Study of the Rho-pi Puzzle in Charmonium Decays

The theoretical explanations about the ``Rho-pi puzzle'' in charmonium decays are reviewed extensively, and the comparison of theoretical predications with experimental data is made whenever possible. Three methods to estimate the ratio of the branching fractions of J/psi and psi' decays are also discussed. It is pointed out that in order to understand the Rho-pi puzzle, and the dynamics of charmonium decays, systematic studies should be made in theory, phenomenology and experiment aspects.

Novel technique for monitoring the performance of the LAT instrument on board the GLAST satellite

The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is an observatory designed to perform gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range 20 MeV to 300 GeV, with supporting measurements for gamma-ray bursts from 10 keV to 25 MeV. GLAST will be launched at the end of 2007, opening a new and important window on a wide variety of high energy astrophysical phenomena . The main instrument of GLAST is the Large Area Telescope (LAT), which provides break-through high-energy measurements using techniques typically used in particle detectors for collider experiments. The LAT consists of 16 identical towers in a four-by-four grid, each one containing a pair conversion tracker and a hodoscopic crystal calorimeter, all covered by a segmented plastic scintillator anti-coincidence shield. The scientific return of the instrument depends very much on how accurately we know its performance, and how well we can monitor it and correct potential problems promptly. We report on a novel technique that we are developing to help in the characterization and monitoring of LAT by using the power of classification trees to pinpoint in a short time potential problems in the recorded data. The same technique could also be used to evaluate the effect on the overall LAT performance produced by potential instrumental problems.

Phase transition from hadronic matter to quark matter

We study the phase transition from nuclear matter to quark matter within the SU(3) quark mean field model and NJL model. The SU(3) quark mean field model is used to give the equation of state for nuclear matter, while the equation of state for color superconducting quark matter is calculated within the NJL model. It is found that at low temperature, the phase transition from nuclear to color superconducting quark matter will take place when the density is of order 2.5$ρ_0$ - 5$ρ_0$. At zero density, the quark phase will appear when the temperature is larger than about 148 MeV. The phase transition from nuclear matter to quark matter is always first order, whereas the transition between color superconducting quark matter and normal quark matter is second order.

Chiral extrapolation of nucleon magnetic form factors

The extrapolation of nucleon magnetic form factors calculated within lattice QCD is investigated within a framework based upon heavy baryon chiral effective-field theory. All one-loop graphs are considered at arbitrary momentum transfer and all octet and decuplet baryons are included in the intermediate states. Finite range regularisation is applied to improve the convergence in the quark-mass expansion. At each value of the momentum transfer ($Q^2$), a separate extrapolation to the physical pion mass is carried out as a function of $m_π$ alone. Because of the large values of $Q^2$ involved, the role of the pion form factor in the standard pion-loop integrals is also investigated. The resulting values of the form factors at the physical pion mass are compared with experimental data as a function of $Q^2$ and demonstrate the utility and accuracy of the chiral extrapolation methods presented herein.

Scaling of fluctuations in a colloidal glass

We report experimental measurements of particle dynamics in a colloidal glass in order to understand the dynamical heterogeneities associated with the cooperative motion of the particles in the glassy regime. We study the local and global fluctuation of correlation and response functions in an aging colloidal glass. The observables display universal scaling behavior following a modified power-law, with a plateau dominating the less heterogeneous short-time regime and a power-law tail dominating the highly heterogeneous long-time regime.

Numerical Study of the Stress Response of Two-Dimensional Dense Granular Packings

We investigate the Green function of two-dimensional dense random packings of grains in order to discriminate between the different theories of stress transmission in granular materials. Our computer simulations allow for a detailed quantitative investigation of the dynamics which is difficult to obtain experimentally. We show that both hyperbolic and parabolic models of stress transmission fail to predict the correct stress distribution in the studied region of the parameters space. We demonstrate that the compressional and shear components of the stress compare very well with the predictions of isotropic elasticity for a wide range of pressures and porosities and for both frictional and frictionless packings. However, the states used in this study do not include the critical isostatic point for frictional particles, so that our results do not preclude the fact that corrections to elasticity may appear at the critical point of jamming, or for other sample preparation protocols, as discussed in the main text. We show that the agreement holds in the bulk of the packings as well as at the boundaries and we validate the linear dependence of the stress profile width with depth.

