Pion mass dependence of the nucleon mass in the chiral quark soliton model

The dependence of the nucleon mass on the mass of the pion is studied in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. A remarkable agreement is observed with lattice data from recent full dynamical simulations. The possibility and limitations to use the model results as a guideline for the chiral extrapolation of lattice data are discussed.

Sivers effect in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering

The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. Our analysis use a simple Gaussian model for the distribution of transverse parton momenta, together with the flavor dependence given by the leading 1/Nc approximation and a neglect of the Sivers antiquark distribution. We find that within the errors of the data these approximations are sufficient.

Comparing extractions of Sivers functions

A comparison is given of the various recently published extractions of the Sivers functions from the HERMES and COMPASS data on single-transverse spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering.

Sivers effect in semi-inclusive DIS and in the Drell-Yan process

The Sivers parton distribution has been predicted to obey a particular ``universality relation'', namely to have opposite sign in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the Drell-Yan process. We discuss how, on the basis of present HERMES data, this remarkable prediction of the QCD factorization approach to the description of single spin asymmetries related to the Sivers effect could be checked experimentally in future experiments at PAX and COMPASS.

The generalized parton distribution function (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) of the nucleon in the chiral quark soliton model

The unpolarized spin-flip isoscalar generalized parton distribution function (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) is studied in the large-Nc limit at a low normalization point in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. This is the first study of generalized parton distribution functions in this model, which appear only at the subleading order in the large-Nc limit. Particular emphasis is put therefore on the demonstration of the theoretical consistency of the approach. The forward limit of (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) of which only the first moment -- the anomalous isoscalar magnetic moment of the nucleon -- is known phenomenologically, is computed numerically. Observables sensitive to (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) are discussed.

Transversity distribution in spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS and in the Drell-Yan process

A review is given on single spin asymmetries in deep inelastic semi-inclusive scattering (SIDIS) and their possible theoretical understanding in the framework of QCD-induced factorization approach, wherefore predictions for transversity from the chiral quark soliton model are used. Arising difficulties to interpret most recent SIDIS data, and the possibility to access the transversity distribution in the Drell-Yan process are discussed.

Extraction of the pion-nucleon sigma-term from the spectrum of exotic baryons

The pion nucleon sigma-term is extracted on the basis of the soliton picture of the nucleon from the mass spectrum of usual and the recently observed exotic baryons, assuming that they have positive parity. The value found is consistent with that inferred by means of conventional methods from pion nucleon scattering data. The study can also be considered as a phenomenological consistency check of the soliton picture of baryons.

The sigma-term form factor of the nucleon in the large-Nc limit

The scalar isoscalar form factor of the nucleon is calculated in the limit of a large number of colours in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. The calculation is based on an approximation justified by arguments from the instanton model of the QCD vacuum, from which the chiral quark-soliton model was derived. The simple parameter-free result reproduces all features of the form factor observed in previous exact calculations in that model and in chiral perturbation theory, and well agrees with the available phenomenological information. The Feynman-Hellmann theorem is used to study the pion mass dependence of the nucleon mass and a good agreement with lattice QCD results is observed.

Collins effect and single spin azimuthal asymmetries in the HERMES and COMPASS experiments

Predictions are made for single spin azimuthal asymmetries due to the Collins effect in pion production from semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering off transversely and longitudinally polarized targets for the HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The x-dependence of the asymmetries is evaluated using the parton distribution functions from the chiral quark-soliton model. The overall normalization of the predicted asymmetries is determined by the information on the Collins fragmentation function extracted from previous HERMES data on azimuthal asymmetries from a longitudinally polarized target. The single spin asymmetries from the transversely polarized proton target are found to be about 20% for positive and neutral pions both at HERMES and COMPASS. For a longitudinally polarized target we obtain for COMPASS a sin(phi) asymmetry of 1% and a sin(2phi) asymmetry of about 3%.

Azimuthal single spin asymmetries in SIDIS in the light of chiral symmetry breaking

An attempt is made to understand the z-dependence of the azimuthal single spin asymmetries observed by the HERMES collaboration in terms of chiral models based on effective quark and Goldstone boson degrees of freedom. The effects of respectively neglecting and considering Gaussian intrinsic parton transverse momenta and the Sivers effect are explored. Predictions for the transverse target polarization experiment at HERMES are presented.

The chirally-odd twist-3 distribution e(x)

Properties of the nucleon twist-3 distribution function e(x) are reviewed. It is emphasized that the QCD equations of motion imply the existence of a delta-function at x=0 in e(x), which gives rise to the pion-nucleon sigma-term. According to the resulting ``practical'' DIS sum rules the first and the second moment of e(x) vanish, a situation analogue to that of the pure twist-3 distribution function $\bar{g}_2(x)$.

Sivers vs. Collins effect in azimuthal single spin asymmetries in pion production in SIDIS

Recently it has been argued that the transverse momentum dependent twist-2 Sivers distribution function does not vanish in QCD. Therefore both, the Collins and Sivers effects, should be considered in order to explain the azimuthal single spin asymmetries A(UL) in pion production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton scattering of a longitudinally polarized target. On the basis of presently available phenomenological information on the Sivers function we estimate that for those asymmetries A(UL) in the kinematic region of the HERMES experiments the Sivers effect can be neglected with respect to the Collins effect. It is argued that the same feature holds also for the COMPASS and CLAS experiments. This justifies theoretical approaches to understand the HERMES data on the basis of the Collins effect only.

The chirally-odd twist-3 distribution function e(x) in the chiral quark-soliton model

The chirally-odd twist-3 nucleon distribution e(x) is studied in the large-Nc limit in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model at a low normalization point of about 0.6 GeV. The remarkable result is that in the model e(x) contains a delta-function-type singularity at x=0. The regular part of e(x) is found to be sizeable at the low scale of the model and in qualitative agreement with bag model calculations.

Polynomiality of helicity off-forward distribution functions in the chiral quark-soliton model

The polynomiality condition -- i.e. the property that Mellin moments of off-forward distribution functions are even polynomials in the skewedness parameter -- is a demanding check of consistency for model approaches. We demonstrate that the helicity off-forward distribution functions in the chiral quark-soliton model satisfy the polynomiality property. The proof contributes to the demonstration that the description of off-forward distribution functions in the model is consistent.

Polynomiality of unpolarized off-forward distribution functions and the D-term in the chiral quark-soliton model

Mellin moments of off-forward distribution functions are even polynomials of the skewedness parameter. This constraint, called polynomiality property, follows from Lorentz- and time-reversal invariance. We prove that the unpolarized off-forward distribution functions in the chiral quark-soliton model satisfy the polynomiality property. The proof is an important contribution to the demonstration that the description of off-forward distribution functions in the model is consistent. As a byproduct of the proof we derive explicit model expressions for moments of the D-term and compute the first coefficient in the Gegenbauer expansion for this term.
