Tunneling measurements of the electron-phonon interaction in $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$

The conductance curves of point-contact tunnel junctions between Ag and $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$ ($x\simeq 0.4$) reveal a BCS behavior with low leakage current at zero voltage and some broadening of the superconducting-gap structure. In the energy range above the superconducting energy gap, the structure in the voltage dependence of the second derivative $d^2V/dI^2$ of the voltage with respect to the current of the tunnel junction has been investigated in detail in magnetic fields up to $10\ T$. While part of this structure is rapidly changing in a magnetic field, three reproducible peaks in $d^2V/dI^2(V)$ remain stable up to the transition temperature from the superconducting to the normal state with only additional broadening in the applied magnetic field. An analysis of this structure in terms of strong-coupling effects yields the spectral function $α^2F$ for the electron-phonon interaction. The obtained spectral weight in the energy region 20-70~$meV$ points to the importance of the oxygen optical modes in the electron-phonon coupling for the superconductivity of $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$.

Reversible transitions in high-$T_c$ cuprates based point contacts

The influence of electric felds and currents has been investigated in the high-$T_c$ superconductors $YBaCuO$ and $BiSrCaCuO$ using a point-contact geometry with $Ag$ as the counterelectrode, which reveal switching transitions between states of a different resistance. The origin of this effect in point contacts is associated with electromigration of the oxygen, driven by the electric feld as well as by the currentinduced "electron wind". The switching effect preserves its basic features at elevated temperatures up to room temperature and in high magnetic felds up to 10 T.

Magnetoquantum oscillations in the resistance of metallic point contacts: Influence of nonequilibrium phonons

The amplitude of magnetoresistance quantum oscillations of Al and Be point contacts in a magnetic field parallel to the contact axis has been studied as a function of voltage applied over the contact. It was found that for one group of contacts the oscillation amplitude nonmonotonously increases with the bias voltage increase, while for the other part of the contacts a decrease of amplitude was observed. The scattering of electrons with nonequilibrium phonons and also phonon-phonon collisions will be discussed as the possible reasons of the observed effects.

Dependence of the amplitude of magnetoquantum oscillations of the metallic point-contact resistance on the bias voltage

Magnetoquantum oscillations of resistance as functions of the potential difference applied across the contact are studied for metallic point contacts made of $Al$ and $Be$. The amplitude of resistance oscillations in a magnetic field increases with voltage and is identical to the EPI spectrum of the point contact for one group of contacts, and with the bias voltage across the contact for another. The increase in the oscillation amplitude as well as its decrease has a nonmonotonic dependence on energy. The scattering of electrons by nonequilibrium phonons and the Fermi-liquid effects in the nonequilibrium electron system are considered as the possible reasons behind the observed effects.

Deviations from plastic barriers in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ thin films

Resistive transitions of an epitaxial Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ thin film were measured in various magnetic fields ($H\parallel c$), ranging from 0 to 22.0 T. Rounded curvatures of low resistivity tails are observed in Arrhenius plot and considered to relate to deviations from plastic barriers. In order to characterize these deviations, an empirical barrier form is developed, which is found to be in good agreement with experimental data and coincide with the plastic barrier form in a limited magnetic field range. Using the plastic barrier predictions and the empirical barrier form, we successfully explain the observed deviations.

Nuclear-spin qubits interaction in mesoscopic wires and rings

Theoretical study of the indirect coupling of nuclear spins (qubits) embedded into a mesoscopic ring and in a finite length quantum wire in a magnetic field is presented. It is found that the hyperfine interaction, via the conduction electrons, between nuclear spins exhibits sharp maxima as function of the magnetic field and nuclear spin positions. This phenomenon can be used for manipulation of qubits with almost atomic precision. Experimental feasibility and implications for quantum logics devices is discussed.

Electronic transport through nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum wire

Electron transport in a new low-dimensional structure - the nuclear spin polarization induced quantum wire (NSPI QW) is theoretically studied. In the proposed system the local nuclear spin polarization creates the effective hyperfine field which confines the electrons with the spins opposite to the hyperfine field to the regions of maximal nuclear spin polarization. The influence of the nuclear spin relaxation and diffusion on the electron energy spectrum and on the conductance of the quantum wire is calculated and the experimental feasibility is discussed.

Charged complexes at the surface of liquid helium

Charged clusters in liquid helium in an external electric field form a two-dimensional system below the helium surface. This 2D system undergoes a phase transition from a liquid to a Wigner crystal at rather high temperatures. Contrary to the electron Wigner crystal, the Wigner lattice of charged clusters can be detected directly.

Combined effect of Zeeman splitting and spin-orbit interaction on the Josephson current in a S-2DEG-S structure

We analyze new spin effects in current-carrying state of superconductor-2D electron gas-superconductor (S-2DEG-S) device with spin-polarized nuclei in 2DEG region. The hyperfine interaction of 2D electrons with nuclear spins, described by the effective magnetic field B, produces Zeeman splitting of Andreev levels without orbital effects, that leads to the interference pattern of supercurrent oscillations over B. The spin-orbit effects in 2DEG cause strongly anisotropic dependence of the Josephson current on the direction of B, which may be used as a probe for the spin-orbit interaction intensity. Under certain conditions, the system reveals the properties of pi-junction.