Determining the upper limit of Gamma_{ee} for the Y(4260)

By fitting the R values between 3.7 and 5.0 GeV measured by the BES collaboration, the upper limit of the electron width of the newly discovered resonance Y(4260) is determined to be 580 eV at 90% C.L. Together with the BABAR measurement on the product of Gamma_{ee} and BR(Y(4260) --> pi+pi- J/psi), this implies a large decay width of Y(4260) --> pi+pi- J/psi final states.

Strange Electric Form Factor of the Proton

By combining the constraints of charge symmetry with new chiral extrapolation techniques and recent low-mass quenched lattice QCD simulations of the individual quark contributions to the electric charge radii of the baryon octet, we obtain an accurate determination of the strange electric charge radius of the proton. While this analysis provides a value for G_E^s(Q^2=0.1 GeV^2) in agreement with the best current data, the theoretical error is comparable with that expected from future HAPPEx results from JLab. Together with the earlier determination of G_M^s, this result considerably constrains the role of hidden flavor in the structure of the nucleon.

Small-polaron coherent conduction in lightly doped ReTiO$_{3+ δ/2}$ (Re=La or Nd) thin films prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition

LaTiO$_{3+δ/2}$, NdTiO$_{3+δ/2}$, and Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3+δ/2}$ thin films have been epitaxially grown on (100)SrTiO$_{3}$ and (100)LaAlO$_{3}$ single crystal substrates by using the pulsed laser deposition technique. The oxygen pressure during deposition has been carefully controlled to ensure that the films are lightly doped in the metal side near the metal-Mott-insulator boundary. A steep drop of the effective carrier number at low temperatures has been observed in some of the films, which may correspond to a gradually opening of the Spin Density Wave (SDW) gap due to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. At elevated temperatures, a thermally induced decrease of the Hall coefficient can also be clearly observed. In spite of the fact that these films were prepared from different materials in varied deposition conditions, the temperature dependence of their resistance can all be almost perfectly fitted by a small-polaron coherent conduction model ($R_s(T)=R_s(0)+Cω_α/\sinh^2(T_ω/T)$). Careful investigation on the fitting parameters implies that the frequency of the phonon coupled to the electrons may be partially related to the lattice distortion induced by the mismatch strain of the substrates.

The Y(4260) as an omega chi_{c1} molecular state

It is suggested that the newly observed Y(4260) by BARBAR collaboration is a molecular state composed of an omega and a chi_{c1}. Both the production and decay properties are discussed. A consequence for this molecular state, Y(4260), is that it decays into pi+pi-pi0 chi_{c1} with similar rate to pi+ pi- J/psi. It is also expected that Y(4260) -> pi0 pi0 J/psi is produced at half rate as Y(4260) ->pi+ pi- J/psi. These decay modes should be searched for in the B factories using initial state radiative return data and B decay data as well.

Measurement of the exclusive light hadron decays of the psi'' in e+e- experiments

The measurement of the exclusive light hadron decays of the psi'' in e+e- experiments with significant interference between the psi'' and non-resonance continuum amplitudes is discussed. The radiative correction and the Monte Carlo simulation are studied. A possible scheme to verify the destructive interference is proposed for the detectors with energy-momentum resolution of (1-2)%.

Heavy Quarkonium Physics

This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.

