Crossover scaling from classical to nonclassical critical behavior

We study the crossover between classical and nonclassical critical behaviors. The critical crossover limit is driven by the Ginzburg number G. The corresponding scaling functions are universal with respect to any possible microscopic mechanism which can vary G, such as changing the range or the strength of the interactions. The critical crossover describes the unique flow from the unstable Gaussian to the stable nonclassical fixed point. The scaling functions are related to the continuum renormalization-group functions. We show these features explicitly in the large-N limit of the O(N) phi^4 model. We also show that the effective susceptibility exponent is nonmonotonic in the low-temperature phase of the three-dimensional Ising model.

Determination of the forward Compton scattering amplitudes for C and Pb

The forward Compton scattering amplitude for carbon and lead have been calculated from total photoabsorption cross section data by using dispersion relations. The results show a large difference between the scattering amplitudes for nuclei and the free nucleon, above the $Δ$ region. The forward Compton scattering cross sections have been calculated and compared with the available data. The Weise sum rule is discussed together with the prediction of a recent theoretical model.

The two-point correlation function of three-dimensional O(N) models: critical limit and anisotropy

In three-dimensional O(N) models, we investigate the low-momentum behavior of the two-point Green's function G(x) in the critical region of the symmetric phase. We consider physical systems whose criticality is characterized by a rotational-invariant fixed point. Several approaches are exploited, such as strong-coupling expansion of lattice non-linear O(N) sigma models, 1/N-expansion, field-theoretical methods within the phi^4 continuum formulation. In non-rotational invariant physical systems with O(N)-invariant interactions, the vanishing of space-anisotropy approaching the rotational-invariant fixed point is described by a critical exponent rho, which is universal and is related to the leading irrelevant operator breaking rotational invariance. At N=\infty one finds rho=2. We show that, for all values of $N\geq 0$, $ρ\simeq 2$. Non-Gaussian corrections to the universal low-momentum behavior of G(x) are evaluated, and found to be very small.

On the evaluation of universal non-perturbative constants in O(N) sigma models

We investigate the relation between on-shell and zero-momentum non-perturbative quantities entering the parametrization of the two-point Green's function of two-dimensional non-linear O(N) sigma models. We present accurate estimates of ratios of mass-scales and renormalization constants, obtained by an analysis of the strong-coupling expansion of the two-point Green's function. These ratios allow to connect exact known on-shell results with typical zero-momentum lattice evaluations. Our results are supported by the 1/N-expansion.

Quasi-elastic and inelastic inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen jet target

The results of an experiment on inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen jet target, performed in a wide range of energy and momentum transfer covering both quasi-elastic and $Δ$(1232) resonance regions, are reported. In the former region the theoretical predictions, obtained including effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations in both initial and final states, give a good description of the experimental data. In the inelastic region a broadening as well as a damping of the resonant part of the cross section with respect to the free nucleon case is observed. The need of more detailed calculations including nuclear structure effects on the electroproduction cross section of nucleon resonances is highlighted.

Four-point renormalized coupling constant in O(N) models

The renormalized zero-momentum four-point coupling $g_r$ of $O(N)$-invariant scalar field theories in $d$ dimensions is studied by applying the $1/N$ expansion and strong coupling analysis. The $O(1/N)$ correction to the $β$-function and to the fixed point value $g_r^*$ are explictly computed. Strong coupling series for lattice non-linear $σ$ models are analyzed near criticality in $d=2$ and $d=3$ for several values of $N$ and the corresponding values of $g_r^*$ are extracted. Large-$N$ and strong coupling results are compared with each other, finding a good general agreement. For small $N$ the strong coupling analysis in 2-d gives the best determination of $g^*_r$ to date (or comparable for $N=2,3$ with the available Monte Carlo estimates), and in 3-d it is consistent with available $ϕ^4$ field theory results.

Critical Behavior of Simplicial Chiral Models

The large-N saddle-point equations for the principal chiral models defined on a d-1 dimensional simplex are derived from the external field problem for unitary integrals. The saddle point equation are studied analytically and numerically in many relevant instances, including d=4 and $d\rightarrow\infty$, with special attention to the critical domain, which is found to correspond to $β_c=1/d$ for all d. Related models (chiral chains) are discussed and large-N solutions are analyzed.

