Quantum Scattering in Quasi-1D Cylindrical Confinement

Finite size effects alter not only the energy levels of small systems, but can also lead to new effective interactions within these systems. Here the problem of low energy quantum scattering by a spherically symmetric short range potential in the presence of a general cylindrical confinement is investigated. A Green's function formalism is developed which accounts for the full 3D nature of the scattering potential by incorporating all phase-shifts and their couplings. This quasi-1D geometry gives rise to scattering resonances and weakly localized states, whose binding energies and wavefunctions can be systematically calculated. Possible applications include e.g. impurity scattering in ballistic quasi-1D quantum wires in mesoscopic systems and in atomic matter wave guides. In the particular case of parabolic confinement, the present formalism can also be applied to pair collision processes such as two-body interactions. Weakly bound pairs and quasi-molecules induced by the confinement and having zero or higher orbital angular momentum can be predicted, such as p- and d-wave pairings.

Multi-electron giant dipole resonances of atoms in crossed electric and magnetic fields

Multi-electron giant dipole resonances of atoms in crossed electric and magnetic fields are investigated. Stationary configurations corresponding to a highly symmetric arrangement of the electrons on a decentered circle are derived, and a normal-mode stability analysis is performed. A classification of the various modes, which are dominated either by the magnetic or Coulomb interactions, is provided. A six-dimensional wave-packet dynamical study, based on the MCTDH approach, is accomplished for the two-electron resonances, yielding in particular lifetimes of more than 0.1 $μ$s for strong electric fields.

Matter-wave solitons of collisionally inhomogeneous condensates

We investigate the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in the presence of a spatially varying atomic scattering length and nonlinearity. The dynamics of bright and dark solitary waves is studied using the corresponding Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The numerical results are shown to be in very good agreement with the predictions of the effective equations of motion derived by adiabatic perturbation theory. The spatially dependent nonlinearity leads to a gravitational potential that allows to influence the motion of both fundamental as well as higher order solitons.

Lithium in strong magnetic fields

The electronic structure of the lithium atom in a strong magnetic field 0 <= gamma <= 10 is investigated. Our computational approach is a full configuration interaction method based on a set of anisotropic Gaussian orbitals that is nonlinearly optimized for each field strength. Accurate results for the total energies and one-electron ionization energies for the ground and several excited states for each of the symmetries ^20^+, ^2(-1)^+, ^4(-1)^+, ^4(-1)^-, ^2(-2)^+, ^4(-2)^+, $^4(-3)^{+}$ are presented. The behaviour of these energies as a function of the field strength is discussed and classified. Transition wave lengths for linear and circular polarized transitions are presented as well.

Probing the Shape of Quantum Dots with Magnetic Fields

A tool for the identification of the shape of quantum dots is developed. By preparing a two-electron quantum dot, the response of the low-lying excited states to a homogeneous magnetic field, i.e. their spin and parity oscillations, is studied for a large variety of dot shapes. For any geometric configuration of the confinement we encounter characteristic spin singlet - triplet crossovers. The magnetization is shown to be a complementary tool for probing the shape of the dot.

Rydberg Atoms in Magnetic Quadrupole Traps

We investigate the electronic structure and properties of Rydberg atoms exposed to a magnetic quadrupole field. It is shown that the spatial as well as generalized time reversal symmetries lead to a two-fold degeneracy of the electronic states in the presence of the external field. A delicate interplay between the Coulomb and magnetic interactions in the inhomogeneous field leads to an unusual weak field splitting of the energy levels as well as complex spatial patterns of the corresponding spin polarization density of individual Rydberg states. Remarkably the magnetic quadrupole field induces a permanent electric dipole moment of the atom.

Electromagnetic transitions of the helium atom in superstrong magnetic fields

We investigate the electromagnetic transition probabilities for the helium atom embedded in a superstrong magnetic field taking into account the finite nuclear mass. We address the regime γ=100-10000 a.u. studying several excited states for each symmetry, i.e. for the magnetic quantum numbers 0,-1,-2,-3, positive and negative z parity and singlet and triplet symmetry. The oscillator strengths as a function of the magnetic field, and in particular the influence of the finite nuclear mass on the oscillator strengths are shown and analyzed.