Neutron stars and strange stars in the chiral SU(3) quark mean field model

We investigate the equations of state for pure neutron matter and strange hadronic matter in $β$-equilibrium, including $Λ$, $Σ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons. The masses and radii of pure neutron stars and strange hadronic stars are obtained. For a pure neutron star, the maximum mass is about $1.8 M_{\mathrm{sun}}$, while for a strange hadronic star, the maximum mass is around $1.45 M_{\mathrm{sun}}$. The typical radii of pure neutron stars and strange hadronic stars are about 11.0-12.3 km and 10.7-11.7 km, respectively.

Baryon Antibaryon Nonets

The baryon-antibaryon SU(3) nonets are proposed as a scheme to classify the increased number of experimentally observed enhancements near the baryon antibaryon mass threshold. The scheme is similar to the Fermi-Yang-Sakata model, which was put forth about fifty years ago in explaining the mesons observed at that time. According to the present scheme, many new baryon-antibaryon bound states are predicted, and their possible productions in quarkonium decays and B decays are suggested for experimental search.

Liquid-gas phase transition and Coulomb instability of asymmetric nuclear systems

We use a chiral SU(3) quark mean field model to study the properties of nuclear systems at finite temperature. The liquid-gas phase transition of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter is discussed. For two formulations of the model the critical temperature, $T_c$, for symmetric nuclear matter is found to be 15.8 MeV and 17.9 MeV. These values are consistent with those derived from recent experiments. The limiting temperatures for finite nuclei are in good agreement with the experimental points.

Liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter including strangeness

We apply the chiral SU(3) quark mean field model to study the properties of strange hadronic matter at finite temperature. The liquid-gas phase transition is studied as a function of the strangeness fraction. The pressure of the system cannot remain constant during the phase transition, since there are two independent conserved charges (baryon and strangeness number). In a range of temperatures around 15 MeV (precise values depending on the model used) the equation of state exhibits multiple bifurcates. The difference in the strangeness fraction $f_s$ between the liquid and gas phases is small when they coexist. The critical temperature of strange matter turns out to be a non-trivial function of the strangeness fraction.

Current induced magnetization switching in exchange biased spin-valves for CPP-GMR heads

In contrast to earlier studies performed on simple Co/Cu/Co sandwiches, we have investigated spin transfer effects in complex spin-valve pillars with a diameter of 130nm developed for current-perpendicular to the plane (CPP) magneto-resistive heads. The structure of the samples included an exchange biased synthetic pinned layer and a free layer both laminated by insertion of several ultrathin Cu layers. Despite the small thickness of the polarizing layer, our results show that the free layer can be switched between the parallel (P) and the antiparallel (AP) states by applying current densities of the order of 10^7 A/cm^2. A strong asymmetry is observed between the two critical currents IcAP-P and IcP-AP, as predicted by the model of Slonczewski model. Thanks to the use of exchange biased structures, the stability phase diagrams could be obtained in the four quadrants of the (H, I) plan. The critical lines derived from the magnetoresistance curves measured with different sense currents, and from the resistance versus current curves measured for different applied fields, match each other very well. The main features of the phase diagrams can be reproduced by investigating the stability of the solutions of the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation including spin torque term within a macrospin model. A spin-transfer saturation effect was observed in the positive currents range. We attribute it to a de-depolarization effect which appears as a consequence of the asymmetric heating of the pillars, whose top and the bottom leads are made of different materials.

Measuring psi(3770) -> Kshort Klong as a test of the S- and D-wave mixing of charmonia

Adding to the long standing "rho-pi puzzle" in psi(3686) and J/psi decays, recently BES reported the branching ratio of psi(3686) -> Kshort Klong which is enhanced relative to the pQCD " 12% rule" expectation from the branching ratio of J/psi -> Kshort Klong. If the enhancement is due to the mixing of the S- and D-wave charmonium states as in the rho-pi case, the newly measured branching ratio of psi(3686) -> Kshort Klong gives a constraint on the psi(3770) -> Kshort Klong. It serves as a good test for the scenario of the S- and D-wave mixing in the psi(3686) and psi(3770).
