A new proof of the description of the convex hull of space curves with totally positive torsion

We give new proofs of the description convex hulls of space curves $γ: [a,b] \mapsto \mathbb{R}^{d}$ having totally positive torsion. These are curves such that all the leading principal minors of $d\times d$ matrix $(γ', γ'', \ldots, γ^{(d)})$ are positive. In particular, we recover parametric representation of the boundary of the convex hull, different formulas for its surface area and the volume of the convex hull, and the solution to a general moment problem corresponding to $γ$.

Banach space valued Pisier and Riesz type inequalities on discrete cube

This is an attempt to build Banach space valued theory for certain singular integrals on Hamming cube. Of course all estimates below are dimension independent, and we tried to find ultimate sharp assumptions on the Banach space for a corresponding operators to be bounded. In certain cases we succeeded, although there are still many open questions, some of them are listed in the last Section. Using the approach of \cite{IVHV} and also quantum random variables approach of \cite{ELP} we generalize several theorems of Pisier \cite{P} and Hytönen-Naor \cite{HN}. We also improve the constant in $L^1$-Poincaré inequality on Hamming cube, the previous results are due to Talagrand and Ben Efraim--Lust-Piquard.

Exponential integrability for log-concave measures

Talagrand observed that finiteness of $\mathbb{E}\, e^{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla f(X)|^{2}}$ implies finiteness of $\mathbb{E}\, e^{\, f(X)}$ where $X$ is the standard Gaussian vector in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and $f$ is a smooth function with zero average. However, in this paper we show that finiteness of $ \mathbb{E}\, e^{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla f|^{2}} (1+|\nabla f|)^{-1}$ implies finiteness of $\mathbb{E}\, e^{\, f(X)}$, and we also obtain quantitative bounds \begin{align*} \log\, \mathbb{E}\, e^{\, f} \leq 10\, \mathbb{E}\, e^{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla f|^{2}} (1+|\nabla f|)^{-1}. \end{align*} Moreover, the extra factor $(1+|\nabla f|)^{-1}$ is the best possible in the sense that there is smooth $f$ with $\mathbb{E}\, e^{\,f} =\infty$ but $\mathbb{E}\, e^{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla f|^{2}} (1+|\nabla f|)^{-c}<\infty$ for all $c>1$. As an application we show corresponding dual inequalities for the discrete time dyadic martingales and its quadratic variations.

On Weissler's conjecture on the Hamming cube I

Let $1\leq p \leq q <\infty$, and let $w \in \mathbb{C}$. Weissler conjectured that the Hermite operator $e^{wΔ}$ is bounded as an operator from $L^{p}$ to $L^{q}$ on the Hamming cube $\{-1,1\}^{n}$ with the norm bound independent of $n$ if and only if \begin{align*} |p-2-e^{2w}(q-2)|\leq p-|e^{2w}|q. \end{align*} It was proved by Bonami (1970), Beckner (1975), and Weissler (1979) in all cases except $2<p\leq q <3$ and $3/2<p\leq q <2$, which stood open until now. The goal of this paper is to give a full proof of Weissler's conjecture in the case $p=q$. Several applications will be presented.

Sharp growth of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator on Gaussian tail spaces

Let $X$ be a standard Gaussian random variable. For any $p \in (1, \infty)$, we prove the existence of a universal constant $C_{p}>0$ such that the inequality $$(\mathbb{E} |h'(X)|^{p})^{1/p} \geq C_{p} \sqrt{d} (\mathbb{E} |h(X)|^{p})^{1/p}$$ holds for all $d\geq 1$ and all polynomials $h : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is supported on frequencies at least $d$, that is, $\mathbb{E} h(X) X^{k}=0$ for all $k=0,1, \ldots, d-1$. As an application of this optimal estimate, we obtain an affirmative answer to the Gaussian analogue of a question of Mendel and Naor (2014) concerning the growth of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator on tail spaces of the real line. We also show the same bound for the gradient of analytic polynomials in an arbitrary dimension.

