Enhanced symmetry and Entropy of Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetime

In this paper we show that the equation of motion of a massless scalar particle near the black hole (BH) horizon in the Schwarzschild-deSitter (SdS) spacetime enjoys a hidden conformal symmetry when the two horizons satisfy a quadratic relation, not related with the Nariai limit. This hidden symmetry is $SL(2,\mathbb{R})\times SO(2)$ instead of $SO(2,1)\times SO(2)$, the expected symmetry of $dS_2\times S^2$. We present a structural analysis of SdS spacetime and compute the leading quantum corrections to the entropy of SdS spacetime in a semi-classical way.

On cosmological expansion and local physics

We find an exact convergence in the local dynamics described by two supposedly antagonistic approaches in modern cosmology: one starting from an expanding universe perspective such as FLRW, the other based on a local model ignoring any notion of expansion, such as Schwarzschild dS. Both models are in complete agreement when the local effects of the expansion are circumscribed to the presence of the cosmological constant. We elaborate in the relevant role of static backgrounds like the Schwarzschild-dS metric in standard form as the most proper coordinatizations to describe physics at the local scale. Finally, making use of an old and too often forgotten relativistic kinematical invariant, we clarify some widespread misunderstandings on space expansion, cosmological and gravitational redshifts. As a byproduct we propose a {\sl unique and unambiguous} prescription to match the local and cosmological expression of a specific observable.

The Full Lepton Flavor of the Littlest Higgs Model with T-parity

We re-examine lepton flavor violation (LFV) in the Littlest Higgs model with T--parity (LHT) including the full T--odd (non-singlet) lepton and Goldstone sectors. The heavy leptons induce two independent sources of LFV associated with the couplings necessary to give masses to the T--odd mirror fermions and to their partners in right-handed $SO(5)$ multiplets, respectively. The latter, which have been neglected in the past, can be decoupled from gauge mediated processes but not from Higgs mediated ones and must therefore also be included in a general analysis of LFV in the LHT. We also further extend previous analyses by considering on-shell $Z$ and Higgs LFV decays together with the LFV processes at low momentum transfer. We show that current experimental limits can probe the LHT parameter space up to global symmetry breaking scales $f \sim 10$ TeV. For lower $f$ values $\gtrsim 1$ TeV, $μ-e$ transitions require the misalignment between the heavy and the Standard Model charged leptons to be $\lesssim 1 \, \%$. Future LFV experiments using intense muon beams should be sensitive to misalignments below the per mille level. For $τ$ LFV transitions, which could potentially be observed at Belle II and the LHC as well as future lepton colliders, we find that generically they can not discriminate between the LHT and supersymmetric models though in some regions of parameter space this may be possible.

Lepton Flavor Changing Higgs decays in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-parity

We calculate loop induced lepton flavor violating Higgs decays in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity. We find that a finite amplitude is obtained only when all contributions from the T-odd lepton sector are included. This is in contrast to lepton flavor violating processes mediated by gauge bosons where the partners of the right-handed mirror leptons can be decoupled from the spectrum. These partners are necessary to cancel the divergence in the Higgs mass introduced by the mirror leptons but are otherwise unnecessary and assumed to be decoupled in previous phenomenological studies. Furthermore, as we emphasize, including the partner leptons in the spectrum also introduces a new source of lepton flavor violation via their couplings to the physical pseudo-Goldstone electroweak triplet scalar. Although this extra source also affects lepton flavor changing gauge transitions, it decouples from these amplitudes in the limit of heavy mass for the partner leptons. We find that the corresponding Higgs branching ratio into taus and muons can be as large as $\sim 0.2 \times 10^{-6}$ for T-odd masses of the order a few TeV, a demanding challenge even for the high luminosity LHC.

Insights into $Q^2 \bar{Q}^2$ states from an effective perspective

We discuss the two photon coupling of the lightest scalar meson on the basis of an extension of $χ$PT. Using low energy data on the pion form-factor and the $γγ\to π^+π^-(π^0π^0)$ cross-sections as inputs, we find $Γ(σ\toγγ) \cong 0.126~\rm{keV} $. The smallness of the result and the relative weight between its components, ${Γ_{γγ\to S_1}\over Γ{ γγ\toππ\to S_1}} < 1$, suggests that the scalar $0^{++}$ meson is mainly a $Q^2\bar{Q}^2$ state.

