Spectral pairs in Cartesian coordinates

Let $ Ω\subset R^d $ have finite positive Lebesgue measure, and let $ \mathcal{L}^{2}(Ω) $ be the corresponding Hilbert space of $ \mathcal{L}^{2} $-functions on $ Ω$. We shall consider the exponential functions $ e_λ $ on $ Ω$ given by $ e_λ(x)=e^{i2πλx} $. If these functions form an orthogonal basis for $ \mathcal{L}^{2}(Ω) $, when $ λ$ ranges over some subset $ Λ$ in $ R^d $, then we say that $ (Ω,Λ) $ is a spectral pair, and that $ Λ$ is a spectrum. We conjecture that $ (Ω,Λ) $ is a spectral pair if and only if the translates of some set $ Ω' $ by the vectors of $ Λ$ tile $ R^d $. In the special case of $ Ω=I^d $, the $ d $-dimensional unit cube, we prove this conjecture, with $ Ω'=I^d $, for $ d \leq 3 $, describing all the tilings by $ I^d $, and for all $ d $ when $ Λ$ is a discrete periodic set. In an appendix we generalize the notion of spectral pair to measures on a locally compact abelian group and its dual.

A family of *-algebras allowing Wick ordering: Fock representations and universal enveloping $C^*$-algebras

We consider an abstract Wick ordering as a family of relations on elements a_i and define *-algebras by these relations. The relations are given by a fixed operator T:h\otimes h --> h \otimes h, where h is one-particle space, and they naturally define both a *-algebra and an inner-product space H_T, <.,.>_T. If a_i^* denotes the adjoint, i.e., _T=<ϕ,a_i^*ψ>_T, then we identify when <.,.>_T is positive semidefinite (the positivity question). In the case of deformations of the CCR-relations (the q_{ij}-CCR and the twisted CCR's), we work out the universal C*-algebras A, and we prove that, in these cases, the Fock representations of the A's are faithful.

Minimality of the data in wavelet filters

Orthogonal wavelets, or wavelet frames, for L^2(R) are associated with quadrature mirror filters (QMF). The latter constitute a set of complex numbers which relate the dyadic scaling of functions on R to the Z-translates, and which satisfy the QMF-axioms. In this paper, we show that generically, the data in the QMF-systems of wavelets is minimal, in the sense that it cannot be nontrivially reduced. The minimality property is given a geometric formulation in the Hilbert space l^2(Z), and it is then shown that minimality corresponds to irreducibility of a wavelet representation of the algebra O_2; and so our result is that this family of representations of O_2 on the Hilbert space l^2(Z) is irreducible for a generic set of values of the parameters which label the wavelet representations.

Some second-order partial differential equations associated with Lie groups

In this note we survey results in recent research papers on the use of Lie groups in the study of partial differential equations. The focus will be on parabolic equations, and we will show how the problems at hand have solutions that seem natural in the context of Lie groups. The research is joint with D.W. Robinson, as well as other researchers who are listed in the references.

Representations of Cuntz algebras, loop groups and wavelets

A theorem of Glimm states that representation theory of an NGCR C*-algebra is always intractable, and the Cuntz algebra O_N is a case in point. The equivalence classes of irreducible representations under unitary equivalence cannot be captured with a Borel cross section. Nonetheless, we prove here that wavelet representations correspond to equivalence classes of irreducible representations of O_N, and they are effectively labeled by elements of the loop group, i.e., the group of measurable functions A:T-->U_N(C). These representations of O_N are constructed here from an orbit picture analysis of the infinite-dimensional loop group.

Wavelet filters and infinite-dimensional unitary groups

In this paper, we study wavelet filters and their dependence on two numbers, the scale N and the genus g. We show that the wavelet filters, in the quadrature mirror case, have a harmonic analysis which is based on representations of the C^*-algebra O_N. A main tool in our analysis is the infinite-dimensional group of all maps T -> U(N) (where U(N) is the group of all unitary N-by-N matrices), and we study the extension problem from low-pass filter to multiresolution filter using this group.

Decidability of the isomorphism problem for stationary AF-algebras and the associated ordered simple dimension groups

The notion of isomorphism of stable AF-C*-algebras is considered in this paper in the case when the corresponding Bratteli diagram is stationary, i.e., is associated with a single square primitive nonsingular incidence matrix. C*-isomorphism induces an equivalence relation on these matrices, called C*-equivalence. We show that the associated isomorphism equivalence problem is decidable, i.e., there is an algorithm that can be used to check in a finite number of steps whether two given primitive nonsingular matrices are C*-equivalent or not.

Compactly supported wavelets and representations of the Cuntz relations, II

We show that compactly supported wavelets in L^2(R) of scale N may be effectively parameterized with a finite set of spin vectors in C^N, and conversely that every set of spin vectors corresponds to a wavelet. The characterization is given in terms of irreducible representations of orthogonality relations defined from multiresolution wavelet filters.

Commuting self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators defined from the partial derivatives

We consider the problem of finding commuting self-adjoint extensions of the partial derivatives {(1/i)(\partial/\partial x_j):j=1,...,d} with domain C_c^\infty(Ω) where the self-adjointness is defined relative to L^2(Ω), and Ωis a given open subset of R^d. The measure on Ωis Lebesgue measure on R^d restricted to Ω. The problem originates with I.E. Segal and B. Fuglede, and is difficult in general. In this paper, we provide a representation-theoretic answer in the special case when Ω=I\timesΩ_2 and I is an open interval. We then apply the results to the case when Ωis a d-cube, I^d, and we describe possible subsets Λof R^d such that {e^(i2πλ\dot x) restricted to I^d:λ\inΛ} is an orthonormal basis in L^2(I^d).

