Square functions and the Hamming cube: Duality

For $1<p\leq 2$, any $n\geq 1$ and any $f:\{-1,1\}^{n} \to \mathbb{R}$, we obtain $(\mathbb{E} |\nabla f|^{p})^{1/p} \geq C(p)(\mathbb{E}|f|^{p} - |\mathbb{E}f|^{p})^{1/p}$ where $C(p)$ is the smallest positive zero of the confluent hypergeometric function ${}_{1}F_{1}(\frac{p}{2(1-p)}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{x^{2}}{2})$. Our approach is based on a certain duality between the classical square function estimates on the Euclidean space and the gradient estimates on the Hamming cube.

Superexponential estimates and weighted lower bounds for the square function

We prove the following superexponential distribution inequality: for any integrable $g$ on $[0,1)^{d}$ with zero average, and any $λ>0$ \[ |\{ x \in [0,1)^{d} \; :\; g \geqλ\}| \leq e^{- λ^{2}/(2^{d}\|S(g)\|_{\infty}^{2})}, \] where $S(g)$ denotes the classical dyadic square function in $[0,1)^{d}$. The estimate is sharp when dimension $d$ tends to infinity in the sense that the constant $2^{d}$ in the denominator cannot be replaced by $C2^{d}$ with $0 1$ they work with a special square function $S_\infty$, and their result does not imply the estimates for the classical square function. Using good $λ$ inequalities technique we then obtain unweighted and weighted $L^p$ lower bounds for $S$; to get the corresponding good $λ$ inequalities we need to modify the classical construction. We also show how to obtain our superexponential distribution inequality (although with worse constants) from the weighted $L^2$ lower bounds for $S$, obtained in [5].

Convolution estimates and the number of disjoint partitions

Let $X$ be a finite collection of sets. We count the number of ways a disjoint union of $n-1$ subsets in $X$ is a set in $X$, and estimate this number from above by $|X|^{c(n)}$ where $$ c(n)=\left(1-\frac{(n-1)\ln (n-1)}{n\ln n} \right)^{-1}. $$ This extends the recent result of Kane-Tao, corresponding to the case $n=3$ where $c(3)\approx 1.725$, to an arbitrary finite number of disjoint $n-1$ partitions.

Boundary value problem and the Ehrhard inequality

Let $I, J\subset \mathbb{R}$ be closed intervals, and let $H$ be $C^{3}$ smooth real valued function on $I\times J$ with nonvanishing $H_{x}$ and $H_{y}$. Take any fixed positive numbers $a,b$, and let $dμ$ be a probability measure with finite moments and absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We show that for the inequality $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}} \mathrm{ess\,sup}_{y \in \mathbb{R}^{n}}\; H\left( f\left(\frac{x-y}{a}\right),g\left(\frac{y}{b}\right)\right)dμ(x) \geq H\left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}fdμ, \int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}gdμ\right) $$ to hold for all Borel functions $f,g$ with values in $I$ and $J$ correspondingly it is necessary that $$ a^{2}\frac{H_{xx}}{H_{x}^{2}}+(1-a^{2}-b^{2})\frac{H_{xy}}{H_{x}H_{y}}+b^{2}\frac{H_{yy}}{H_{y}^{2}}\geq 0, $$ $|a-b|\leq 1$, $a+b\geq 1$ and $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}xdμ=0$ if $a+b>1$. Moreover, if $dμ$ is a Gaussian measure then the necessary condition becomes sufficient. This extends Prékopa--Leindler and Ehrhard inequalities to an arbitrary function $H(x,y)$. As an immediate application we obtain the new proof of the Ehrhard inequality. In particular, we show that in the class of even probability measures with smooth positive density and finite moments the Gaussian measure is the only one which satisfies the functional form of the Ehrhard inequality on the real line with their own distribution functions.

Isoperimetric functional inequalities via the maximum principle: the exterior differential systems approach

The goal of this note is to give the unified approach to the solutions of a class of isoperimetric problems by relating them to the exterior differential systems studied by R.~Bryant and P.~Griffiths. In this note we list several classical by now isopereimetric inequalities which can be proved in a unified way. This unified approach reduces them to the so-called exterior differential systems studied by Robert Bryant and Phillip Griffiths. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article where this connection is used. After reviewing a list of classical inequalities (log-Sobolev inequality, Beckner's inequality, Bobkov's functional isoperimetric inequality and several other inequalities) we use our method to generate new isoperimetric inequalities, in particular, we found the sharpening of Beckner--Sobolev inequalities with Gaussian measure. Key words: log-Sobolev inequality, Poincaré inequality, Bobkov's inequality, Gaussian isoperimetry, semigroups, maximum principle, Monge--Ampère equation with drift, exterior differential systems, backwards heat equation, (B) theorem

Poincaré inequality 3/2 on the Hamming cube

For any $n \geq 1$, and any $f :\{-1,1\}^{n} \to \mathbb{R}$ we have $ \Re\, \mathbb{E}\, (f + i\, |\nabla f|)^{3/2} \leq \Re\, (\mathbb{E}f)^{3/2}, $ where $z^{3/2}$ for $z=x+iy$ is taken with principal branch and $\Re$ denotes the real part.

