Quantum Spin Tomography in Ferromagnet-Normal Conductors

We present a theory for a complete reconstruction of non-local spin correlations in ferromagnet-normal conductors. This quantum spin tomography is based on cross correlation measurements of electric currents into ferromagnetic terminals with controllable magnetization directions. For normal injectors, non-local spin correlations are universal and strong. The correlations are suppressed by spin-flip scattering and, for ferromagnetic injectors, by increasing injector polarization.

Entanglement at finite temperatures in the electronic two-particle interferometer

In this work we discuss a theory for entanglement generation, characterization and detection in fermionic two-particle interferometers at finite temperature. The motivation for our work is provided by the recent experiment by the Heiblum group, Neder et al, Nature 448, 333 (2007), realizing the two particle interferometer proposed by Samuelsson, Sukhorukov, and Buttiker, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 026805 (2004). The experiment displayed a clear two-particle Aharonov-Bohm effect, however with an amplitude suppressed due to finite temperature and dephasing. This raised qualitative as well quantitative questions about entanglement production and detection in mesoscopic conductors at finite temperature. As a response to these questions, in our recent work, Samuelsson, Neder, and Buttiker, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 106804 (2009) we presented a general theory for finite temperature entanglement in mesoscopic conductors. Applied to the two-particle interferometer we showed that the emitted two-particle state in the experiment was clearly entangled. Moreover, we demonstrated that the entanglement of the reduced two-particle state, reconstructed from measurements of average currents and current cross correlations, constitutes a lower bound to the entanglement of the emitted state. The present work provides an extended and more detailed discussion of these findings.

Reduced and projected two-particle entanglement at finite temperatures

We present a theory for two-particle entanglement production and detection in mesoscopic conductors at finite temperature. In contrast to the zero temperature limit, the entanglement of the density matrix projected out of the emitted many-body state is different from the entanglement of the reduced density matrix, detectable by current correlation measurements. We show that under very general conditions the reduced entanglement constitutes a lower bound for the projected entanglement. Applying the theory to the recent experiment [Neder et al, Nature 448 333 (2007)] on a fermionic Hanbury Brown Twiss two-particle interferometer we find that despite an appreciable entanglement production in the experiment, the detectable entanglement is close to zero.

Quantized dynamics of a coherent capacitor

A quantum coherent capacitor subject to large amplitude pulse cycles can be made to emit or reabsorb an electron in each half cycle. Quantized currents with pulse cycles in the GHz range have been demonstrated experimentally. We develop a non-linear dynamical scattering theory for arbitrary pulses to describe the properties of this very fast single electron source. Using our theory we analyze the accuracy of the current quantization and investigate the noise of such a source. Our results are important for future scientific and possible metrological applications of this source.

Full Counting Statistics of Multiple Andreev Reflections in incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions

We present a theory for the full distribution of current fluctuations in incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions, subjected to a voltage bias. This theory of full counting statistics of incoherent multiple Andreev reflections is valid for arbitrary applied voltage. We present a detailed discussion of the properties of the first four cumulants as well as the low and high voltage regimes of the full counting statistics. The work is an extension of the results of Pilgram and the author, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 086806 (2005).

Quantum pump driven fermionic Mach-Zehnder interferometer

We have investigated the characteristics of the currents in a pump-driven fermionic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The system is implemented in a conductor in the quantum Hall regime, with the two interferometer arms enclosing an Aharonov-Bohm flux $Φ$. Two quantum point contacts with transparency modulated periodically in time drive the current and act as beam-splitters. The current has a flux dependent part $I^{(Φ)}$ as well as a flux independent part $I^{(0)}$. Both current parts show oscillations as a function of frequency on the two scales determined by the lengths of the interferometer arms. In the non-adiabatic, high frequency regime $I^{(Φ)}$ oscillates with a constant amplitude while the amplitude of the oscillations of $I^{(0)}$ increases linearly with frequency. The flux independent part $I^{(0)}$ is insensitive to temperature while the flux dependent part $I^{(Φ)}$ is exponentially suppressed with increasing temperature. We also find that for low amplitude, adiabatic pumping rectification effects are absent for semitransparent beam-splitters. Inelastic dephasing is introduced by coupling one of the interferometer arms to a voltage probe. For a long charge relaxation time of the voltage probe, giving a constant probe potential, $I^{(Φ)}$ and the part of $I^{(0)}$ flowing in the arm connected to the probe are suppressed with increased coupling to the probe. For a short relaxation time, with the potential of the probe adjusting instantaneously to give zero time dependent current at the probe, only $I^{(Φ)}$ is suppressed by the coupling to the probe.

