Search for charmonium and charmonium-like states in Υ(2S) radiative decays

Using a sample of 158 million Υ(2S) events collected with the Belle detector, charmonium and charmonium-like states with even charge parity are searched for in Υ(2S) radiative decays. No significant χ_{cJ} or η_c signal is observed and the following upper limits at 90% confidence level (C.L.) are obtained: BR(Υ(2S)\to γχ_{c0})< 1.0 \times 10^{-4}, BR(Υ(2S) \to γχ_{c1})<3.6 \times 10^{-6}, BR(Υ(2S) \to γχ_{c2})<1.5 \times 10^{-5}, and BR(Υ(2S) \to γη_c)< 2.7 \times 10^{-5}. No significant signal of any charmonium-like state is observed, and we obtain the limits \BR(Υ(2S)\to γX(3872))\times\BR(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ)< 0.8 \times 10^{-6}, BR(Υ(2S) \to γX(3872))\times BR(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-π^0 J/ψ)< 2.4\times 10^{-6}, BR(Υ(2S) \to γX(3915))\times BR(X(3915)\toωJ/ψ)< 2.8\times 10^{-6}, BR(Υ(2S) \to γY(4140))\times BR(Y(4140)\toϕJ/ψ)) < 1.2\times 10^{-6}, and BR(Υ(2S) \to γX(4350))\times BR(X(4350)\toϕJ/ψ))< 1.3\times 10^{-6} at 90% C.L.

Branching fraction of the isospin violating process phi to omega pi0

We examine the parametrization of the e+e- -> omega pi0 cross section in the vicinity of the phi resonance and the extraction of the branching fraction of the isospin violating process phi -> omega pi0 from experimental data. We found that there are two possible solutions of the branching fraction, one is 4 times 10^{-5}, and the other is 7 times 10^{-3}. The latter is two orders of magnitude higher than the former, which is the commonly accepted one.

On the leptonic partial widths of the excited psi states

The resonance parameters of the excited psi-family resonances, namely the psi(4040), psi(4160), and psi(4415), were determined by fitting the R-values measured by experiments. It is found that the previously reported leptonic partial widths of these states were merely one possible solutions among a four-fold ambiguity. By fitting the most precise experimental data on the R-values measured by the BES collaboration, this work presents all four sets of solutions. These results may affect the interpretation of the charmonium and charmonium-like states above 4GeV/c^2.

The First Moments of Nucleon Generalized Parton Distributions

We extrapolate the first moments of the generalized parton distributions using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The calculation is based on the one loop level with the finite range regularization. The description of the lattice data is satisfactory and the extrapolated moments at physical pion mass are consistent with the results obtained with dimensional regularization, although the extrapolation in the momentum transfer to $t=0$ does show sensitivity to form factor effects which lie outside the realm of chiral perturbation theory. We discuss the significance of the results in the light of modern experiments as well as QCD inspired models.

The Discrepancy Between tau and e+e- Spectral Functions Revisited and the Consequences for the Muon Magnetic Anomaly

We revisit the procedure for comparing the pi pi spectral function measured in tau decays to that obtained in e+e- annihilation. We re-examine the isospin-breaking corrections using new experimental and theoretical input, and find improved agreement between the tau- --> pi- pi0 nu_tau branching fraction measurement and its prediction using the isospin-breaking-corrected e+e- --> pi+pi- spectral function, though not resolving all discrepancies. We recompute the lowest order hadronic contributions to the muon g-2 using e+e- and tau data with the new corrections, and find a reduced difference between the two evaluations. The new tau-based estimate of the muon magnetic anomaly is found to be 1.9 standard deviations lower than the direct measurement.

Anisotropic surface plasmon-coupled emission from structured PMMA films doped with Rhodamine B

We report observation of anisotropic surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) from structured PMMA films doped with Rhodamine B (RhB) and deposited on silver films. For a given structure, it is observed that relative position of incident laser spot to the structured PMMA and polarization properties of the laser beam can be used to modulate the SPCE patterns. The proposed method enables azimuthally controlling directional SPCE in a deterministic manner.

Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.

Multiple solutions in extracting physics information from experimental data

Multiple solutions exist in various experimental situations whenever the sum of several amplitudes is used to fit the experimentally measured distributions, such as the cross section, the mass spectrum, or the angular distribution. We show a few examples where multiple solutions were found, while only one solution was reported in the publications. Since there is no existing rules found in choosing any one of these solutions as the physics one, we propose a simple rule which agrees with what have been adopted in previous literatures: the solution corresponding to the minimal magnitudes of the amplitudes must be the physical solution. We suggest test this rule in the future experiments.

Polarization Induced Switching Effect in Graphene Nanoribbon Edge-Defect Junction

With nonequilibrium Green's function approach combined with density functional theory, we perform an ab initio calculation to investigate transport properties of graphene nanoribbon junctions self-consistently. Tight-binding approximation is applied to model the zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) electrodes, and its validity is confirmed by comparison with GAUSSIAN03 PBC calculation of the same system. The origin of abnormal jump points usually appearing in the transmission spectrum is explained with the detailed tight-binding ZGNR band structure. Transport property of an edge defect ZGNR junction is investigated, and the tunable tunneling current can be sensitively controlled by transverse electric fields.

