The heterogeneous helicoseir

We study the rotations of a heavy string (helicoseir) about a vertical axis with one free endpoint and with arbitrary density, under the action of the gravitational force. We show that the problem can be transformed into a nonlinear eigenvalue equation, as in the uniform case. The eigenmodes of this equation represent equilibrium configurations of the rotating string in which the shape of the string doesn't change with time. As previously proved by Kolodner for the homogenous case, the occurrence of new modes of the nonlinear equation is tied to the spectrum of the corresponding linear equation. We have been able to generalize this result to a class of densities $ρ(s) = γ(1-s)^{γ-1}$, which includes the homogenous string as a special case ($γ=1$). We also show that the solutions to the nonlinear eigenvalue equation (NLE) for an arbitrary density are orthogonal and that a solution of this equation with a given number of nodes contains solutions of a different helicoseir, with a smaller number of nodes. Both properties hold also for the homogeneous case and had not been established before.

Computing the solutions of the van der Pol equation to arbitrary precision

We describe an extension of the Taylor method for the numerical solution of ODEs that uses Padé approximants to obtain extremely precise numerical results. The accuracy of the results is essentially limited only by the computer time and memory, provided that one works in arbitrary precision. In this method the stepsize is adjusted to achieve the desired accuracy (variable stepsize), while the order of the Taylor expansion can be either fixed or changed at each iteration (variable order). As an application, we have calculated the periodic solutions (limit cycle) of the van der Pol equation with an unprecedented accuracy for a large set of couplings (well beyond the values currently found in the literature) and we have used these numerical results to validate the asymptotic behavior of the period, of the amplitude and of the Lyapunov exponent reported in the literature. We have also used the numerical results to infer the formulas for the asymptotic behavior of the fast component of the period and of the maximum velocity, which have never been calculated before.

An ubiquitous three-term recurrence relation

We solve an eigenvalue equation that appears in several papers about a wide range of physical problems. The Frobenius method leads to a three-term recurrence relation for the coefficients of the power series that, under suitable truncation, yields exact analytical eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for particular values of a model parameter. From these solutions some researchers have derived a variety of predictions like allowed angular frequencies, allowed field intensities and the like. We also solve the eigenvalue equation numerically by means of the variational Rayleigh-Ritz method and compare the resulting eigenvalues with those provided by the truncation condition. In this way we prove that those physical predictions are merely artifacts of the truncation condition.

Comment on: "Quantum aspects of the Lorentz symmetry violation on an electron in a nonuniform electric field'' Eur. Phys. J. Plus (2020) 135:623

We analyze recent results concerning the hypothesis of a privileged direction in the space-time that is made by considering a background of the Lorentz symmetry violation determined by a fixed spacelike vector field and the analysis of quantum effects of this background on the interaction of a nonrelativistic electron with a nonuniform electric field produced by a uniform electric charge distribution. We show that the conclusions derived by the authors are an artifact of the truncation of the Frobenius series by means of the tree-term recurrence relation for the expansion coefficients. Thus, the existence of allowed angular frequencies stemming from this procedure is meaningless and unphysical.

Gross misinterpretation of a conditionally solvable eigenvalue equation

We solve an eigenvalue equation that appears in several papers about a wide range of physical problems. The Frobenius method leads to a three-term recurrence relation for the coefficients of the power series that, under suitable truncation, yields exact analytical eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for particular values of a model parameter. In this way we prove that those physical predictions are merely artifacts of the truncation condition.

Comment on: "On the effects of the Lorentz symmetry violation yielded by a tensor field on the interaction of a scalar particle and a Coulomb-type field" Ann. Phys. 399 (2018) 117-123

We analyze the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions stemming from a recent study of the interaction of a scalar particle with a Coulomb potential in the presence of a background of the violation of the Lorentz symmetry established by a tensor field. We show, beyond any doubt, that the physical conclusions drawn by the authors from a truncation of a power series, coming from the application of the Frobenius method, are meaningless and nonsensical.

Spectral sum rules for the Schrödinger equation

We study the sum rules of the form $Z(s) = \sum_n E_n^{-s}$, where $E_n$ are the eigenvalues of the time--independent Schrödinger equation (in one or more dimensions) and $s$ is a rational number for which the series converges. We have used perturbation theory to obtain an explicit formula for the sum rules up to second order in the perturbation and we have extended it non--perturbatively by means of a Padé--approximant. For the special case of a box decorated with one impurity in one dimension we have calculated the first few sum rules of integer order exactly; the sum rule of order one has also been calculated exactly for the problem of a box with two impurities. In two dimensions we have considered the case of an impurity distributed on a circle of arbitrary radius and we have calculated the exact sum rules of order two. Finally we show that exact sum rules can be obtained, in one dimension, by transforming the Schrödinger equation into the Helmholtz equation with a suitable density.

