Ab initio calculations with a nonspherical Gaussian basis set: Excited states of the hydrogen molecule

A basis set of generalized nonspherical Gaussian functions (GGTOs) is presented and discussed. As a first example we report on Born-Oppenheimer energies of the hydrogen molecule. Although accurate results have been obtained, we conclude that H_2 is too 'simple' to allow for a substantial gain by using nonspherical functions. We rather expect that these functions may be particularly useful in calculations on large systems. A single basis set of GGTOs was used to simultaneously calculate the potential energy curves of several states within each subspace of {1,3}Σ_{g,u} symmetry. We hereby considerd the entire region of internuclear distances 0.8 < R < 1000 a.u. In particular the results for the fourth up to sixth electronic states show a high accuracy compared to calculations which invoke explicitely correlated functions, e.g. the relative accuracy is at least of the order of magnitude of 10^{-5}a.u. Energies for the 4 ^1Σ_u^+ and 4-6 ^3Σ_u^+ were improved and accurate data for the 6 ^3Σ_g^+, 5 ^1Σ_u^+, and 6 ^1Σ_u^+ state are, to the best of the authors knowledge, presented for the first time. Energy data for the seventh up to the nineth electronic state within each subspace were obtained with an estimated error of the order of magnitude of 10^{-4}a.u. The 7 ^1Σ_g^+ and the 6 ^1Σ_u^+ state were found to exhibit a very broad deep outer well at large internuclear distances.

Evidence for helium in the magnetic white dwarf GD229

The nature of the strong absorption features in the white dwarf GD229 has been a real mystery ever since it was found to be magnetic in 1974. All attempts to explain the spectrum by line components of hydrogen failed. With the first sets of newly calculated line data for HeI in a strong magnetic field we could identify most of the absorption structures in the spectrum with stationary line components in a range of magnetic fields between 300 and 700 MG. This is much lower than previously speculated and is comparable to the highest fields found in hydrogen rich magnetic white dwarfs. The reason for the large number of spectral features in GD229 is the extreme accumulation of stationary components of transitions in He I in a narrow interval of field strengths.

General theory and examples of the inverse Frobenius-Perron problem

The general solution of the inverse Frobenius-Perron problem considering the construction of a fully chaotic dynamical system with given invariant density is obtained within the class of one-dimensional unimodal maps. Some interesting connections between this solution and the approach via conjugation transformations are eluminated. The developed method is applied to obtain a wide class of maps having as invariant density the two-parametric beta-probability density function. Varying the parameters of the density a rich variety of dynamics is observed. Observables like autocorrelation functions, power spectra and Lyapunov exponents are calculated for representatives of this family of maps and some theoretical predictions concerning the decay of correlations are tested.

The ground state of the Lithium atom in strong magnetic fields

The ground and some excited states of the Li atom in external uniform magnetic fields are calculated by means of our 2D mesh Hartree-Fock method for field strengths ranging from zero up to 2.35 10^8 T. With increasing field strength the ground state undergoes two transitions involving three different electronic configurations: for weak fields the ground state configuration arises from the field-free 1s^22s configuration, for intermediate fields from the 1s^22p_{-1} configuration and in high fields the 1s2p_{-1}3d_{-2} electronic configuration is responsible for the properties of the atom. The transition field strengths are determined. Calculations on the ground state of the Li+ ion allow us to describe the field-dependent ionization energy of the Li atom. Some general arguments on the ground states of multi-electron atoms in strong magnetic fields are provided.

Positronium in crossed electric and magnetic fields: the existence of a long-lived ground state

It was earlier reported [PRL 78 199, (1997)] that long-lived excited states of positronium can be formed in crossed electric and magnetic fields at laboratory field strengths. Unlike the lower-lying states that are localized in the magnetically distorted Coulomb well, these long-lived states which can possess a lifetime up to many years are localized in an outer potential well that is formed for certain values of the pseudomomentum and magnetic field. The present work extends the original analysis and studies the dependence of the spectrum as a function of field strength and pseudomomentum over a wide range of parameters. We predict that in the limit of large pseudomomentum, the ground state of positronium atom in a magnetic field will become delocalized; for strong fields, the binding energy of this state is quite large, resulting in a ground state that is both stable against direct annihilation and against ionization by low frequency background radiation.

Analytical solutions to one-dimensional dissipative and discrete chaotic dynamics

Analytical solutions to the chaotic and ergodic motion of a certain class of one-dimensional dissipative and discrete dynamical systems are derived. This allows us to obtain exact expressions for physical properties like the time correlation function. We illustrate our solutions by means of a few examples for which conventional numerical trajectory calculations fail to predict the correct behaviour.