Excitation of surface plasmon polaritons guided mode by Rhodamine B molecules doped in PMMA stripe

In this letter we show the inclusion of Rhodamine B molecules (RhB) inside a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon waveguide enables for a precise determination of its optical characteristics. The principle relies on the coupling of the fluorescence emission of the dye to plasmonic waveguided modes allowed in of the structure. Using leakage radiation microscopy in real and reciprocal spaces, we measure the propagation constant of the mode and as well as their attenuation length.

On resonance parameter measurement and luminosity determination at e+e- collider

Expounded are the parameter measurement for narrow resonance and determination of corresponding luminosity at e+e- collider. The detailed theoretical formulas are compiled and the crucial experimental effects on observed cross section are taken into account. For luminosity determination, the iteration method is put forth which is mainly used to separate the interference effect between resonance and non-resonance decays.

Understanding the spreading patterns of mobile phone viruses

We model the mobility of mobile phone users to study the fundamental spreading patterns characterizing a mobile virus outbreak. We find that while Bluetooth viruses can reach all susceptible handsets with time, they spread slowly due to human mobility, offering ample opportunities to deploy antiviral software. In contrast, viruses utilizing multimedia messaging services could infect all users in hours, but currently a phase transition on the underlying call graph limits them to only a small fraction of the susceptible users. These results explain the lack of a major mobile virus breakout so far and predict that once a mobile operating system's market share reaches the phase transition point, viruses will pose a serious threat to mobile communications.

Strange magnetic form factor of the proton at $Q^2 = 0.23$ GeV$^2$

We determine the $u$ and $d$ quark contributions to the proton magnetic form factor at finite momentum transfer by applying chiral corrections to quenched lattice data. Heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is applied at next to leading order in the quenched, and full QCD cases for the valence sector using finite range regularization. Under the assumption of charge symmetry these values can be combined with the experimental values of the proton and neutron magnetic form factors to deduce a relatively accurate value for the strange magnetic form factor at $Q^2=0.23$ GeV$^2$, namely $G_M^s=-0.034 \pm 0.021$ $μ_N$.

Optical control of azo-polymer film loaded surface plasmon- polariton wave

An active control method of azo-polymer loaded surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) wave with tightly focused 532nm laser is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are consistent, which confirm the validity of this method. The optically active control method has the advantage of simple samples preparation, high spatial resolution and selectively control of the SPPs wave. This optical control of SPPs wave method has potential applications in integrated plasmonics.

Chiral extrapolation of octet-baryon charge radii

The charge radii of octet-baryons obtained in quenched lattice-QCD calculations are extrapolated within heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Finite-range regularization (FRR) is applied to improve the convergence of the chiral expansion and to provide estimates of quenching artifacts. Lattice values of quark distribution radii and baryon charge radii for $\mpi^2$ in the range (0.1, 0.7)$\gev^2$ are described very well with FRR. Upon estimating corrections for both finite-volume and quenching effects, the obtained charge radii of the proton, neutron and $Σ^-$ are in good agreement with experimental measurements. The predicted charge radii of the remaining octet-baryons have not yet been measured and present a challenge to future experiments.

Pre-launch estimates for GLAST sensitivity to Dark Matter annihilation signals

We investigate the sensitivity of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) to indirectly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) through the $γ$-ray signal that their pair annihilation produces. WIMPs are among the favorite candidates to explain the compelling evidence that about 80% of the mass in the Universe is non-baryonic dark matter (DM). They are serendipitously motivated by various extensions of the standard model of particle physics such as Supersymmetry and Universal Extra Dimensions (UED). With its unprecedented sensitivity and its very large energy range (20 MeV to more than 300 GeV) the main instrument on board the GLAST satellite, the Large Area Telescope (LAT), will open a new window of discovery. As our estimates show, the LAT will be able to detect an indirect DM signature for a large class of WIMP models given a cuspy profile for the DM distribution. Using the current state of the art Monte Carlo and event reconstruction software developed within the LAT collaboration, we present preliminary sensitivity studies for several possible sources inside and outside the Galaxy. We also discuss the potential of the LAT to detect UED via the electron/positron channel. Diffuse background modeling and other background issues that will be important in setting limits or seeing a signal are presented.

Uncovering individual and collective human dynamics from mobile phone records

Novel aspects of human dynamics and social interactions are investigated by means of mobile phone data. Using extensive phone records resolved in both time and space, we study the mean collective behavior at large scales and focus on the occurrence of anomalous events. We discuss how these spatiotemporal anomalies can be described using standard percolation theory tools. We also investigate patterns of calling activity at the individual level and show that the interevent time of consecutive calls is heavy-tailed. This finding, which has implications for dynamics of spreading phenomena in social networks, agrees with results previously reported on other human activities.
