Radiative corrections to K_{l3} decays

We present a complete calculation of the K_{l3} decays K^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu_l and K^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu_l to O(p^4, (m_d-m_u) p^2, e^2 p^2) in chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons. We introduce the concept of generalized form factors and kinematical densities in the presence of electromagnetism, and propose a possible treatment of the real photon emission in K^+_{l3} decays. We illustrate our results by applying them to the extraction of the Kobayashi--Maskawa matrix element |V_{us}| from the experimental K^+_{e3} decay parameters.

Electromagnetic corrections to gamma pi(+) -> pi(0) pi(+)

The amplitude for the anomalous transitions gamma pi(+) -> pi(0) pi(+) is analyzed within Chiral Perturbation Theory including electromagnetic interactions. The presence of a t-channel one-photon exchange contribution induces sizeable e^2 corrections which enhance the cross-section in the threshold region and bring the theoretical prediction into agreement with available data. In the case of the crossed reaction gamma pi(0) -> pi(+) pi(-), the same contribution appears in the s-channel and its effects are small.

Isospin breaking corrections to low-energy pi-K scattering

We evaluate the matrix elements for the processes pi^0 K^0 -> pi^0 K^0 and pi^- K^+ -> pi^0 K^0 in the presence of isospin breaking terms at leading and next-to-leading order. As a direct application the releveant combination of the S-wave scattering lengths involved in the pion-kaon atom lifetime is determined. We discuss the sensitivity of the results with respect to the input parameters.

Eta' Mass and Chiral Symmetry Breaking at Large Nc and Nf

We propose a method for implementing the large-Nc, large-Nf limit of QCD at the effective Lagrangian level. Depending on the value of the ratio Nf/Nc, different patterns of chiral symmetry breaking can arise, leading in particular to different behaviors of the eta-prime mass in the combined large-N limit.

QCD Isospin Breaking in Meson Masses, Decay Constants and Quark Mass Ratios

The procedure to calculate masses and matrix-elements in the presence of mixing of the basis states is explained in detail. We then apply this procedure to the two-loop calculation in Chiral Perturbation Theory of pseudoscalar masses and decay constants including quark mass isospin breaking. These results are used to update our analysis of $K_{\ell4}$ done previously and obtain a value of $m_u/m_d$ in addition to values for the low-energy-constants $L_i^r$.

$K_{\ell 4}$ Form-Factors and $π$-$π$ Scattering

The $F$ and $G$ form-factors of $K_{\ell4}$ and the quark condensates are calculated to ${\cal O}(p^6)$ in Chiral Perturbation Theory (CHPT). Full formulas are presented as much as possible. A full refit of most of the ${\cal O}(p^4)$ CHPT parameters is done with a discussion of all inputs and underlying assumptions. We discuss the consequences for the vacuum expectation values, decay constants, pseudoscalar masses and $π$-$π$ scattering.

Low Energy Constants from Kl4 Form-Factors

We have calculated the form-factors F and G in K ---> pi pi e nu decays (Kl4) to two-loop order in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). Combining this together with earlier two-loop calculations an updated set of values for the L's, the ChPT constants at p^4, is obtained. We discuss the uncertainties in the determination and the changes compared to previous estimates.

Chiral Perturbation Theory with Virtual Photons and Leptons

We construct a low-energy effective field theory which allows the full treatment of isospin-breaking effects in semileptonic weak interactions. To this end, we enlarge the particle spectrum of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons by including also the light leptons as dynamical degrees of freedom. Using super-heat-kernel techniques, we determine the additional one-loop divergences generated by the presence of virtual leptons and give the full list of associated local counterterms. We illustrate the use of our effective theory by applying it to the decays pi -> l nu_{l} and K -> l nu_{l}.

Low-energy photon-photon fusion into three pions in Generalized Chiral Perturbation Theory

The processes $γγ\toπ^0π^0π^0$ and $γγ\to π^+ π^- π^0$ are considered in Generalized Chiral Perturbation theory, in view of their potential sensitivity to the mechanism of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and to various counterterms. The amplitudes are computed up to order ${\cal O}(p^6)$. The event production rates are estimated for the Daphne $ϕ$-Factory and for a future $τ$-Charm Factory.

The Vector and Scalar Form Factors of the Pion to Two Loops

We calculate the vector and scalar form factors of the pion to two loops in Chiral Perturbation Theory. We estimate the unknown O(p^6) constants using resonance exchange. We make a careful comparison to the available data and determine two O(p^4) constants rather precisely, and two O(p^6) constants less precisely. We also use Chiral Perturbation Theory to two loops to extract in a model--independent manner the charge radius of the pion from the available data, and obtain \rpiV=0.437\pm 0.016 fm^2.

Report of the Working Group on Goldstone Boson Production and Decay

This is the summary of the working group on Goldstone Boson Production and Decay of the Chiral Dynamics Workshop in Mainz, September 1-5, 1997. For the production aspects we discuss $π^0$ and $η$ production in nucleon-nucleon collisions and the behaviour of hadrons in various sum rules. For the decays we present a discussion on various $K$, $η$ and $π$ decay channels. Other aspects discussed are a new treatment of meson-meson scattering, the light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and progress in various aspects of the $p^6$ generating functional in the mesonic sector.

Vector Meson Masses in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We discuss the vector meson masses within the context of Chiral Perturbation Theory performing an expansion in terms of the momenta, quark masses and 1/Nc. We extend the previous analysis to include isospin breaking effects and also include up to order $p^4$. We discuss vector meson chiral perturbation theory in some detail and present a derivation from a relativistic lagrangian. The unknown coefficients are estimated in various ways. We also discuss the relevance of electromagnetic corrections and the implications of the present calculation for the determination of quark masses.

Matching the Heavy Vector Meson Theory

We show how to obtain a ``heavy'' meson effective lagrangian for the case where the number of heavy particles is not conserved. We apply the method in a simple example at tree level and perform then the reduction for the case of vector mesons in Chiral Perturbation Theory in a manifestly chiral invariant fashion. Some examples showing that ``heavy'' meson effective theory also works at the one-loop level are included.

Chiral-loop and vector-meson contributions to eta -> pi pi gamma gamma decays

The process eta -> pi0 pi0 gamma gamma is discussed in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) extending two recent analyses. Special attention is devoted to one-loop corrections, eta-eta' mixing effects and vector-meson dominance of ChPT counter-terms. The less interesting eta -> pi^+ pi^- gamma gamma transition is briefly discussed too.

$π\to lνγ$ Form Factors at Two-loop

Within Chiral Perturbation Theory (CHPT) we compute the form factors A, V and $γ= A/V$ in the $π\to νl γ$ decay to $O(p^6)$. A and $γ$ obtain corrections of order 25%.

Neural network analysis for gamma gamma -> 3pi at Daphne

We consider the possibility of using neural networks in experimental data analysis in Daphne. We analyze the process $γγ\to π^+ π^- π^0$ and its backgrounds using neural networks and we compare their performances with traditional methods of applying cuts on several kinematical variables. We find that the neural networks are more efficient and can be of great help for processes with small number of produced events.

$γγ\to πππ$ to One Loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory

The $γγ\to π^0 π^0 π^0$ and $γγ\to π^+ π^- π^0$ amplitudes are discussed in the general context of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) to $O(p^6)$. Chiral loops are found to play a major role. This makes these processes a good test of ChPT, mainly in its anomalous sector. We correct earlier numerical results at tree level and determine the one-loop results as well.