The lowest resonance in QCD from low--energy data

We show that a generalization of $su(2)$ Chiral Perturbation Theory, including a perturbative singlet scalar field, converges faster towards the physical value of sensible low--energy observables. The physical mass and width of the scalar particle are obtained through a simultaneous analysis of the pion radius and the gamma gamma -> pi^0 pi^0 cross-section. Both values are statistically consistent with the ones obtained by using Roy equations in pi-pi scattering. In addition we find indications that the photon-photon-singlet coupling is quite small.

An effective theory of accelerated expansion

We work out an effective theory of accelerated expansion to describe general phenomena of inflation and acceleration (dark energy) in the Universe. Our aim is to determine from theoretical grounds, in a physically-motivated and model independent way, which and how many (free) parameters are needed to broadly capture the physics of a theory describing cosmic acceleration. Our goal is to make as much as possible transparent the physical interpretation of the parameters describing the expansion. We show that, at leading order, there are five independent parameters, of which one can be constrained via general relativity tests. The other four parameters need to be determined by observing and measuring the cosmic expansion rate only, H(z). Therefore we suggest that future cosmology surveys focus on obtaining an accurate as possible measurement of $H(z)$ to constrain the nature of accelerated expansion (dark energy and/or inflation).

Chiral effective theory with a light scalar and lattice QCD

We extend the usual chiral perturbation theory framework ($χ$PT) to allow the inclusion of a light dynamical isosinglet scalar. Using lattice QCD results, and a few phenomenological inputs, we explore the parameter space of the effective theory. We discuss the S-wave pion-pion scattering lengths, extract the average value of the two light quark masses and evaluate the impact of the dynamical singlet field in the low--energy constants $\bar{l}_1$, $\bar{l}_3$ and $\bar{l}_4$ of $χ$PT. We also show how to extract the mass and width of the sigma resonance from chiral extrapolations of lattice QCD data.

The effective Lagrangian of dark energy from observations

Using observational data on the expansion rate of the universe (H(z)) we constrain the effective Lagrangian of the current accelerated expansion. Our results show that the effective potential is consistent with being flat i.e., a cosmological constant; it is also consistent with the field moving along an almost flat potential like a pseudo-Goldstone boson. We show that the potential of dark energy does not deviate from a constant at more than 6% over the redshift range 0 < z < 1. The data can be described by just a constant term in the Lagrangian and do not require any extra parameters; therefore there is no evidence for augmenting the number of parameters of the LCDM paradigm. We also find that the data justify the effective theory approach to describe accelerated expansion and that the allowed parameters range satisfy the expected hierarchy. Future data, both from cosmic chronometers and baryonic acoustic oscillations, that can measure H(z) at the % level, could greatly improve constraints on the flatness of the potential or shed some light on possible mechanisms driving the accelerated expansion. Besides the above result, it is shown that the effective Lagrangian of accelerated expansion can be constrained from cosmological observations in a model-independent way and that direct measurements of the expansion rate H(z) are most useful to do so.

A note on the string spectrum at the Hagedorn temperature

We discuss semi-classical string configurations at finite temperature. We find that those soliton solution in the background describing type IIA strings disappear or become divergent when we approach the Hagedorn temperature in the strong coupling regime. These findings together with a semi-classical analysis for the Hawking radiation let us to think that Hawking radiation is mainly driven by the existence of highly excited states. As by side, we check that beside the thermodynamical instability the system is dynamical unstable before reaching the Hagedorn temperature.

A note on the determination of light quark masses

We provide a model-independent determination of the quantity B_0(m_d-m_u). Our approach rests only on chiral symmetry and data from the decay of the eta into three neutral pions. Since the low-energy prediction at next-to-leading order fails to reproduce the experimental results, we keep the strong interaction correction as an unknown parameter. As a first step, we relate this parameter to the quark mass difference using data from the Dalitz plot. A similar relation is obtained using data from the decay width. Combining both relations we obtain B_0(m_d-m_u)=(4495+/-440) MeV^2. The preceding value, combined with lattice determinations, leads to the values m_u(2 GeV)=(2.9+/-0.8) MeV and m_d(2 GeV)=(4.7+/-0.8) MeV.