On some conditionally solvable quantum-mechanical problems

We analyze two conditionally solvable quantum-mechanical models: a one-dimensional sextic oscillator and a perturbed Coulomb problem. Both lead to a three-term recurrence relation for the expansion coefficients. We show diagrams of the distribution of their exact eigenvalues with the addition of accurate ones from variational calculations. We discuss the symmetry of such distributions. We also comment on the wrong interpretation of the exact eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by some researchers that has led to the prediction of allowed cyclotron frequencies and field intensities.

Comment on "Bidimensional bound states for charged polar nanoparticles''

In a recent paper Castellanos-Jaramillo and Castellanos-Moreno proposed a simple quantum-mechanical model for an electron in the vicinity of an ionized nanostructure with a permanent electric dipole. They chose the interaction of the electron with the charge and the dipole in such a way that the resulting Schrödinger equation is separable into radial and angular parts. In this comment we show that those authors did not solve the angular eigenvalue equation with proper periodic boundary conditions and that they also made a mistake in the elimination of the first derivative in the radial equation. Such errors invalidate their results of the Einstein coefficients for the $\left( GaAs\right)_{3}$ system considered.

On the Hellmann-Feynman theorem in statistical mechanics

In this paper we develop the Hellmann-Feynman theorem in statistical mechanics without resorting to the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian operator. Present approach does not require the quantum-mechanical version of the theorem at $T=0$ and bypasses any discussion about degenerate states.

Exceptional points of the eigenvalues of parameter-dependent Hamiltonian operators

We calculate the exceptional points of the eigenvalues of several parameter-dependent Hamiltonian operators of mathematical and physical interest. We show that the calculation is greatly facilitated by the application of the discriminant to the secular determinant. In this way the problem reduces to finding the roots of a polynomial function of just one variable, the parameter in the Hamiltonian operator. As illustrative examples we consider a particle in a one-dimensional box with a polynomial potential, the periodic Mathieu equation, the Stark effect in a polar rigid rotor and in a polar symmetric top.

Comment on: "Tunneling of coupled methyl quantum rotors in 4-methylpyridine: Single rotor potential versus coupling interaction". J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{147}, 194303 (2017)

We analyze the results obtained recently by Khazael and Sebastiani (J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{147}, 194303 (2017)) for two coupled methyl rotors. We show that one of the avoided crossings obtained by those authors is in fact a true crossing between states of different symmetry. Present analysis is supposed to be clearer because it is based on an independent calculation of eigenvalues for each irreducible representation. The application of group theory also enables a more accurate calculation by means of smaller matrix representations of the Hamiltonian operator.

Quantum particles in a suddenly moving localized potential

We study the behavior of a quantum particle, trapped in localized potential, when the trapping potential starts suddenly to move with constant velocity. In one dimension we have reproduced the results obtained by Granot and Marchewka, Ref. \cite{Granot09}, for an attractive delta function, using an approach based on a spectral decomposition, rather than on the propagator. We have also considered the cases of Pöschl-Teller and simple harmonic oscillator potentials (in one dimension) and to the hydrogen atom (in three dimensions). In this last case we have calculated explicitly the leading contribution to the ionization probability for the hydrogen atom due to a sudden movement.

On the calculation of exact sum rules of rational order for quantum billiards

We study the Helmholtz equation for a heterogeneous system in $d$ dimensions and show that it is possible to calculate exactly the sum rules of rational order using perturbation theory by relating the sum rules to suitable traces. The present calculation is restricted to a positive definite spectrum, e.g. Dirichlet boundary conditions, and it reproduces the result previously obtained in Ref.~\cite{Amore12}, working directly with Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory.

On the calculation of exact sum rules of rational order for quantum billiards (spectrum with a null eigenvalue)

We generalize the calculation of Ref.~\cite{Amore19B} to the case of a spectrum containing a zero mode. Using a renormalization procedure, we express the sum rules in terms of suitable traces and show that the final expressions, calculated up to second order in perturbation theory agree with the results obtained when working directly with the eigenvalues and using Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory.

Exact sum rules for heterogeneous spherical drums

We have obtained explicit integral expressions for the sums of inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a unit sphere, in presence of an arbitrary variable density. The exact expressions for the sum rules are obtained by properly "renormalizing" the series, excluding the divergent contribution of the vanishing lowest eigenvalue. For a non--trivial example of a variable density we have applied our formulas to calculate the exact sum rules of order two and three, and we have verified these results calculating the sum rules numerically using the eigenvalues obtained with the Rayleigh-Ritz method.

Thomson problem in one dimension: minimal energy configurations of $N$ charges on a curve

We have studied the configurations of minimal energy of $N$ charges on a curve on the plane, interacting with a repulsive potential $V_{ij} = 1/r_{ij}^s$, with $s \geq 1$ and $i,j=1,\dots, N$. Among the examples considered are ellipses of different eccentricity, a straight wire and a cardioid. We have found that, for some geometries, multiple minima are present, as well as points of unstable equilibrium. For the case of the cardioid, we observe that the presence of the cusp has a dramatic effect on the distribution of the charges, in the limit $N \gg 1$.