The hydrogen molecule in magnetic fields: The ground states of the Sigma manifold of the parallel configuration

The electronic structure of the hydrogen molecule is investigated for the parallel configuration. The ground states of the Sigma manifold are studied for ungerade and gerade parity as well as singlet and triplet states covering a broad regime of field strengths from B = 0 up to B = 100a.u. A variety of interesting phenomena can be observed. For the ^1Sigma_g state we found a monotonous decrease of the equilibrium distance and a simultaneously increase of the dissociation energy with growing magnetic field strength. The ^3Σ_g state is shown to develop an additional minimum which has no counterpart in field-free space. The ^1Σ_u state shows a monotonous increase in the dissociation energy with first increasing and than decreasing internuclear distance of the minimum. For this state the dissociation channel is H_2 to H^- + H^+ for magnetic-field strengths B greater than 20a.u. due to the existence of strongly bound H^- states in strong magnetic fields. The repulsive ^3Σ_u state possesses a very shallow van der Waals minimum for magnetic-field strengths smaller than 1.0a.u. within the numerical accuracy of our calculations. The ^1Σ_g and ^3Σ_u states cross as a function of B and the ^3Σ_u state, which is an unbound state, becomes the ground state of the hydrogen molecule in magnetic fields B greater than 0.2a.u. This is of particular interest for the existence of molecular hydrogen in the vicinity of white dwarfs. In superstrong fields the ground state is again a strongly bound state, the ^3Π_u state.

Hydrogen molecule in a magnetic field: The lowest states of the Pi manifold and the global ground state of the parallel configuration

The electronic structure of the hydrogen molecule in a magnetic field is investigated for parallel internuclear and magnetic field axes. The lowest states of the $Π$ manifold are studied for spin singlet and triplet$(M_s = -1) $ as well as gerade and ungerade parity for a broad range of field strengths $0 \leq B \leq 100 a.u.$ For both states with gerade parity we observe a monotonous decrease in the dissociation energy with increasing field strength up to $B = 0.1 a.u.$ and metastable states with respect to the dissociation into two H atoms occur for a certain range of field strengths. For both states with ungerade parity we observe a strong increase in the dissociation energy with increasing field strength above some critical field strength $B_c$. As a major result we determine the transition field strengths for the crossings among the lowest $^1Σ_g$, $^3Σ_u$ and $^3Π_u$ states. The global ground state for $B \lesssim 0.18 a.u.$ is the strongly bound $^1Σ_g$ state. The crossings of the $^1Σ_g$ with the $^3Σ_u$ and $^3Π_u$ state occur at $B \approx 0.18$ and $B \approx0.39 a.u.$, respectively. The transition between the $^3Σ_u$ and $^3Π_u$ state occurs at $B \approx 12.3 a.u.$ Therefore, the global ground state of the hydrogen molecule for the parallel configuration is the unbound $^3Σ_u$ state for $0.18 \lesssim B \lesssim 12.3 a.u.$ The ground state for $B \gtrsim 12.3 a.u.$ is the strongly bound $^3Π_u$ state. This result is of great relevance to the chemistry in the atmospheres of magnetic white dwarfs and neutron stars.

A general approach to the localization of unstable periodic orbits in chaotic dynamical systems

We present a method to detect the unstable periodic orbits of a multidimensional chaotic dynamical system. Our approach allows us to locate in an efficient way the unstable cycles of, in principle, arbitrary length with a high accuracy. Based on a universal set of linear transformations the originally unstable periodic orbits are transformed into stable ones and can consequently be detected and analyzed easily. This method is applicable to dynamical systems of any dimension and requires no preknowledges with respect to the solutions of the original chaotic system. As an example of application of our method we investigate the Ikeda attractor in some detail.

A turning point analysis of the ergodic dynamics of iterative maps

The dynamics of one dimensional iterative maps in the regime of fully developed chaos is studied in detail. Motivated by the observation of dynamical structures around the unstable fixed point we introduce the geometrical concept of a turning point which represents a local minimum or maximum of the trajectory. Following we investigate the highly organized and structured distribution of turning points. The turning point dynamics is discussed and the corresponding turning point map which possesses an appealing asymptotic scaling property is investigated. Strong correlations are shown to exist for the turning point trajectories which contain the information of the fixed points as well as the stability coefficients of the dynamical system. For the more specialized case of symmetric maps which possess a symmetric density we derive universal statistical properties of the corresponding turning point dynamics. Using the turning point concept we finally develop a method for the analysis of (one dimensional) time series.