Full counting statistics for voltage and dephasing probes

We present a stochastic path integral method to calculate the full counting statistics of conductors with energy conserving dephasing probes and dissipative voltage probes. The approach is explained for the experimentally important case of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, but is easily generalized to more complicated setups. For all geometries where dephasing may be modeled by a single one-channel dephasing probe we prove that our method yields the same full counting statistics as phase averaging of the cumulant generating function.

Shot noise of photon-excited electron-hole pairs in open quantum dots

We investigate shot noise of photon-excited electron-hole pairs in open multi-terminal, multi-channel chaotic dots. Coulomb interactions in the dot are treated self-consistently giving a gauge-invariant expression for the finite frequency correlations. The Coulomb interactions decrease the noise, the strong interaction limit coincides with the non-interacting adiabatic limit. Inelastic scattering and dephasing in the dot are described by voltage and dephasing probe models respectively. We find that dephasing leaves the noise invariant, but inelastic scattering decreases correlations eventually down to zero.

Counting statistics and decoherence in coupled quantum dots

We theoretically consider charge transport through two quantum dots coupled in series. The corresponding full counting statistics for noninteracting electrons is investigated in the limits of sequential and coherent tunneling by means of a master equation approach and a density matrix formalism, respectively. We clearly demonstrate the effect of quantum coherence on the zero-frequency cumulants of the transport process, focusing on noise and skewness. Moreover, we establish the continuous transition from the coherent to the incoherent tunneling limit in all cumulants of the transport process and compare this with decoherence described by a dephasing voltage probe model.

Quantum state tomography with quantum shotnoise

We propose a scheme for a complete reconstruction of one- and two-particle orbital quantum states in mesoscopic conductors. The conductor in the transport state continuously emits orbital quantum states. The orbital states are manipulated by electronic beamsplitters and detected by measurements of average currents and zero frequency current shotnoise correlators. We show how, by a suitable complete set of measurements, the elements of the density matrices of the one- and two-particle states can be directly expressed in terms of the currents and current correlators.

Visibility of current and shot noise in electrical Mach-Zehnder and Hanbury Brown Twiss interferometers

We investigate the visibility of the current and shot-noise correlations of electrical analogs of the optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the Hanbury Brown Twiss interferometer. The electrical analogs are discussed in conductors subject to high magnetic fields where electron motion is along edge states. The transport quantities are modulated with the help of an Aharonov-Bohm flux. We discuss the conductance (current) visibility and shot noise visibility as a function of temperature and applied voltage. Dephasing is introduced with the help of fictitious voltage probes. Comparison of these two interferometers is of interest since the Mach-Zehnder interferometer is an amplitude (single-particle) interferometer whereas the Hanbury Brown Twiss interferometer is an intensity (two-particle) interferometer. A direct comparison is only possible for the shot noise of the two interferometers. We find that the visibility of shot noise correlations of the Hanbury Brown Twiss interferometer as function of temperature, voltage or dephasing, is qualitatively similar to the visibility of the first harmonic of the shot noise correlation of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In contrast, the second harmonic of the shot noise visibility of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer decreases much more rapidly with increasing temperature, voltage or dephasing rate.

Quasiparticle entanglement: redefinition of the vacuum and reduced density matrix approach

A scattering approach to entanglement in mesoscopic conductors with independent fermionic quasiparticles is discussed. We focus on conductors in the tunneling limit, where a redefinition of the quasiparticle vacuum transforms the wavefunction from a manybody product state of noninteracting particles to a state describing entangled two-particle excitations out of the new vacuum. The approach is illustrated with two examples (i) a normal-superconducting system, where the transformation is made between Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticles and Cooper pairs, and (ii) a normal system, where the transformation is made between electron quasiparticles and electron-hole pairs. This is compared to a scheme where an effective two-particle state is derived from the manybody scattering state by a reduced density matrix approach.