Improving Beckner's bound via Hermite functions

We obtain an improvement of the Beckner's inequality $\| f\|^{2}_{2} -\|f\|^{2}_{p} \leq (2-p) \| \nabla f\|_{2}^{2}$ valid for $p \in [1,2]$ and the Gaussian measure. Our improvement is essential for the intermediate case $p \in (1,2)$, and moreover, we find the natural extension of the inequality for any real $p$.

Lower bounds for uncentered maximal functions in any dimension

In this paper we address the following question: given $ p\in (1,\infty)$, $n \geq 1$, does there exists a constant $A(p,n)>1$ such that $\| M f\|_{L^{p}}\geq A(n,p) \| f\|_{L^{p}}$ for any nonnegative $f \in L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, where $Mf$ is a maximal function operator defined over the family of shifts and dilates of a centrally symmetric convex body. The inequality fails in general for the centered maximal function operator, but nevertheless we give an affirmative answer to the question for the uncentered maximal function operator and the almost centered maximal function operator. In addition, we also present the Bellman function approach of Melas, Nikolidakis and Stavropoulos to maximal function operators defined over various types of families of sets, and in case of parallelepipeds we will show that $A(n,p)=\left(\frac{p}{p-1}\right)^{1/p}$.

A bundling problem revisited

It was conjectured by M. Glasser and S. Davison and later proved by A. Eremenko that the certain animals should gather close to each other in order to decrease the total heat loss. In this paper we show that it is not always true for the individual heat loss. This gives a negative answer to a question posed by A. Eremenko.

Bellman function for extremal problems in $\mathrm{BMO}$ II: evolution

In the paper "Bellman function for extremal problems in $\mathrm{BMO}$", the authors built the Bellman function for integral functionals on the $\mathrm{BMO}$ space. The present paper provides a development of the subject. We abandon the majority of unwanted restrictions on the function that generates the functional. It is the new evolutional approach that allows us to treat the problem in its natural setting. What is more, these new considerations lighten dynamical aspects of the Bellman function, in particular, evolution of its picture.

Bellman partial differential equation and the hill property for classical isoperimetric problems

The goal of this note is to have a systematic approach to generating isoperimetric inequalities from two concrete type of PDEs. We call these PDEs Bellman type because a totally analogous equations happen to rule many sharp estimates for singular integrals in harmonic analysis, and such estimates were obtained with the use of Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman PDE. We show how classical inequalities of Brascamp--Lieb, Prekopa--Leindler, Ehrhard are particular case of this scheme, which allows us to augment the stock of such inequalities. We approach the isoperimetric inequalities as a maximum (minimum) principle for special types of functions. These functions are compositions of "Bellman function" and an appropriate flow built on test functions. Then the existence of maximum (minimum) principle for such compositions can be reduced to the requirement that Bellman function satisfies a concrete class of nonlinear PDE (written down below). We are left to solve this nonlinear PDE (sometimes a possible task) to enjoy isoperimetric inequalities. The nonlinear PDE that we will describe in this article can be reduced sometimes to solving Laplacian eigenvalue problem, $\bar{\partial}$-equation of certain type or just the linear heat equation.

Inequality for Burkholder's martingale transform

We find the sharp constant $C=C(τ,p, \mathbb{E}G, \mathbb{E}F)$ of the following inequality $\|(G^{2}+ τ^{2} F^{2})^{1/2} \|_{p} \leq C \|F\|_{p},$ where $G$ is the transform of a martingale $F$ under a predictable sequence $\varepsilon$ with absolute value 1, $1<p< 2$, and $τ$ is any real number.

Sharp estimates of integral functionals on classes of functions with small mean oscillation

We unify several Bellman function problems into one setting. For that purpose we define a class of functions that have, in a sense, small mean oscillation (this class depends on two convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$). We show how the unit ball in the $\mathrm{BMO}$ space, or a Muckenhoupt class, or a Gehring class can be described in such a fashion. Finally, we consider a Bellman function problem on these classes, discuss its solution and related questions.

Bellman function for extremal problems in BMO

In this paper we develop the method of finding sharp estimates by using a Bellman function. In such a form the method appears in the proofs of the classical John--Nirenberg inequality and $L^p$ estimations of BMO functions. In the present paper we elaborate a method of solving the boundary value problem for the homogeneous Monge--Ampère equation in a parabolic strip for sufficiently smooth boundary conditions. In such a way we have obtained an algorithm of constructing an exact Bellman function for a large class of integral functionals in the BMO space.