Slow oscillations of magnetoresistance in quasi-two-dimensional metals

Slow oscillations of the interlayer magnetoresistance observed in the layered organic metal $β$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$IBr$_2$ are shown to originate from the slight warping of its Fermi surface rather than from independent small cyclotron orbits. Unlike the usual Shubnikov-de Haas effect, these oscillations are not affected by the temperature smearing of the Fermi distribution and can therefore become dominant at high enough temperatures. We suggest that the slow oscillations are a general feature of clean quasi-two-dimensional metals and discuss possible applications of the phenomenon.

Irreversibility line of the MgB$_{2}$ superconductor

Magneto-resistivity of a c-axis oriented MgB$_{2}$ thin film was studied in perpendicular and parallel magnetic fields up to $\sim $23 T with temperatures down to 0.38 K. Resistive critical magnetic fields were determined. Large separations between irreversibility lines and upper critical magnetic fields are observed. An effective quantum parameter as a function of temperature is proposed to explain the separations under the theoretical framework of quantum fluctuations, in good agreement with our experimental and previously published experimental data.

Nuclear ferromagnetism induced Fulde-Ferell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

We present a theoretical study of the influence of the nuclear ferromagnetism on superconductivity in the presence of the electron-nuclear spin interaction. It is demonstrated that in some metals, e.g. Rh, W, the BCS condensate imbedded in a matrix of ferromagneticaly ordered nuclear spins should manifest the FFLO (Fulde-Ferel-Larkin-Ovchinniov) state. We outline that the optimal experimental conditions for observation of FFLO could be achieved by creation, via adiabatic nuclear demagnetization, of the negative nuclear spin temperatures. In this case the nuclear polarization points in the opposite to the external magnetic field direction and the electromagnetic part of the nuclear spin magnetization compensates the external magnetic field, while the exchange part creates the nonhomogeneous superconducting order parameter.

Observation of the screening signature in the lateral photovoltage of electrons in the Quantum Hall regime

The lateral photovoltage generated in the plane of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) by a focused light spot, exhibits a fine-structure in the quantum oscillations in a magnetic field near the Quantum Hall conductivity minima. A double peak structure occurs near the minima of the longitudinal conductivity oscillations. This is the characteristic signature of the interplay between screening and Landau quantization.

Shubnikov-de Haas effect in quasi-two-dimensional compounds

The Shubnikov - de Haas effect in quasi-two-dimensional compounds is studied. The conductivity is calculated from the Kubo formula. Two effects -- the field-dependent phase shift of the beats and the slow oscillations of the conductivity are explained and calculated. The results are applicable to the strongly anisotropic organic metals and other layered compounds.

Anomalous beating phase of the oscillating interlayer magnetoresistance in layered metals

We analyze the beating behavior of the magnetic quantum oscillations in a layered metal under the conditions when the cyclotron energy $\hbar ω_c $ is comparable to the interlayer transfer energy $t$. We find that the positions of the beats in the interlayer resistance are considerably shifted from those in the magnetization oscillations, and predict that the shift is determined by the ratio $\hbar ω_c/t$. A comparative study of the Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effects in the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal $β$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$IBr$_2$ appears to be consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Spin-Peierls transition with strong structural fluctuations in the vanadium oxide VOSb$_{2}$O$_{4}$

We report on the magnetic susceptibility and electron spin resonance measurements on polycrystalline samples of the vanadium oxide VOSb$_{2}$O$_{4}$, a quasi-one dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg system. We show that the susceptibility vanishes at zero temperature, as in a gapped system, and we argue that this is due to a spin-Peierls transition with strong structural fluctuations.

Upper critical field in {Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$}: magnetotransport versus magnetotunneling

Elastic tunneling is used as a powerful direct tool to determine the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in the high-$T_c$ oxide Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ inferred from the tunneling follows the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg prediction for type-II superconductors. A comparison will be made with resistively determined critical field data.

Magnetic state in URu2Si2, UPd2Al3 and UNi2Al3 probed by point contacts

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) state has been investigated in the three heavy-fermion compounds URu2Si2, UPd2Al3, and UNi2Al3 by measuring dV/dI(V) curves of point contacts at different temperatures (1.5-20 K) and magnetic fields (0-28 T). The zero-bias maximum in dV/dI(V) for URu2Si2 points to a partially gapped Fermi-surface related to the itinerant nature of the AFM state contrary to UPd2Al3 where analogous features have not been found. The AFM state in UNi2Al3 has more similarities with URu2Si2. For URu2Si2, the same critical field of about 40 T along the easy c axis is found for all features in dV/dI(V) corresponding to the Neel temperature, the gap in the electronic density of states, and presumably the ordered moments.