Time-Dependent Trapping of Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the influence of a time-dependent potential on the motion of solitons in a quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate by solving the corresponding Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For a suitable choice of the external potentials as well as the initial soliton characteristics time-dependent trapping of the soliton in a prescribed subarea of the condensate can be achieved. Adiabatic perturbation theory is shown to work remarkably well for large switching on times of the trapping potential and allows to perform a detailed study of the degree of trapping in the complete phase space of the soliton center. A remarkable spiral pattern of the degree of trapping as a function of the soliton characteristics is observed and explained.

Helium in superstrong magnetic fields

We investigate the helium atom embedded in a superstrong magnetic field gamma=100-10000 au. All effects due to the finite nuclear mass for vanishing pseudomomentum are taken into account. The influence and the magnitude of the different finite mass effects are analyzed and discussed. Within our full configuration interaction approach calculations are performed for the magnetic quantum numbers M=0,-1,-2,-3, singlet and triplet states, as well as positive and negative z parities. Up to six excited states for each symmetry are studied. With increasing field strength the number of bound states decreases rapidly and we remain with a comparatively small number of bound states for gamma=10^4 au within the symmetries investigated here.

Stationary components of HeI in strong magnetic fields - a tool to identify magnetic DB white dwarfs

In only three of the 61 known magnetic white dwarfs helium has been identified unambiguously while about 20% of all non-magnetic stars of this class are known to contain HeI or HeII. Until recently, data for HeI data were available only for magnetic fields below 20MG. This changed with the publication of extensive data by the group in Heidelberg. The corresponding calculations have now been completed for the energetically lowest five states of singlet and triplet symmetry for the subspaces with |m| <= 3; selected calculations have been performed for even higher excitations. In strongly magnetized white dwarfs only line components are visible whose wavelengths vary slowly with respect to the magnetic field, particularly stationary components which have a wavelength minimum or maximum in the range of the magnetic fields strengths on the stellar surface. In view of the many ongoing surveys finding white dwarfs we want to provide the astronomical community with a tool to identify helium in white dwarfs for fields up to 5.3GG. To this end we present all calculated helium line components whose wavelengths in the UV, optical, and near IR vary slowly enough with respect to the field strength to produce visible absorption features. We also list all stationary line components in this spectral range. Finally, we find series of minima and maxima which occur as a result of series of extremal transitions to increasingly higher excitations. We estimated the limits for 8 series which can possibly give rise to additional absorption in white dwarf spectra; one strong absorption feature in GD229 which is yet unexplained by stationary components is very close to two estimated series limits.

The beryllium atom and beryllium positive ion in strong magnetic fields

The ground and a few excited states of the beryllium atom in external uniform magnetic fields are calculated by means of our 2D mesh Hartree-Fock method for field strengths ranging from zero up to 2.35*10^9T. With changing field strength the ground state of the Be atom undergoes three transitions involving four different electronic configurations which belong to three groups with different spin projections S_z=0,-1,-2. For weak fields the ground state configuration arises from the 1s^2 2s^2, S_z=0 configuration. With increasing field strength the ground state evolves into the two S_z=-1 configurations 1s^22s 2p_{-1} and 1s^2 2p_{-1}3d_{-2}, followed by the fully spin polarised S_z=-2 configuration 1s2p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}. The latter configuration forms the ground state of the beryllium atom in the high field regime γ>4.567. The analogous calculations for the Be^+ ion provide the sequence of the three following ground state configurations: 1s^22s and 1s^22p_{-1} (S_z=-1/2) and 1s2p_{-1}3d_{-2} (S_z=-3/2).

A collision-induced satellite in the Lyman Beta profile due to H-H collisions

We present a theoretical profile of the Lyman Beta line of atomic hydrogen perturbed by collisions with neutral hydrogen atoms and protons. We use a general unified theory in which the electric dipole moment varies during a collision. A collision-induced satellite appears on Lyman Beta, correlated to the B''\barB 1Sigma+u - X 1Sigma+g asymptotically forbidden transition of H_2. As a consequence, the appearance of the line wing between Lyman Alpha and Lyman Beta is shown to be sensitive to the relative abundance of hydrogen ions and neutral atoms, and thereby to provide a temperature diagnostic for stellar atmospheres and laboratory plasmas.