A silence black hole: Hawking radiation at the Hagedorn temperature

We compute semi-classically the Hawking emission for different types of black hole in type II string theory. In particular we analyze the thermal transition between NS5 branes and Little String Theory, finding compelling evidence for information recovering. We find that once the near horizon limit is taken the emission of a full family of models is exactly thermal even if back-reaction is taken into account. Consequently these theories are non-unitary and can not convey any information about the black hole internal states. It is argue that this behaviour matches the string theory expectations. We suggest a plausible reason for the vanishing of the jet-quenching parameter in such theories.

Heavy hadron spectra from spin chains and strings

We study the spectrum of hadronic states made up of very massive complex scalar fields in a confining gauge theory admitting a supergravity dual background. We show that for a sub-sector of operators dual to certain spinning strings, the mass spectrum exhibits an integrable structure equal to the Heisenberg spin chain, up to an overall factor. This result is compared with the corresponding string prediction.

Notes on a SQCD-like plasma dual and holographic renormalization

We study the thermodynamics and the jet quenching parameter of a black hole solution dual to a SQCD-like plasma which includes the backreaction of fundamental flavors. The free energy is calculated in several ways, including some recently proposed holographic renormalization prescriptions. The validity of the latter is confirmed by the consistency with the other methods. The resulting thermodynamic properties are similar to the Little String Theory ones: the temperature is fixed at the Hagedorn value and the free energy is vanishing. Finally, an accurate analysis of the relevant string configurations shows that the jet quenching parameter is zero in this model, in agreement with previous findings.

The anomalous chiral Lagrangian of order $p^6$

We construct the effective chiral Lagrangian for chiral perturbation theory in the mesonic odd-intrinsic-parity sector at order $p^6$. The Lagrangian contains 24 in principle measurable terms and no contact terms for the general case of $N_f$ light flavours, 23 terms for three and 5 for two flavours. In the two flavour case we need a total of 13 terms if an external singlet vector field is included. We discuss and implement the methods used to reduce to a minimal set. The infinite parts needed for renormalization are calculated and presented as well.

Semiclassical string spectrum in a string model dual to large N QCD

We explore the string spectrum in the Witten QCD model by considering classical string configurations, thereby obtaining energy formulas for quantum states with large excitation quantum numbers representing glueballs and Kaluza-Klein states. In units of the string tension, the energies of all states increase as the 't Hooft coupling $λ$ is decreased, except the energies of glueballs corresponding to strings lying on the horizon, which remain constant. We argue that some string solutions can be extrapolated to the small $λ$ regime. We also find the classical mechanics description of supergravity glueballs in terms of point-like string configurations oscillating in the radial direction, and reproduce the glueball energy formula previously obtained by solving the equation for the dilaton fluctuation.

Forward-backward asymmetries of lepton pairs in events with a large transverse momentum jet at hadron colliders

We discuss forward-backward charge asymmetries for lepton pair production in association with a large transverse momentum jet at hadron colliders. The measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry relative to the jet direction A_{FB}^j gives a new determination of the effective weak mixing angle sin^2{θ_{eff}^{lept}(M_Z^2)} with in principle a statistical precision after cuts of \sim 10^{-3} (8 x 10^{-3}) at LHC (Tevatron), due to the large cross section of the process with initial gluons. The identification of b jets also allows for the measurement of the bottom quark Z asymmetry A_{FB}^b at hadron colliders although with a lower precision than at LEP, the resulting statistical precision for sin^2{θ_{eff}^{lept}(M_Z^2)} being \sim 9 x 10^{-4} (2 x 10^{-2} at Tevatron).

Flavour Mixing, Gauge Invariance and Wave-function Renormalisation

We clarify some aspects of the LSZ formalism and wave function renormalisation for unstable particles in the presence of electroweak interactions when mixing and CP violation are considered. We also analyse the renormalisation of the CKM mixing matrix which is closely related to wave function renormalisation. We critically review earlier attempts to define a set of "on-shell" wave function renormalisation constants. With the aid of an extensive use of the Nielsen identities complemented by explicit calculations we corroborate that the counter term for the CKM mixing matrix must be explicitly gauge independent and demonstrate that the commonly used prescription for the wave function renormalisation constants leads to gauge parameter dependent amplitudes, even if the CKM counter term is gauge invariant as required. We show that a proper LSZ-compliant prescription leads to gauge independent amplitudes. The resulting wave function renormalisation constants necessarily possess absorptive parts, but we verify that they comply with the expected requirements concerning CP and CPT. The results obtained using this prescription are different (even at the level of the modulus squared of the amplitude) from the ones neglecting the absorptive parts in the case of top decay. The difference is numerically relevant.