Strong coupling analysis of the large-N 2-d lattice chiral models

Two dimensional large-N chiral models on the square and honeycomb lattices are investigated by a strong coupling analysis. Strong coupling expansion turns out to be predictive for the evaluation of continuum physical quantities, to the point of showing asymptotic scaling. Indeed in the strong coupling region a quite large range of beta values exists where the fundamental mass agrees, within about 5% on the square lattice and about 10% on the honeycomb lattice, with the continuum predictions in the %%energy scheme.

Large-N phase transition in lattice 2-d principal chiral models

We investigate the large-N critical behavior of 2-d lattice chiral models by Monte Carlo simulations of U(N) and SU(N) groups at large N. Numerical results confirm strong coupling analyses, i.e. the existence of a large-N second order phase transition at a finite $β_c$.

Strong coupling expansion of chiral models

A general precedure is outlined for an algorithmic implementation of the strong coupling expansion of lattice chiral models on arbitrary lattices. A symbolic character expansion in terms of connected values of group integrals on skeleton diagrams may be obtained by a fully computerized approach.

Master Wilson loop operators in large-N lattice QCD$_2$

An explicit solution is found for the most general independent correlation functions in lattice QCD$_2$ with Wilson action. The large-$N$ limit of these correlations may be used to reconstruct the eigenvalue distributions of Wilson loop operators for arbitrary loops. Properties of these spectral densities are discussed in the region $β<β_c={1\over 2}$.

Measure of Autocorrelation Times of Local Hybrid Monte Carlo Algorithm for Lattice QCD

We report on a study of the autocorrelation times of the local version of the Hybrid Monte Carlo (LHMC) algorithm for pure gauge $SU(3)$. We compare LHMC to standard multi-hit Metropolis and to the global version of the same HMC. For every algorithm we measure the autocorrelation time for a variety of observables and the string tension as a function of beta. The measurements performed on 8^4 and 16^4 lattices indicate that the autocorrelation time of LHMC is significantly shorter than for the other two algorithms.

Gribov Copies in Lattice QCD

We have performed an exhaustive search for Gribov copies on the lattice and their possible dependence from finite temperature effects. We show that, for each value of lattice size, Gribov copies are dense in configuration space at low temperature but their density tend to lower when the temperature increases. We have investigated lattice sizes running from $16^3\times 8$ to $16^4$.

Simple Hadronic Matrix Elements with Wilson Valence Quarks and Dynamical Staggered Fermions at ${\bf 6/g^2=5.6}$

We have measured some simple matrix elements for pseudoscalar and vector mesons made of Wilson valence quarks and staggered sea quarks at $β=5.6$ at sea quark masses $am_q=0.01$ and 0.025. Our measurements include the decay constants of pseudoscalars (including $f_D$), the wave function at the origin (or decay constant) of vector mesons, and the calculation of quark masses from current algebra. The effects of sea quarks on the simulations are small. We make comparisons to quenched simulations at similar values of the lattice spacing ($1/a \simeq 2$ GeV).

Topological susceptibility and string tension in the lattice CP(N) models

In the lattice CP(N) models we studied the problems related to the measure of the topological susceptibility and the string tension . We perfomed numerical simulations at N=4 and N=10. In order to test the universality, we adopted two different lattice formulations. Scaling and universality tests led to the conclusion that at N=10 the geometrical approach gives a good definition of lattice topological susceptibility. On the other hand, N=4 proved not to be large enough to suppress the unphysical configurations, called dislocations, contributing to the topological susceptibility. We obtained other determinations of the topological susceptibility by the field theoretical method, wich relies on a local definition of the lattice topological charge density, and the cooling method. They gave quite consistent results, showing scaling and universality. The large-N expansion predicts an exponential area law behavior for sufficiently large Wilson loops, which implies confinement, due to the dynamical matter fields and absence of the screening phenomenon. We determined the string tension, without finding evidence of screening effects.

Hadron Spectrum in QCD with Valence Wilson Fermions and Dynamical Staggered Fermions at $6/g^2=5.6

We present an analysis of hadronic spectroscopy for Wilson valence quarks with dynamical staggered fermions at lattice coupling $6/g^2 = β=5.6$ at sea quark mass $am_q=0.01$ and 0.025, and of Wilson valence quarks in quenched approximation at $β=5.85$ and 5.95, both on $16^3 \times 32$ lattices. We make comparisons with our previous results with dynamical staggered fermions at the same parameter values but on $16^4$ lattices doubled in the temporal direction.