Polynomial inequalities on the Hamming cube

Let $(X,\|\cdot\|_X)$ be a Banach space. The purpose of this article is to systematically investigate dimension independent properties of vector valued functions $f:\{-1,1\}^n\to X$ on the Hamming cube whose spectrum is bounded above or below. Our proofs exploit contractivity properties of the heat flow, induced by the geometry of the target space $(X,\|\cdot\|_X)$, combined with duality arguments and suitable tools from approximation theory and complex analysis. We obtain a series of improvements of various well-studied estimates for functions with bounded spectrum, including moment comparison results for low degree Walsh polynomials and Bernstein-Markov type inequalities, which constitute discrete vector valued analogues of Freud's inequality in Gauss space (1971). Many of these inequalities are new even for scalar valued functions. Furthermore, we provide a short proof of Mendel and Naor's heat smoothing theorem (2014) for functions on tail spaces with values in spaces of nontrivial type and we also prove a dual lower bound on the decay of the heat semigroup acting on functions with spectrum bounded from above. Finally, we improve the reverse Bernstein-Markov inequalities of Meyer (1984) and Mendel and Naor (2014) for functions with narrow enough spectrum and improve the bounds of Filmus, Hatami, Keller and Lifshitz (2016) on the $\ell_p$ sums of influences of bounded functions for $p\in\big(1,\frac{4}{3}\big)$.

Rademacher type and Enflo type coincide

A nonlinear analogue of the Rademacher type of a Banach space was introduced in classical work of Enflo. The key feature of Enflo type is that its definition uses only the metric structure of the Banach space, while the definition of Rademacher type relies on its linear structure. We prove that Rademacher type and Enflo type coincide, settling a long-standing open problem in Banach space theory. The proof is based on a novel dimension-free analogue of Pisier's inequality on the discrete cube.

Dimension independent Bernstein-Markov inequalities in Gauss space

We obtain the following dimension independent Bernstein-Markov inequality in Gauss space: for each $1\leq p<\infty$ there exists a constant $C_p>0$ such that for any $k\geq 1$ and all polynomials $P$ on $\mathbb{R}^{k}$ we have $$ \| \nabla P\|_{L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{k}, \mathrm{d}γ_k)} \leq C_p (\mathrm{deg}\, P)^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}π\arctan\left(\frac{|p-2|}{2\sqrt{p-1}}\right)}\|P\|_{L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{k}, \mathrm{d}γ_k)}, $$ where $\mathrm{d}γ_k$ is the standard Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^{k}$. We also show that under some mild growth assumptions on any function $B \in C^{2}((0,\infty))\cap C([0,\infty))$ with $B', B''>0$ we have $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}^{k}} B\left( |LP(x)|\right) \mathrm{d}γ_k(x) \leq \int_{\mathbb{R}^{k}} B\left( 10 (\mathrm{deg}P)^{α_{B}}|P(x)|\right)\mathrm{d}γ_k(x) $$ where $L=Δ-x\cdot \nabla $ is the generator of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and $$ α_{B} =1+\frac{2}π \arctan\left(\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{\sup_{s \in (0,\infty)}\left\{\frac{sB''(s)}{B'(s)}+\frac{B'(s)}{sB''(s)}\right\}-2}\right). $$

Improving constant in end-point Poincaré inequality on Hamming cube

We improve the constant $\fracπ{2}$ in $L^1$-Poincaré inequality on Hamming cube. For Gaussian space the sharp constant in $L^1$ inequality is known, and it is $\sqrt{\fracπ{2}}$. For Hamming cube the sharp constant is not known, and $\sqrt{\fracπ{2}}$ gives an estimate from below for this sharp constant. On the other hand, L. Ben Efraim and F. Lust-Piquard have shown an estimate from above: $C_1\le \fracπ{2}$. There are at least two other independent proofs of the same estimate from above (we write down them in this note). Since those proofs are very different from the proof of Ben Efraim and Lust-Piquard but gave the same constant, that might have indicated that constant is sharp. But here we give a better estimate from above, showing that $C_1$ is strictly smaller than $\fracπ{2}$. It is still not clear whether $C_1> \sqrt{\fracπ{2}}$. We discuss this circle of questions and the computer experiments.