Dynamic generation of orbital quasiparticle entanglement in mesoscopic conductors

We propose a scheme for dynamically creating orbitally entangled electron-hole pairs through a time-dependent variation of the electrical potential in a mesoscopic conductor. The time-dependent potential generates a superposition of electron-hole pairs in two different orbital regions of the conductor, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the quantum Hall regime. The orbital entanglement is detected via violation of a Bell inequality, formulated in terms of zero-frequency current noise. Adiabatic cycling of the potential, both in the weak and strong amplitude limit, is considered.

Noise and Full Counting Statistics of Incoherent Multiple Andreev Reflection

We present a general theory for the full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflections in incoherent superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts. The theory, based on a stochastic path integral approach, is applied to a superconductor-double barrier system. It is found that all cumulants of the current show a pronounced subharmonic gap structure at voltages $V=2Δ/en$. For low voltages $V\llΔ/e$, the counting statistics results from diffusion of multiple charges in energy space, giving the $p$th cumulant $ \propto V^{2-p}$, diverging for $p\geq 3$. We show that this low-voltage result holds for a large class of incoherent superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts.

Entangled Hanbury Brown Twiss effects with edge states

Electronic Hanbury Brown Twiss correlations are discussed for geometries in which transport is along adiabatically guided edge channels. We briefly discuss partition noise experiments and discuss the effect of inelastic scattering and dephasing on current correlations. We then consider a two-source Hanbury Brown Twiss experiment which demonstrates strikingly that even in geometries without an Aharonov-Bohm effect in the conductance matrix (second-order interference), correlation functions can (due to fourth-order interference) be sensitive to a flux. Interestingly we find that this fourth-order interference effect is closely related to orbital entanglement. The entanglement can be detected via violation of a Bell Inequality in this geometry even so particles emanate from uncorrelated sources.

Electrical current noise of a beam splitter as a test of spin-entanglement

We investigate the spin entanglement in the superconductor-quantum dot system proposed by Recher, Sukhorukov and Loss, coupling it to an electronic beam-splitter. The superconductor-quantum dot entangler and the beam-splitter are treated within a unified framework and the entanglement is detected via current correlations. The state emitted by the entangler is found to be a linear superposition of non-local spin-singlets at different energies, a spin-entangled two-particle wavepacket. Colliding the two electrons in the beam-splitter, the singlet spin-state gives rise to a bunching behavior, detectable via the current correlators. The amount of bunching depends on the relative positions of the single particle levels in the quantum dots and the scattering amplitudes of the beam-splitter. The singlet spin entanglement, insensitive to orbital dephasing but suppressed by spin dephasing, is conveniently quantified via the Fano factors. It is found that the entanglement-dependent contribution to the Fano factor is of the same magnitude as the non-entangled, making an experimental detection feasible. A detailed comparison between the current correlations of the non-local spin-singlet state and other states, possibly emitted by the entangler, is performed. This provides conditions for an unambiguous identification of the non-local singlet spin entanglement.

Andreev reflection eigenvalue density in mesoscopic conductors

The energy-dependent Andreev reflection eigenvalues determine the transport properties of normal-superconducting systems. We evaluate the eigenvalue density to get an insight into formation of resonant electron-hole transport channels. The circuit-theory-like method developed can be applied to any generic mesoscopic conductor or combinations thereof. We present the results for experimentally relevant cases of a diffusive wire and a double tunnel junction.

Coherent current transport in wide ballistic Josephson junctions

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of coherent current transport in wide ballistic superconductor-two dimensional electron gas-superconductor junctions. It is found experimentally that upon increasing the junction length, the subharmonic gap structure in the current-voltage characteristics is shifted to lower voltages, and the excess current at voltages much larger than the superconducting gap decreases. Applying a theory of coherent multiple Andreev reflection, we show that these observations can be explained in terms of transport through Andreev resonances.
