Orbital entanglement and violation of Bell inequalities in the presence of dephasing

We discuss orbital entanglement in mesoscopic conductors, focusing on the effect of dephasing. The entanglement is detected via violation of a Bell Inequality formulated in terms of zero-frequency current correlations. Following closely the recent work by Samuelsson, Sukhorukov and Buttiker, we investigate how the dephasing affects the possibility to violate the Bell Inequality and how system parameters can be adjusted for optimal violation.

Two-particle Aharonov-Bohm effect and Entanglement in the electronic Hanbury Brown Twiss setup

We analyze a Hanbury Brown Twiss geometry in which particles are injected from two independent sources into a mesoscopic electrical conductor. The set-up has the property that all partial waves end in different reservoirs without generating any single particle interference. There is no single particle Aharonov-Bohm effect. However, exchange effects lead to two-particle Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in current correlations. We demonstrate that the two-particle Aharonov-Bohm effect is connected to orbital entanglement which can be used for violation of a Bell Inequality.

Full counting statistics of incoherent Andreev transport

We study the full counting statistics of heterostructures consisting of normal metal parts connected to a superconducting terminal. Assuming that coherent superconducting correlations are suppressed in the normal metals we show, using Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions, that the system can be mapped onto a purely normal system with twice the number of elements. For a superconducting beam splitter with several normal terminals we obtain general results for the counting statistics.

Orbital entanglement and violation of Bell inequalities in mesoscopic conductors

We propose a spin-independent scheme to generate and detect two-particle entanglement in a mesoscopic normal-superconductor system. A superconductor, weakly coupled to the normal conductor, generates an orbitally entangled state by injecting pairs of electrons into different leads of the normal conductor. The entanglement is detected via violation of a Bell inequality, formulated in terms of zero-frequency current cross-correlators. It is shown that the Bell inequality can be violated for arbitrary strong dephasing in the normal conductor.

Energy dependent counting statistics in diffusive superconducting tunnel junctions

We present an investigation of the energy dependence of the full charge counting statistics in diffusive normal-insulating-normal-insulating-superconducting junctions. It is found that the current in general is transported via a correlated transfer of pairs of electrons. Only in the case of strongly asymmetric tunnel barriers or energies much larger than the Thouless energy is the pair transfer uncorrelated. The second cumulant, the noise, is found to depend strongly on the applied voltage and temperature. For a junction resistance dominated by the tunnel barrier to the normal reservoir, the differential shot noise shows a double peak feature at voltages of the order of the Thouless energy, a signature of an ensemble averaged electron-hole resonance.

Hanbury Brown Twiss effects in channel mixing normal-superconducting systems

An investigation of the role of the proximity effect in current cross correlations in multiterminal, channel-mixing, normal-superconducting systems is presented. The proposed experiment is an electrical analog of the optical Hanbury Brown Twiss intensity cross correlation experiment. A chaotic quantum dot is connected via quantum point contacts to two normal and one superconducting reservoir. For dominating coupling of the dot to the superconducting reservoir, a magnetic flux of the order of a flux quantum in the dot suppresses the proximity effect and reverses the sign of the cross correlations, from positive to negative. In the opposite limit, for a dominating coupling to the normal reservoirs, the proximity effect is weak and the cross correlation are positive for a nonideal contact between the dot and the superconducting reservoir. We show that in this limit the correlations can be explained with particle counting arguments.

Cascade approach to current fluctuations in a chaotic cavity

We propose a simple semiclassical method for calculating higher-order cumulants of current in multichannel mesoscopic conductors. To demonstrate its efficiency, we calculate the third and fourth cumulants of current for a chaotic cavity with multichannel leads of arbitrary transparency and compare the results with ensemble-averaged quantum-mechanical quantities. We also explain the discrepancy between the quantum-mechanical results and previous semiclassical calculations.