We use a recently found parametrization of the solutions of the inverse Frobenius-Perron problem within the class of complete unimodal maps to develop a Monte-Carlo approach for the construction of one-dimensional chaotic dynamical laws with given statistical properties, i.e. invariant density and autocorrelation function. A variety of different examples are presented to demonstrate the power of our method.

Ground states of the atoms H, He,...., Ne and their singly positive ions in strong magnetic fields: The high field regime

The electronic structure of the ground and some excited states of neutral atoms with the nuclear charge numbers $1\leq Z \leq 10$ and their single positive ions are investigated by means of our 2D mesh Hartree-Fock method for strong magnetic fields $0.5\leq γ\leq 10000$. For $γ=10000$ the ground state configurations of all the atoms and ions considered are given by fully spin-polarized configurations of single-electron orbitals with magnetic quantum numbers ranging from m=0 to m=-N+1 where N is the number of the electrons. Focusing on the fully spin polarized situation we provide critical values of the magnetic field strength for which crossovers with respect to the spatial symmetries of the ground state take place. It is found that the neutral atoms and singly charged positive ions with $2\leq Z \leq 5$ have one fully spin-polarized ground state configuration whereas for $6\leq Z \leq 10$ one intermediate fully spin-polarized configuration with an orbital of 2p_0 type occurs.

The ground state of the carbon atom in strong magnetic fields

The ground and a few excited states of the carbon atom in external uniform magnetic fields are calculated by means of our 2D mesh Hartree-Fock method for field strengths ranging from zero up to 2.35 10^9 T. With increasing field strength the ground state undergoes six transitions involving seven different electronic configurations which belong to three groups with different spin projections S_z=-1,-2,-3. For weak fields the ground state configuration arises from the field-free 1s^2 2s^2 2p_0 2p_{-1}, S_z=-1 configuration. With increasing field strength the ground state involves the four S_z=-2 configurations 1s^22s2p_0 2p_{-1}2p_{+1}, 1s^22s2p_0 2p_{-1}3d_{-2}, 1s^22p_0 2p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3} and 1s^22p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}5g_{-4}, followed by the two fully spin polarized S_z=-3 configurations 1s2p_02p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}5g_{-4} and 1s2p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}5g_{-4}6h_{-5}. The last configuration forms the ground state of the carbon atom in the high field regime γ>18.664. The above series of ground state configurations is extracted from the results of numerical calculations for more than twenty electronic configurations selected due to some general energetical arguments.

The helium atom in a strong magnetic field

We investigate the electronic structure of the helium atom in a magnetic field b etween B=0 and B=100a.u. The atom is treated as a nonrelativistic system with two interactin g electrons and a fixed nucleus. Scaling laws are provided connecting the fixed-nucleus Hamiltonia n to the one for the case of finite nuclear mass. Respecting the symmetries of the electronic Ham iltonian in the presence of a magnetic field, we represent this Hamiltonian as a matrix with res pect to a two-particle basis composed of one-particle states of a Gaussian basis set. The corresponding generalized eigenvalue problem is solved numerically, providing in the present paper results for vanish ing magnetic quantum number M=0 and even or odd z-parity, each for both singlet and triplet spin symmetry. Total electronic energies of the ground state and the first few excitations in each su bspace as well as their one-electron ionization energies are presented as a function of the magnetic fie ld, and their behaviour is discussed. Energy values for electromagnetic transitions within the M=0 sub space are shown, and a complete table of wavelengths at all the detected stationary points with respect to their field dependence is given, thereby providing a basis for a comparison with observed ab sorption spectra of magnetic white dwarfs.

Exchange and correlation energies of ground states of atoms and molecules in strong magnetic fields

Using a Hartree-Fock mesh method and a configuration interaction approach based on a generalized Gaussian basis set we investigate the behaviour of the exchange and correlation energies of small atoms and molecules, namely th e helium and lithium atom as well as the hydrogen molecule, in the presence of a magnetic field covering the regime B=0-100a.u. In general the importance of the exchange energy to the binding properties of at oms or molecules increases strongly with increasing field strength. This is due to the spin-flip transitions and in particular due to the contributions of the tightly bound hydrogenic state s which are involved in the corresponding ground states of different symmetries. In contrast to the exchange energy the correlation energy becomes less relevant with increasing field strength. This holds for the individual configurations constituting the ground state and for the crossovers of the global ground state.
