Fast Incomplete Decoherence of Nuclear Spins in Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

A scenario of quantum computing process based on the manipulation of a large number of nuclear spins in Quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnet is presented. It is found that vacuum quantum fluctuations in the QH ferromagnetic ground state at filling factor $ν=1$, associated with the virtual excitations of spin waves, lead to fast incomplete decoherence of the nuclear spins. A fundamental upper bound on the length of the computer memory is set by this fluctuation effect.

Magnetic Fractal Dimensionality of the Dielectric Breakdown Under Strong Magnetic Fields

The formation of breakdown pattern on an insulating surface under the influence of a transverse magnetic field is theoretically investigated. We have generalized the Dielectric Breakdown Model (DBM) for the case of external magnetic field. Concept of the Magnetic Fractal Dimensionality (MFD) is introduced and its universality is demonstrated. It is shown that MFD saturates with magnetic fields. The magnetic field dependence of the streamer curvature is obtained. It is conjectured that nonlinear current interaction is responsible for the experimentally observed 'spider-legs' like streamer patterns.

On the electron scattering and dephasing by the nuclear spins

We show that scattering of the conduction electrons by nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction may lead the upper limit on the mean free path in clean metals. Nuclear spins with s >1/2 may cause a strong dephasing in dirty limit due to the quadrupole coupling to the random potential fluctuations caused by static impurities and lattice imperfections.

Magnetic pair-breaking in superconducting (Ba,K)BiO_3 investigated by magnetotunneling

The de Gennes and Maki theory of gapless superconductivity for dirty superconductors is used to interpret the tunneling measurements on the strongly type-II high-Tc oxide-superconductor Ba1-xKxBiO3 in high magnetic fields up to 30 Tesla. We show that this theory is applicable at all temperatures and in a wide range of magnetic fields starting from 50 percent of the upper critical field Bc2. In this magnetic field range the measured superconducting density of states (DOS) has the simple energy dependence as predicted by de Gennes from which the temperature dependence of the pair-breaking parameter alpha(T), or Bc2(T), has been obtained. The deduced temperature dependence of Bc2(T) follows the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg prediction for classical type-II superconductors in agreement with our previous direct determination. The amplitudes of the deviations in the DOS depend on the magnetic field via the spatially averaged superconducting order parameter which has a square-root dependence on the magnetic field. Finally, the second Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa2(T) has been determined from the experimental data.

Electrons on rotationally symmetric nanoparticles under a strong magnetic field

The energy spectrum of an electron confined to an arbitrary surface of revolution in an external magnetic field, parallel to the symmetry axis, is studied analitycally and numerically. The problem is reduced via conformal mapping to one on the surface of a sphere. The case of a spheroid is considered in details, and the dependence on parameters is discussed. In the high magnetic field limit a regular structure in the energy spectrum, resembling the Landau levels, is obtained. Level statistics is discussed.

Mesoscopic mechanism of exchange interaction in magnetic multilayers

We discuss a mesoscopic mechanism of exchange interaction in ferromagnet-normal metal-ferromagnet multilayers. We show that in the case when the metal's thickness is larger than the electron mean free path, the relative orientation of magnetizations in the ferromagnets is perpendicular. The exchange energy between ferromagnets decays with the metal thickness as a power law.

Negative Magnetoresistance of Bi_2Sr_2CuO_x Single Crystals in a Strong Magnetic Fields

Magnetoresistance (MR) in the out-of-plane resistivity $ρ_c$ for the normal state of the one-layer high-quality Bi_2Sr_2CuO_x single crystals under various dc magnetic fields up to 28 T over the temperature region 6-100 K has been measured. We observed the anomalously large negative longitudinal MR up to 60%. At low temperatures the normal-state MR in contrast to the MR in mixed state is independent of the direction of the current relatively to the field direction suggesting uniquely the spin dominated origin of that. The magnitude of the MR is activated in magnetic field and temperature. We interpret the activated form of $ρ_c$ and the negative MR in terms of 2D stacked alternating metallic and dielectric layers assuming the tunneling between CuO_2 planes. If the main fluctuations inside CuO_2 planes have magnetic origin, the magnetic field suppresses these fluctuations leading to the uniform spin orientation. In this case the interlayer current will be enhanced well.

Vortex lattice melting and the damping of the dHvA oscillations in the mixed state

Phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter, which are responsible for the melting of the Abrikosov vortex lattice below the mean field $H_{c2}$, are shown to dramatically enhance the scattering of quasi-particles by the fluctuating pair potential, thus leading to enhanced damping of the dHvA oscillations in the liquid mixed state. This effect is shown to quantitatively account for the detailed field dependence of the dHvA amplitude observed recently in the mixed state of a Quasi 2D organic SC.

Is the magnetic field necessary for the Aharonov-Bohm effect in mesoscopics?

A new class of topological mesoscopic phenomena in absence of external magnetic field (meso-nucleo-spinics)is predicted, which is based on combined action of the nonequilibrium nuclear spin population and charge carriers spin-orbit interaction . As an example, we show that Aharonov-Bohm like oscillations of the persistent current in GaAs/AlGaAs based mesoscopic rings may exist, in the absence of the external magnetic field, provided that a topologically nontrivial strongly nonequilibrium nuclear spin population is created. This phenomenon is due to the breaking, via the spin-orbit coupling, of the clock wise - anti clock wise symmetry of the charge carriers momentum, which results in the oscillatory in time persistent current.

Streamer propagation in magnetic field

The propagation of a streamer near an insulating surface under the influence of a transverse magnetic field is theoretically investigated. In the weak magnetic field limit it is shown that the trajectory of the streamer has a circular form with a radius that is much larger than the cyclotron radius of an electron. The charge distribution within the streamer head is strongly polarized by the Lorentz force exerted perpendicualr to the streamer velocity. A critical magnetic field for the branching of a streamer is estimated. Our results are in good agreement with available experimental data.

Coherence in the Quasi-Particle 'Scattering' by the Vortex Lattice in Pure Type-II Superconductors

The effect of quasi-particle (QP) 'scattering' by the vortex lattice on the de-Haas van-Alphen oscillations in a pure type-II superconductor is investigated within mean field, asymptotic perturbation theory. Using a 2D electron gas model it is shown that, due to a strict phase coherence in the many-particle correlation functions, the 'scattering' effect in the asymptotic limit ($\sqrt{E_F/\hbarω_c}\gg 1$) is much weaker than what is predicted by the random vortex lattice model proposed by Maki and Stephen, which destroys this coherence . The coherent many particle configuration is a collinear array of many particle coordinates, localized within a spatial region with size of the order of the magnetic length. The amplitude of the magnetization oscillations is sharply damped just below $% H_{c2}$ because of strong $180^{\circ}$ out of phase magnetic oscillations in the superconducting condensation energy ,which tend to cancel the normal electron oscillations. Within the ideal 2D model used it is found, however, that because of the relative smallness of the quartic and higher order terms in the expansion, the oscillations amplitude at lower fields does not really damp to zero, but only reverses sign and remains virtually undamped well below $H_{c2}$. This conclusion may be changed if disorder in the vortex lattice, or vortex lines motion will be taken into account. The reduced QP 'scattering' effect may be responsible for the apparent crossover from a strong damping of the dHvA oscillations just below $H_{c2}$ to a weaker damping at lower fields observed experimentally in several 3D superconductors.
