with medium-range interactions

We study the critical crossover between the Gaussian and the Wilson-Fisher fixed point for general O(N)-invariant spin models with medium-range interactions. We perform a systematic expansion around the mean-field solution, obtaining the universal crossover curves and their leading corrections. In particular we show that, in three dimensions, the leading correction scales as $R^{-3}, R$ being the range of the interactions. We compare our results with the existing numerical ones obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and present a critical discussion of other approaches.

Photoabsorption on nuclei in the shadowing threshold region

The energy and nuclear mass dependences of the total hadronic cross section in the energy range 0.5-2.6 GeV have been measured at Bonn using the SAPHIR tagged photon beam. The measurement, performed on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb, provides the first photoabsorption data in the region 1.2-1.7 GeV. The results show a significant reduction of the photoabsorption strength on the bound nucleon compared to the free nucleon case in the whole energy region. Above 1.2 GeV this reduction decreases with the nuclear density and can be interpreted as a signature of a low energy onset of the shadowing effect.