Osterwalder-Schrader axioms - Wightman Axioms

The mathematical axiom systems for quantum field theory grew out of Hilbert's sixth problem, that of stating the problems of quantum theory in precise mathematical terms. There have been several competing mathematical systems of axioms, and here we shall deal with those of A.S. Wightman and of K. Osterwalder and R. Schrader, stated in historical order. They are centered around group symmetry, relative to unitary representations of Lie groups in Hilbert space. We also mention how the Osterwalder--Schrader axioms have influenced the theory of unitary representations of groups.

A geometric approach to the cascade approximation operator for wavelets

This paper is devoted to an approximation problem for operators in Hilbert space, that appears when one tries to study geometrically the cascade algorithm in wavelet theory. Let $ H $ be a Hilbert space, and let $ π$ be a representation of $ L^\infty(T) $ on $ H $. Let $ R $ be a positive operator in $ L^\infty(T) $ such that $ R(1)=1 $, where $ 1 $ denotes the constant function $ 1 $. We study operators $ M $ on $ H $ (bounded, but non-contractive) such that $ π(f)M=Mπ(f(z^2)) $ and $ M^* π(f)M=π(R^* f) $, $ f \in L^\infty (T) $, where the $ * $ refers to Hilbert space adjoint. We give a complete orthogonal expansion of $ H $ which reduces $ π$ such that $ M $ acts as a shift on one part, and the residual part is $ H^{(\infty)}=\bigcap_n[M^n H] $, where $ [M^n H] $ is the closure of the range of $ M^n $. The shift part is present, we show, if and only if $ \ker(M^*) \neq \{0\} $. We apply the operator-theoretic results to the refinement operator (or cascade algorithm) from wavelet theory. Using the representation $ π$, we show that, for this wavelet operator $ M $, the components in the decomposition are unitarily, and canonically, equivalent to spaces $ L^2(E_n) \subset L^2(R) $, where $ E_n \subset R $, $ n=0,1,2,...,\infty $, are measurable subsets which form a tiling of $ R $; i.e., the union is $ R $ up to zero measure, and pairwise intersections of different $ E_n $'s have measure zero. We prove two results on the convergence of the cascade algorithm, and identify singular vectors for the starting point of the algorithm.

Compactly supported wavelets and representations of the Cuntz relations

We study the harmonic analysis of the quadrature mirror filters coming from multiresolution wavelet analysis of compactly supported wavelets. It is known that those of these wavelets that come from third order polynomials are parametrized by the circle, and we compute that the corresponding filters generate irreducible mutually disjoint representations of of the Cuntz algebra $ O_{2} $ except at two points on the circle. One of the two exceptional points corresponds to the Haar wavelet and the other is the unique point on the circle where the father function defines a tight frame which is not an orthonormal basis. At these two points the representation decomposes into two and three mutually disjoint irreducible representations, respectively, and the two representations at the Haar point are each unitarily equivalent to one of the three representations at the other singular point.

Off-diagonal terms in symmetric operators

In this paper we provide a quantitative comparison of two obstructions for a given symmetric operator S with dense domain in Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ to be selfadjoint. The first one is the pair of deficiency spaces of von Neumann, and the second one is of more recent vintage: Let P be a projection in ${\cal H}$. We say that it is smooth relative to S if its range is contained in the domain of S. We say that smooth projections $\{P_i \}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ diagonalize S if (a) $(I-P_{i})SP_i=0$ for all i, and (b) $\sup_{i}P_{i}=I$. If such projections exist, then S has a selfadjoint closure (i.e., $\bar{S}$ has a spectral resolution), and so our second obstruction to selfadjointness is defined from smooth projections $P_i$ with $(I-P_i)SP_i \neq 0$. We prove results both in the case of a single operator S and a system of operators.

Unitary Representations and Osterwalder-Schrader Duality

The notions of reflection, symmetry, and positivity from quantum field theory are shown to induce a duality operation for a general class of unitary representations of Lie groups. The semisimple Lie groups which have this $c$-duality are identified and they are placed in the context of Harish-Chandra's legacy for the unitary representations program. Our paper begins with a discussion of path space measures, which is the setting where reflection positivity (Osterwalder-Schrader) was first identified as a useful tool of analysis.

Diagonalizing operators with reflection symmetry

Let $U$ be an operator in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_{0}$, and let $\mathcal{K}\subset\mathcal{H}_{0}$ be a closed and invariant subspace. Suppose there is a period-2 unitary operator $J$ in $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ such that $JUJ=U^*$, and $PJP \geq 0$, where $P$ denotes the projection of $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ onto $\mathcal{K}$. We show that there is then a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K})$, a contractive operator $W:\mathcal{K}\to\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K})$, and a selfadjoint operator $S=S(U)$ in $\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K})$ such that $W^*W=PJP$, $W$ has dense range, and $SW=WUP$. Moreover, given $(\mathcal{K},J)$ with the stated properties, the system $(\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K}),W,S)$ is unique up to unitary equivalence, and subject to the three conditions in the conclusion. We also provide an operator-theoretic model of this structure where $U|_{\mathcal{K}}$ is a pure shift of infinite multiplicity, and where we show that $\ker(W)=0$. For that case, we describe the spectrum of the selfadjoint operator $S(U)$ in terms of structural properties of $U$. In the model, $U$ will be realized as a unitary scaling operator of the form $f(x)\mapsto f(cx)$, $c>1$, and the spectrum of $S(U_{c})$ is then computed in terms of the given number $c$.