Sharpening the triangle inequality: envelopes between $L^{2}$ and $L^{p}$ spaces

Motivated by the inequality $\|f+g\|_{2}^{2} \leq \|f\|_{2}^{2}+2\|fg\|_{1}+\|g\|^{2}_{2}$, Carbery (2006) raised the question what is the "right" analogue of this estimate in $L^{p}$ for $p \neq 2$. Carlen, Frank, Ivanisvili and Lieb (2018) recently obtained an $L^{p}$ version of this inequality by providing upper bounds for $\|f+g\|_{p}^{p}$ in terms of the quantities $\|f\|_{p}^{p}, \|g\|_{p}^{p}$ and $\|fg\|_{p/2}^{p/2}$ when $p \in(0,1] \cup [2,\infty)$, and lower bounds when $p \in (-\infty,0) \cup (1,2)$, thereby proving (and improving) the suggested possible inequalities of Carbery. We continue investigation in this direction by refining the estimates of Carlen, Frank, Ivanisvili and Lieb. We obtain upper bounds for $\|f + g\|_p^p$ also when $p \in (-\infty,0) \cup (1,2)$ and lower bounds when $p \in (0,1] \cup [2,\infty)$. For $p \in [1,2]$ we extend our upper bounds to any finite number of functions. In addition, we show that all our upper and lower bounds of $\|f+g\|_{p}^{p}$ for $p \in \mathbb{R}$, $p\neq 0$, are the best possible in terms of the quantities $\|f\|_{p}^{p}, \|g\|_{p}^{p}$ and $\|fg\|_{p/2}^{p/2}$, and we characterize the equality cases.

The Sharp Constant in the Weak (1,1) Inequality for the Square Function: A New Proof

In this note we give a new proof of the sharp constant $C = e^{-1/2} + \int_0^1 e^{-x^2/2}\,dx$ in the weak (1, 1) inequality for the dyadic square function. The proof makes use of two Bellman functions $\mathbb{L}$ and $\mathbb{M}$ related to the problem, and relies on certain relationships between $\mathbb{L}$ and $\mathbb{M}$, as well as the boundary values of these functions, which we find explicitly. Moreover, these Bellman functions exhibit an interesting behavior: the boundary solution for $\mathbb{M}$ yields the optimal obstacle condition for $\mathbb{L}$, and vice versa.

Inequalities for $L^p$-norms that sharpen the triangle inequality and complement Hanner's Inequality

In 2006 Carbery raised a question about an improvement on the naïve norm inequality $\|f+g\|_p^p \leq 2^{p-1}(\|f\|_p^p + \|g\|_p^p)$ for two functions in $L^p$ of any measure space. When $f=g$ this is an equality, but when the supports of $f$ and $g$ are disjoint the factor $2^{p-1}$ is not needed. Carbery's question concerns a proposed interpolation between the two situations for $p>2$. The interpolation parameter measuring the overlap is $\|fg\|_{p/2}$. We prove an inequality of this type that is stronger than the one Carbery proposed. Moreover, our stronger inequalities are valid for all $p$.

Martingale transform and Square function: some weak and restricted weak sharp weighted estimates

Following the ideas of A. Lerner, F. Nazarov, S. Ombrosi from [12] we prove that there is a sequence of weights $w\in A^d_1$ such that $[w]^d_{A_1}\to \infty$, and martingale transforms $T$ such that with an absolute positive $c$ $\|T: L^1(w) \to L^{1, \infty}(w)\| \ge c [w]^d_{A_1}\log [w]^d_{A_1}$. We also show the existence of the sequence of weights (now in $A_2$) such that $[w]^d_{A_2}\to \infty$, and such that the following holds: $[w]_{A_2^d}\asymp \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}^2$; $\|S_{w}: L^{2} (w) \to L^2(w^{-1})\| \ge c\, \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}\sqrt{\log \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}}$; $\|S_{w}: L^{2,1} (w) \to L^2(w^{-1})\| \ge c\, \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}\sqrt{\log \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}}; $ $\|S: L^2(w)\to L^{2, \infty}(w)\|=\|S_{w^{-1}}: L^{2}(w^{-1}) \to L^{2,\infty}(w)\|\le C\, \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}\le C\, ([w]^d_{A_2})^{1/2}$. Finally, it is shown that for test functions of the form $χ_I$ the weak norm $\|S_w χ_I\|_{L^{2, \infty}} \le C\, [w]_{A_2^d}^{1/2}\|χ_I\|_w$.