Semiclassical theory of current correlations in chaotic dot-superconductor systems

We present a semiclassical theory of current correlations in multiterminal chaotic dot-superconductor junctions, valid in the absence of the proximity effect in the dot. For a dominating coupling of the dot to the normal terminals and a nonperfect dot-superconductor interface, positive cross correlations are found between currents in the normal terminals. This demonstrates that positive cross correlations can be described within a semiclassical approach. We show that the semiclassical approach is equivalent to a quantum mechanical Green's function approach with suppressed proximity effect in the dot.

Chaotic dot-superconductor analog of the Hanbury Brown Twiss effect

As an electrical analog of the optical Hanbury Brown Twiss effect, we study current cross-correlations in a chaotic quantum dot-superconductor junction. One superconducting and two normal reservoirs are connected via point contacts to a chaotic quantum dot. For a wide range of contact widths and transparencies, we find large positive current correlations. The positive correlations are generally enhanced by normal backscattering in the contacts. Moreover, for normal backscattering in the contacts, the positive correlations survive when suppressing the proximity effect in the dot with a weak magnetic field.

Proximity Effect and Multiple Andreev Reflections in Chaotic Josephson junctions

We study the dc-current transport in a voltage biased superconductor-chaotic dot-superconductor junction with an induced proximity effect(PE) in the dot. It is found that for a Thouless energy $E_{Th}$ of the dot smaller than the superconducting energy gap $Δ$, the PE is manifested as peaks in the differential conductance at voltages of order $E_{Th}$ away from the even subharmonic gap structures $eV \approx 2(Δ\pm E_{Th})/2n$. These peaks are insensitive to temperatures $kT \ll Δ$ but are suppressed by a weak magnetic field. The current for suppressed PE is independent of $E_{Th}$ and magnetic field and is shown to be given by the Octavio-Tinkham-Blonder-Klapwijk theory.

Nonequilibrium Josephson current in ballistic multiterminal SNS-junctions

We study the nonequilibrium Josephson current in a long two-dimensional ballistic SNS-junction with a normal reservoir coupled to the normal part of the junction. The current for a given superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ oscillates as a function of voltage applied between the normal reservoir and the SNS-junction. The period of the oscillations is $π\hbar v_F/L$, with $L$ the length of the junction, and the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $V^{-3/2}$ for $eV \gg \hbar v_{F}/L$ and zero temperature. The critical current $I_c$ shows a similar oscillating, decaying behavior as a function of voltage, changing sign every oscillation. Normal specular or diffusive scattering at the NS-interfaces does not qualitatively change the picture.

Large sample-to-sample fluctuations of the nonequilibrium critical current through mesoscopic Josephson junctions

We present a theory for the nonequilibrium current in a mesoscopic Josephson junction which is coupled to a normal electron reservoir, and apply it to a chaotic junction. Large sample-to-sample fluctuations of the critical current $I_{\rm c}$ are found, with ${rms} I_{\rm c} \simeq \sqrt{N}eΔ/\hbar$, when the voltage difference eV between the electron reservoir and the junction exceeds the superconducting gap $Δ$ and the number of modes N connecting the junction to the superconducting electrodes is large.

Nonequilibrium Josephson effect in mesoscopic ballistic multiterminal SNS junctions

We present a detailed study of nonequilibrium Josephson currents and conductance in ballistic multiterminal SNS-devices. Nonequilibrium is created by means of quasiparticle injection from a normal reservoir connected to the normal part of the junction. By applying a voltage at the normal reservoir the Josephson current can be suppressed or the direction of the current can be reversed. For a junction longer than the thermal length, $L\ggξ_T$, the nonequilibrium current increases linearly with applied voltage, saturating at a value equal to the equilibrium current of a short junction. The conductance exhibits a finite bias anomaly around $eV \sim \hbar v_F/L$. For symmetric injection, the conductance oscillates $2π$-periodically with the phase difference $ϕ$ between the superconductors, with position of the minimum ($ϕ=0$ or $π$) dependent on applied voltage and temperature. For asymmetric injection, both the nonequilibrium Josephson current and the conductance becomes $π$-periodic in phase difference. Inclusion of barriers at the NS-interfaces gives rise to a resonant behavior of the total Josephson current with respect to junction length with a period $\sim λ_F$. Both three and four terminal junctions are studied.
